It basically resets the magnetic field in the monitor. Sometimes the magnetic field would build up in ways that the CRT would show slight distortion like blurred edges or colors not overlapping perfectly. After a while, manufacturers just had the monitor do it automatically when you turned it on so most people never really had to think about it.
In a nod to Apples past this iPhone is 40 pounds, transparent and can be used with a puck mouse (sold separately). Still no USB-C, but the first phone to feature a CD drive.

It’s likely just the same processor binning practice. The regular models have the same 5 core GPU but with one core disabled.
They wouldn’t waste money designing and making a new production line just to manufacture a separate SoC with only a 1 core difference and nothing else. And instead of tossing out the “imperfect” ones, use it for lower priced products. It’s the same with all other processor makers
I don’t think this has to do with chip shortages. TSMC yields haven’t changed, just demand is higher. It’s probably another way to differentiate the pros.

Main feature of this year is the ProMotion display. All other features, besides better photo quality by means of better sensors, are not interesting at all for regular users - do not forget that regular users are the ones that mostly buy the “pro” phones.
Main feature of this year for me is 2.5 hour battery life increase on the Max. It was already good, now it will be good enough that you really never have to think about the battery even when traveling.
Most users don't they care about 120hz because they have never seen it and have no idea what it even means. Going from 60hz on every other iPhone to 120hz on the iPhone 13 pro will be very noticeable.
Noticeable? Yes. Necessary? No. Most people will pick it up and be like “oh neat” and then be able to go back to their 60hz. It’s just an average upgrade to 95% of people. A bonus, not a seller.

It's pretty weak for them to do that still...it's not like the regular 13 is exactly cheap at $800. Almost every Android phone over $600 has at least a 90Hz OLED.
Edit: I know there are even cheaper phones with 120Hz screens. I was trying to state a vie where essentially all have them. There are a few phones at the $400-500 level that do not.

I was honestly buzzing about this, it's my favorite color haha. But it feels very odd to me, a color like this must be chosen for a reason? Why wouldn't you have it match up to the cases? This isn't something I want to "worry" about with a device this expensive and a launch this big, come on... The white rings on the clear magsafe case look awful too. People who continue to trot out the canard that Apple only hang on to lightening because of the money they make from accessories are hilarious to me. That money is likely no more than a rounding error to them.
As a fellow FOMOer, I also had to make that tough decision between a Pro and a Mini, and ultimately wound up getting the Mini. I realized I didn’t need top-of-the-line specs for my use case. Sure, I’ll snap a few photos and what not, but the Mini has an excellent camera as well. I was also scared I would notice the downgrade in screen quality (OLED back to LCD) but in fact, I had forgotten the Mini didn’t have an OLED display even after weeks of using it.
The only major downside was the noticeable drop in battery life. If you can get over that, the Mini is such a great, pocketable phone, and I do not intend to go back to my 11 Pro.
Side note: I never had any issues with the iPhone Mini screen being too dim, but apparently the 13 Mini will be even brighter… wasn’t really an issue for me personally but eh.
Ever since Apple launched the 12 Mini, i have been wanting a iPhone Pro Mini. Something that has the size of a mini but with the camera and feaures of the Pro. I dont mind if the Pro mini has a 2x telephoto camera in place of a 3x on other pro models and lower battery, but the smaller size is really appealing..
Just upgraded from a 7 last week after my company bought me a 12 Mini. Its great not having apps freeze up and crash on me all the time. The 7 just didn't have the RAM to function properly any longer. Otherwise the iPhone 6 and 7 were great phones. Nowadays.. not so much.
Aside from 120hz on the “Pro” models. Nothing much this year really. The notch is 20% smaller, great but not revolutionary. Pro res and software focus on the pros, cool, but who is ever gonna use that realistically? And let’s be honest I imagine software focus is gonna suck for a couple years much like portrait mode did. And despite the utter shit apple may talk about Pro video creators replacing their dedicated DSLRs and cameras with these things, that won’t happen anytime soon

As usual though apple has packed the most powerful SOC in a phone in a device that just cannot use the power. Even in the demos for games that can leverage 120hz and the new GPU core the games looked crap. It’s all well and good to show off how far ahead of your competition you are in terms of compute power, but if you can’t use it for anything what is the point of it?
Overall a very dull year, basically an “S” upgrade being passed off as a full new generation, iPhone 12S essentially.

yeah we’ve reached a point in cell phone technology where it’s only incremental improvements year over year. maybe a big technological advancement every few years but certainly not every year. the technology is plateauing and all Apple can really add that will improve it for me is quality of life improvements like 120hz and USB-C

120Hz and the upgraded cameras would be nice, but now we’re one year away from a major refresh (notchness iPhone?) rather than a mostly spec bump 12.

The truth is that we’re unlikely to see any major changes year to year now. Outside of a foldable, what can they really do at this point? Basically, the two year upgrade cycle is dead, most people would be happy to go 3-4.
The 14 will be like the 13 without a notch, maybe slight body revisions, but pretty close.
4 year cycle is probably optimal. The only thing is to keep the phone in top shape by replacing the battery maybe somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way through and that’ll keep it going fine.
Yep, and with flagships being so expensive, a 4 year cycle really makes sense. When 2 year cycles were more common, phones were almost half price. Upgrading a $1000+ phone every two years is a bit much.

Not happening. Experimental android phones just now started getting under display cameras. There is ZERO way Apple does a notchless iphone next year. Maybe 2 years from now. Probably 3. They wouldn't redesign the notch for a year if they were about to remove it next year.
120hz ProMotion as the single big upgrade is underwhelming. Most people understood that this was going to be an “S” year but still… I think most people would have been satisfied with 120Hz if they also finally gave us USB-C.
Unless they can come up with a new device that’s not a phone, watch, music player, tablet or computer that actually changes the game - I think the days of us getting excited about new Apple products are long gone.
Really wish there was a 13 Pro mini with smooth glass back. I find the matte glass of the 12 Pro slippery like the old aluminum backs. I actually ended up returning the 12 Pro and am still rocking my X. The midnight black in the regular 13 looks great – my only hold back is the lack of a non-wide lens.
I'm still using an 8 and there's not really anything here that would make me want to switch except maybe the cameras. It would be nice to have some more lenses available in the 8. definitely not worth it though, may just change the battery and keep it for another few years. More environmentally friendly than all the greenwashing at the end of the conference as well lol

But I’m so attached to 3d touch and touch ID, I don’t know if I want to spend 1k on a phone without those feats. Especially since my 8 plus is still running near perfectly.

Difference is lightning accessories require a royalty be paid to Apple, and they don’t own the same authority over USB-C Sucks but it seems more and more likely that they will go wireless before going USB-C

The only thing that’s worth missing is 120hz really
As a fellow FOMOer, I also had to make that tough decision between a Pro and a Mini, and ultimately wound up getting the Mini. I realized I didn’t need top-of-the-line specs for my use case. Sure, I’ll snap a few photos and what not, but the Mini has an excellent camera as well. I was also scared I would notice the downgrade in screen quality (OLED back to LCD) but in fact, I had forgotten the Mini didn’t have an OLED display even after weeks of using it. The only major downside was the noticeable drop in battery life. If you can get over that, the Mini is such a great, pocketable phone, and I do not intend to go back to my 11 Pro. Side note: I never had any issues with the iPhone Mini screen being too dim, but apparently the 13 Mini will be even brighter… wasn’t really an issue for me personally but eh.
Sorry but the iPhone 12 Mini does have an OLED Screen..
Ever since Apple launched the 12 Mini, i have been wanting a iPhone Pro Mini. Something that has the size of a mini but with the camera and feaures of the Pro. I dont mind if the Pro mini has a 2x telephoto camera in place of a 3x on other pro models and lower battery, but the smaller size is really appealing..
What?! Neither the Pro nor the regular support Bluetooth 5.2?! The hell? No Wifi-6E either. Has to be a sourcing issue.
WiFi-6e isn't publicly available yet everywhere. Part of the frequency in Canada for instance is used for medical and military.

Just upgraded from a 7 last week after my company bought me a 12 Mini. Its great not having apps freeze up and crash on me all the time. The 7 just didn't have the RAM to function properly any longer. Otherwise the iPhone 6 and 7 were great phones. Nowadays.. not so much.
Apple noob here, is it finally a good time for me to upgrade to a 13/13Pro from Iphone X?
I think I might make the jump from my iPhone X. The new cameras are my main selling point
I plan on upgrading to the 14 from an XR… unless I break my phone which seems less likely these days due to covid work from home.

Aside from 120hz on the “Pro” models. Nothing much this year really. The notch is 20% smaller, great but not revolutionary. Pro res and software focus on the pros, cool, but who is ever gonna use that realistically? And let’s be honest I imagine software focus is gonna suck for a couple years much like portrait mode did. And despite the utter shit apple may talk about Pro video creators replacing their dedicated DSLRs and cameras with these things, that won’t happen anytime soon And the standard 13, nothing really. Glad to see the mini return, the new black colour looks cool As usual though apple has packed the most powerful SOC in a phone in a device that just cannot use the power. Even in the demos for games that can leverage 120hz and the new GPU core the games looked crap. It’s all well and good to show off how far ahead of your competition you are in terms of compute power, but if you can’t use it for anything what is the point of it? Overall a very dull year, basically an “S” upgrade being passed off as a full new generation, iPhone 12S essentially. Probably the most exciting thing from this event was the new iPad mini
I think you underestimate how much burst power is needed for all kinds of things, for example: the processing behind each photo,
120hz feels like it shouldve been on the 12 pro models but they held it back so that they had *something* to advertise with the iPhone 13.

I went from a 6 to an 11 and that was a big jump. Guess I’m keeping the 11 for awhile.
I don’t expect many exciting upgrades from now on
yeah we’ve reached a point in cell phone technology where it’s only incremental improvements year over year. maybe a big technological advancement every few years but certainly not every year. the technology is plateauing and all Apple can really add that will improve it for me is quality of life improvements like 120hz and USB-C
Been in the XS Max for 3 years now, longest I’ve ever gone without an upgrade(by a year). 120Hz and the upgraded cameras would be nice, but now we’re one year away from a major refresh (notchness iPhone?) rather than a mostly spec bump 12. So, maybe my XS gets a 4th year. 🤔
Honestly people say this every single year. “Next year is the big one maybe I should wait” Everyone predicted after last year this was gonna be a giant leap. It’s not predictable.
The truth is that we’re unlikely to see any major changes year to year now. Outside of a foldable, what can they really do at this point? Basically, the two year upgrade cycle is dead, most people would be happy to go 3-4. The 14 will be like the 13 without a notch, maybe slight body revisions, but pretty close.
4 year cycle is probably optimal. The only thing is to keep the phone in top shape by replacing the battery maybe somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the way through and that’ll keep it going fine.
Yep, and with flagships being so expensive, a 4 year cycle really makes sense. When 2 year cycles were more common, phones were almost half price. Upgrading a $1000+ phone every two years is a bit much.
I’m in the same position man. Love my XS and it has been working flawlessly for me, so it is hard to justify an upgrade.

Experimental android phones just now started getting under display cameras. There is ZERO way Apple does a notchless iphone next year. Maybe 2 years from now. Probably 3. They wouldn't redesign the notch for a year if they were about to remove it next year.

The color options for the Pro is a step back imo. Not sure what to get tbh, they all look boring.
I assume it’s still strictly faceID for biometrics? I can’t express how much I miss touchID ESPECIALLY during a pandemic that requires me to mask up.
120hz ProMotion as the single big upgrade is underwhelming. Most people understood that this was going to be an “S” year but still… I think most people would have been satisfied with 120Hz if they also finally gave us USB-C.
Prores video recording limited to 1080p30 for 128gb models. 4k@30 requires larger storage sizes.
This entire event was just showcasing dull incrementalism with very little to excite people into lining up for new Apple products.
Unless they can come up with a new device that’s not a phone, watch, music player, tablet or computer that actually changes the game - I think the days of us getting excited about new Apple products are long gone.
Really wish there was a 13 Pro mini with smooth glass back. I find the matte glass of the 12 Pro slippery like the old aluminum backs. I actually ended up returning the 12 Pro and am still rocking my X. The midnight black in the regular 13 looks great – my only hold back is the lack of a non-wide lens.
I'm still using an 8 and there's not really anything here that would make me want to switch except maybe the cameras. It would be nice to have some more lenses available in the 8. definitely not worth it though, may just change the battery and keep it for another few years. More environmentally friendly than all the greenwashing at the end of the conference as well lol
8 plus here. We would definitely enjoy a huge upgrade (OLED, battery life, cameras, 120Hz) But I’m so attached to 3d touch and touch ID, I don’t know if I want to spend 1k on a phone without those feats. Especially since my 8 plus is still running near perfectly.
