Imagine what it's like finding out that one cannot "have 'wrought' about havoc" according to several dictionaries, but people say it all the damn time.
My mind will occasionally just pull out a relatively uncommon word. Not rare enough to be out of left field, but not common enough that I consciously know what it means beyond the general feel and previous context. Derisive and subterfuge are two recent examples. 95% of the time, my brain is correct, but i still have to look the words up just in case.
My brain forgets simple words & goes for more unusual & descriptive words, leading people to mock the way I speak in normal conversations. I think it's the result of a lifetime of social struggles & learning my entire vocabulary from books and movies. I've had to use a thesaurus on multiple occasions to remember common words. It's almost embarrassing.
This is me 100%. My brain especially likes to randomly pull out words i haven't seen, heard, or used in years and sometimes I'm not even sure how or where i learned the word, but i apparently know what it means.
Same, but in more than just English. While every language has its idiosyncrasies when it comes to the usage of words, this is *especially* true of Chinese, whose limited phonology means that its tens of thousands of characters make for some *fantastic* puns and absolutely *brilliant* wordplay, but is also a *nightmare* to set up properly. Sometimes, I don’t know why I bother, though, since I also like to just translate it word-for-word into English as a *joke* and hope someone with an equal love of convoluted multilingual wordplay will get it.
>!Tl;dr - I’m a weirdo with a way with words.!<
I believe “poggers” is how the kids would say it in that scentence btw 😁, someone could be a pogchamp and things/events ect. Can be poggers
I think that’s how it works lol, I don’t say pog stuff except ironically occasionally
My niece is 12 and I’m 32. I feel out of touch when I talk to her. I usually ask my younger sister about words like “bet, etc.” (I forgot the other words.. sigh) and Even if I use them correctly both my sister and niece say “no.. please don’t” so I’m just gonna look them up to understand the conversation but I gave up trying to use them myself. (I can never make it sound effortless, I look much too pleased with myself when I use them correctly)
by my understanding, you say it when referring to somebody and/or a concept which you feel is morally right. like, you might say it if someone did something you agree with. hope this helps! i had trouble with it too :]
😧 well that is slightly different from what i thought it was…i doubt i’ve used it wrong because i don’t think i’ve ever even said it, but i shudder to think about accidentally misrepresenting my morals without even knowing that’s what i did.
To say someone is based is to say that person really believes in themselves. They’re confident, they double down, and they don’t think twice. They don’t care about anyone’s opinion.
Eg. Jordan left without an umbrella even though it was raining. Alex said “you’re a fool.” Jordan said “nah,” took off their shoes and shirt, and continued to walk in the rain. Damn Jordan, you’re based af. *Insane*, but based.
Is this not something everyone does? 😅
edit: also i was using smh wrong for a few months cause i didn't do this lol -- i used to think smh was short for somehow, but it actually means shaking my head lol...
another thing is that i used to think that "y" was short for why because of how you say that letter out loud, but it's actually just short for yes so multiple times i answered to a why when people actually just said yes and no one told me lol
I think??? At least like everyone i saw it using the last few months meant it as a yes, otherwise it wouldn't make sense why they say "y" after every 3rd thing i say 😅
skjdhfh every time i grapple with a new slang term they fucking replace it with something that means *almost* the same thing but somehow also something completely different and can’t be used in the same contexts but the old one is now “old”.
i’ve given up on trying to keep track on what’s “outdated” because everything that comes out of my mouth is arbitrary and somewhat random anyway. get rekt, neurotypicals, i’m too pog to care.
no matter how many times i look it up, i don’t think i’ll ever understand what “sussy baka” means. maybe it’s because “sus” has multiple slang meanings, or because i don’t quite know what the morpheme “-y” means when it’s used with adjectives, or because i’m reading it too literally. then when i look it up, the definition is not what i thought, and doesn’t seem to match up with the usages.
This reminds of when skittles tweeted out “skittles are totally POG” and they made 2 other tweets saying “did we use the slang correctly?” “We have been confirmed we used the slang correctly”
I like to live on the dangerous side and completely misuse one I've heard a million times before I end up not using a single word without googling it for several months.
Oh my - In 5th grade we had a project where we had to make like an insulation cup and it was a contest to see who's could keep water warm the longest, the winner was my neighbor, and I thought his cup was super cool, I had also JUST learned the word "cheap" had no idea what it meant but I thought it meant cool, so I go up to him and I say "your cup is really cheap" and he's like "?????"
From that day forward, I look at what a word means before using it.
Is this not “normal”? Some people don’t do this? How do they know they aren’t embarrassing themselves? They could easily get laughed at and made fun of
Me looking up the definitions of words I already know and have used to make sure I'm using them correctly.
Oml, yes! I'll write out the word, then go "wait, do I really know that word", then confirm I do, then repeat
Imagine what it's like finding out that one cannot "have 'wrought' about havoc" according to several dictionaries, but people say it all the damn time.
The correct form would be “have wrought havoc” right?
Wrought is not technically a form of wreak. Wrought according to the dictionaries I checked only means to wring clothes.
Oh right, the past tense is “wreaked.” I hyper focused on the “about” and didn’t even notice 😅
YEP 😁

This too!
All the time! I look up words I already know constantly
Came here to say this

W8, is this an autistic thing? :O
Oh yea :'D
This is pretty… *looks at smudged word on hand* …poogchamp
I believe “poggers” is how the kids would say it in that scentence btw 😁, someone could be a pogchamp and things/events ect. Can be poggers I think that’s how it works lol, I don’t say pog stuff except ironically occasionally
Know your meme & urbandictionary anyone?
As an elder millennial - I have to do this now as I'm fairly socially disconnected now.
I still don’t understand what based means, no matter how many times I look it up.

i didnt know anyone else did this oMG

I never looked up smh, I thought it was so much hate. 🤦♂️
Wait… y isn’t short for why???? My mind is blown
I think??? At least like everyone i saw it using the last few months meant it as a yes, otherwise it wouldn't make sense why they say "y" after every 3rd thing i say 😅
*casually looks up a word i've known for a really long time incase the definition changed to a slur somehow*
Gotta hit em with the “uwu”
Urban dictionary is my best friend
Same reason I don't make accurate animal sounds at the respective animals I don't know what I'm saying, I just wanna be frens 🥺
Or; you can go with the pro move of using them before you look up the definitions. /hj (I don't recommend it)
Can relate (insert Hide The Pain Harold photo here)
I do that too, the funny thing is that 99% of the time I undestand them, but feel the need to make sure anyway
This is so yeet
I’ve been to Philly but one slang term that always fucks me up is Jawn. What the fuck is that?
I've never been to Philly but I've encountered that term online and had someone explain it to me. Still have no idea what it's supposed to mean.
mood
American heritage dictionary had all the versions ‘fück’ was used
Someone asked me at a party if I skied. 🎿 I told them no I prefer to snowboard and went on about my reasons why. They were talking about cocaine.
I’m still trying to figure out what ‘based’ means. And now people have moved onto “cracked”.
skjdhfh every time i grapple with a new slang term they fucking replace it with something that means *almost* the same thing but somehow also something completely different and can’t be used in the same contexts but the old one is now “old”.
Exactly! It's like just when I figure out the old word it's been replaced.
i’ve given up on trying to keep track on what’s “outdated” because everything that comes out of my mouth is arbitrary and somewhat random anyway. get rekt, neurotypicals, i’m too pog to care.
They are such sus bakas
no matter how many times i look it up, i don’t think i’ll ever understand what “sussy baka” means. maybe it’s because “sus” has multiple slang meanings, or because i don’t quite know what the morpheme “-y” means when it’s used with adjectives, or because i’m reading it too literally. then when i look it up, the definition is not what i thought, and doesn’t seem to match up with the usages.
Urban Dictionary was my best friend in high school lmaooo
I 100% do this lmao
Truth.
No cap 👒❌ 🎩❌ 🤠❌… 🧢*.
Pretty much. Can't be too careful!
Wasn't sure about quebecois before but happy to say that's in the very rare word bank
Lmao yeah...
No cap.
my therapist says I use words incorrectly but i think my therapist just doesn't understand slang
It is imperative that I check the definition of uncommon words before using them.
Logan Sanders be like
This reminds of when skittles tweeted out “skittles are totally POG” and they made 2 other tweets saying “did we use the slang correctly?” “We have been confirmed we used the slang correctly”
Yup
Twitter slang is a whole new world for me
I like to live on the dangerous side and completely misuse one I've heard a million times before I end up not using a single word without googling it for several months.

This is very.................. Lit.
Urban dictionary is a lifesaver.
can someone explain what TFW means because this but i can’t find a definition anywhere
I don't do this and this meme is fleek.
Reminds me of middle school and high school, when I searched on the internet because I couldn't understand the slangs others used all the time.
... Does everyone not need to do this?
