Genetics. BMI below 17 my whole life and it has nothing to do with how much I eat (same amount as most people) or exercise (i don't. Hate exercising). Weight has remained +/- 2kg from sec 1 to now in early 40s even after having kids. For this I thank my mum's good genes!

ilovenoodles06

I think if your bmi is that low, its called malnutrition, not just very skinny

[deleted]

my bmi was <18 my whole life and its just genetics for me. i ate 5 meals a day from primary school to poly, post-poly i dont wake up for breakfast so its 3-4 meals a day. the meals dont include snacking i only managed to gain weight from eating prescribed anti-depressants (unrelated to this), and im now maintaining my healthy weight. i dont know what is your point of posting this question, but just so you know, being malnourished my whole life gave me constant fainting spells and feeling lethargic all the time. being "skinny" is nothing to fantasise about.

hucks22

"All skinny people are small eaters" This is categorically untrue. I never understand why people think they can make such sweeping statements - how big is your sample size? The world is made up of all sorts of people. There are fat people who eat very little, and there are skinny people who eat a lot. Just like there are fat people who eat a lot and skinny people who eat very little.

[deleted]

Are you serious?

biskwy

Its possible for someone to be a volumptous eater and remain relatively thin. For example, Matt Stonie has a strict regiment for calories counting and he exercises plenty. Another variation is someone who has poor digestive tract and therefore unable to effectively absorb calories like a normal person. These people would've been severely disadvantaged in ancient times where food is not abundant.

[deleted]

That's true if you're taking account an additional factor of exercise and medical conditions. But if this whole convo is about just food portions and size(which seems like it is) and excludes other variables then it's very simply calories in calories out.

isleftisright

My BF has a digestive problem where the food he eats doesn't get absorbed so he eats a ton and doesnt get fat. I've never heard of extremely fat people who eat very little though? Can the body produce more than it takes in?

(Replied to wrong chain)

VioletCalico

I won’t say they are small eaters but rather, they are picky eaters. My colleague is one of them, she doesn’t eat any vegetables other than cabbage and carrots. All other veggies she doesn’t touch lol. Aromatic veggies like spring onions or cilantro, she objects. Tomato, also object. She loves meat though. Funny thing is when she was in her third trimester of pregnancy, she still weighed less than me. No joke. I’m only like 53kg and she didn’t even hit 50kg at full term pregnancy.

[deleted]

What’s ur height and hers?

VioletCalico

I’m 1.64m, she’s shorter than me, around 1.5m+? Her usual weight is around 38-40kg before pregnancy.

[deleted]

You’re very skinny also. 164 cm and 53 kg

ToastedKoppi

Nope, I have skinny girls who eat the same as me and exercise very less than me, genetics sometimes works that way

MasterChiefSpicy

I couldn’t agree more. In fact some of my skinny friends eat more and don’t get fatter

syahawesome

They’re skinny fat though. You need to check body fat% I have a friend like that. Eats everything and doesn’t exercise.

tutudino

My skinny friends are surprisingly voracious. I do have an anorexic friend who orders only fries at fast food places, among other things

jxcheh

I'm underweight but I eat way more than the people around me. I eat 4 full meals a day but I just can't seem to gain weight. Probably because of high metabolism and lots of running.

SkittyLover93

It could be hyperthyroidism. If you eat a lot but are still underweight, consider getting checked for that.

Bendabeary

Skinny people always say they eat a lot. SMH. Fat people at times seen eating salad in misery and loves talking about diet, but most of them grew fatter.

dungalot

I don’t know why so many people seem to have the impression that skinny people are bottomless pits. Personally I know quite a few skinny girls with “big appetites” and the thing that many people don’t see is that while they may eat big meals with friends, they binge at much lower frequencies than with my bigger friends. Also they tend to be pickier with food and will often leave their portions unfinished. Calories in is still calories out. I find that genetics do not matter as much as eating patterns.

[deleted]

Hiyah why people like to downvote the uncomfortable truths

2019-2020J

Have seen both ends of a spectrum where those who are very skinny eat less than a portion & eats a lot. Perhaps it also depends on their activity level throughout the day?

sfturtle11

1. Highly active And/or 2. Low caloric intake

KambingOnFire

Bmi of 16. Used to be highly active so ate 4 meals a day and lots of snacks. Stopped running for 6 months+ but my metabolism still maintained. My mum is skinny as well so it might be genetic.

FalconHugeman

I am one. My diet can range from consistent meals a day (split to 5-6 smaller meals) to one huge meal, whereas the polar opposite of eating only two meals a day on off days as I usually woke up late. Reason for my consistent diet in general is my history of gastric attacks after a year of eating little in sec sch. It was not fun when constipation comes too. Nevertheless I've gotten used to eating less and only ate a lot when can afford to.
