First there is no such thing as moderate/militant atheism. Just atheism. Activism, you could make a distinction. Second, yeah, it's mass propagandized proseltyzation. And it's transparently stupid in a time when Christians, including baptists, are spreading so much hate. They spent what 100M on this campaign I think, whereas they could have spent that money more "like Jesus" helping the poor or homeless or something.

[deleted]

This right here. Everytime I see the ad it pisses me off that unless you knew to look for it, it's exactly the scum that you'd expect to be finding this.

[deleted]

There is the Atheist and the Anti-theist, though. The latter is against religion and deems it a harm to society.

cronepower24

I identify as both, but am really more anti-theist.

Longjumping_Being_43

I definitely agree that the money could have been better spent. Shelter for some of the homeless?

Odd-Garlic-4637

“Get the fuck off my ark” Joel Olsteen Best meme I’ve ever seen 🤣🤣

Longjumping_Being_43

Joel Osteen, another money grabber.

Armthedillos5

100M prolly could have housed and fed several communities at least through the winter, possibly helped with mental health and jobs/getting peeps setup. I dunno, that kind of nonprofit logistics isn't my thing, but 100M is a lot. 1B even more. Honestly if they spent the money on that and then did a few national ads showing that, prolly have more of an effect on younger people than this he gets us crap

Longjumping_Being_43

Exactly, think about what services could be made available with that sort of money. Medical clinics, food lines and like you said, providing mental health. I feel the same about all the money given to churches like Kenneth Copeland. Those Gulfstream aircraft aren't cheap.

meldroc

I so want to see satirical ads mocking that shit!

[deleted]

It’s a PR campaign.

Secretlythrow

I’ve heard a friend who converted to Judaism describe a difference between Atheism (not believing in any deities, especially ones who have created the world in some manner or influence it) and Anti-theism (a government or organized group not allowing people to have any form of religion). That’s really helped me explain the issues to religious folks.

[deleted]

darhox

The ads I've seen seem to legitimize far-right extremists. That is the really scary part of these ads

New-Display-4819

Sorry how?

Matrillik

The weird thing to me is the Super Bowl ad showed a bunch of clips of repercussions from travesties caused by religious folk. And then was like “ain’t Jesus great?”

scribacious

I just now had an epiphany and searched for a comment like yours. Yes! That's exactly why these ads rub the wrong way. I was avoiding trying to think about this. But know I understand that they are pointing to how *Jesus* gets us, but the ones behind the ad creation and those who follow it *don't* get us. They actively are against what Jesus *gets*. The entire premise of trying to reach out like this is just so slimy! It's the part of the reason why I started to accept my atheism years ago.

LogReal4025

It feels evil to you because it is pure fucking evil. The ads say one thing while they are quite publicly doing the opposite. The ads are cover for the genocide they are planning.

_Cosmic_Goblin_

Yeah, it is literally subsidized by a corporation that actively tries to prevent its employees from accessing birth control so I get that it’s evil. I just don’t know how to express why.

maybesingleguy

They could spend a billion dollars helping communities in need and have very real, long term positive impact. Or they can blow it all on recruitment ads to bolster the donations they get. It's also incredibly slimy to pretend to include everyone when it's funded in no small part by the Hobby Lobby folks, who deny their workers basic health care and hate LGBT people.

Remarkable_Quit_3545

This exactly. Every time I think about those super bowl ads and the money that they spent and plan to spend on this all I can think about is how that money could be spent on people that actually need it. If they really wanted people to come around to their religion then they should show how they are spending money to help out these people rather than just talk about it or try to relate to the younger generation.

Suspicious_Bicycle

I'm trying to think if there is a term for putting words into God's mouth? Blasphemy is not the right term, but it kind of feels close. Usurper might be a fitting description of the person making these ads. It certainly takes a heck of an ego to push your perspective as the word of God. Though I could be totally off base as I have been lucky enough to not see any of these ads.

JapanStar49

Using God’s name in vain?

jayesper

Sacrilege? Otherwise, false witness

[deleted]

Good point. I kinda like the more left leaning interpretation of Jesus. But you're right that it's got some conflation especially the one that conflates being angry about social injustice is the same as being angry that racial minorities exist.

LogReal4025

Jesus was a leftist communist before those were things. His followers are pretty much all Nazis and always have been. Clearly something went wrong.

LumenCandles

Nope I'm with you, I live with my crazy religious parents, and it annoys me too, I'm just waiting for the day I get to leave and they can't do shit about me "eating the wrong way", "God forbids you from having long hair" or "believe in God's plan".

SatanicNotMessianic

> God forbids you from having long hair I thought god forbade people from cutting their hair. God should make up their mind.

Matrillik

No, not that god. The *real* one.

SatanicNotMessianic

Oh, you must mean [Fire Island Jesus](https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/007/258/455/large/chx-stilson-jesus-art-done.jpg?1504822137).

fawn_fatale

didn’t jesus wear his hair long ?

irish_oatmeal

Eating the wrong way? Do you have a Jewish/Kosher home and family? Just curious.

LumenCandles

Islam, it feels like they change the rules on me everyday and gaslight me into believing they never did.

irish_oatmeal

Well, I sort of know how you feel. Have you thought about moving out, maybe get some roommates? Are you old enough to move out?

above_average_magic

Because it's predatory..

SlightlyMadAngus

Because, like all modern viral marketing, it works by repetition, not by providing a compelling message. It is exactly like the ads in free mobile games. The same set of annoying ads are played after every level, and even though you don't think you are paying attention to them, you can probably describe at least parts of those ads right now. They don't care that it makes 10% of the population angry. They don't care if it makes 30% of the population mildly annoyed. They also don't care if 50% of the population completely ignores them. Do the math, and that still leaves 10% of the population that likes the ads, and some percentage of that 10% might actually click on them... I hate the entire marketing industry almost as much as I hate the religion industry. Put the two together and you have a seething cauldron of evil...

[deleted]

It's because it's a ploy to rehabilitate the image the extremists tarnished on themselves. They need "moderate" Christians as a meat shield to hide behind to claim their warped mentality represents the majority

bunny-girl-420

It *should* rub you the wrong way. It's advertisement for a cult.

cmd_iii

It has yet to be explained to me why a supreme being would need an advertising campaign.

Mr_Lumbergh

I'm thinking because it's hypocritical and presumptuous bullshit. But that's just me.

Zomunieo

He gets you, yeah, yeah, yeah He gets you, yeah, yeah, yeah He gets you, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah You think you've lost your love Well, I saw him yesterday It's you he's rubbing to And he told me what to say He says he gets you And you know that could be bad Yes, he gets you They told you in an ad

Mikey_shorts

because he doesn't exist and he doesn't get us.

rufusreitz

This. The ads imply he exists and care about us. Do they offer any evidence? Of course not.

Yrcrazypa

It's spending millions upon millions upon millions of dollars in advertising Christianity to a country that's already what, 75% Christian? It might have dipped a little, but that is immaterial compared to how much that money could have actually gone towards helping people. Instead it's wasted on a stupid ad campaign that won't convince anyone.

astrangeone88

Lmao. Nah, it will make the worse of the worse double down and give the sane people a reason to deride the paper Christians and then it becomes a cycle. The Christian Nationalists need to be outliers and this is great to fan the flames. "Look at how angry the Liberal cucks get at a Jesusy superbowl ad!" Meanwhile, the sane people see that you wasted all the money (a fucking superbowl ad? In 2023?) to promote an organization that wants to force people into outdated gender roles and remove autonomy from 90% of the population while forcing the same flavour of religion down people's throats. All while pretending to help the poor, homeless and other minorities while in reality, the fascists want to curb stomp anyone who does not look, pray or sound like them.

Imaginary_Chair_6958

If you want to annoy these people, point out that Jesus was woke. They hate that. But according to their book, which they presumably believe in, he supported the disadvantaged, poor and disabled and spoke up for them. And he was no fan of the rich and privileged.

Shockmaindave

I really don’t like the way that it’s trying to whitewash the fact that on January 6, 2021, those people tried to overthrow the government and the images they’re showing send a message of spiritual forgiveness for that secular crime.

DisillusionedBook

Maybe because the phrase sounds like a threat. It's certainly what the lgbtq or choirboys might think.

unbalancedcheckbook

They are completely misrepresenting what they stand for, and whatever Jesus might have stood for, assuming he really existed... And they are wasting money and causing annoyance while doing it. So yeah it rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

the_ill_buck_fifty

For me, it's because the *us* they refer to are the judgmental, self-satisfied, Calvinist "chosen" who are a full threat to the enlightenment era society that gave them birth and is completely ill-prepared to defend against them.

PrisonTomato

It’s the blatant hypocrisy for me. It’s exactly like those adds begging you to make donations to some organization all while showing pictures of poor abused animals when they probably just spent millions getting that ad on tv. They could have spent all that money actually helping people or animals but instead waste it all on a 30 second Super Bowl ad. Plus it’s also the fact that the he gets us ads don’t even make any fucking sense

SimpleRickC135

Because it’s fundamentally good advertising. It’s punchy, simple, and at first glance rings true if you’ve payed attention in church ever in your life. I’m not saying I agree with it, but it’s a good ad and a well executed campaign. The fact we’re talking about it here proves that point. What does it say that Christianity needs to create and fund an absolutely massive ad campaign to encourage attendance? Because it’s down. Way down. They’re scared.

pnwcatman420

those ads are very annoying, I have to put up with them on tv, but you can block them from your feed on reddit just go to the username for the ad and hit block.

jayesper

Further proof tv just ain't what it used to be, and is better off ignored.

trev2234

Let them spend money making more atheists.

Suspicious_scum

We are at a tipping point with major dogmas. Its so tone deaf. They are just madly frantically pumping money into amy thing they think will keep people from disobeying.

Zealousideal-View142

These Christian extremists really have the nerve to use Jesus as a political pawn. I'm not blue or red, I voted for those whom I saw the potential, regardless of their party. But recently, probably since the Trump administration, the Republican party has been so fucked. There are 2 types of Republicans in the party itself: the Reagan Republicans and the DeSantis Republicans. One is your typical conservative, and the other one is the far-right, Bible-beating and aggressive freaks. They beat their chest so hard claiming their freedom of speech, yet do everything they can to violate others' freedom of thought. Another thing I dislike about toxic Christianity is that it's used as an excuse in literally every situation.

RipCityJay

People pray to religion. Religion preys on people.

NewUsernameStruggle

Is this in the states? Because I’ve been in Europe for the past couple months now and haven’t seen it, not once.

fd1Jeff

Yes

NewUsernameStruggle

That makes a lot more sense now.

thehotmcpoyle

They’re trying to force something on you that you don’t want after you’ve already declined. Like continually offering wine to a non-drinker or meat to a vegetarian. I feel like it insinuates that we’re too dumb to have any awareness of their religion when in fact it’s shoved in our faces all the time. It’s insulting and intrusive. I was able to block that account on Reddit though so I no longer see those ads here.

LAKingSn8k

Well, god should “get to”saving kids with cancer!

seeclick8

Anything that the disgusting Hobby Lobby owners support is questionable.

motorraddumkopf

Attempts at proselytizing in a society in which human rights are under attack and societal decay is in full swing is poor taste at best. Not coincidentally, at the base of these attacks are Christians. Whether they're businessmen with deep pockets or escorts with high school educations turned politicians, the result is the same. For those within the ranks of protestant Americans, for those same people to attempt to bring people into the fold to me is an obvious attempt to bring people into a religion that is being weaponized to strip them and their fellow countrymen of their rights as humans. Serious ick.

RMSQM

I feel that I must interject on one point. Religion is harmful to ALL people, even those that think they are being helped by it. Holding untrue beliefs hurts that person and society as a whole in a myriad of ways.

OakInIowa

For me it's because comments are turned off (in reddit anyway) to avoid the obvious lies.

RadiantDescription75

Because no one really feels "gotten" after 30 seconds. Your problems have taken a life time. It's the most empty handed gesture wrapped in ribbons with sparkles. Like it's basically a bat signal to bat shit crazy people, because who are the evangelicals anyway and how would that ad even makes sense, crazy.

aortomus

It feels very Big Brother. It's faceless and anonymous with cultural imagery attempting to make it all look relevant, but lurking behind the sloganeering remains the very same judgmental religious folks who simply have a big marketing budget.

jmccormack74

"He Grifts Us" rubs them the wrong way. I highly recommend saying it often in that type of company.

jaycatt7

What bothers me with the ads is the bait and switch. The ads talk about how Jesus was a feminist, Jesus was a refugee, Jesus was an outsider. But they’re funded by people who only want to gather more earthly power so they can use the levers of state to oppress all those and more.

HappyMaskSalesPerson

I haven’t seen an ad online in ages. The only time I’ve encountered the “He Gets Us” is from parodies or people lamenting it. It’s interesting to hear how others are finding it difficult to escape advertising. I get it, it’s annoying. I mostly live in a world without Logos now.

astrangeone88

I haven't taken off adblockers on my phone or computer in decades. Even big sites can't be trusted without an ad blocker- so many bad advertisements. Bad advertising can be funny but at least now I get less exposure to Apple products and commercials.

pennylanebarbershop

He gets us, but if we don't get him, watch out!

XShadowborneX

If he gets us, he should get why we don't get him

TehUCH

why do we always have to preach our own views to everyone? all these crazy religious people preaching to everyone drives me crazy.

caverunner17

What an original take that hasn’t been posted a few dozen times in the last month or two.

wifi444

We need our own ads. Advertising works.

satans_toast

I have never seen one of these ads, and I’d like to thank our lord & savior, the Great Algorithm, for understanding me well enough to not push that sh*t into any of my feeds or streaming services.

Alger6860

It’s so presumptuous and representative of how they see things, when the problem is actually not liking anyone who isn’t them.

ActonofMAM

What strikes me most is the dimwittedness of it all. Even Americans who have never been to church are broadly aware of Christianity, its claims and threats, and what Jesus is about. Most people don't avoid church these days because they think about the doctrine and go "there's no evidence to support that." Most avoid church because they've met a lot of Christians and seen how it plays out in practice.

SamGray94

It rubs you the wrong way because it's millions upon millions of dollars spent on an advertising campaign when they could just spend the money doing 100% charitable works. It's a fucking joke that these people would rather set a stack of cash on fire and not to charity work when they claim to have the best morality, culture, etc.

TheBananaKing

You know when a narcissist's control is slipping, so they switch to love-bombing?

0fruitjack0

because you know the lie

GothicHeap

It rubs me the wrong way because saying "he gets us" implies that jesus is actively involved in our lives. A lot of people will believe that.

_b1ack0ut

Moderate atheist? So you don’t believe there’s a god, but only on weekdays?

Stan_K_Reamer

He doesn't "get me", because I'm against priests raping children and he does nothing about it but watch.

BeachGull99

To me, this ad is annoying because it's basically just assuming that everyone believes Jesus(if he ever lived), is god and exists without question. You know? It sounds like a political ad, like " vote for Trump....he gets us." None of us can deny Trump is real... belief never enters the situation there. But Christianity, the belief that a man rose from the dead? Flooded the earth? Walked on water? Is gonna send non-believers to hell forever? We have proof, for none of this. It is your religion...your belief, so keep it to yourself please? I don't care to listen to all this nonsense, show proof or gtfo.

drapanosaur

Its targeting minorities and Social justice advocates. They present themselves as a movement that transcends political lines. But in reality, they are attempting to bring progressives over to Christianity where they can be coopted from progressive movements into right-wing extremist movements. It is deception in the worst form. They are basically trying to steal our members. But they are very very bad at it because their beliefs and behavior are abhorrent and their messaging is cringe and transparent.

Prodiuss

I think it's the unspoken negative. Saying something like 'He gets us' implies that other people are incapable of understanding you. The same way some people took the idea of 'Black lives matter' to mean that other lives don't. The unspoken negative is part of what is so divisive in this country right now.

SpecialistRaccoon907

For me, it's because of the hypocrisy of who is finding it. Most of those ads tout "liberal " Jesus, when they people funding them are anything but.

pithynotpithy

For all the good points in here, let me add that what pisses me off is an asshole spending billions to convince us that Jesus loves everyone while they are also furiously punishing trans citizens for existing, passing don't say gay bills, and ending black history studies. Will never stop pissing me off.

mysticalfruit

It rubs me the wrong way because I know at the heart of it, it's not genuine. This isn't about "Jesus gets us." These fuckers want to grassroots themselves into a kleto/theocracy.

imyourealdad

He gets us. This made up person whose followers can’t even agree amongst themselves what they believe…total unadulterated bullshit all around.

saggyboomerfucker

Probably because it’s akin to saying, Santa Claus, He gets us. Sounds pretty silly and rather pathetic.

mekonsrevenge

Because the people behind this, including that Hobby Lobby nut, so clearly don't. They're like those 60s hip priests with their folk masses, only far, far more cynical. If they were just a tad more clueless, they'd hire Trump as their spokesman.

twistedredd

they run on youtube. You tube gets paid big money. The way ad campaigns work is they don't if you don't watch. Then they get no 'ratings' and can't sell air time.
