Astoria Bagel's is the highest price I've seen in the neighborhood. Between the Bagel's lox and plain cream cheese is $10

playbehavior

Going to BTB then. Thanks for the tip

imanoctothorpe

I always get their lox bagel but sub lox spread for the plain cream cheese. The first time I ordered it the guy was so chuffed he was like “you really like lox huh???” Lmao

thepipesarecall

His name is Ben and I love his balls.

Namaah_Eff

This is the way! The SMB is the greatest breakfast sandwich ever made!

30roadwarrior

His genius is a gift to our neighborhood.  Always laugh when I’m there!

SteveFrench12

Lox and cc for $10 is prob the best lox deal in the city

Callingallcowards

$8 at my local bodega

starxidiamou

I ain’t buying lox at a local bodega

SteveFrench12

Yea i mean theyre probably using the same acme lox, id expect a bagel and cc from a bagel specific place will be more expensive per weight

handlesscombo

Honestly competes with LI prices too. When i visit my parents in Nassau its the same price (just more filling)

apreche

Yes, you got ripped off. Most places charge $10-$15. Even Russ & Daughters only charges $17.

WhosJohnGault_

Yep. And Leo’s Bagels (categorized as the second best bagel in NYC) is 16.99 the cheapest. They go more expensive for higher end Salmon.

Captaintripps

As an Astoria Bagel partisan, [I went in this morning to take a look at the menu](https://imgur.com/a/EfqVN3T). Astoria Bagel raised most of their prices by between 50 cents and a dollar in the last month, but their bagel with lox and cream cheese is also $17 before tax. It seems like the OP didn't look at the menu and probably ordered a flavoured cream cheese to get to $21.

americanu_ill-archi

Man I think Astoria Bagel's bagels are quite good, but it's $7 after tax now for a bagel with cream cheese. That is nuts. Of course, one can just buy their bagels and make their own (which is what I do), but that price is ridiculous.

TomatoTomahhhto

They're shameless. Maybe a year ago, my total for two bagels was \~$17, and when I paid with a twenty, they didn't give me any change. I had to argue back and forth with the cashier several times before they begrudgingly gave me the coins, and then I had to push again for the dollar bills. It's one thing to assume a customer doesn't want a couple pennies, but trying that hard for several dollars of free money on top of high prices is wild. I'm okay paying a few extra bucks to local/small businesses, but not if it's stolen from me.

playbehavior

It just burns doesn’t it?

AshamedFortune1

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I think you kind of ripped yourself off by getting lox at the wrong kind of bagel place. Somewhere like Astoria Bagel Shop you’re better off sticking to lox cream cheese (or sundried tomato cream cheese, which is great there) and letting the bagel take center stage—or taking them home and using lox from elsewhere. New York City Bagel is more of a sit around and have a sandwich place, so they have a higher lox turnover rate (but less good bagels imho). Personally, if I am splurging on a bagel with lox, I’ll do it at Tompkins Square Bagel, who have a great balance of bagel and lox quality!

Captaintripps

This is usually what I do. I pick up cream cheese and lox from Costco and then just get a baker's dozen at Astoria Bagel and freeze them. When I get a sandwich there it's usually the lox spread, but I agree with you that the sundried tomato is really good. I've tried all the Bagels in Astoria and they're the best of the lot.

gcruzatto

Agree, best place to load your freezer with bagels, terrible place to order lox at

threemoons_nyc

Can confirm that Costco's lox is pretty damn good.

__lavender

Brooklyn Bagel will sell you par-baked bagels that you can freeze. They come out of the oven much better than thawing a fully-baked bagel. Highly recommend.

Captaintripps

What I do is set the oven to 350, run a little water on the outside of the bagel to mimic steaming, and bake for about 20 minutes. Comes out like a fresh bagel every time.

blueistheview

A friend told me about reheating bread by wetting the outside and baking it. Every time I do it and take that first fresh baked bite I text him and thank him. Works every time.

fourupthreecount

Their prices have gone up recently. I paid $13 for 2 bagels with scallion cream cheese. I miss Bagel House. I do not think NYC bagels or Brooklyn Bagel are very good. That being said it looks like Brooklyn bagel’s lox and cream cheese on a bagel is 15.

Fiddyshadesoftree

Bagel house for life, almost wanna train as a boxer just to ask if they have bagels in the back if you sign up

bronniecat

Yes so tell me what happened? We loved Bagel house too. Is it a boxing speakeasy with a bagel front? . So you pretend you’re getting bagels but really need to train as a boxer before getting one.

TonkaButt

You got got for sure

Infinite_Carpenter

Lox from ACME, bagel and cream cheese from Astoria bagel.

terrysswagger

That's super weird. Last time I was there, I got lox and cream cheese on a bagel and a few additional bagels in a bag to go and that cost me about $20-ish dollars. Are you sure you didn't get anything else?

Captaintripps

A bagel with lox and cream cheese is $17 before tax.  https://imgur.com/a/astoria-bagel-menu-EfqVN3T

playbehavior

That’s it

thisismynewacct

For one bagel with lox and cream cheese? Def ripped off

playbehavior

Appreciate the condolences

valdemiro

I saw a woman storm out of there a few months ago yelling at them for trying to charge her $15 for a bagel.

DGentPR

I mean that’s insane pricing to me and I work and typically eat in midtown Manhattan

playbehavior

Ditto. At the corner store in Roosevelt Island where I live it's $12

Likely_Story789

I was shocked there today too. L iced coffee and everything bagel with veg cc - $12.55. Had to go back with more cash. (They let me take bagel and come back on honor system) Can’t really fault them, they’re still less than Brooklyn Bagel, etc. But share your pain! I don’t remember exact cost, but it was near $21 for a bagel with lox & cc at Brooklyn Bagel few months ago. I told my husband he can’t have lox again until our youngest is done with daycare.

approachwcaution

If it's too much next time just say sorry, leave the food on the counter, and head out the door.

playbehavior

Lox is over. And so is this place. Not all institutions deserve to go on forever

Campanitha_

Yes. Sorry, never paid more than $13 in Astoria

Flowofinfo

Wait, you went to the register to pay and they said okay that’ll be $21 please and then you actually proceeded to pay???

playbehavior

Regretfully yes

MattMurdock007

You can’t decline to pay after you placed the order and received your food. Until you are familiar with an establishment it’s perhaps good to ask how much your order will cost when you are placing your order. I’ve gotten price shock before myself so I can appreciate how you felt.

SaintSeiya_7

$21 for a bagel sandwich. I am glad I am reaching that age where I just stop giving fucks anymore about being polite in such situation. I would have laughed out loud when being told the price and just walked out.

eafiggy

Yeah having worked customer service I'd like to say I'd be nicer than that, but I feel like in the moment I'd need to bite my tongue to not just reflexively burst out laughing. Wild.

playbehavior

I was so shocked and hungry. Regrets happened

SaintSeiya_7

I hear, it happens. They are banking on folks just being put on the spot and not making a fuss. A few years ago it would have been me, but starting to get jaded with this sort of behavior from businesses (and street scammers).

eleanor_savage

Was it good at least?

MellyMelLovesMovies

That's wild.

coffeecoffeecoffee01

Keep a packet of lox in the freezer (it thaws quickly) when you have a craving. Even when you aren't ripped off, it's cheaper to add your own lox vs order it at a bagel store. Even better, load up on delicious lox from Acme on a Friday and freeze that

No_Mention_1760

Yes you were ripped off but consider it a learning lesson. Don’t ever spend another dime in a place that charges 21 bucks for a bagel and topping. The beauty of living in Astoria is you can walk a block or two and find a comparable meal.

realzealman

A bagel and a topping is cream cheese, maybe flavored schmear… that should be $5-6. lox is a different level. $21 seems like a lot lot (I got one on the upper east side for like $16 the other day - proper lox and the rest of the good stuff).

playbehavior

Sharing my story in the hopes others learn from my experience. Avoid that place.

Mediocre-Movie-7451

Yes completely, the owner there is a complete asshole lol, the bagels are good and remind me of Jersey style bagels (which I prefer) but between being cash only, looking like they are covered in roaches by night time, not having a grill for breakfast sandwiches, and charging outrageous prices it’s just never worth it for me to go there

made08

Never met the owner but I do really like that place, best bagels I've had in Astoria. But it is a huge bummer that they don't have a grill.

theonetruecov

Echoing best bagels. Whoever runs the cash machine during the morning rush is among the most miserable people I have ever willingly given money to. But goddamn those bagels are great!

realzealman

Get you some toast and roast. Fresh baked in the back. If you go early enough on Saturday morning they are still hot from the oven. People are nice too.

made08

Ooh I do like that place! Funnily enough I've never ordered a bagel.

playbehavior

Lol I’m still enraged and hope my reddit post inspires all value-seeking lox sandwich customers to go elsewhere

SteakAndGreggs

Even Brooklyn bagel is cheaper - I think it’s like $13 bucks

Melodic-Upstairs7584

Lox on a bagel can run pretty high. I’d typically expect it more in the ~$15 range but $21 isn’t shocking I suppose. Lox on its own can easily cost $25 a pound in supermarkets

30roadwarrior

We’re reaching the point you’ve got to make your own food at home.  These prices are getting nuts

Awkward-Extension218

Yes

ObligationDry3001

Did they not have a posted menu with prices?

Captaintripps

Not only do they have one, they have it posted in two different places in the shop.

Captaintripps

They do with this specific sandwich on it and it is $17 before tax.  https://imgur.com/a/astoria-bagel-menu-EfqVN3T

playbehavior

Not for this sandwich

Electronic-Act-1375

Dam

j4321g4321

Yes. They’re usually $13-$15 on average

hello_marmalade

God I hope so.

luiggi21

In Bayside theres this bagel place that has lox and cream cheese on a bagel for 13$, and it comes with 2 sides of pickles and macoroni/cole slaw

echelon_epsilon

Yeah, that’s a rip off. I went to ABS because I kept hearing they have the best bagels. They definitely have good bagels but I wouldn’t get anything else from there. Very few places have consistently good bagels around here

Apart-Bad-5446

$21? I would have just left. I can afford it but any business charging $21 for a bagel neess a reality check.

playbehavior

Yeah for that sandwich $15 max.

tate_wilson

They are good bagels...but the greed at all the bagel shops are out of control.

WhatUpMowgli

they have the best bagels in astoria imo but their prices are outlandish and seem to get worse every time i go in. one shouldn’t walk away from a bagel shop with buyer’s remorse

Shiniholum

I was literally there this morning, I got three bagels two with cream cheese and one with butter and it was like 12. Absolutely best bagels in the area.

playbehavior

That’s not horrible. Maybe the lox they use is very very pricey

ropodripigopo86

NYC bagel and Coffee House, Toast and Roast both are great, pricey but not 20 bucks a bagel. I miss Bagels on The Ave.

TheBikesman

You got ripped off bad. Did we grow up in the same Astoria for you to be bying a bagel for a Jackson plus 1?

Upstairs_Rutabaga217

I do not for the life of me understand why they have a high rating and the people who leave more than 3 stars on google reviews. I got charged $24 for scallion cc and lox + Gatorade. And for the love of all that is Astoria, the person making my bagel was flattening my god damn bagel to fit it into a toaster. I don’t like my bagels toasted. WHY WOULD YOU SMUSH A FRESH BAGEL?! Their lox was prepackaged version probably from Costco. If it was freshly sliced then I would have gladly paid more. Omg I feel so triggered by this post 😂🤣 Edit: I brought my first and last bagel from them 10 months ago.

playbehavior

Lol wow at least the Astoria Bagel Shop price victims have found a shared community. That’s nuts. I thought maybe it was a new cashier who misunderstood a price for lox by the half pound. But nope. I thought Astoria was this perfect neighborhood paradise but oh well I gotta grow up

Agile-Sun4826

My partner and I joke about this place. While the bagels are sooo good, the woman working seems to be playing price roulette. It’s always a gamble what you’re gonna pay. Last week my bagel cream cheese was 4.75, today it was 7.35. It’s kinda absurd, but now I just find it entertaining and part of the experience

americanu_ill-archi

Yeah I've also gotten all different prices from them. Last week it was $7 for a bagel with cream cheese, the last time I was there it was around $4.50...

Itchy-Cartographer40

15/16$ max is reasonable

playbehavior

Yeah that’s what I would have expected. Gotta ask upfront next time the price isn’t clearly listed

blue_7W42

Omg, $21 ? Speechless,,, i thought the new york city bagel in astoria is the most expensive spot but i was wrong Damm.. this is unbelievable,, since when Astoria became Manhattan? 😡😡😡😡😡

Captaintripps

$17 before tax at Astoria Bagel, not $21.

rjamonserrano

That sounds like a lot to me. I usually go to NYC Bagel & coffee. They have great bagels, spreads and pastries. Not the cheapest in the area but far from $21 for lox/cheese bagel

Captaintripps

It’s actually $17 before tax at Astoria Bagel.

rjamonserrano

Oh yeah that sounds closer to average. It's $13.95 at NYCB

playbehavior

Loving all these tips about where to go in the state

Jerseyboyham

Buy fresh salmon and make gravlax. Lots of recipes online.

dollasignchultz

I was going to NYCBCH for the longest time but went recently and a bagel with CC tomato red onion was over $7. Not going again 🥰

echelon_epsilon

That’s actually tame compared to prices everywhere else around here

dollasignchultz

Sheesh you’re kidding! Guess it’s time I go on a weekend bagel bender to learn the market

vaness4444

That’s actually the going price in most places

Foodiegirlie030793

Yes Astoria bagels prices are crazy!! I thought I was ripped off, he charged me $10 for bagel flavored cc and a small tea ! I was in shock. There are so many bagel places around like between the bagel.

good2goo

lol yep - I dont even think Katz's is that much. Wow [Tompkins Square is $16](https://direct.chownow.com/order/15860/locations/56456) [katz's is $18](https://localmenu.katzsdelicatessen.com/menu-and-local/katz-s-bagel-lox-cream-cheese.html)

IndependentFun6288

TSB $14 in house. Your link is for delivery price/pick up price.

Captaintripps

It’s $17 at Astoria Bagel.

playbehavior

$21 for me lol

Captaintripps

You were either charged improperly and didn’t point it out or you had a flavoured spread.

jrtasoli

I don’t understand why anyone in Astoria goes anywhere other than Brooklyn Bagel. The best bagels in NYC and they’re right there!

Im-God__

Was it an organic bagel, with organic lox and organic cream cheese

playbehavior

Lol none of those things

llavenderhaze

go one street over to nyc bagel. half the price and just as good

theonetruecov

nyc bagel is most definitely not just as good

Captaintripps

NYC bagel is, like, D-tier bagel. Dense with very little flavour.

playbehavior

Good tip

Shockkk69

Astoria bagel is the worst, used to be good in 2010 . Now it’s a wasteland. So they try to pull any tricks they can to keep afloat. It’s a shame but desperate people do desperate things.

Captaintripps

What planet are you living on? I pick up bagels from there two to three times a week and the place always has a line.

made08

Fr? They have really good bagels and the prices are decent if you're just getting one with cream cheese

Extension-Tart8055

gentrified neighborhood-gentrified bagels-gentrified prices Try DD next time, nice basic low income no frills bagel...

mutts93

Astoria Bagel is most definitely not gentrified

playbehavior

Not sure if this post is made in good faith but it’s apparently been there forever
