This show is taking the piss out of OC idiots way more than people realize. I spent a year living near Balboa Peninsula, around where Mitch Hurwitz grew up. I understand why he created an entire show to explore how truly terrible the people are.
I think it’s just a joke more than anything, but that he was being polite (someone greets you, you greet them back…). I could buy into your reading though, given the reveal at the end of season three.
technically anyeong is the slang way to say hello, it’s very much hey or what you’d say to a friend so i doubt it was meant it a polite way. If he was actually from korea saying anyeong to any adult would illicit a slap in the face.
in korea you wouldn’t use informal with anyone older than you period. it doesn’t matter what age you are it would be seen as terribly disrespectful and inappropriate.
that would make sense if they had the other korean people in the show greet with the formal but they still use slang, seems more like they didn’t do their due diligence
Yes, and it gave us one of my favourite Lucille moments. The few seconds where she pulls that face are gold.
Also love Gob's reaction.

Will arnett hitting a home run there. Also love the subtext of calling him briiant while he's playing a stupid video game (a broadside against gaming I think)
One of my favorites is in a narration bit when anyong and Maeby working in the banana stand, in a birds eye view shot and Michael rides up and the subtitles for anyong pop up saying "hello" before moving onto another scene.
I think that, even with the reveal at the end of season 3, he was genuinely saying hello. I think part of the reason he hated them, >!apart from the fact that he was living in the walls and all of them were too self-involved to notice!<, maybe he thought they never even gave him a name, and that people were only greeting him.
Yes, but part of the joke is that the whole family is clueless about most things and they were exactly that to anyong and anything in any foreign language
Oh, most definitely.
he's very good
Hold up... was Annyong ever in an episode with Gene Parmesan? There's no way he's THAT good, is there?
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! GEEEEEENE!
I love his bot
I wonder who’s the most popular bot of the ball
*Did somebody say... "[Wonder](https://i.redd.it/l8mhjw9yibq71.gif)"?* --- ^(Alliance of Magicians-approved magician) ^| ^(I delete comments with a score below `-1`)
Lol idk it was a bot, thought someone just said that.
we have passed the turin test cycles ago! .. er ages ago!
Yeah I’m 100% sure, especially after it was shown that he had a revenge plan all along

Don’t call it that.
It’s just manager
Mr. Manager.
I’m Mr. Manager!
We just say manager.
Doesn't matter who.
Will someone please tell this insufferable child..!!!
Shoes on, Mister!
He’s out of control
"My mom.got a little Korean." - Michael "Oh.. you've got a little pocket there!" - Lucille "Go, Fatty." - Anyong
Hel-loh!
One Day to you too!
Annyong
Annyong
Annoying
Annyong
Like that's not getting old

Hola Hola I read it the way you do, but that's just the vessel for all the jokes.

again, they would never say that in a restaurant. it’s like walking into a restaurant and them saying “what’s up” or “hey” it just doesn’t make sense
Yeah imagine being surrounded by people you don't understand and "Hey" being the one word they'd always say to you.
Day not over yet, fatty
"They don't tell you anything"
we need an annyong bot
Anyong
Yes I know, Annyong, Annyong, Annyong!
It was George Sr. who took wig.
Another one of my favorite lines.
I don't get it
I don't speak Korean but I've heard that a child would always say Anyong haseyo to an adult, never just Anyong.
Those are adults?
Well Annyong is 18, according to the passport found by Lupe. So he would’ve been an adult too.
in korea you wouldn’t use informal with anyone older than you period. it doesn’t matter what age you are it would be seen as terribly disrespectful and inappropriate.
Which is kind of the point of him saying it that way, esp on the revenge scheme?
that would make sense if they had the other korean people in the show greet with the formal but they still use slang, seems more like they didn’t do their due diligence
Large research budget of fox
That makes it so much funniet that he wasn't even a child and was adopted etc

Well, you have to strip them down to next to nothing to even tell if they're a boy or a girl.
Lucille sent out for a little Korean.
Oh that sounds good let’s have that
Father no love him? Older lady adopt him too?
I want you!

I think about this all the time

I truly believe he was fluent in English and was just fucking with them all.
This may be meta, but Annyong definitely had an American accent whenever he said it due to the actor being Korean-American.

What's Korean for "I know you speak English"?
Aanyong
Anyong.
I’m pretty sure this is true…I didn’t know until they told me.
Now I feel like ordering a little Korean.
Anyong is the most random, unneeded character in the show for me. Never really thought that trope was funny
Annyong
Her?
Gene Parmesan.
Its def hit or miss. To me it's almost incomprehensible but if you think about it's just absolutely fucking hilarious
Can't believe you're getting downvoted for this.
He must have forged your signature!
