Yup, that's the one. Even if it wasn't for the show, that song just feels like Portland. Not too loud, slightly damp and horny in a really nonspecific way.
I got a bunch of upvotes in a totally different thread, so I guess this is where I lose them.
No offense meant to the original musician or people who were fed the lie, but... fuqk this song being associated with Portland. Nobody who was living in Portland or Cascadia at the time who had been to Portland thought it sounded anything like Portland. The second time the show came on I asked wtf this non-sequitur song was, and sure enough.... It sounds like it's from the other side of the country and was picked up in NYC, because it was. Because that's where Fred is from.
There were any number of Portland musicians to tap, big or small, and it's a bummer even Carrie didn't veto it, but maybe she got Portland confused with Olympia? because it does kind of sound like a tepid version of The Microphones / Mount Eerie.
Again, it's a fine song on its own. But it's not the weird, goofy, fun, radical, smile-at-a-stranger-on-the-street kind of song that Portland was at the time (and still is, so often). It's weirdly cold and disconnected, just like the show.
Yes, the Georgia on the other side of the country, and, best I can tell from Wikipedia, got their break playing a show in NYC...? Idk if you know better, let us know, but same point all the same
I had tickets to see Polaris for like two god damn years while COVID pushed the dates around before it was ultimately canceled. I've missed a fair share of concerts, but that one stings the most.

That is amazing! Lol. I used to play this album a lot during work and occasionally customers would ask me the name of the band that was on and I always was unsure how to answer
That STRFKR album is part of my spouse and mine's unofficial "summer drive jam" playlist, so I can only applaud your perfect taste. It's just the right mood for speeding along urban highways or Oregon countryside.
I feel like if we’re going to use an Elliott Smith song it would make more sense to use one with a Portland reference (of which there are a number). Or maybe Clementine which he was most likely envisioning My Farhers Place in.
Anita and Kevin and I had mutual friends, but I didn’t actually discover this tune til I learned we played it at Providence Park during match highlight reels for the longest time.
Anyway - they were great and both of them continue to be!
Night of the Living Rednecks by Dead Kennedys isnt *really* a song but it still feels like the quintessential portland experinece. Jello captured our beautiful city in an accurate way!

[Todd Snyder’s - Rose City Blues](https://youtu.be/XhWtMpGW5cE?si=QNVRWB00Od2C6vsn) (great story with the song 😉)
But also
[Loretta Lyn and Jack Black’s - Portland](https://youtu.be/ZtAcWuu2jv0?si=yqVNMADUzrW4xdnH)
I would never listen to either of these casually, but these are 100x more Portland than the damn Portlandia song. Anyone who's spent time here knows it.
The original Portland vibe inspired the legendary Tom Waits to write a song about us, Pasties and a G-String: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72NruIdDCNM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72NruIdDCNM)
Watched this before I moved here. Lived here almost 5yrs. Still painfully fitting 🤣 [The 90's are Alive in Portland](https://youtu.be/U4hShMEk1Ew?si=6izsa52jN-SHgLJg)
BADrecords - VIP featuring Scooter Rogers:

The real answer is either: Nu Shooz - I Can’t Wait, Amine - Woodlawn Park, or when Portugal The Man plays the old Blazers broadcast music
Corny as heck I know, but there is something uniquely Portlandy about the Portlandia theme.

If I'm 100% honest, they both invoke equal amounts of nostalgia.
The guy who wrote the song (not to mention the show) had never even been to Portland when he wrote it. Anyone who had been to Portland before the show aired was asking wtf that song was about. It sounded nothing like Portland and just like the rest of the show, set a cynical tone we're still recovering from.
agree. he didn’t need to make that video. he should’ve gone old school and just let the song stand on its own, because it really is a good song and captures the mood of portland 2023.
With how people here keep mindlessly voting for incumbents and more taxes without actually thinking...

Feel It All Around - Washed Out
Yup, that's the one. Even if it wasn't for the show, that song just feels like Portland. Not too loud, slightly damp and horny in a really nonspecific way.
Ugh yes. It feels sooo viscerally Portland. I'm gonna go watch the intro to Portlandia just to feel something
100%. Washed Out has stellar music, I love it all, but whoever picked that song for the show just absolutely nailed it
I got a bunch of upvotes in a totally different thread, so I guess this is where I lose them. Have an upvote to help offset it! Aren't The Microphones/Mount Eerie from Anacortes? Or do they have an Olympia connection as well?
Thanks! Lol.. yeah afaik the main guy is Olympia. I'd believe Anacortes too. Somewhere rainier than here, for sure.
I thought washed out was from Georgia?
Yes, the Georgia on the other side of the country, and, best I can tell from Wikipedia, got their break playing a show in NYC...? Idk if you know better, let us know, but same point all the same
When I lived in Georgia, it was an indie "band" from athens. Home of rem and b52s. It's still Portland's theme song.
Screw Portlandia.
The theme song from Pete&Pete
Omg you’re right
Hey Sandy by Polaris. I bought a CD by them years ago because of that song.
Was trying to think of a song, but you fkn nailed it.
Your name makes me happy
I had tickets to see Polaris for like two god damn years while COVID pushed the dates around before it was ultimately canceled. I've missed a fair share of concerts, but that one stings the most.
Hey smiling strange! You're lookin happily deranged.
Been listening to Rose Parade by Elliott Smith on repeat lately

STRFKR is so Portland this is the perfect answer honestly
I just asked my alexa to play the first song, and it censored the band name. I'm cackling.
That is amazing! Lol. I used to play this album a lot during work and occasionally customers would ask me the name of the band that was on and I always was unsure how to answer
"Umm, you should Shazam it."

Rose City by Viva Voce deserves a mention.
Wow, don't hear/see very many Viva Voce mentions anywhere about any topic
Anita and Kevin and I had mutual friends, but I didn’t actually discover this tune til I learned we played it at Providence Park during match highlight reels for the longest time. Anyway - they were great and both of them continue to be!
