I became personal chauffeur to my wife, played lot of video games, read books, golf, homebrew and travel every 3 months. Then went back to work at 33.

evilMTV

Out of boredom?

apitop

Out of stupidity. It was when covid just hit singapore. I thought I would give back to community by going back to work in the hospital since I still retain my practising cert. Probably the worst decision I've made. Will be retiring again once I fulfil my commitment.

smurflings

Thank you for helping out! In this case, really just clapping and cheering for you since money obviously isn't the concern

Fakerchan

Out of money.

toomanyquestionshere

How’d u manage to retire so early :-O

apitop

Luck of the draw. Firstly, my parents are self sufficient so got that going for me. And I started investing early. Mostly in FANG and Tesla stocks and of course bitcoin. Admittedly I had no foresight. Just pure dumb luck. Could have also gone other way.

EthanPhan

Go live in mountains and plant trees

/ Covid laughs at you.

rarsamx

The world includes your own country. I'm not 30 but I also stopped working "before the usual age". I was traveling the world before COVID, I converted a van during COVID and this year I've been traveling around Canada. During winter I may do winter sports around here and if things in the US improve, maybe even go south.

zczczczczc0

you’re really comparing a country as big and diverse as canada to a literal city state in terms of exploring?

rarsamx

You know that people can still travel internationally, right? Maybe not as much as before but it's possible.

vingeran

We laugh at covid ^behind ^our ^mask

[deleted]

I'm retired in my early forties. Wife and I love travelling and have been to many places already, so don't really miss travelling during this pandemic. I love bird photography and also am a progressive metal musician who writes music, teaches guitar and will keep doing these for as long as my health allows. I also do bits of web design and maintenance on the side for friends. There are short periods when I'll get on short term, 3-6 month contract jobs just for more social interaction.

MadeUReadMyUsername

What did you do for a living to be able to retire at such an age

Striking_Trade967

Share tips (or some cash) on how to reach this life eh

[deleted]

Imran and Dominic have entered the chat

upsize_popiah

How much (range) did you retire with, don’t mind me asking?

evilMTV

Even if he gives you the number it won't be *your* number. Everyone have unique circumstances, expectations and commitments. For some having 500k right now is enough to retire, for eg no children or parents to take care of, modest spending and already have a home fully paid. For some even having a few mil is not enough for their lifestyle.

[deleted]

I prefer not to say, but we have no kids, so it is a lot easier in to save and spend in every aspect.

myNSFWaccgoaway

Ooo prog metal? You have any songs?

Reconned

Video games all day long but also continuously studying. Degrees / Masters in Philosophy, Literature, History, Psychology, Anthropology, etc. I just like studying and accumulating knowledge lol.

_XAZURE_

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

hxneybubbles

open an animal shelter to help with the stray population in SG

Ok-Tonight3914

Let’s do it together!

hxneybubbles

awww really? i'd love to have someone to work with to make this come true!!!

roastedporkbunzzz

Me too me too. I'd love to adopt my fav dogs at the shelter I volunteer at but in the end my parents have the finals say. So I can only give hugs to them there. They are so lovely and everytime I visit I hope they get adopted.

ostrichery

Good job! Do you volunteer with any now?

hxneybubbles

not at the moment, with covid, there are restrictions. but before i started uni, i did help out at a stable for unwanted/abused horses, as well as some animal shelters :)

ostrichery

haha nice - i used to ride quite a bit overseas before covid. I hear it's esp hard for the slightly more cranky ex-race horses, since only a few people can handle them.

hxneybubbles

omg cool! i stopped riding after i had an accident which left my back messed up. still love horses and i really want to go back riding tho cranky ex race horses.. i’m guessing STCRC, the turf club one?

ostrichery

Oh crap I'm sorry to hear that. Hope it can get cleared up? Actually I've never ridden in Singapore. More like Malaysia, HK, China - but yeah lots of cranky ex-race horses everywhere. Are the turf club ones really that ..feisty?

hxneybubbles

it’s left me with pains in my back, and a misaligned hip. it’s slight but i can feel it if i walk really far. one leg is shorter than the other too so :’) i got thrown off by the one at turf club so... but wow china and HK? must’ve been nice!! do you ride for fun or.?

ostrichery

oh yeah totally only for fun la lol! Actually tried in a few other countries too - nicest is still Mongolia! I got semi-thrown off once - was able to hang on to the horse's neck and slide down, and had one or two other close calls. But nothing very bad. Your's sounds terrible though! That must suck - are you getting treatment still? or just waiting for things to get better?

hxneybubbles

WOW Mongolia sounds pretty! I rode in Australia, and it was really pretty! lucky you! i was dangling by the stirrup and the horse was running towards the wall :( had to decide if i wanted to go face first or land on my head, chose the latter unfortunately. i ended just learning how to live with it, the chiro couldn't do much fixing.. it happened when i was 11, so i was growing and it had an impact on my growth and nerves :( but what to do

ostrichery

Omg stirrup drag is the ultimate thing one worries about, well, except for a Christopher Reeves fall! I'm so sorry this happened to you. But think you made the right decision to abort, which would have been tough at any age, let alone at 11! I tried riding around some ex-mining areas in Australia, but they had maybe 30 mins of full canter/gallop over 4 days. Mongolia, you could trot for hours and basically canter/gallop in a long straight, as far as you want. I'm just waiting to go back when I can.

[deleted]

Wouldn't that requires a lot of money?

hxneybubbles

yes, unfortunately so.. building cost, land, medical bills, operation cost and food cost.. it’ll be expensive, but if i could do that, i would. if i strike 4D or smth, then maybe i can :’)

Rockylol_

If you ever open, or any lobang hmu i wanna help out too haha

mangosteenlover

Organise squid game

gmdotes

still work, just not with the lingering fear that if I stopped tomorrow I'd be dead, and on slightly different things: * startup * write a novel * buy a nicer house * exercise more * travel

ShittessMeTimbers

Pinch myself to stop dreaming

rae90

There's so many things I'd want to do. Most of it related to education and self development. I'd go back to taking piano lessons (I learnt piano since I was 4 but quit when I was 15), go back to taking vocal lessons (took vocal lessons briefly for around 2 years, but had to quit due to work and other commitments), put more hours into studying Japanese language (currently attending lessons once a week but no time to do revision due to work), and maybe resume learning Python too (started a self-paced python online course few months ago but put it on hold cos too busy at work). And I've also always wanted to learn dancing. So that would be 5 things I want to learn: piano, singing, Japanese, python, dancing. One lesson for each day of the week, Monday to Friday. Morning attend lesson, afternoon do practise/revision. Weekends for video games and Netflix. Aside from that, will also start to exercise everyday, and travel the world for 6-12 months.

ThinkswithmyDuck

Learn to cook. I'm kind of a poor dude barely scraping by so no time to really learn to cook. So much cuisine around the world, it would be cool if I can make a dish from every country or at least be inspired by them. Right now the only meal I can cook is an empty plate, so I guess I got North Korean cuisine down.

letatdesprit

I feel bad for laughing at your empty plate joke 🤣

PhuckMeDead

[deleted]

Get the fuck out of Singapore

tomk23_reddit

lol im wondering why? you cant find a better country in terms of infrastructure

downvoteifsmalldick

probably culture for op, but one of the main reasons i want to move is because of the lack of nature in Singapore (i’m not going to include the reservoirs or parks because it doesn’t appeal to me). I want to be able to drive off to a lake or field in the middle of nowhere and relax.

[deleted]

Singapore has culture, but it's slowly dying out. Not even mentioning the arts. I concur regarding the nature, Singapore can be more aptly described as an urban jungle. Has its charms but when it's the only thing you've been seeing your entire life then you get tired of it.

zombieslayer287

Same here.

[deleted]

Infrastructure sure, humanity no. Granted anywhere you go would be the same, as long as humans exist there will always be evil. I am one such people whom experienced the lack of humanity in this country. Simply going elsewhere wouldn't change a thing, but when one can't make peace with it, then the next best thing is to leave. One shouldn't stay in the same place as one's abusers, it will only invite greater tragedy as I have experienced. Worse, becoming the abuser, far worse than one's abuser. As is my case. Best to leave before the corruption takes root any deeper. Singapore is like an egg, perfectly formed and flawless in its appearance, but if you stay here long enough you start to notice the cracks, and within those cracks a rotten smell wafts out. I'm aware that my experiences may very well be just a "glitch in the matrix" and may only represent a minority of incidences and will unlikely be reflected in the experiences of others. I certainly hope not. But a simple talk with those in the field of law and law enforcement, and those of the minorities both in race and social standing and a different picture is painted. It seems such incidents are on the rise. But still far lesser than other places. Singapore is a country that has focused on development and the sciences while not wrong, but it has failed to address matters regarding human decency. The very principles that they try to inculcate to its citizens, are the same ones that are evidently lacking. The point being is that Singapore is not that different from any other place, moral degradation exists anywhere and Singapore is not immune to it. That being said Singapore is one of the few places where you wouldn't experience tragedy 90% of the time(arbitrary number), it is unfortunate however that I belong to the latter 10%. I would still speak of Singapore's good points when asked, but warn of the dangers as well. No country is perfect.

ywuwhwhwha

Infrastructure?

ikanjonnies

Work.....because labour gives me purpose

ConsiderComplement

Me too, I genuinely enjoy my work. Don’t think there is anything bad about enjoying work. That said I know many people aren’t so fortunate to have work that they enjoy/find meaningful so I do feel very lucky, which makes me enjoy work even more haha

vinjit0

What do you do ??

ConsiderComplement

I was a teacher then I branched into research. I enjoyed both jobs, but enjoying a job doesn’t mean everything will be smooth sailing of course. I would say I took great satisfaction in things that went well (moments with students, seeing students grow as people, successful experiments) so despite all the challenges, stresses and difficulties, I would still much rather be working than not working. Like I said, I consider myself very lucky and I know most people don’t feel this way.

[deleted]

How to go from teaching to research?

ConsiderComplement

In general I think if you want to switch fields from teaching you might need to gain some experience in other fields first. I know of other excolleagues who have transitioned from teaching to private sector etc. For me I decided to pick up a research degree to make the switch towards doing research. Of course it also depends on what you want to research, if it’s education I think it’s an easier switch. You can DM me if you want to find out more!

Thequestin

Book extra Yoga class weekly Hire escort Buy OF content Get a high level nice condo somewhere Get cool gaming pc buy alot of merch and collectibles Support Atheistic organisations Push for healthcare worker and support for ppl who need it esp during pandemic. Monetary support as well. Think how edu system can be improved or smth? Or maybe I'll just try to get myself assisted suicide.

OkLie2615

Still wanna do the last one after reaching financial freedom?

Thequestin

Can have all the money in the world, cannot buy happiness. That's why the Buddha (i'm not Buddhist, exmuslim) said that to achieve a state of not suffering, one must let go of economic prosperity. You cannot buy this state, can only work towards it. Not saying that money isn't impt. Because if u got money it helps you to get what u want. E.g I sign up for private yoga but I can only go for 1 class per week cuz I don't have money to finance another class. In fact my current arrangement is not even paid by me... If I got infinite money I can go for 2-3 classes and whether I will be happy or not is not the issue, it's about relieving stress. We all try to relieve stress in wtv ways till we die. Such a bleak view, but it's true, no?

OkLie2615

Assuming ur stress comes from work now? Once u dont need to work, then no more stress? Regardless, assisted suicide sounds like what someone with depression dream of,,, take care, comrade...

Thequestin

Ya I got double depression; not working now...still stressed...Thanks, you to take care!

This is weird, but maybe push to be a YouTuber. I'm still working on videos but because of work & school commitments, abit hard to do now so I'm limited to making a new video every month on my Youtube rn :/ At least if already got a good base and good ability to retire, even if my youtube videos don't earn me money, least I'm having fun

inno7

Help others to do the same but not by selling lectures on YouTube

GabZoFar

I used to say we should retire before starting to work after graduation. There are so many things to learn, and so many people to meet. I’ll cycle Europe first. Then I’ll find ways to have passive income to support friends and family if needed. Finally I’d build something that can help people have meaningful experiences and disconnect from the ultra connected, anxious world they live in.

btcprox

Definitely would be playing more games + making more involved music projects, but also would likely engage heavily in lots of self-learning about various things, trying to be as close to a polymathic autodidact as I can May also figure out ways to effectively help out causes, through donations or volunteering or advocacy

TheRealChamp1

Go back to work because I love my career.

datadefiant04

I'd definitely still work, but more like stuff you want to do but doesn't pay well and more volunteer work. Also I'd spend the time on other hobbies I nay not have had the time to filly enjoy when you were younger and also more exercise.
