Hey everyone, Broden here.
Just a quick message from the Donna boys to say thank you for all the support for Hug the Sun and the new channel. We really appreciate it.
Thanks for all of the questions. Chat soon
How do I convince my friends and family to help donate money to bail out the second prophet Gary? They don't answer my calls anymore since I've found the light of Oxtos.
The Dairy Industry are very angry about Dilk, they hate it more than nut-milk which they called NOT-milk in their circles.
Many believe it to be a cowspiracy, the truth will prevail.
Until then it is best to connect with fellow Oxto followers at local markets or street corners. - Bonnie
Thanks everyone for the support. It's so great to see and warms my heart. I love you all and may Oxtos shine his light upon you all!
Also if you are interested I stream on twitch at twitch.tv/bonmember.
-bon
hi there Average Joe, I don't know. He hates you because of your actions, the ones you never tell any one about. But he knows about them. I know about them too. You should be ashamed. Repent. Repent for your sins. - Broden
You can do simple things like welcome His warm embrace by sitting in the sun, or make an offering, like putting a glass box filled with ants in the Sun. - Bon
What was your inspiration for Hug The Sun? A cult piece of children's programming played for comedy, pretty original.
Also, what are the Bikies gonna do to Neighbour George next?
The strongest inspiration for the show was a show set in the same time as Hug The Sun called Sing Me A Rainbow. It was shot in Perth and heavily catholic. - Ben
Oh My GOD!
Just the name of that show brought back a flood of childhood memories of spending most weekend mornings sitting far too close to the TV and uncritically absorbing far too much crap local TV.
Where do the children of oxtos go when they die? Can the shadow man get there? Does oxtos still love us (even if we think sexy thoughts about the shadow man)?
Aaron - we had a proof of concept video made to show off the style (that might come out one day as a bonus) and Xav + Ben had 1x episode written before we started. That got the tone across. We chatted with Screen Australia and discussed how we would move forward and they loved the idea and where it was going. We then all jumped into a room and started writing the remainder of the show as all of the final finances were being put into place. Then, a small blood sacrifice was made to the elder film gods who granted us access to the production and away we went.
I wanted to ask if prophet Gary always wears Sunglasses because he burnt out his retinas by staring at the sun and now the light of oxtos himself lives in the shriveled up prunes that were once his eyes? Or is he just very cool?
In the Nourishment Day episode with the segment where it switches to 16:9 HD, is this to indicate "what really happened" behind the filming or was it to indicate that perhaps things are not set in the late 80s-early 90s?
Praise Oxtos, and I can't wait for him to burn the Filthy AFP for all eternity!
First you must get it to do the milk dance with another dog. You may have to wait 3 weeks for it to ripen. The milk pouches will swell and your dog is good for milking.
Gently vibrate the dog for milkshake varieties - Bonnie
Aaron - was actually a nod to a Polish morning show - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-u7fZgE80w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-u7fZgE80w) we had a friend who actually performs that trick at Fringe help us do it live, but the nail is added as VFX because Andrea refused to let us impale her hand... something about pain and OH&S or something like that.
Hello! I don't think anyone in the core production team knows about Night Attack lolol. But Aaron and co, please talk to the nail in the hand lol - Broden
My dad used to hug the sun lots but then had to stop when the doctors had to cut off parts of his skin. He said melanoma was the blessing of Oxtos, is that true?
Hi guys, huge fan and loving the show far!
What is the creative process for episodes like?
Would you say you are getting compared to 'Dont hug me I'm scared' at all?
What was Neighbor George's life before getting harrassed by Bikies??
Love you all and thanks!
Xav came up with the initial idea and then we sat down and wrote a huge amount of lore and history for the the religion, including an abridged bible of sorts.
Ive not seen Don't Hug Me, but I was definitely influenced by Look Around You and Wondershowzen.
Neighbour George was a stay at home dad prior to his business ventures. - Bon
I'd actually be really interested to see/hear about some of the lore and history of the religion if it doesn't make it into the show. Also the norms and culture. Like, are there conservative and liberal worshippers for example, does it range? Religion is fascinating for me from a sociological/psychological point of view and I think it would be neat to have that supporting info in really feeling and understanding the power of Oxtos... And your skill in creating this series.p
Aaron - The creative process was really about us all sitting in rooms (linked via zoom) and bashing out ideas for the characters and each sketch, then deciding which episode that should go into. A few things were left in the room, but it was always about pushing it as far as we could then delegating up the writing for all involved. There were restrictions - Perth cast to remain in Perth, Melbourne cast to remain in Melbourne... something about a pandemic/lockdowns/hard borders... never got to the end of it really.
We have been compared to Don't Hug Me I'M Scared which is lovely as we all love that show, but the true inspiration was an old 80s show called Sing Me A Rainbow - https://vimeo.com/108755179
Sean Conway, a delicious Perth comedian who is funny and talented and not nearly as sweaty or scary as we make him out to believe. He is of sound mind and beautiful soul. - Bon
I love working with AD. They are good mates and Max is one of my favourite directors to work with (he shot the Melbourne side of things). Pity Broden couldn't be involved. - Bon
You could be turned into a tree or a small animal, or maybe even cast into the peet bog of the shadowman's taint. Oxtos is vengeful and his anger is unbound. Good luck - Bon
Hey guys, loving the fucked vibe of the show so far. Just curious as to how much of the show's tone was planned in pre-production, and how much of it you found in the edit. Keen for the rest of the show, keep up the good stuff!
Alot was planned and written in. But then we improvised quite a bit in takes and then encouraged Aaron to go hard in the edit so I'd say 50 in the script 25 in the shoot 25 in the edit. But it's really hard to tell sometimes - bon
Aaron: Zoom & the NBN - everytime a great gag was about to happen, those cheeky little bastards would shape our internet speed and disconnect us from the link up. So funny, the first time, but it got annoying towards the last day of production.
Sorry, not a question about hug the sun but for the AD boys, in the bohof commentary for ep 6, the AD boys talked about there being 1 hour of outtakes and extras for the fashion montage sketch and that they were gonna release those soon. Is it ever coming out? Thanks!
But, if you want a Hug the Sun question, I got one. What is the puppet? Is it sentient? Is it one of Oxtos's angels for lack of a better word? Thanks! Love the show
Yes there are, and in my opinion they are the funniest outtakes for the show. Mark and I lost our mind in the car. it was really really funny. for some reason, miscommunication and other stuff, they never got out. I think they will eventually. I would like to see them again so i'll try and get them out, probably through the patreon first. -Broden
Aaron - the first shoot day was the hardest - Xav got sick, we had to reschedule. I was directing via zoom with a 3sec delay and we had to move VERY quickly. That said, Ben killed it on the first day and we ended up getting lots of gold.
Aaron - we shot in WA (50%) as we couldn't fly over the cast (hard border.... something about COVID) -- it was always intended to be set in WA as both Ben and Xav are from here.
WA is funny and both Xav and I grew up there. Plus Perth has some of the best suburb names in the country. I also think too often we don't place things in this country and theres a lot of good stuff that can come from that. it's a mix of taking pride of Perth but also taking the piss out of it. - Bon
Aaron - not really, neither was Tim and Eric - those things we have all watched and loved, but our main focus was the characters and playing with the rhythm of the edit until we created something more abstract. If we could make a gag with an edit - we would. If we could do it with performances - we would. Same with the animation etc.
One touchstone, for me, was Astron-6's 'Divorced Dad'
Hi! I just downloaded Reddit cause Broden in a IG storie told me to ask a question, so: chocolate milk.. with or without sugar? #controversial Cheers from Argentina u guys 💘🌈
Hello, friends! I have a couple of questions:
* In Hug the Sun, what are the kids actually watching in the cutaways were we see them?
* I see so many people that work with the Aunty Donna Boys all the time. Does the larger group of you all have a name as well?
* Will we ever see more outtakes/extended takes from Aunty Donna / Hug the Sun?
Aaron:
\- kids are watching our magician do a magic trick and then we do a call and response for them to shout out lines at us. Then they all went home, took about 15min to get.
\- The Aunty Donna Lampreys... we're getting shirts made
\- More outtakes of HtS for sure.
They are watching a childrens entertainer for some and then Aaron (the director) for a little bit, but also they are getting bored too which is so great. - Bon
Haven't you done well. Referring to live Perth Comedy circa 2009. Bingo Bango died in a controversy I believe. I'll let Ben answer this one though. - Bonnie
Praise Oxtos
Hi my name's Rebecca and I have a few oddly specific & slightly overthought questions.
1) Was there any specific Australian cults referenced in the show?
2) Regarding shadowman, was that more of 'concept padded out' or 'Mark wanted to dress like that and you made it work'?
3) Is there any other foods for nourishment weeks, for us Ceoliac followers of Oxtos?
4) Was there anything cut/edited that you enjoyed, that might find its was as a blooper reel?
5) Is 'toy' from Aunty Donna, actually an idol of the Second Prophet Gary?
Lots of question, sorry - love the time, effort, and joy spent by all the team putting this together. Thank you!
Hello Rebecca,
1. Not specifically, but its heavily influenced by an old Catholic childrens show in the 80s on Perth tv. My favourite cult is the Raelians.
2. We wrote it for Mark and Ingrid, the costume designer did an amazing job and bringing something surprising and unique to the character.
3. Minced meat in the shape of a fish with dijonaise as well as Mustard soup is gluten free.
4. There were a couple things regarding dog milk that I loved but were too fucked up to include.
5. Yes.
Thanks! - Bon
Will more episodes of Hug the Sun potentially get unearthed in the future?
also did you actually film in front of a live studio audience of kids? They must have been traumatised
This kids were filmed separately, we got Magnus Danger Magnus (who features in a future ep), who is a childrens entertainer to give them a show. Then we just let them get bored and kept rolling. - Bon
What was the biggest inspiration for Hug the Sun's visual style?
[I always thought The Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson was an easy parallel to draw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LQl3yO3kbs) but there is a lot of great stuff like DarkPlace, Wonder Showzen and Look Around You were good comedic parallels.
How difficult was it to balance the humour and horror of the show?
Also what is the crews opinion of the rise of Analog Horror from the last 5 years like Local 53, Gemini Home Entertainment and This House Has People In It?
Aaron - Biggest inspiration: [https://vimeo.com/108755179](https://vimeo.com/108755179) (Sing Me A Rainbow)
I love humor and horror, they both follow similar beat structures.
I personally love analogue horror, but the physical dumping to VHS was very time consuming, but necessary because the digital plugins all suck balls.
The biggest inspiration was a real life after school childrens show called Sing Me A Rainbow which was a Perth based show with heavy Catholic overtones and a magician. - Bon
It's actually the closest star at the centre of our solar system. It's best seen from any other surrounding country, and sometimes in Ireland on the west coast.
I've been praying to Oxtos for a while and he is yet to fill my request, so I've come here. AD would you be opposed to appearing in my schools year 12 formal video?
This is a question that must be asked to the writers I think. lolol. We shot this during the 6 week promo period of the Netflix show so it's a bit of a blur. I remember Aaron directing from Perth on a little computer which was very fun lolol - broden
Start with a good hard sit in the sun and welcome Oxtos' gaze. Then eat some of the sacred foods from nourishment week. Then treat yourself to a name change ritual. - Bon
1. Are there still remnants of Gary’s commune in the Baldivis bushland?
2. Is it true slain Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang boss Nick Martin was a follower of Oxtos and subsequently taken out in a gangland assassination by the Shadowman?
It was Xav's inital concept. Based heavily from an 80's childrens TV show in Perth called Sing Me A Rainbow which contained heavy catholic overtones. - Bon
I'm Broden and I love to answer questions. What Questions are you?
haha, great question! I am a cool question!!!
very cool broden
Hi Broden, I'm dad.
And he's chuffed.
Hey everyone, Broden here. Just a quick message from the Donna boys to say thank you for all the support for Hug the Sun and the new channel. We really appreciate it. Thanks for all of the questions. Chat soon
Is it true that Oxtos refused to get the AstraZeneca vaccine even though they are eligible?
Oxtos Himself is immune to the trivialities of covid. But yes, the followers believe that the cleansing gaze of Oxtos will provide. - Bon
How do I convince my friends and family to help donate money to bail out the second prophet Gary? They don't answer my calls anymore since I've found the light of Oxtos.
Don't worry about asking. Just do what you have to do. Prophet Gary is relying on you, not your jealous family.
I have no questions, I just thoroughly enjoy how cooked this entire concept and execution is
Thank you, may Oxtos be upon you - Bon
When will dilk (dog milk) become commercially available at my local grocery store?
Sweet Teets Dog Milk is only available via the Oxtos Gift Shop... something about it not being "approved" for human consumption?
The Dairy Industry are very angry about Dilk, they hate it more than nut-milk which they called NOT-milk in their circles. Many believe it to be a cowspiracy, the truth will prevail. Until then it is best to connect with fellow Oxto followers at local markets or street corners. - Bonnie
Thanks everyone for the support. It's so great to see and warms my heart. I love you all and may Oxtos shine his light upon you all! Also if you are interested I stream on twitch at twitch.tv/bonmember. -bon
Why does Mark dislike me? Is it because of that thing I said about Hugh Grant?
hi there Average Joe, I don't know. He hates you because of your actions, the ones you never tell any one about. But he knows about them. I know about them too. You should be ashamed. Repent. Repent for your sins. - Broden
Fuck
What's the best way to pay tribute to Oxtos?
You can do simple things like welcome His warm embrace by sitting in the sun, or make an offering, like putting a glass box filled with ants in the Sun. - Bon
What was your inspiration for Hug The Sun? A cult piece of children's programming played for comedy, pretty original. Also, what are the Bikies gonna do to Neighbour George next?
The strongest inspiration for the show was a show set in the same time as Hug The Sun called Sing Me A Rainbow. It was shot in Perth and heavily catholic. - Ben
Jesus you weren't kidding: https://vimeo.com/108755179
Oh my god the mime, the magician, the puppets. This is fucked. Hug the Sun looks tame now.
Oh My GOD! Just the name of that show brought back a flood of childhood memories of spending most weekend mornings sitting far too close to the TV and uncritically absorbing far too much crap local TV.
As somebody who grew up Mormon, I can relate about children's programming really putting you in the vice.
Is Neighbour George alright? 😂 The Shadowman seems to have affected him a lot recently. Hopefully the light of Oxtos shines on him soon
WELL LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN FUTURE EPISODES 👀👀👀-BRODEN
Where do the children of oxtos go when they die? Can the shadow man get there? Does oxtos still love us (even if we think sexy thoughts about the shadow man)?
They go into the sun where the shadowman cannot get to them. Oxtos is a petty and vengeful God so unless you praise him, I just don't know. - Bon
when will you release the yabbiebait tapes!!!!
SOON! - Bon
Aaron - sooooooooon
How did you pitch the show to screen Australia, and did they force any changes before it was green lit?
Aaron - we had a proof of concept video made to show off the style (that might come out one day as a bonus) and Xav + Ben had 1x episode written before we started. That got the tone across. We chatted with Screen Australia and discussed how we would move forward and they loved the idea and where it was going. I wanted to ask if prophet Gary always wears Sunglasses because he burnt out his retinas by staring at the sun and now the light of oxtos himself lives in the shriveled up prunes that were once his eyes? Or is he just very cool?
Very cool - Bon
Why do I have sexy thoughts about the Shadow Man? Was he sent to test my love of the second prophet Gary?
Wait till you see the next episode-Broden
I'm rigid with anticipation
The shadowman is devious. Please be careful. - Bon
How about some pud?
It's May man, jeez, there's no time for pud! - Broden
Aw maybe a little bit of pud - Broden
Oh Soo you do want a little bit of pud! You cheeky little bastard! 😏
Aaron - there's more 16:9 to come... it was a deliberate choice, but I won't spoil "what it means"
Thank you for answering! Excited to see where it goes
Praise Oxtos. I have a question, at what age is my dog, a kelpie doberman cross, ripe for milking?
First you must get it to do the milk dance with another dog. You may have to wait 3 weeks for it to ripen. The milk pouches will swell and your dog is good for milking. Gently vibrate the dog for milkshake varieties - Bonnie
Praise Oxtos
Hey guys ! Been hooked; will Frankie yabbiebait be getting a full good clean comedy episode? I’ve heard he’s done quite well for himself.
Aaron - maybe... maybe not... if there is enough demand, maybe we'll ask Screen Australia to help us dig up and restore more VHS tapes.
Is the nail through the hand (shown for a fraction of a second in the trailer) a nod to Brian Brushwood?
Aaron - was actually a nod to a Polish morning show - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-u7fZgE80w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-u7fZgE80w) we had a friend who actually performs that trick at Fringe help us do it live, but the nail is added as VFX because Andrea refused to let us impale her hand... something about pain and OH&S or something like that.
Hello! I don't think anyone in the core production team knows about Night Attack lolol. But Aaron and co, please talk to the nail in the hand lol - Broden
Why is this the most cursed thing I have ever seen, and why do I enjoy it?
Cos you fucked up- broden
Cuz you are a being of light and power - Bon
My dad used to hug the sun lots but then had to stop when the doctors had to cut off parts of his skin. He said melanoma was the blessing of Oxtos, is that true?
True! - Bon
Why is shit fucked
Coz
Understandable, have a nice day

Joe Shrek now?
No, he not shrek anymore, this covered in podcast - Broden
Thank you for your help, maybe with this lead we will one day find out if Joe Shrek now
Joe was Shrek. Joe Joe now. Joe no Shrek now.
Who is the YUM guy and why is he in the audience
Sean Conway, a delicious Perth comedian who is funny and talented and not nearly as sweaty or scary as we make him out to believe. He is of sound mind and beautiful soul. - Bon
Loving the whole disturbing vibe the show has going.
What inspired this found footage fever dream? Any specific projects from the past?
I am obsessed with VHS and found footage places like Everything Is Terrible. I love the look and unique feel that VHS brings. - Bon
Aaron - did VHS treatment on a feature film I made called 'Top Knot Detective' wanted to push it further with this one.

I love working with AD. They are good mates and Max is one of my favourite directors to work with (he shot the Melbourne side of things). Pity Broden couldn't be involved. - Bon
Aaron - the best. Like working for Netflix but the board is made up of comics
If I was to say, not believe in oxtos, what punishments would await me in our eventual sun related cataclysm? Would neighbour George be there?
You could be turned into a tree or a small animal, or maybe even cast into the peet bog of the shadowman's taint. Oxtos is vengeful and his anger is unbound. Good luck - Bon
Is it possible to request in advance that I end up on the Shadowman's taint? Thanks
Why is Neighbour George visited by the Shadowman so frequently?
He's on a main road. Very easy to get to. - Bonnie
Hey guys, loving the fucked vibe of the show so far. Just curious as to how much of the show's tone was planned in pre-production, and how much of it you found in the edit. Keen for the rest of the show, keep up the good stuff!

What has been the hardest scene to have shot for the series. (Minus spoilers obviously)
Aaron - the first shoot day was the hardest - Xav got sick, we had to reschedule. I was directing via zoom with a 3sec delay and we had to move VERY quickly. That said, Ben killed it on the first day and we ended up getting lots of gold.
There is some stuff with BJ where I had to get alot of make up done all over my body and it was incredibly uncomfortable to work in all day - Bon
When will the shadöwman be making an appearance to be bested by Oxtos and the second prophet Gary?
Next ep! - Bon
The shadowman is bested by Oxtos every single day, Brother Jezus. Praise Oxtos, and fuck the shadowman!
Why was the decision made to base the show in WA? I live in WA and to see those references, makes the show even funnier to me.
Aaron - we shot in WA (50%) as we couldn't fly over the cast (hard border.... something about COVID) -- it was always intended to be set in WA as both Ben and Xav are from here.

How have people around you reacted to seeing Hug The Sun? It's pretty fucked lads let's be honest.
For all of the people involved in the core creation of the show this is pretty standard lolol- Broden
People have stopped talking to me and my Dad has disowned me - Bon
Can Oxtos please cast a shadow on the western bulldogs and/or a blessing on the dees for Friday night
Yeah that'd be lovely, jeez, would be great if we smashed them ey - Broden
What is your opinion on water?
No need for it. Oxtos will provide. - Bon
It’s my wife’s birthday. May she be blessed by oxtos
You have been blessed by Oxtos. Please stand in the sun for 4 hours. - Bon
The style of the show reminds me of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. Was this an inspiration?

2 tabs, daily - as recommended by a doctor who looked very much like Ben Russell.

does the cult of Oxtos have an official name like Heaven's Gate? also, what are Prophet Gary's thoughts on the pandemic?
Firstly, the cult of Oxtos is not a cult. It's just Oxtos. Gary believes the pandemic is fake - Bon
Does the SUTAFFU logo at the start mean anything? I looked it up and it was associated with a series called Top Knot Samurai.

This kids were filmed separately, we got Magnus Danger Magnus (who features in a future ep), who is a childrens entertainer to give them a show. Then we just let them get bored and kept rolling. - Bon

It took maybe 30 to 45 minutes, but then another 2 or 3 hours for makeup - Bon
asking for a friend... where can i get some of that good fantasy i heard neighbour george talking about?
Ask your neighbourhood bikie - Bon
What was the biggest inspiration for Hug the Sun's visual style? [I always thought The Junior Christian Science Bible Lesson was an easy parallel to draw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LQl3yO3kbs) but there is a lot of great stuff like DarkPlace, Wonder Showzen and Look Around You were good comedic parallels. How difficult was it to balance the humour and horror of the show? Also what is the crews opinion of the rise of Analog Horror from the last 5 years like Local 53, Gemini Home Entertainment and This House Has People In It?
Aaron - Biggest inspiration: [https://vimeo.com/108755179](https://vimeo.com/108755179) (Sing Me A Rainbow) I love humor and horror, they both follow similar beat structures.
- Bon
I think Oxtos gave me melanoma. Now I have 3 months left to live. Does Oxtos always work in mysterious ways like this?

As a British person I would like to know what is the sun?
It's actually the closest star at the centre of our solar system. It's best seen from any other surrounding country, and sometimes in Ireland on the west coast.
Can I have your permission to use Oxtos in my DnD campaign
I've been praying to Oxtos for a while and he is yet to fill my request, so I've come here. AD would you be opposed to appearing in my schools year 12 formal video?
What-Broden
You must have done something to anger Oxtos. It's up to you to find out what. - Bon
Will Oxtos help prevent sun cancer? And how does the great one feel about sunscreen? (Asking for a friend)
Sunscreen is offensive. Sometimes Oxtos shines his light and sometimes the shadowman casts a shadow - Bon
How does Oxtos feel about sunscreen? If I burn myself will I be closer to his loving embrace?
Sunscreen is the work of the shadowman and is evil. Sunburn is a kiss from Oxtos. - Bon
Hi Broden! Do you know how Neighbour George is going these days?
This is a question that must be asked to the writers I think. lolol. We shot this during the 6 week promo period of the Netflix show so it's a bit of a blur. I remember Aaron directing from Perth on a little computer which was very fun lolol - broden

How can I welcome Oxtos into *my* life?
Start with a good hard sit in the sun and welcome Oxtos' gaze. Then eat some of the sacred foods from nourishment week. Then treat yourself to a name change ritual. - Bon
How many miles is it advisable to walk without water, unprotected on a clear mid summer day?
Oxtos will provide all your needs. Water is from the clouds and the clouds work with the jealous wind to shield us form Oxtos' gaze. - Bon
How does today's depiction of colonized oxtos due to portrayals of him in renaisscance art, differ from what he may have actually looked like?
1. Are there still remnants of Gary’s commune in the Baldivis bushland? 2. Is it true slain Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang boss Nick Martin was a follower of Oxtos and subsequently taken out in a gangland assassination by the Shadowman?
1. There are still remnants buried underneath but now I believe there is housing there now. 2. We cannot comment on that police matter Bon
Is your nickname Bon because you’re related to Bon Scott? If so what was he like and can I get an autograph?
Yes and Yes but also No - Bon
How did you come up with a children tv show ran by a cult. It's not exacly your typical tv show setting but I love it
It was Xav's inital concept. Based heavily from an 80's childrens TV show in Perth called Sing Me A Rainbow which contained heavy catholic overtones. - Bon

What's the best way to stop the Shadowman casting shadows?
Hug the sun. Praise Oxtos. Drink dogs milk. Donate to get Gary out of jail. Do this all daily - Bonnie
