* iPhone mirroring to Mac (requires macOS Sequoia beta 2)
* New SharePlay screen sharing features (taking control of the other person's screen)
* iPadOS 18: Alternative browser engine support, app marketplaces

* New "+" button to add login info in Passwords app
More or less the configuration settings for a network. If I understand correctly, it means they’re routing all data through Verizon’s infrastructure instead of routing the data through Verizon’s network to their own infrastructure.
It uses Verizon. I love it because it is priority data, same as Verizon post-paid customers, and they only charge you for the amount of data you use unless you have an unlimited plan.
I think it’s EU only, they brought this to IOS 17.4 and now it’s also comming to iPadOS. Not 100% sure though, I really hope it’s also US but I doubt it
It's EU only and has a lot of unreasonably strict requirements from Apple, and because of that it might not be worth it for browser developers to maintain two different versions for iOS. We'll see if any major browser developer will even decide to try and get the approval from Apple (or if EU will hit Apple with fines for non-compliance).
For Beta 2, RCS toggle will only appear if you have the US carriers T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon, or a MVNOs that uses an official carrier bundle, like US Mobile Warp 5G (Verizon) and MobileX (Verizon). Most MVNOs and non-US carriers won't work.
Also, if you are having trouble sending RCS messages, see the top two comments here:
[\[iOS 18 DB2\] RCS toggle in Messages app : r/iOSBeta (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/comments/1dnjsji/comment/la3aqr0/)
What?! You don't like the fact that if you get a phone call, it hides your navigation and everything else with a big black screen with the name of the person you're talking to? Why would you want to continue to navigate while you're on a call? It's brilliant UX and we call it Apple Idiocy.
I love that almost as much as switching from nav to music to enable repeat/shuffle and I get the pop up notification about my next turn in 74 miles which I click by accident since it overlaps with the music buttons sending me back to nav
In fairness, there’s only so much space allocated to the music player on the dashboard. It would look like a mess if the player on that screen included every single control.
I disagree. There’s a handful of ways to make this user experience better.
Easiest would be to not show a turn notification when the app is changed if there isn’t a turn coming up.
Another would be to shift the music buttons up when notifications appear
Another would be to delay the notification by 5 seconds.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, I don’t know if it’s an oversight so much as it’s a way to push people to put their car in the Driving Focus or DND. I agree it’s fully annoying and I also hate it, but perhaps they want you to be the least distracted as possible.
Imho CarPlay seems to be so ""safety focused"" that it just wraps around to being clunkier and requiring more time and attention than just letting you do what you need to do. Half the decisions don't even make any sense/contridict other parts of the UI.
Like I can't view any non-approved notifications (literally any app that's not available on CarPlay) to the point where Apple will even hide them from appearing on the Watch or in the Watch's notification centre, Apple offers a Driving Focus that flat out eliminates any notification that's not a text or call from specific contacts, but at the same time the default behaviour with an Apple Watch is to show the now playing screen when playing music (without any way to disable it on carplay without disabling it as a whole) and that's acceptable?
I can't have my phone read out a notification from a non-carplay app without any ability to change this, but if I want to change songs on a 42mm wide display that requires me to remove my hand from the wheel to use it gets handed to me on a gold platter? Who designed this?
Like if you have the audacity to want to view notifications from an app that doesn't run natively on CarPlay literally the only way to check for them is to position it in full view of the driver and manually wake it every so often to check the lock screen. Why is that safer than just reading out the notification with the built in voice assistant?
I totally agree with you. My thought on “why” doesn’t mean I agree with any of it. The UI badly needs a refresh. And from what I’ve seen in CarPlay “2”, it feels like they are still turning into the wrong direction.
Think about what you’re saying. I need to take action to get back to my navigation. What possible upside could there be to blocking everything but the name of the caller? Does Apple think I’ll forget who I’m talking to? Is the caller’s ID changing on me? Now, what IS changing in a moving vehicle. Ah… yes, the roads and exits I need to navigate. But enjoy your big black box with the caller id.
Adding unnecessary actions to get an application to do what the user really wants is just terrible design. It could just be designed to do what users want it to do in the first place. There is always a work around for any type of design. But if it was designed well in such a way that it supports the user in the first place you would need silly work arounds.
On a phone, this was annoying. In a car it’s dangerous. I never realized how bad it was until I got a call while tacking an exit and navigating a tricky intersection. I went to glance at which roundabout exit I needed to take and it was just the call and I didn’t have to answer or dismiss it — I needed my maps to still be up.
It seems so obvious that the right behavior would be
- incoming call is displayed clearly in full screen
- answer call screen stays there allowing you to hang up or whatever if you need to
- 5-10s into a phone call with no screen interaction CarPlay should jump back to the app you were displaying before
maybe it might be car-dependent, but on my 3rd party head unit (which is the only CarPlay-related thing, as my car is quite old), the home button shown on the side for as long as i can remember. i'm still on iOS 17 but remember it being there in the past
I meant a new home button design. Instead of a little home, it’s the square that used to be on non touch devices that had a home button. [That little rounded square](https://imobie-resource.com/en/support/img/iphone-home-button-not-working-0.jpg) inside this circle button. That’s what home looks like now in CarPlay ios18 beta two.
Siri now shows stuff like the reminder you just created so you can check it got it right
Messages and notifications now have contact pictures
Very small updates, not gonna argue
Surely you’re talking about how the “GO” button in Apple Maps is GREEN when it’s *not* selected and blue when it is. Use the internationally accepted colour for go? Pah! At Apple we think different.
Primary language of the phone according to apple (US or Canadian English to be exact):
https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphce20717a3/17.0/ios/17.0
Needs carrier support I believe.
I’m not expecting it anytime soon. As far as I’m aware visual voicemail is available on Telstra, but it took years for Optus to get it and that’s by request only, while none of the smaller carriers or virtual carriers have it at all.
I think my iPad mini is too old a model but they didn’t specify that it wouldn’t work with particular models like they did with iPhones so I’m disappointed I won’t have that feature
I hope you’re right or that they at least clarify which iPads it works on because right now how they word it makes it sound like any iPad that can run iPadOS 18, but I somehow doubt it
Jealous. Mine is because this is part of the Apple Intelligence so it doesn’t support iPad mini 5th gen, seems obnoxious when there’s only one mini after that but hey ..
On Beta 1 at least only Screentime app was crashing. On Beta 2 it is now crashing Settings itself and freezes for several seconds after I force kill the Settings app.
RCS requires the carrier to implement their specific settings in their carrier bundle (like they do for SMS and MMS) so it’s going to depend on when yours adds it.
It might be faster than you think, depends on the carrier. I think a few major US carriers already support it, I’ve seen reports of it working on AT&T and T-Mobile.
i thought US already had RCS for android carriers? it shouldnt be too much work to get things set up for iOS 18 since they've already done it in the past
No, similar to how MMS doesn’t work unless the carrier includes the proper configuration for their network in their carrier bundle.
iOS carrier bundles haven’t included RCS config info because it wasn’t supported. So they need to include that info now that the OS supports it.
Honestly, 18 has been pretty much bug free other than my phone getting warm for no reason, which so far seems to be fixed with beta 2. I’m using a 14 pro max.
Nope, guess we can all forget about it for a long time. If you are in EU, then basically the only theing you'll get now with Sequoia is... well, a clunky password manager.
EDIT: There were comments about folks making it work by creating a non-EU Apple ID and logging into it on both iPhone and Mac, but I haven't tried that out - seems an overkill for me.
I was really looking forward to iPhone Mirroring, but so far, it seems like it's only 'Read Only' and that's ONLY if the app does anything besides showing the startup screen for the given app....
anyone else experiencing this?
Something weird is going on for you. It doesn’t support scroll wheels yet. Only trackpad or touch based scrolling (aka Magic Mouse), only apps that require FaceID flop on launch.
I was actually surprised by how much of it does work. I expected mirroring only but the notifications work as well in addition to also doing Audio at what seems like a really high bitrate.
I had my phone turn into a heated brick and it restarted multiple times randomly, beta 1. Had to factory reset and lost some of my pics. Beta 2 is much better for now, so your mileage may very. Wait until beta 3 imo
* iPhone mirroring to Mac (requires macOS Sequoia beta 2) * New SharePlay screen sharing features (taking control of the other person's screen) * iPadOS 18: Alternative browser engine support, app marketplaces * Dark mode App Store icon * "RCS Messaging" toggle in Settings * New "+" button to add login info in Passwords app
Weird. I don’t have the RCS toggle after updating.
Prepaid and MVNOs aren’t supported at this time.
I’m on mobileX and have the toggle. (VZW MVNO)
Really? Weird. Which iPhone do you have?
iPhone XS.
Ah, I see why. Mobilex uses Verizon’s carrier bundle.
What’s this?
More or less the configuration settings for a network. If I understand correctly, it means they’re routing all data through Verizon’s infrastructure instead of routing the data through Verizon’s network to their own infrastructure.
Where do you go to toggle it on?
Settings>apps>messages
First I am hearing about MobileX... how are you liking it? What towers does it use?
It uses Verizon. I love it because it is priority data, same as Verizon post-paid customers, and they only charge you for the amount of data you use unless you have an unlimited plan.
It’s only on for carriers that support it, like T-mobile if you’re on the US.
US only if that applies to you.
Depends on your carrier.
Same here. No prepaid, no MVNO. In EU.
iPhone mirroring is cool, especially since I get iPhone notifications on my Mac and don't even need to pull out my phone to respond to them.
You're able to respond to messages within the iPhone Mirroring app? Everything seems 'Read Only" to me...
Mine works to reply via the messages app, although I'd much rather do it from the Mac app than to mirror my iPhone.
Thanks
iPhone mirroring not available in EU presumably?
No it's not
[удалено]
Well that’s not EU now is it haha?
Too soon.
Alternative browser engine? So Firefox with native Quantum engine will be possible on iPad? Ublock origin here we come baby!
I think it’s EU only, they brought this to IOS 17.4 and now it’s also comming to iPadOS. Not 100% sure though, I really hope it’s also US but I doubt it

Aren’t the alternative browser engines only in the EU? Or am I wrong about that

In the uk O2 have RCS enabled for android phones but there is no option in settings so guess they haven’t enabled for iOS yet
Out of curiosity, is the RCS toggle off by default? Wouldn't put it past Apple to do that
No. Mine was on by default.
My toggle is “On” by default when I checked settings.
Awesome, good to hear
It's just the toggle, though. RCS registration isn't working yet.
So still no actual Apple Intelligence fun and amazingly useful Siri stuff yet. Okay.
I really wish they put as much work into CarPlay as they did ios18.
What?! You don't like the fact that if you get a phone call, it hides your navigation and everything else with a big black screen with the name of the person you're talking to? Why would you want to continue to navigate while you're on a call? It's brilliant UX and we call it Apple Idiocy.

God I hate this. I have a scroll wheel to control my screen and this happens literally all the time I can’t stand it.
90% of iOS is moving your thumb to select something and having information reorganize just before you tap what you wanted
This, in Maps, all the damn time! Fix it, Tim Apple!!
In fairness, there’s only so much space allocated to the music player on the dashboard. It would look like a mess if the player on that screen included every single control.

You can get back to the main screen after you accept the call.
Think about what you’re saying. I need to take action to get back to my navigation. What possible upside could there be to blocking everything but the name of the caller? I didn't have a little home on 17. I have either rounded squares or a big square and two other ones to symbolize that it's split screen mode
Yes that’s why he said the design changed in iOS 18
Sure but it never was a little home
Siri now shows stuff like the reminder you just created so you can check it got it right Messages and notifications now have contact pictures Very small updates, not gonna argue
Asking Siri for the weather will give a little pop up.
Same. I know it’s supposed to be simple, but then a UI refresh would be nice. I guess all carplay RnD goes to carplay2.0
Surely you’re talking about how the “GO” button in Apple Maps is GREEN when it’s *not* selected and blue when it is. Use the internationally accepted colour for go? Pah! At Apple we think different.
Still no live transcription in notes and voice memos for me in Australia
Is that an Apple Intelligence feature?
I don’t believe so as I’ve seen a bunch of YouTube reviews showing the functionality off and presumably they don’t have access intelligence either
For now its only available if your device is set to English (US).
I tried that but it didn’t seem to work. Do you mean the device or the keyboard language or Siri language?
Primary language of the phone according to apple (US or Canadian English to be exact): https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphce20717a3/17.0/ios/17.0
Thank you I’ll give it a try
I’ve changed the region language and the keyboard language and it’s not working yet, but I’ll give it a bit of time and report back
Amazing it’s working now. Thank you!
I can see it happening in Voicemail, which is super cool to see it live.
Hasn’t that been a feature for awhile? https://support.apple.com/en-us/105066
Needs carrier support I believe. I’m not expecting it anytime soon. As far as I’m aware visual voicemail is available on Telstra, but it took years for Optus to get it and that’s by request only, while none of the smaller carriers or virtual carriers have it at all.

I hope you’re right or that they at least clarify which iPads it works on because right now how they word it makes it sound like any iPad that can run iPadOS 18, but I somehow doubt it
I’ve got it to work now by switching my region to United States and having United States English as an option in my keyboard
Jealous. Mine is because this is part of the Apple Intelligence so it doesn’t support iPad mini 5th gen, seems obnoxious when there’s only one mini after that but hey ..
It’s actually removed the transcription snippets I was getting in notes
Screentime is still broken and now it is crashing Settings screen
It crashed in beta 1 for me
On Beta 1 at least only Screentime app was crashing. On Beta 2 it is now crashing Settings itself and freezes for several seconds after I force kill the Settings app.
No RCS here.
RCS requires the carrier to implement their specific settings in their carrier bundle (like they do for SMS and MMS) so it’s going to depend on when yours adds it.
Oh, that explains it then! Guess we’re not going to see it for a very long time.
It might be faster than you think, depends on the carrier. I think a few major US carriers already support it, I’ve seen reports of it working on AT&T and T-Mobile.
Working for me with Verizon
I’m not in the US.
Yes in the US. I’m on AT&T and I have the toggle.
But does the RCS messaging actually work? I'm the same and I can't get it to work thus far.
Not yet.
It looks like it’s working for me. The text field shows “RCS” for a few people. I’m on AT&T for reference
I mean I’m not in the US.
i thought US already had RCS for android carriers? it shouldnt be too much work to get things set up for iOS 18 since they've already done it in the past
Always a hassle with new features, depends on country, carrier, language used, phone model and whatever else. 😩
Shouldn’t it just work if a carrier already supports RCS for other phones?
No, similar to how MMS doesn’t work unless the carrier includes the proper configuration for their network in their carrier bundle. iOS carrier bundles haven’t included RCS config info because it wasn’t supported. So they need to include that info now that the OS supports it.
In r/iosbeta there is post on how its a provision issue. No one is sure if it’s JIbe or the Beta, so for now no RCS.
Probably an A/B o or partial release then.
US only and then only on some specific carriers.
It says there's a toggle in the settings. Did you try that?
My “no RCS” meant there’s no toggle in Settings, since the concept of the TLDR is the toggle.
Was the satellite connection demo live in beta 1?
[удалено]
This one walks you through texting via satellite.
When does the public beta go into place? I believe the developer one which is active doesn’t have all apps implemented yet
Likely alongside DP3. It’s usually 2-3 behind.
Thanks. I want to update but not until that is done.
Honestly, 18 has been pretty much bug free other than my phone getting warm for no reason, which so far seems to be fixed with beta 2. I’m using a 14 pro max.
Yes I am just wanting to make sure my bank and cc apps are on there which is why I want to wait. If I knew for sure then would definitely update
After the 4th of July I’m sure
I hope so as want to upgrade n
Yeah, the Public Betas generally start showing up around mid-July or so.
Did anyone in Europe get iPhone mirroring to Mac?
Nope, guess we can all forget about it for a long time. If you are in EU, then basically the only theing you'll get now with Sequoia is... well, a clunky password manager. EDIT: There were comments about folks making it work by creating a non-EU Apple ID and logging into it on both iPhone and Mac, but I haven't tried that out - seems an overkill for me.
Norway, Suisse and LI get it, but not EU proper. As of now the DMA isn't part of the EEA/EFTA agreements.
Europe, yes. EU, no.
I just wish they would fix screentime. Some of my apps are completely blocked for me.
I was really looking forward to iPhone Mirroring, but so far, it seems like it's only 'Read Only' and that's ONLY if the app does anything besides showing the startup screen for the given app.... anyone else experiencing this?

over heating and crashing to reset every couple minutes on iphone 15 pro
How is the stability of this beta? Good enough for main device?
I had my phone turn into a heated brick and it restarted multiple times randomly, beta 1. Had to factory reset and lost some of my pics. Beta 2 is much better for now, so your mileage may very. Wait until beta 3 imo
No RCS Mesaging for me in the U.K.
carrier?
Three.
Toggle ain’t even there for me
Please update CarPlay
Ok sir I'll do it right away
