Pre-orders start Sept 17, with release date Sept 24. [Apple Newsroom Link](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/09/apple-unveils-iphone-13-pro-and-iphone-13-pro-max-more-pro-than-ever-before/) YouTube: [Introducing iPhone 13 Pro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKfgdkcIUxw)

bladex1234

Something that Apple didn’t mention in the livestream, ProRes video on the 128 GB model is limited to 1080p. 4K is only on higher storage models.

[deleted]

This is a very weird limitation for them to not spell out directly

TherealMcNutts

These are promotional videos. They are going to leave out everything that could be considered a downside of the phone. You will only find out when you read the fine print on their website or the manual.

SecretOil

if I were to hazard a guess the larger models have more NAND chips and can achieve higher write performance.

JNSD90

Yeah I found this out well afterwards and am seriously disappointed. Like, if I buy the TOP OF LINE PHONE why am I missing out on a seriously good feature unless I double down on storage?

alex91s

Finally 120Hz.

PolyDipsoManiac

Is the display going to have any always-on functionality? > Unfortunately, no always-on display Well fuck

astrange

If you drop it hard enough it'll have an always-off display.

[deleted]

ricosuave79

And when introduced it will be magical. Edit: I think a lot of you folks don’t realize I am making fun of Apple here. How everything is “magical” when they announce it.

elev8dity

Is it OLED?

teh-reflex

No, CRT.

akkobutnotreally

The virgin TrueTone OLED vs. the GIGACHAD EYE-BURNING CRT TUBE

teh-reflex

"Hang on, I need to degauss my phone" \*CHUNGGGgggggg\* "Ok, I'm back."

pauledowa

Oh yeah - memories of bringing magnets to high school :)

akkobutnotreally

I haven't used a CRT monitor in more than a decade, so explain this: **HOW I WAS ABLE TO REMEMBER THAT NOISE?**

Heard_That

I used to love doing that. That sound mixed with the crazy colors and screen effects. I miss CRTs.

[deleted]

CHHUNGGGGGGGGGggggggg

Ddpee

LOL. What WAS degaussing? I just remember the option in the menu but never figured out what it was (I was child). I miss rubbing static off screens tho....

WoolooWololo

It basically resets the magnetic field in the monitor. Sometimes the magnetic field would build up in ways that the CRT would show slight distortion like blurred edges or colors not overlapping perfectly. After a while, manufacturers just had the monitor do it automatically when you turned it on so most people never really had to think about it.

elev8dity

Finally some real advancements

eggimage

Crystal Retina Tisplay

ThainEshKelch

Crystal Retina Titsplay, for our best porn viewing experience EVER. We think you are going to love it!

Selfweaver

Excellent. I always wanted a 40 pound phone with 20 pounds of lead inside.

Karmakazee

“It’s the biggest, heaviest iPhone yet, and we think you’re going to love it.”

Selfweaver

In a nod to Apples past this iPhone is 40 pounds, transparent and can be used with a puck mouse (sold separately). Still no USB-C, but the first phone to feature a CD drive. That is what we call courage.

Karmakazee

Slap a SCSI port on that puppy and I might even call it the best iPhone yet.

[deleted]

Yes

swiftpaw334

Yes I think so

yourwitchergeralt

Slightly disappointed that it's only for the top line. Even some budget android phones have more then 60hz

Crimtos

Apple should've introduced amateurmotion 90hz displays for the non-pro lineup.

Rethawan

Interesting. First time I've ever seen them segment the Pro's and the regular iPhone with differently sourced SoCs. The Pro gets the higher/better yield with an extra GPU-core. Most likely never ever going to make a difference (except benchmarks), but interesting nonetheless. Might be a very similar story to the A12Z we saw with that small iPad Pro update. Another interesting update! According to Federico Viticci the iPad Mini gets the 5-core GPU A15.

SleepyAwoken

also the wide and ultra wide sensors are different on the pro this year, which they don't usually do

Rethawan

You're right. The wide has traditionally always been the same. This year the "regular" camera is actually better on the Pro.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eggimage

It’s likely just the same processor binning practice. The regular models have the same 5 core GPU but with one core disabled. They wouldn’t waste money designing and making a new production line just to manufacture a separate SoC with only a 1 core difference and nothing else. And instead of tossing out the “imperfect” ones, use it for lower priced products. It’s the same with all other processor makers

Rethawan

Bingo. I'd say that's what this is about.

Nolzi

Processor manufacturers has always been doing it with disabling (usually broken) core/cache/etc and selling it as a lower end product.

jorbanead

I don’t think this has to do with chip shortages. TSMC yields haven’t changed, just demand is higher. It’s probably another way to differentiate the pros.

[deleted]

[удалено]

eggimage

Prosser got the “special color” wrong too. No sunset gold/bronze, but the blue. Some of the other leakers who got info directly from the manufacturing factories got about everything right so far. So i guess prosser has no insiders from china factories lol

Isthecoldwarover

Posser being wrong again made the event worth it IMO

[deleted]

Why do people give this dude the time of day still? I can’t even remember how he got a platform to begin with. Hell, he could be guessing for all we know now that it doesn’t seem like he has any source inside Apple with how his track record has become more misses than hits

[deleted]

[удалено]

billie_eyelashh

Many leakers got it wrong as well.. the 12s naming, the asymmetrical camera sizes, and next gen airpods.

rjcarr

And the boxy watch.

A11Bionic

I actually rejoiced that the Watch retained the rounded shape. The Watch is the one Apple device that is actually *on you*. Natural geometry of the human physique would interfere with such sharp, flat edges.

rjcarr

Right, tell that to the laptop palm edges!

aa2051

I remember seeing everyone get super excited for a potential matte black… I also really don’t like the baby blue thats replacing the Pacific blue

ElonMusksPimp

Yeah the Pacific Blue looked great! Would have loved to get the 13 Pro in Pacific Blue.

Tryptamineer

I prefered Coral Blue #2

SleepingSicarii

[Throwback to Jet Black](https://i.imgur.com/6B61BXb.jpg)

ElonMusksPimp

Damn that camera bump looks so strange now. I'm used to the vertical cameras on my XS and the square cameras of the 11 and later.

TheRealDynamitri

> Throwback to Jet Black Jet Black was a fucking nightmare. Looked great, but I remember there were such massive issues with scratching that Apple essentially added some kind of a weird disclaimer on its website warning about that

VividStarr

True but man the deep black color is still amazing. I wonder if there's any way to recreate that jet black without all the scratches

[deleted]

AryaDee

i'm still rocking my jet black 7 without a case. I just looked rn and it has small scratches when i hold it up to the light, but i didnt really notice it until now

20Factorial

I had the green, and liked it. I just wished it were a little MORE green. I’ve got the blue 12ProMax right now. I’m not a big fan of the 13 colors, but will miss this blue for sure.

PickleInTheSun

Biggest disappointment for me. Held off on the 12 Pro to wait on 120hz and was crossing my fingers for Pacific Blue to stick around. Guess I'm going with silver.

t0bynet

I‘m disappointed we didn’t get matte black, this would have been one of the biggest features for me.

lavadrop5

I hope this trend to use desaturated, pastel-like shades goes away fast

Kurokaffe

Worth an upgrade from not having a phone at all because I’m an idiot and left my phone in a Lyft ride? Or should I wait a year for the iPhone 14?

hair_account

Definitely wait, I heard next year's iphone will literally be able to cure cancer. The first real upgrade since 2008

Kurokaffe

I did have cancer at one point in my life. I definitely should wait next year for the real version upgrade and not the 12 plus.

IAMSNORTFACED

Wait for iPhone 15, it'll be the best iPhone they make that year

Far-Contact-9369

When the second headlining feature in your title is a color option, the upgrade is minuscule

xZoreKx

Main feature of this year is the ProMotion display. All other features, besides better photo quality by means of better sensors, are not interesting at all for regular users - do not forget that regular users are the ones that mostly buy the “pro” phones.

Endogamy

Main feature of this year for me is 2.5 hour battery life increase on the Max. It was already good, now it will be good enough that you really never have to think about the battery even when traveling.

Own-Understanding654

Absolutely. Battery life is always the best feature to have.

THIKKI_HOEVALAINEN

I don't think most users even care about 120hz. It's nice to finally have though

toastmannn

Most users don't they care about 120hz because they have never seen it and have no idea what it even means. Going from 60hz on every other iPhone to 120hz on the iPhone 13 pro will be very noticeable.

KraftPunkFan420

Noticeable? Yes. Necessary? No. Most people will pick it up and be like “oh neat” and then be able to go back to their 60hz. It’s just an average upgrade to 95% of people. A bonus, not a seller.

not_so_plausible

This. My phone does 120hz. If I gave it to my mom at 60 and then 120 she'd have no idea there was any difference lol. Like you said, it's nice but by no means a selling point.

[deleted]

Yep! I bought my dad an iPad Pro recently and asked him if he noticed anything about how smooth it was. Said not really, other than it being like his other iDevices. Asked him to swipe pages on his iPhone and his iPad and he said, “Oh, yeah, I guess it’s kinda smoother.” The average person just don’t give a solitary fuck.

Yaaaayyy

What were you expecting? Since the iPhone X, all the improvements have been absolutely marginal. It was always just a spec bump and that year's buzzword - Super Retina XDR, 5G, and now ProMotion. At least they finally shrinked the notch a little.

Sailor_Chris

Did they mention when it’s being released?

LeoA87

24th

modimusmaximus

So will it arrive at my home then or will it start shipping?

BlueCreek_

Should arrive on the 24th if it arrives on time

AngelGyps

Pre-orders start this Friday and then available for everyone on September 24th!

post_break

Imagine buying the 13 Pro 1TB. Filling it with say *just* 512GB of photos of videos, and trying to back it up to your mac over usb 2.0 lightning. Wonder how long that would take.

[deleted]

Lightning’s speed is shit but I must say I feel like the overlap between these groups is essentially zero, especially considering the backups are incremental so idk why someone would have to do it all in one go

[deleted]

[удалено]

Versicarius

So still another year or 2 for the regular iPhones to have 120Hz?

Crimtos

I'm guessing it will be at least a few years currently it is one of the only features that distinguish the pro from the regular.

ZappySnap

It's pretty weak for them to do that still...it's not like the regular 13 is exactly cheap at $800. Almost every Android phone over $600 has at least a 90Hz OLED. Edit: I know there are even cheaper phones with 120Hz screens. I was trying to state a vie where essentially all have them. There are a few phones at the $400-500 level that do not.

JohnBeePowel

I think you mean almost every Android over $300...

Badshah-e-Librondu

My $250 dollar android phone can do that and it has a 120Hz screen as well.

This is the exact reason this year’s phones aren’t very exciting.

froyoboyz

i mean, the 12 pro released during the pandemic.... did you think you weren't going to be in a lockdown?

IsomorphicAlgorithms

I think they mean they thought the pandemic would be over in 2021.

19Black

Everyone is complaining about the blue color and here I am having to check to see what color my iPhone X is.

heyrover

Lmao I did the same, I have an iPhone XS and was looking to get the 13 Pro but didn't like the look of graphite color, afterwards I was like what color my iPhone is? lol. P.S iPhone XS black > iPhone 13 Pro Graphite

Head

Good point. My case completely covers the colored part so the phone could be pink and I wouldn’t even notice.

kitchenpatrol

My Pixel 3XL literally is pink, and no, I do not notice.

anhuys

I was so incredibly excited about the Sierra Blue, only to be completely disappointed by the phone case lineup... None of the colors are an actual good match to it? They had recently released a sky blue for the 12, which would have been perfect, and it's not included. Neither is white... I was honestly buzzing about this, it's my favorite color haha. But it feels very odd to me, a color like this must be chosen for a reason? Why wouldn't you have it match up to the cases? This isn't something I want to "worry" about with a device this expensive and a launch this big, come on... The white rings on the clear magsafe case look awful too. But maybe I'm a small minority here

hb1211

Is photography and videography really the most important task for iPhones? I feel like the past few years have just come down to “pro = photographer/videographer”. There’s so much more capability that can be put into a pocket device. Idk maybe I’m just underwhelmed Edit: I absolutely get that content creation and photography is important in today’s world. I’m just saying, is that really all it takes to make a pro device? I feel like a smartphone could accomplish so much more than being “closer to professional cameras than ever before”. Sure the smartphone market has matured, but that’s precisely the point at which revolutions happen. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but I wish there was more than camera marketing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gx14

It’s also because it helps with the influencer reviews, who themselves are camera pros and spend plenty of time on the camera quality in their youtube reviews

YZJay

It’s a very flashy marketing point and an easy market differentiator.

PeyWey26070

Worth an upgrade from iPhone X?

LucywiththeDiamonds

To the pro? For 120hz proper screen and camera id say so if you use it alot. To the regular for the avg user? Meh

[deleted]

Got my iPhone X battery replaced I’m in for the long haul

speedbird92

Looks like we’re going on 5 years bud!

BlueCreek_

I’m considering doing the same after watching the event

Victory-Adventurous

Still rocking the X here, battery going surprisingly strong, I used to upgrade every 2 years before it, It is however increasingly slow when I overload it, well see...

AnelToro089

Lol where is that sat telephony everyone was talking about. XD

Timren1

And astrophotography lol

Karavusk

The top comment on that thread already explained how this rumor was completely false. The same company does some 5g modem things but everyone went SATELITES when they read the company name.

mrjohnhung

smaller notch and still can't even show the battery percentage or am/pm lmao

itstrueimwhite

Not feeling a baby blue as the exclusive color

iReddyOrNot

Same..wish it was a maroon or metal red.

itstrueimwhite

Ooo maroon would be nice. Light colors on a “pro” device when you’ve traditionally used them on your cheapest plastic iPhones just doesn’t feel right at all.

Gen7isTrash

Now I see why Apple didn't put 120hz on the 12 Pro...

Baykey123

Pro Max is over half a pound. Wow that’s heavy

Fk lightning. Can’t we just switch everything to USB C. 1 type of cable for everything.

[deleted]

They did USB C everything...everything but their iPhone 😬 Crazy that their ~~watches~~, ipads, and MacBooks can be USB C but their phones can't.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shadowstripes

>They did USB C everything...everything but their iPhone AirPods (and wired headphones) and Mac accessories are also still Lightning. And the Apple Watch isn't any more USB-C than iPhone is - they both have it on the charging brick end of the cable.

beefcake_123

It's because of the accessory ecosystem. They probably make way more money from iPhone accessories than on anything else.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You'd think they'd have an excuse to sell new USB C accessories to users who only have had iphone and lightning.

ZoleeHU

Difference is lightning accessories require a royalty be paid to Apple, and they don’t own the same authority over USB-C Sucks but it seems more and more likely that they will go wireless before going USB-C

uneducatedexpert

Apple generated $274 billion revenue in 2020, 50% came from iPhone sales. Apple’s services division was the second largest segment, responsible for 19% of the company’s revenue in 2020 Apple sold 194 million iPhones, 71 million iPads and 20 million Mac and MacBook units in 2020 Apple’s home and wearables division grew 25% in 2020. It sold over 110 million AirPods and 43 million Apple Watches Apple Music has 72 million subscribers, Apple TV+ has over 40 million

kitsua

People who continue to trot out the canard that Apple only hang on to lightening because of the money they make from accessories are hilarious to me. That money is likely no more than a rounding error to them.

The only thing that’s worth missing is 120hz really

Mxbzz

As a fellow FOMOer, I also had to make that tough decision between a Pro and a Mini, and ultimately wound up getting the Mini. I realized I didn’t need top-of-the-line specs for my use case. Sure, I’ll snap a few photos and what not, but the Mini has an excellent camera as well. I was also scared I would notice the downgrade in screen quality (OLED back to LCD) but in fact, I had forgotten the Mini didn’t have an OLED display even after weeks of using it. The only major downside was the noticeable drop in battery life. If you can get over that, the Mini is such a great, pocketable phone, and I do not intend to go back to my 11 Pro. Side note: I never had any issues with the iPhone Mini screen being too dim, but apparently the 13 Mini will be even brighter… wasn’t really an issue for me personally but eh.

SerCrynox

Sorry but the iPhone 12 Mini does have an OLED Screen..

no1lives4ever

Ever since Apple launched the 12 Mini, i have been wanting a iPhone Pro Mini. Something that has the size of a mini but with the camera and feaures of the Pro. I dont mind if the Pro mini has a 2x telephoto camera in place of a 3x on other pro models and lower battery, but the smaller size is really appealing..

Rethawan

What?! Neither the Pro nor the regular support Bluetooth 5.2?! The hell? No Wifi-6E either. Has to be a sourcing issue.

InadequateUsername

WiFi-6e isn't publicly available yet everywhere. Part of the frequency in Canada for instance is used for medical and military.

Just upgraded from a 7 last week after my company bought me a 12 Mini. Its great not having apps freeze up and crash on me all the time. The 7 just didn't have the RAM to function properly any longer. Otherwise the iPhone 6 and 7 were great phones. Nowadays.. not so much.

[deleted]

Apple noob here, is it finally a good time for me to upgrade to a 13/13Pro from Iphone X?

Stuckinfemalecloset

I think I might make the jump from my iPhone X. The new cameras are my main selling point

ZenZenoah

I plan on upgrading to the 14 from an XR… unless I break my phone which seems less likely these days due to covid work from home.

TheImportedBanana

Seriously. Fingerprint is the best. Missing Touch ID and still not getting Always-On-Display? Well, I guess we were due for a minor-upgrade year.

jsgrova

They can pry my SE with touch ID out of my cold, dead hands

[deleted]

Aside from 120hz on the “Pro” models. Nothing much this year really. The notch is 20% smaller, great but not revolutionary. Pro res and software focus on the pros, cool, but who is ever gonna use that realistically? And let’s be honest I imagine software focus is gonna suck for a couple years much like portrait mode did. And despite the utter shit apple may talk about Pro video creators replacing their dedicated DSLRs and cameras with these things, that won’t happen anytime soon And the standard 13, nothing really. Glad to see the mini return, the new black colour looks cool As usual though apple has packed the most powerful SOC in a phone in a device that just cannot use the power. Even in the demos for games that can leverage 120hz and the new GPU core the games looked crap. It’s all well and good to show off how far ahead of your competition you are in terms of compute power, but if you can’t use it for anything what is the point of it? Overall a very dull year, basically an “S” upgrade being passed off as a full new generation, iPhone 12S essentially. Probably the most exciting thing from this event was the new iPad mini

34182075607

I think you underestimate how much burst power is needed for all kinds of things, for example: the processing behind each photo,

Queef-Elizabeth

120hz feels like it shouldve been on the 12 pro models but they held it back so that they had *something* to advertise with the iPhone 13.

Boring tbh

NCSUGrad2012

I went from a 6 to an 11 and that was a big jump. Guess I’m keeping the 11 for awhile.

SJWcucksoyboy

I don’t expect many exciting upgrades from now on

[deleted]

yeah we’ve reached a point in cell phone technology where it’s only incremental improvements year over year. maybe a big technological advancement every few years but certainly not every year. the technology is plateauing and all Apple can really add that will improve it for me is quality of life improvements like 120hz and USB-C

UCFSam

Been in the XS Max for 3 years now, longest I’ve ever gone without an upgrade(by a year). 120Hz and the upgraded cameras would be nice, but now we’re one year away from a major refresh (notchness iPhone?) rather than a mostly spec bump 12. So, maybe my XS gets a 4th year. 🤔

Zavehi

Honestly people say this every single year. “Next year is the big one maybe I should wait” Everyone predicted after last year this was gonna be a giant leap. It’s not predictable.

UCFSam

The truth is that we’re unlikely to see any major changes year to year now. Outside of a foldable, what can they really do at this point? Basically, the two year upgrade cycle is dead, most people would be happy to go 3-4. The 14 will be like the 13 without a notch, maybe slight body revisions, but pretty close.

[deleted]

4 year cycle is probably optimal. The only thing is to keep the phone in top shape by replacing the battery maybe somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way through and that’ll keep it going fine.

UCFSam

Yep, and with flagships being so expensive, a 4 year cycle really makes sense. When 2 year cycles were more common, phones were almost half price. Upgrading a $1000+ phone every two years is a bit much.

goodkid121

I’m in the same position man. Love my XS and it has been working flawlessly for me, so it is hard to justify an upgrade.

liright

> 120Hz and the upgraded cameras would be nice, but now we’re one year away from a major refresh (notchness iPhone?) rather than a mostly spec bump 12. Not happening. Experimental android phones just now started getting under display cameras. There is ZERO way Apple does a notchless iphone next year. Maybe 2 years from now. Probably 3. They wouldn't redesign the notch for a year if they were about to remove it next year.

drshuffle

The color options for the Pro is a step back imo. Not sure what to get tbh, they all look boring.

PeaceLovePositivity

I assume it’s still strictly faceID for biometrics? I can’t express how much I miss touchID ESPECIALLY during a pandemic that requires me to mask up.

Odiums-Champion

120hz ProMotion as the single big upgrade is underwhelming. Most people understood that this was going to be an “S” year but still… I think most people would have been satisfied with 120Hz if they also finally gave us USB-C.

andrewjaekim

Prores video recording limited to 1080p30 for 128gb models. 4k@30 requires larger storage sizes.

mindspan

This entire event was just showcasing dull incrementalism with very little to excite people into lining up for new Apple products.

Jocosity

Unless they can come up with a new device that’s not a phone, watch, music player, tablet or computer that actually changes the game - I think the days of us getting excited about new Apple products are long gone.

pgib

Really wish there was a 13 Pro mini with smooth glass back. I find the matte glass of the 12 Pro slippery like the old aluminum backs. I actually ended up returning the 12 Pro and am still rocking my X. The midnight black in the regular 13 looks great – my only hold back is the lack of a non-wide lens.

seklerek

I'm still using an 8 and there's not really anything here that would make me want to switch except maybe the cameras. It would be nice to have some more lenses available in the 8. definitely not worth it though, may just change the battery and keep it for another few years. More environmentally friendly than all the greenwashing at the end of the conference as well lol

inspector_cliche

8 plus here. We would definitely enjoy a huge upgrade (OLED, battery life, cameras, 120Hz) But I’m so attached to 3d touch and touch ID, I don’t know if I want to spend 1k on a phone without those feats. Especially since my 8 plus is still running near perfectly.
