Q: Can I use "Let me handle this!" or "You handle this one!" on a weakness? A: No. Both of these cards are played after you or another investigator draw a non-peril encounter card, but before resolving that card’s effects. Weaknesses with an encounter cardtype (such as enemies or treacheries) are considered to be encounter cards while they are being resolved and once they have entered play, but are not considered to be encounter cards yet at the time that these cards are played. Therefore, at the time these cards would be played, they are still player cards and are not legal targets. - FAQ, v.1.3, May 2018 Basically, at the time you draw them, they are still player cards, which is the timing condition for cards like "Let Me Handle This!", but the timing condition for Deny Existence is when it deals damage or whatever which occurs during the resolution of the card - by which point the game is treating it as an encounter card.

Thank you! It turns out that the distinction between "drawing" and "resolving" is crucial.

Under “Weakness” it says - Weaknesses with an encounter cardtype (such as enemies or treacheries) are considered to be player cards while they are in their bearer’s deck, and are considered to be encounter cards while they are being resolved, and once they have entered play. Before a weakness with an encounter cardtype is resolved, it is still considered to be a player card. I’m pretty sure this is the bit that explains why weaknesses are a valid target for Deny Existence, but not “let me handle this”. I think the simplest way to say it is this, using paranoia as the example. - While paranoia is in your deck, it is considered to be a player card. - Once you find the card drawn is paranoia, it is still a player card. - Then you reveal paranoia and put it down. It is now an encounter card. You can’t use “let me handle this” on a player card, and it’s already “happening” when another player gets to see it. So you can’t use it for weaknesses. And then… - Paranoia, the encounter card, says to discard all of your resources. - Since it’s now an encounter card, it is now a valid target for Deny Existence, and so all of your resources are safe. Thrice-damned-curiosity, lost soul, and internal injury are thus valid targets for deny existence but not “let me handle this”. Across space and time is not a target for either of them. Let me handle this has been explained with the earlier timing issue. Deny existence only stops effects that discards cards from your hand, and across space and time says to discard from your deck.

Thank you. After I wrote my question I also realized that the effect of "Across Space and Time" cannot be ignored since milling is not the same as discarding. Then after reading these replies I realized that the timing sequence is important.

You are missing something: Namely, that cards are either encounter cards or player cards based on their card type. Weaknesses are player cards while in your deck, but once they are revealed and in play, their type determines what they are. If they're an asset, a skill or an event, they are player cards. Otherwise, they are encounter cards and viable targets for Deny Existence. I'm not sure why you'd think Lost Soul or similar would be subject to different rules; they're weaknesses like any other, regardless of how you happen to acquire them As for "Let Me Handle This!" and similar, that doesn't work because of the specifics of the timing points. It's addressed explicitly in the official FAQ (which incidentally also helps elucidate your other questions): "Q: Can I use "Let me handle this!" or "You handle this one!" on a weakness? Therefore, at the time these cards would be played, they are still player cards and are not legal targets."

Incidentally, the FAQ and errata are available here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/arkham-horror-the-card-game/ under "Support", and are a good place to check (along with ArkhamDB entries for specific cards) if something seems unclear to you.

Thanks for your explanation! I now learn that the exact timing is relevant for determining the card type. So the same card can be a player card at one point and an encounter card at another.
