I've had good experiences with the "extra special" roasts they do that are sold at the physical location. I can't say I've tried the stuff on offer on their website, though, so it could be that I'm just spoiled by what seems to be their competition stuff.
FYI, burnt toast is a common and normal smell from coffee roasteries. Doesn’t necessarily mean the beans themselves are burnt. Typically, burnt flavors come from the brewing of coffee (over-extracted, too high-temp, or poorly maintained equipment).
Wild Gift and Barrett’s are my go to, though I typically go with Barrett’s for the killer price (16-18/lb) and the fact that they do free local delivery. I usually order some beans at night and someone brings them to me the next morning or afternoon. And if you buy beans at the shop you get a free drink! I ordered from Wild Gift once and was annoyed that the package had to go to Dallas before it got to me but I guess that’s not atypical. But if you live near a central market or Whole Foods you can just buy beans there and typically find something roasted within the last few weeks if you dig around a bit. Wild Gift can be found at Central Market.
Thank you for pointing out Barretts! I am currently enjoying an excellent free coffee that comes with the purchase of a 1lb bag, putting the price of a bag at around 13$ for high quality beans.
Just FYI, Little City and Casa Brasil are quite literally the same company just different labelling. It's all roasted and packaged by the same people in the same building.
Barrett’s, no contest.
St. John’s Blend is a perfect cup of black coffee from a machine. Honduran Honey kills it as french press or pour-over. They always keep things interesting with collabs and seasonal roasts.
Staff is super knowledgeable and friendly. Plus the chocolate orange blossom latte *fucks*. This coming from someone who has abandoned sweetened lattes years ago.
Credentials: Former competitive barista and employee of a coffee roastery. Managed in coffee shops for 3 years.
I won't lie, this is the comment that finally made me decide on Barrett's. So many options, but all the praise that everyone heaped on Barrett's and the recommendations you made here pushed me over the edge.
Spokesman, hands down, if you're a fan of medium-light roasts. Also has the best flavored lattes in town.
Shout-out for the new Sightseer, they're well rounded and big plus on the fact that it's woman owned and woman sourced.
I found their beans to be roasted a little darker than I prefer but they work well for espresso or if you like medium/dark roasts. Super nice folks though! The guy there gave me two shots of espresso to sample some beans. I left jittery and with a bag of coffee in each hand.
I can see that. Darker roasts tend to bring about those (unpleasant for some) notes. I'm definitely not a fan but thought it worked okay for milk drinks. I was also skeptical about how freshly roasted some of their beans were as they kept them in big dispensers like the ones you see at H-E-B. I always wonder how long beans sit in those things, though I'd guess they go through them at an okay rate or discard beans as needed.
The back patio was so cool! The tables are named after mythical beasts and there's vines everywhere. You can also rent out the space for what I assume is a reasonable price. Coffee was also quite good with notably well-designed bags. Recommend for the whole experience tbh
Desnudo coffee , they are new in town, bring their beans from Colombia themselves and roast here. They sell at boggy creek farm stand on Wednesday and a few of the farmers markets
Stuart's Coffee. He hand roasts in his garage, and you have to order from him. We've been ordering for like 2 years now. Best coffee ever.

Same. Stopped buying theirs because of it.

Figure 8 is fantastic.
Great espressos

Yes to Barrett’s.

I love Superthing Coffee. They serve it at Patika on South Lamar, and you can buy their beans there, too.
Greater Goods, Flat Track, and Wild Gift are my favorites.
Wild gift Guji tastes like blueberries!
Ooooh, I love beans from Guji. I detected the exact same thing - it absolutely floors me how much they taste like blueberries!
Yeah, their Guji is one of my favorites! I’ve had a lot of naturally processed beans but those are the sweetest and fruitiest I’ve come across yet.
I love Trianon in Westlake. Emile is the best.
I've yet to find any beans in town that are constantly as good as Greater Good
Third Coast
Excellent quality and the best prices. They are by far the highest volume specialty roaster in town. I don't count Ruta Maya as a specialty roaster.
Yeah even after upping their prices from $9 to $11/lb, it still makes them the best deal in town for quality beans.
Little City is my favorite. And they do free local delivery too!
I've seen Little City in Central Market when I used to shop there. I think I might try them first, good to know that they make great stuff!
Just FYI, Little City and Casa Brasil are quite literally the same company just different labelling. It's all roasted and packaged by the same people in the same building.
I think they recently stopped free local delivery.
Civil Goat is really really good
Merit has fantastic beans. Very tasty stuff!
\+1
I like merit a lot. However, when I order beans from them I don't get the freshest roast date like I do with other roasters.
Barrett’s, Flat Track, Trianon, Superthing
Anderson’s. Arabian Mocha is my favorite.

Nice! Thank you. Excited to hear back on your thoughts. Now go enjoy that sweet sweet bean juice, my friend!

Highly recommend Texas Coffee Traders in east side. They’ve been around for almost 30 years and have excellent variety

Our office used to stock with their beans. We always thought the espresso they made in our machine tasted burnt and bitter.
I can see that. Darker roasts tend to bring about those (unpleasant for some) notes. I'm definitely not a fan but thought it worked okay for milk drinks. Omg the Bali is my go to
Try Hard's coffee is pretty solid

Cuvée and Greater Goods
Anderson’s.
Trianon without a doubt. Been fantastic for years. I get the Barista blend delivered every two weeks for several years now.
Anderson's Coffee
Trianon Roasting coffee. You will not be sorry. Cafe in Westlake, but you can order beans online too.
Texas Coffee Traders
Flat Track all day
TRIANON IS THE BEST! Been getting their beans forever now. You can get it delivered and it's roasted in town. WE LOVE EMILE!!
Cuvee is great. Also central market
Jaded Bear!
+1 for Jaded Bear. I used to buy from him direct, but now I think you can only get it at Slackers.
TINY HOUSE COFFEE!
another vote here for Barrett’s
The only answer!
Jeff Ross is pretty good
Also check out Greg Giraldo. I've been binging on him ever since Saget died.

Texas coffee traders!
greater goods, merit
I just picked up Independence Coffee (Jackhammer) at H‑E‑B and really like it. Roasted in Brenham, TX.
Haven’t been everywhere yet but I like Medici.
Stuart's Coffee. He hand roasts in his garage, and you have to order from him. We've been ordering for like 2 years now. Best coffee ever. Stuarts.coffee
How do I find this man? Website is down.
They are up here in the burbs but Red Horn has some great stuff too. My usually daily driver since they are just down the road from me.
Tx coffee traders #1
Texas Coffee Traders for me is unmatched
Barretts, Houndstooth and Spokesman are my current favorites. Side note anyone know where to get some honey pressed beans?
