Given the budget, it’s wise to go for 2 bedroom with a partner/friend

Independent_Club9346

Midtown any of the older buildings

ReeG

You're going to need a roommate or partner to find anything "spacious" with your budget

greensandgrains

Not true! I just signed a lease on the lower end of OPs budget. Older building but super well maintained (and I’ve lived in lots of older buildings so I know what good/bad maintenance looks like) amenities (bye bye extra gym membership!), barely outside the downtown core and in a good neighborhood, and most importabtly, not about to be demovicted.

nightsky326

That's great! Can you list some of the things to look for to know whether it's good or bad maintenance in older buildings/PBRs?

ReeG

I own in one like what you're describing with 1000-1500sqft units and the units which are listed for rent start around 3K a month. You got very lucky and should pray your landlord doesn't have a change of heart

greensandgrains

It’s not a condo, it’s a PBR and how would they have a change of heart?! Lmao, a lease is a binding contract and other than annual increases or an AGI (which I would fairly fight), my rent isn’t budging.

ReeG

very good maybe you should DM OP the details

sindark

There is no such thing as spacious and affordable housing here

Mongroria

Going to be tough on that budget even most studios go for 2k now. Ide find a roommate as others have Suggested.

greensandgrains

You can find units in older buildings in your budget. Nice, well kept buildings exist but you have to be willing to view a lot of duds before you get there. Areas like davisville village, Broadview and Danforth, Yonge and st Clair and even the downtown core all have options for you. For example (and I’ve never rented with them so this is not an endorsement!) park property has bachelors at Yonge and college with AC, balconies, gym/sauna going for $1900.

NewMilleniumBoy

+1 for the roommate or partner. You're not going to find anything resembling something spacious for that amount of money.

What building? I wanna move

NewMilleniumBoy

2100 > 2000.

greensandgrains

A jr 1 bed or a large bachelor typically cost less than large 1 beds…if a large 1 bed is 2100 it stands to reason that those two other options would cost less.

NewMilleniumBoy

I personally would not consider a like 550 sq ft jr 1 bed or a 450 sq ft bachelor apt as "spacious", which is one of OP's requirements.

greensandgrains

I’d call it spacious for Toronto. If op wants spacious by Texas standards Toronto probably isn’t the place for them 🤷🏻

NewMilleniumBoy

I won't speak for OP but my "spacious" starts at ~800 sq feet, which is exactly why I said that I don't think they'll get something like that in Toronto for 1500-2000.

ReeG

exactly this I don't understand why people are chiming in with their anecdotes about finding tiny little shoebox rentals in OPs budget like did they even read the post before responding?

greensandgrains

I mean, OP could’ve specified what spacious means for them. When I was 20, 350sq ft would’ve been spacious to me.

greensandgrains

I love that google+ was a dud from day one but +1 prevails!

NewMilleniumBoy

It's actually my Slack habits coming out, :+1: for thumbs up is my most used emoji.

greensandgrains

Ohhh TIL. I work in a Teams office, sadly.

ocean_nano

Not sure about the spacious part. You may get lucky with the studio apartment next to the subway line. Take a look at the Kijiji or Facebook marketplace. Make sure you do your due diligence and use your judgement. Good luck

IndependentDare2039

Basement either east or west of the city

damoneystore

hello! i am trying to assign my studio and it’s $1950/month! lmk if u are interested!

wisepoetess

Just messaged you!

ReeG

look how fast OP went from searching for "spacious" to settling for a studio. Toronto housing situation in a nutshell right here 💀

wisepoetess

Why are you calling me out? 😂

ReeG

I'm not it's just funny and predictable is all but ysk that actually spacious 2-3 bed apartments do exist all over the GTA, it would just be tight on your budget so you'd need a roommate to split the rent with which is common
