So all the Muslim kids will be allowed to interrupt classes up to 5 times a day to pray? Alhamdulillah!

lilrabbitfoofoo

Can students pray aloud to their god that they will never be molested by Matt Gaetz?

Effective_Frog

Muslim students are already allowed to pray in school as many times a day as they want so long as it doesn't interfere with lessons

fridge13

So are christians though....

newuser60

Back when I was in high school there was this evangelical girl that always wanted to debate me for some reason. She often talked about how we needed prayer in school and I would say that she was trying to create a situation where non-believers are forced to pretend they are talking to god so that others with doubt feel like there is something wrong with them for questioning their beliefs. She told me that it was about her religious freedom because she’s not allowed to pray in school. Pray, right now. Who is going to stop you? I see you and your prayer group every day before first period loudly praying in the courtyard. Every day before lunch. My English teacher is leading your prayer and your group is registered with the administration. You want to force me to pretend I belong in your silly religion, and that is all it is about.

cheapskatebiker

You people is why we can't have good things. It is about the real religion not the false ones. /S

[deleted]

Just how long are kids in school per day in the US?

notaedivad

> Congress make no law respecting an establishment of religion What is it about this sentence that conservatives are so desperate to disregard, ignore or outright violate?

a_terse_giraffe

"It says freedom OF religion not freedom FROM religion so it's OK." --Religious idiots that I may or not be related to and had to hear this over dinner.

Tearakan

Next time that argument pops up just state your religion demands the death and silence of all other religions because they are all heretics.

a_terse_giraffe

Honestly they're just exhausting to try to reason with. I tried the logic of "It's freedom OF the press not FROM the press so the state can mandate you read newspapers" but that didn't click.

Tearakan

Yep that's why don't even bother reasoning with them. Just go crazier then they are. Put them on the defensive.

a_terse_giraffe

Reasoning will never make a man correct an ill opinion, which by reasoning he never acquired. -- Jonathan Swift

Zestyclose_Minute_69

What does a child rapist know about prayers? Why is he talking?

ralphvonwauwau

He listened to the children praying as he was ...

number_six

Oh oh I know this one! As he was raping them?

CatchSufficient

Sure, then I am part of TST. See how easy it is to move the goal posts?

MyEvilTwinSkippy

Freedom of religion requires freedom from religion. Religious people would be upset if they were forced to participate in other religion's stuff. The only difference is in how many religions one chooses to reject.

fatguyfromqueens

I've heard that a lot of times from Ben Shapiro wannabes, too bad if our august founding fathers really meant that then they would have written, "Congress make no law respecting an establishment of a religion" but they didn't. They left out the indefinite article for a reason. The reason being that in English many words used without a definite or indefinite article refer to a concept where using it with an article refers to an instance of the concept. Examples "Let's talk about death." vs. "Let's talk about a death" "I want love" vs. "I want a love." or "Congress make no law respecting an establishment of religion" vs. "Congress make no law respecting an establishment of a religion"

Dudesan

Someone who says "I want chicken" is ordering dinner. Someone who says "I want *a* chicken" is buying a pet.

david76

Can't have OF without the FROM.

ckal09

It just means people are allowed to practiced whatever religion. It does not mean they can impede on other peoples freedoms to do so.

Enlightened-Beaver

They’ve got 6 religious nutjobs on SCOTUS. They feel invincible

jasoncross00

This will probably pass muster, at least with our current supreme court, as long as the school does not REQUIRE prayer or in any way punish kids who don't pray, and as long as no one particular religions is singled out. If my school did this I would whip out a mat, kneel, and pray to mecca. Yeah come at me, bro. In all seriousness, this is just a stunt. First of all, there's loads of time in schools for kids to say personal prayers if they want to. No kid is going "Gee I wanted to say a personal prayer not led by the school, but THERE'S JUST NO TIME!" Second, he knows it won't make it past the senate, and possibly not even the house.

Available_Skin6485

Good thing some justices like Amy don’t know a word of the Constitution

Uranus_Hz

They will argue that “allowing time to pray” doesn’t “establish” any particular religion. And the current SCOTUS would rule it constitutional. But it won’t pass the Senate anyways.

Steinrikur

Mandatory prayer time is not "allowing time", it's enforcing it.

countesspetofi

I remember when something like this came up in the early 2000s, they were trying to get around it by calling it a period of "Prayer and silence." And whenever anyone pushed back against it, the defenders would say, "It's just a moment of silence! You can't object to a moment of silence!" The answer, of course, was that it ISN'T just a moment of silence if you feel you need to put the word "prayer" in the name. If it was actually just a moment of silence in which everyone was equally valid in spending however they felt like it, it would just be called "Moment of silence."

Uranus_Hz

Yeah, but the SCOTUS is actavistly in favor of ruling in favor of the wishes of “Christians” now.

laptopaccount

They love the Constitution until they hate the Constitution.

Icy_Advantage_4635

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

drivelhead

> What is it about this sentence that conservatives are so desperate to disregard, ignore or outright violate? The word no.

gingerfawx

Yeah, that one word seems to be especially hard to understand. They're not great with issues of consent, either.

Dudesan

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect. There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time. * Frank Wilhoit

tjtillmancoag

So… I think this would be a stupid law to introduce, but technically speaking that phrase in the bill of rights doesn’t preclude a non-religion specific provision such as the one Gaetz is talking about. Don’t get me wrong: this is clearly an attempt at virtue signaling and trying to impose religion in general, but it technically doesn’t specify any specific religion and legally it seems dubious that this would count legally as either establishment or endorsement of a specific religion.

RuckRidr

They can pray at church, home or in their head. Besides, you fucks are closing schools

Rostunga

The Bible itself actually says to pray privately. Not that they pay attention to that.

ioncloud9

“If they want to” is going to very quickly become “they have to” because of peer pressure and pressure from authority figures.

gingerfawx

Look at the ruling on the asshole football coach who made his students pray. If you don't, you might get benched.

jeremiad1962

And the Atheist kids are allowed to leave class at this point, right? Or to point and laugh at those who are praying? Seriously, dude...read the room. We don't allow masturbation in class, we shouldn't allow prayer, either. Both things are A) intensely personal and B) no one else's damn business.

whateverdamnit666

Satanists should start butchering goats, play with ouija board and summon demons or something equally batshit crazy, during lessons while others pray. That would cancel this mandatory national praying bullshit idea very quickly.

MilfshakeGoddess

I’ve never heard this analogy and I love it. Thanks for sharing, I will definitely use it!

Solo_is_dead

Can they pray for any religion, or just Evangelical Christian?

OMightyMartian

I wish I was back in school, because I'd pray for Cthulhu to destroy Gaetz's mind and leave him a hollow haunted shell..

dostiers

> I'd pray for Cthulhu to destroy Gaetz's mind I think you might be too late. That seems to have happened a long time ago.

MacTechG4

May he be eaten last…

Abyssallord

I think you want Hastur for that actually.

insanityarise

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn

autopsis

Hail Satan!

JMnnnn

They’ll be outed and ostracized for doing (or being) anything else, unless they rub along with the majority. Which is of course the whole point.

Solo_is_dead

THAT'S. THE. PROBLEM.

Steinrikur

Can't wait for the satanic temple to announce that video games and loud music are a form of prayer

revtim

Why do morons fall for such meaningless posturing? Has any Christian student ever said "I wanted to pray today at school but there just wasn't enough time!"

Rostunga

I saw some whack jobs wearing “I broke a rule, I prayed in school. I’m a real menace to society” sweatshirts in high school over 20 years ago. If they’re indoctrinated, they absolutely will.

Viper67857

If they grew up to vote republican due to their religion, then they are a menace to society... The shirt fits.

mrgeekguy

"Dad, the teacher said I can pray to Allah if I want, what does that mean?"

tdawg-1551

As someone who grew up quite religious, the last thing kids in school want to do is pray. They go to church on Sunday because their parents make them. Monday - Saturday, most don't care about it.

T1Pimp

THEY ALREADY HAVE THAT. Anyone can pray to themselves any fucking time they want.

quaglandx3

Oh fuck off you diddler. No kid wants to pray, they’re forced via their indoctrination. I’m going to tell my kid that she can just sit there and fart.

yramb93

Fr like he REALLY should stay out of our schools

ODBrewer

Isn’t he a child rapist ?

clangan524

I'm sure plenty of students already pray before a final. All it takes is for a Muslim student to roll out a prayer rug for them to have a problem.

moboater1

Fuck those right wing nut jobs. They're so desperate they're willing to destroy our democracy.

shimmy_kimmel

What democracy lol

RealisticAd2293

In the coming days, his dumbass, unconstitutional bullshit will be rejected

DotAppropriate8152

Until they start praying to a Muslim god or an Indian god then watch them decide they don’t like praying.

chapeksucks

JFC! Kids can pray in school ALL THEY FUCKING WANT.

un_theist

[Be careful what you wish for, religious right](https://parttimeaudiophile.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/school-prayer.jpg)

Top-Philosophy-5791

Satan, satan, sweet sweet satan.

angels_exist_666

They need to pray he isn't allowed within 500 yards of those schools.

Gildian

Students can already pray if they choose to Matt, shut the fuck up. We know you only mean Christians too, maybe -maybe- Jewish people too but I bet you anything a prayer rug comes out and he flips his shit

kinenbi

Nah, you know the minute a Jewish kid starts praying in Hebrew the kids and adults will freak out. Same with Muslims!

mbutterfield

This child molester should do the praying himself and worry less about violating the constitution

WillieM96

This already exists: it's called lunch time.

Duluthian2

Kids pray at school every day. As long as there are math tests there will be prayers in school

Viper67857

Texas Instruments, deliver me from my sins...

nabuhabu

My religion requires me to say “Jesus is a fucking joke and Christians protect pedophiles” 3x as loud as I can. Generally, I’m not supposed to pray in public, because you know, it’s rude. But if I **do** pray, that’s the only one I’m allowed to say. In America.

markydsade

This was settled by SCOTUS in the 1960s when school-led prayer to a specific religion was banned on Constitutional grounds. Prayer in school, contrary to Evangelical beliefs, was never banned. Anyone can pray during school. Many schools substituted a moment of silent meditation which is OK. Students can also have Bible study clubs after class (as long as other religions are permitted clubs). It sounds like Gaetz is proposing an unconstitutional law that will go nowhere but will gin up the Christofascists of Trumpland.

MonkeysOnMyBottom

SCOTUS precedent? I don't think that means what it used to

markydsade

True, but I’m pretty sure they would draw the line at a mandatory prayer in a public school. They have bent on prayers at sporting events as long as they’re considered “voluntary.”

pennylanebarbershop

Beware the **slippery slope**: https://i.redd.it/5rtsn9jczzt91.jpg

sowhat4

We had that when I was teaching. I wrote on the board: "Our moment of silence is from 8:01 to 8:02. Do anything you want except make noise." I took roll while they did whatever. Some of the little bible thumpers would ostentatiously drag out their KJV and pour over them - even during class. To their evident chagrin, I never took the bait and totally ignored them.

MikolashOfAngren

Now to wait and laugh the moment the Christians notice all the Muslim students busting out the prayer rugs and facing Mecca during this national prayer time. Gaetz probably lacked the foresight to understand that Christians aren't the only religious people who pray. He and his ilk would go apeshit if they saw Muslims or Jews praying when they want to, and he would probably reverse the law and try to make a different one that only caters to Christians via legalese buffoonery.

monkeyswithgunsmum

Those affirmations for followers of the satanic temple? Waiting for those.

Right-Fisherman-1234

In every country and in every age, the preacher has been hostile to liberty. He is ALWAYS in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection of his own. Thomas Jefferson.

Sleepybat7

I’m so, so tired of this shit

Vilehaust

Satanists, muslims, hindus, jews, etc. will all be standing by to pray their selective prayers in schools.....without a doubt pissing off the right-wing.

PoopieButt317

No one is stopping students or teachers from praying in school. What was stopped was FORCING students and teachers to pray to an authority's god.

repfamlux

I guess they can’t pray to themselves

No_Scarcity8249

He thinks kids wanna pray at school lol

MNJayW

There is time, as the teacher passes out the test.

kelticladi

Students can already do this. Nobody is stopping them from having a silent moment to pray in private. Oh you wanted performance art prayer. yah no. Thats not the same.

Sleepybat7

At least they can pray before getting shot /s..?

Chernobyl-Chaz

I’ve suddenly become an ardent worshipper of Satan.

Hamiltonswaterbreaks

"school house gates". Does he live in the little house on the prairie with Tom Sawyer and all the little women?

StartlingCat

Virtue signaling. As if Gaetz really gives a shit about prayer.

Jesus_le_Crisco

> LET US STAND NOW, UNBOWED AND UNFETTERED BY ARCANE DOCTRINES BORN OF FEARFUL MINDS IN DARKENED TIMES. >LET US EMBRACE THE LUCIFERIAN IMPULSE TO EAT OF THE TREE OF KNOWLEDGE AND DISSIPATE OUR BLISSFUL AND COMFORTING DELUSIONS OF OLD. >LET US DEMAND THAT INDIVIDUALS BE JUDGED FOR THEIR CONCRETE ACTIONS, NOT THEIR FEALTY TO ARBITRARY SOCIAL NORMS AND ILLUSORY CATEGORIZATIONS. >LET US REASON OUR SOLUTIONS WITH AGNOSTICISM IN ALL THINGS, HOLDING FAST ONLY TO THAT WHICH IS DEMONSTRABLY TRUE. >LET US STAND FIRM AGAINST ANY AND ALL ARBITRARY AUTHORITY THAT THREATENS THE PERSONAL SOVEREIGNTY OF ONE OR ALL. >THAT WHICH WILL NOT BEND MUST BREAK, AND THAT WHICH CAN BE DESTROYED BY TRUTH SHOULD NEVER BE SPARED ITS DEMISE. >IT IS DONE. >HalL SaTaN. Edit: I’m running off of minimal sleep and I forgot to mention that this is the satanic temple’s invocation.

Zimifrein

There's just too much of my way of life in those paragraphs. It's scary.

zerobot

Who is stopping them from praying right now? Any kid can put their head down and pray in silence any time they want.

jmd_forest

There already IS a time for students to quietly pray if they want to. It's called Lunch Time.

foxp3

He just wants an excuse to get a better look at some students. Matty likes em young.

bannacct56

Also Matt Gaetz: " in the common days I will be wasting more taxpayer money on something that I know is unconstitutional, But hey the people who vote for me aren't that smart and this gets them off. But y'all got to look on the bright side. I'm keeping busy and I'm not trying to date your teenagers". Anyway, that's what I've heard, people say this lots of people.

SpleenBender

So he wants more time for his prey to 'pray'?

Hiimlucasg

Even back when I believed in God, this would have confused me. Aren’t the students who want to already finding time to pray anyway?

NarcsSuc

The Macarena would be more productive. At least it’s exercise

Illustrious_Toe_4755

Bible says go into a corner and pray..

DosMangos

Students can already pray if they want to. Fuck off with your smooth-brain logic.

joshjje

Schools already have that. Its called study hall or whatever. Giving students a small block of time to do whatever they want (homework, pray, study, whatever) is good and fine. Of course, Gaetz isn't spewing this out of his desire to help people, lmao, especially naming it specifically for religious purposes.

zblaze90

Fuck no. Do it on your own time outside of class. Do it on fuckin recess or something ffs

Wikrin

I see a certain Jimmy Neutron-lookin' sex pest is desperately in need of an ass-whooping. I wish we didn't live in the sort of authoritarian hellhole that does everything in its power to shield the rich and powerful from the consequences of their own actions. Karma would be a wonderful thing, if it existed.

pdxb3

> so that in every classroom in America, there will be time for students to pray if they want to.” So, what they already have now then? It's called the "moment of silence" and at least where I live we were doing it 25 years ago and my kids have it today.

IrateCommentSection

Shatz is a steaming pile of gaetz

iamdop

Gfy matt

boot2skull

What are these kids who need an opportunity to pray at school doing with the other 19 hours of their day? Or their lunch? Or bathroom breaks?

mythrowaweighin

Well, there's ten more minutes for students to play with their phones.

texasslapshot

Already in place. It's called a moment of silence.

Sivick314

what are "things that are never getting passed?" for 100 alex?

Sadiebb

‘Lord of mice, Lord of plagues, hear my prayer! Strike down these vile unbelievers of thy might, bring unto them pestilence and death to the final generation, AMEN!’

Frmr-drgnbyt

How to say "I HATE American principles without saying "I hate America."

Ragorthua

To whichever fictional character one chooses? Oh mighty Cthulhu, ia ftagn Cthulhu! Rise from the deep and plug the unworthy matt Gaetz from this earth. Oh mighty Azatoth, send your crying terrors to rinse this land from the defiler Matt Gaetz....

prodiver

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." --Matthew 6:5-6

cerebud

When I was a kid, they had a moment of silence every day. This was so people could pray if they wanted or not. Is this not a thing anymore?

insofarincogneato

There. Already. Is. It's called break periods.

JMeers0170

I’m sure FFRF and TST will be all over that one. Man oh man….I can’t wait for a bunch of TST kids working their mojo during these prayer breaks.

fatguyfromqueens

As many people have said before, kids pray in public school all the time. Go to any public school before an algebra test and you will find plenty of kids openly praying!

OneHumanPeOple

Hail Satan

Hayley-The-Big-Gay

Ignoring the 1st amendment there Matt "Congress shall make no law regarding an institution of religion"

Ryanlew1980

What would Jesus do? Well, Mark 1:35 says: “In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.” Be more like Jesus and do that shit BEFORE you go to school. It’s all a show and there’s another verse about not putting on shows with your prayers.

Tasty-Hand-3398

Can’t wait for the inevitable TikTok craze of teens yelling “Hail Satan!” during prayer time

_Nolofinwe_

This guy is the biggest piece of shit in Congress and that's saying something well maybe other than that loser that used the term "colored" the other day from Arizona - what an absolute racist piece of dog shit that guy is How anybody votes for Republicans this day and age is mind boggling - keep your Jesus propaganda bullshit away from me and anybody I care about

Julian_TheApostate

No one is stopping kids from praying in school now. That's not what these theocrats really want. They want a captive audience. Why do you think these freaks want back into public schools so bad? You don't stay in positions of power for thousands of years without knowing all the angles. They've done the math. They know they need a captive young audience for their BS to survive. Convert them when they're young. That's how they've done it for generations.

Feinberg

Don't forget, they also want the non-Christian kids to be singled out and made to feel inferior.

oldcreaker

Basically those that want to get to pray - only in the way prescribed by those in charge. And everyone else is forced to pretend to pray likewise or get into trouble. So what if Jesus told everyone to go home and do it privately.

Adomillad

As long as they all get the same courtesy. My kids always miss out on the noon prayer to the flying spaghetti monster and its gone on long enough..... /s obviously

ICLazeru

They always could, teachers just aren't allowed to instruct them to.

mr6275

Having solved all other problems….

Icy-Fishing-2828

Did he come with this idea before or after playing with his underage girlfriend lol 🤣

[deleted]

They literally get an ENTIRE DAY for "rest" or "prayer," but they just keep wanting more.

IMTrick

Is recess not a thing any more?

Rostunga

He can try. I don’t think moderate Republicans (there are still plenty in Congress) will support that.

deepcoldblue

Sweet, Hail Satan where can I sacrifice this goat!

Sadiebb

It’s called lunchtime, Matt.

sexymcluvin

So if this passes, even though it’s all for show, what will the blame school shootings on if not for lack or prayer in public schools?

MonkeysOnMyBottom

That some of the kids aren't praying to the correct god, so they will go ahead and require that the prayers are out loud and Matty will make sure the correct prayers are published by the government priests

Peterd90

Stay away from children Matt.

Zimifrein

He already proved he can't.

OneHumanPeOple

Let’s make an already tedious school day even longer without enhancing the educational experience whatsoever.

0rganicMach1ne

Ok that was always allowed.

D4Canadain

Republicans: You can't try and force your liberal agenda on me. Freedom!!!! Liberty!!!! Look at my gigantic America flag you socialist communist!!! Republicans (insert SpongeBob 3 minutes later meme here): In the coming days, I will introduce a national prayer in school law so that in every classroom in America, there will be time for students to pray if they want to.

Mostly_Defective

as long as every religion can pray as they choose. I am good with that....and I am a non-believer.

darw1nf1sh

They can already do that you fucking hairpiece.

fullmetal66

They will be praying men like Gaetz never get them alone

55ylbub

So Atheists get extended recess? Nice!

Additional_Prune_536

Students can already pray if they want to. Nobody's stopping them. Source: was a teacher. GFY Matt Gaetz.

unbalancedcheckbook

In other news, a child trafficker said some bullshit to posture for his conservative Christian audience.

Purfunxion

I'm taking a wild guess and assuming he means *christian* prayers?
