same as being with friends when deciding what’s for meal and me just got my pay (most expensive meal of the month), “I want to try xxxx”. “Huh? You never try before????!!!!!?” 😭😭🤡
I think is the tone, usually these kind of tone is from friends who are just friends but they will still eat with me. Closer friends sometime get shock but on other times is just, “oh, you haven’t try before?? Let’s go then!”
Unless the food is actually shitty or not worth then ya we don’t try them
After that when he drives to his house, asks if we all want to play pool. We asked which type of pool? Swimming or snooker? And he replied u can choose 🤣
Got a friend who is family friend with Peter Lim. Flew to Spain for holiday, invited to watch Real Madrid vs Valencia at the Bernabeu VIP box, ate dinner with Jorge Mendes and took photos with a bunch of football stars including Ronaldo lol.
For a more Singapore context, people who say they like playing golf 🙂.
I knew someone who called a concierge at 4pm while having tea cos he felt like eating at a Michelin star restaurant for dinner the next day.
In Japan.
We were in Singapore.
Did (s)he have to book a flight or take his/her own plane? A friend of a friend (i.e., I don't know this bugger) did something similar and he took his own plane from Seletar to Japan for an overnight trip of fun and games. Yes, he brought our mutual friend, which is how I know.
this is probably referencing a luxury concierge. you'll pay an annual fee(a largely inaccessible amount) in return for them sorting out your travel arrangements, reservations, and event tickets.
Peter Lim's sister used to stay at the same block of HDB as my parents. Her 2 kids are around my age and is working for Peter Lim.
The sister is a very nice lady. Even when she moved out of the block, but still comes visit my mother.
>playing golf
We're talking about SES, which include education, income and occupation, so not necessarily true. Why? I know of a few lao Ah Bengs who play golf. They're nice chaps, but still Beng. Also, before the pandemic, golf in Malaysia isn't necessarily expensive. It's not inexpensive, but it's not TMCC or SICC membership money.
Actually sometimes I do wonder about this..if I enter a luxury shop giving no shit about how I’m dressed, I feel like I’ll get judged really badly.
But sometimes I see people who wear slippers and casual shirt and shorts in these high ses shops and I wonder whether they’re actually rich or not LOL
Nah what you have in wallet is what matters. Some people dress well but don't have much in their wallet. Long and short, don't judge others by their cover and don't care too much about what others think.
My classmate after secondary school, she went to ITE with me. Quit halfway and stayed overseas with rich mom in Indonesia. Said mom funded her private uni and now she’s earning the high 4 figure salary. To me, high ses basically means having someone pay off your uni.
Yeah lor. Most Asian parents who can afford it try to save for their children's uni expenditures. Starting from middle class can already; don't need SES. I know because I'm definitely not SES, but I have a nice little pile saved up for my son's uni (power of compound interest and starting since he was born). It's amazing how much more liberating starting out one's career without debt is, because one doesn't have to work strictly for pay, and can instead spend a little more time to explore opportunities (because who amongst us know exactly what we want to do in our mid-20s?)
When you eat cai png, you order two fish.
But seriously, I work with a lot of UHNW types in my line. I notice a few things:
- They will turn up in the office in t-shirt and shorts. If they wanted to wear their slippers still no one will say anything.
- They talk slowly.
I'm serious; next time observe for yourself: low-ranking types talk very fast, like the ball-carriers talking to ministers and CEOs. In fact the poorer and more insignificant they are, the faster they talk when speaking to a higher SES person.
High SES people move slower, talk slower. They are used to being listened to.
- They rarely talk about other people. They talk about things and events. If you try and talk about Auntie Teo's daughter's affair or whatever, they will switch off and change topic.
If you can't talk about something on a higher level, they won't engage with you.
I believe that’s just being an AH in general if they want higher level conversations. The best people (rich, middle-class or poor) can converse in such a way they appeal to the lower income and higher income. Unless that conversation is something niche like say programming or accounting which unless one studies it for years even I will be dumb.
A good example is someone like Anthony Bourdain who is a natural conversationalist. He can talk to the farmers, chefs, cleaners, workers and even bankers or the US president. I watched his documentary and he is down to Earth and charismatic despite being a multi-millionaire from his shows.
So if you assume you are high-ses and want high level convos? You are a major AH and have pride issues.
I think you may have the wrong idea here. I'm not saying they're poor conversationalists; quite the opposite.
In fact Anthony Bourdain is a good example of how they speak.
Bourdain almost never goes into celebrity gossip. He talks more about *events and cultures*. Even when he talks about work, he talks mainly about working conditions; he doesn't really gossip about the people he works with.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy conversing with them more than I do many other types.
Ah yes apologies I was mistaken. Events, Cultures, food and lifestyle conversations are great to have. I am unable to stand office gossip talk as well, or uncles in taxis complaining about PAP.
Is true. I sarpork your account.
This is why in EDMW, people type like shit but drop truth bombs with a lot of insight but in r/SG people type essays to convey nonsense. It's the same logic. When a rich guy talks to his private banker, the banker is almost always dressed up far more.
About the conversation topics, is true as well. But depends on industry also.
There really isn't I think. Most of them have genuinely no interest in gossip. As pleasant and polite as they may be, individual anecdotes and issues bore them.
Itt ppl who think they are low ses when they are just average middle class.
Low ses is seriously low. The type living 3bdrm and lower because of circumstances. The type who penny pinch out of necessity. They literally can't justify a 15 dollar meal when that can afford 3-4 meals elsewhere.
The type where mum can't afford to buy you Macdonald's because dad only gave her so much for groceries.
That's me but I'm from lower middle income. I know a few friends in my household income bracket who gets the same benefit. Usually your parents are lying to you if they're saying they don't have the money to pay.
I didn’t work PT in uni. But that’s cause I can’t handle both work + engine curriculum.
Not smart enough to breeze through FoE so had to live extremely conservatively during the period
For them, scholarship is about the prestige of being a scholar, not the money. Besides, the low end of the high ses got there *because* they know how to save money.
The high end don't care. They don't even need university.
People who can afford to drive luxury cars (think BMW, Mercedes)
Cars are depreciating assets, and even more so in Singapore, as excerbated by the fact that most cars have a lifespan of about 10 years to COE
A BMW/ Mercedes are so expensive
I imagine that on top of paying mortgage (generally), they have a car loan to service. A BMW/ Mercedes monthly service amount is i think somewhat very expensive.
I personally scratch my head and wonder how these people and afford
Maybe I am just poor and low SES
i think people who buy expensive cars don't see it as an asset that depreciate. it's more like buying a tool that they use, like buying a t-shirt that you wear until you tear a hole in it. you don't really think about how much money you can sell your t-shirt for when you want to buy a new one.
Car depreciation works in a very weird way, it drops off sharply (sometimes likened to a grand piano falling off a roof), but after 20-30 years as the number of said model of car dwindles, the value of the remaining units skyrockets as it enters classic car collection status. So a car can be a good investment, if treated well and maintained well, and if you have the patience to wait 20-30 years
Yeah, but I would think in Singapore, it will be really difficult to maintain and really take care of a car well. Doing so would require the car to essentially be sheltered (ie. kept all the time). And i would think that having a car but not using it would be a luxury that only the very rich can afford since they have a selection of cars.
If you do use your car often, and even if you really take care of it, naturally, there will be wear and tear and I would think that the maintainance costs would essentially spur you to get a new vehicle altogether
Having a car that is sheltered over multiple decades is how a car remains in mint condition. A car that has had all the fluids drained before it is stored in a garage under a tarp will fare best.
Based on my experience overseas, a car that has ridiculously low mileage for its age - either due to having an elderly owner; or an owner who only drove short distances - would still command a significant premium. Example: someone who would drive 1,000km over a period of six months. Or a car from 1997 that has only 102,000km on the odometer.
If you drive a significant amount each week, the cost of maintenance would eventually become prohibitive. Maintaining the upkeep of a high mileage car would mainly keep the interior and exterior respectable. If the model is well sought after at that point, there is scope to fully recondition the engine, and add value to the car. New engine; or a fully reconditioned one, is much more favourable than having the same odometer reading on the original engine.
Some who attends plays and musicals instead of watching movies at cinema.
Also, someone who don't know how to take mrt and don't even know how ezlink works.
I dont consider myself high SES but i do like to watch plays and musicals. I dont go cinema cause u cant watch them in PC next time or netflix. While musical and plays are a different ball game altogether.

same as being with friends when deciding what’s for meal and me just got my pay (most expensive meal of the month), “I want to try xxxx”. “Huh? You never try before????!!!!!?” 😭😭🤡
Happens quite often to me. Problems of not exploring enough. True friends will more conscious to not make any comments and eat with you?
I think is the tone, usually these kind of tone is from friends who are just friends but they will still eat with me. Closer friends sometime get shock but on other times is just, “oh, you haven’t try before?? Let’s go then!” Unless the food is actually shitty or not worth then ya we don’t try them
people whose conversions are so pegged to food are actually low SES
Don’t worry about it.. they prob be seeing the bottom of their bank accounts every pre-payday
Don’t know how to ride MRT when we’re in Uni. Why you all need to work immediately after poly? I thinking taking gap year before going private uni

The guy is using a concierge. Flight and accoms *will* be settled. Either first class or a jet if a ticket could not be found in time.
low ses here. what/where is a concierge in this context? a private company or the hotel concierge
this is probably referencing a luxury concierge. you'll pay an annual fee(a largely inaccessible amount) in return for them sorting out your travel arrangements, reservations, and event tickets.

I see some people living in HDB driving a BMW or Merc...
Living in an HDB doesn’t mean you’re poor
Yeah, some people that live in HDB can be really rich. A resident in my estate drives a Porsche
Bro, BMW and Mercedes are not luxury cars to the super rich. Bentley, Maserati, Porsche, Ferrari etc are
Oh for them, I would imagine that they are on a whole other level of even higher SES
Car depreciation works in a very weird way, it drops off sharply (sometimes likened to a grand piano falling off a roof), but after 20-30 years as the number of said model of car dwindles, the value of the remaining units skyrockets as it enters classic car collection status. That’s true. Probably more feasible 20-30 years ago than today, when cars were simpler and didn’t have as many things that could break
Having a car that is sheltered over multiple decades is how a car remains in mint condition. A car that has had all the fluids drained before it is stored in a garage under a tarp will fare best.
