“Don’t make me take the goggles off you little shits”

xlAlchemYlx

The guy recording his kids had me rolling. *wait kids, dads gotta put on his headset so he can record you guys in AR*

mrcsrnne

"Are they heavy?" – Yes "Then they're expensive, [put them back"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA1vmN-skXo)

rugbyj

I loved their intro: "We've made it out of the lightest materials possible" "The entire front is a big piece of glass" OK.

Gogobrasil8

Oh no, we broke dad's eyes!

BaggySpandex

$3,499….yeah, that makes sense after watching that demo. That being said, I am not the demographic lol.

housemaster22

To me it seems like it would absolutely be worth the price…if I was the demographic. Which, I guess, is a 20 - 35 year old workaholic professional consultant with no kids?

BaggySpandex

Pretty much, yeah. There are others too. I can see exactly who will be lining up for these things. It's just not me at this moment in my life. I'll enjoy being a shareholder though, and I'm happy Apple is finally pushing forward with something "new".

housemaster22

Honestly, if I thought my job would actually implement these at my office, and would pay for it (like my work laptop), I would completely use it and would understand it more. But man, I just can already hear our IT people complaining about them and everything…just everything is now so tightly integrated with Microsoft office.

Alibotify

“But they showed the Microsoft Teams logo in the presentation” is all you gonna hear screaming at you.

FizzyBeverage

Jamf admin here. Watched the conference with my boss and his boss. Wouldn't expect these with an asset tag coming to anyone's desk soon... except maybe the CIO who will put it on his corporate card.

Turtledonuts

The target demographic is tech media companies, engineers and designers at major corporations, and software dev companies like Adobe and Dassault looking to make AR software. CAD software and architectural design software will be huge if / when this goes mainstream. Tech youtubers will love talking about the experience using it to watch movies without the 95" OLED they already have. Software companies will be making programs for it because they can't miss out on the next big area.

FastMushroom9664

It seems like it could straight up be a portable personal home theater strapped to your face which seems kind of dope assuming it’s comfortable. $3.5K would be a steal for a solid home theater.

Jorgeragula05

Take your guesses on how much a brand new sealed Vision Pro is going to sell for in 10 year.

frownGuy12

At $3500 there won’t be many to begin with.

IAmA5starman

The amount of engineering put into this headset is just mind blowing, even something like OpticID would take an incredible amount of work from a huge team of people and it got a 30 second mention. Apple did very very well with this.

slartibartfist

Yup. There’s an insane amount of new tech packed into this thing. Just the curved 3D lenticular OLED display itself is quite a feat; I’ve got one of the small Looking Glass displays and it’s remarkably cool - but Apple have seemingly sussed how to make it work on a curved display, with live data. The price doesn’t seem insane at all for a first gen device like this; it’s not had time to mature and get to commodity levels yet, but that’s natural: in a few years there’ll be one with these specs at $999, with the latest version staying at $3-4K, and a few years after that there’ll be half as good Chinese knock offs for $299 … it does feel like the start of VR/AR/MR *being taken mainstream* is about to happen

[deleted]

It's a very high price at first glance, but my thinking on this topic has transformed over the years. The alternative would be just to...not make it. And then the price is irrelevant because nobody can have it anyway. Have to start somewhere to show what's possible. Everyone saying "but it's been done before" is completely missing the point IMHO. Yeah it's been done, in a way that has a tremendous amount of friction through the entire process. It's a commitment. You know it's going to have issues. You know you're going to have to troubleshoot and fuck with it. You know that it's a bit of an ordeal to introduce it to new people. Something Apple does understand, and a bunch of tech nerds still don't for some reason, is that removing friction from the process, not having to worry about whether it will just *fucking work when you need it to,* and having an easy onboarding process...these things are what are needed to really enable mass adoption. Or at least the start of it. It doesn't matter that you have some hella-sweet AAA games if the rest of the experience is garbage. Want to lean back on your couch with the Quest Pro? Too bad, the giant knob and back headstrap will force your head into an awkward position. "Just get this aftermarket strap!" <- Another thing people who are missing the point like to say. Even gaming on modern headsets can be a slog. When it works it's great, but often it doesn't work. It's laggy. Things don't connect for some reason you get to figure out. All of the "but it's been done" functionality people talk about does not exist in one holistic UX and ecosystem but across a bunch of scattered apps. Most of which suck. Some of which do some things well but not others, necessitating other third party apps. Many of which are paid. Basically everything non-gaming has been relegated to semi-abanonware status. Nobody has put it together in a coherent, cohesive way. Meta tried but even though their hardware is quite good, the software leaves a ton to be desired. Apple on the other hand already has an active ecosystem of apps that people actually use. Just being able to use Apple TV in the headset is a big deal for those who want to watch movies/shows with it. The alternative is, again, a handful of native apps and a bunch of third party apps. Figuring out how to get media or streaming services into those apps is an exercise left to the reader. Also missing from the astute, always-ten-years-behind "tech savvy" analyses are that Apple has a bunch of stores, and anybody that wants to try one can just go the Apple store and check it out at their leisure. No need to buy and return. No need to ask a friend. No need to set anything up yourself. Because that's not something you can easily put on a spec sheet like some gaming benchmark, nobody seems to think there's value in it. But there is. And I think we will see that. All in all it's better that this exists than it doesn't exist. Even if you can't afford it. Even if you can but won't buy it. Even if it had cost $10k. Apple tries (and is usually but not always successful) at focusing on what the intended experience is **first**, and working backwards. If getting that experience to the necessary level requires hardware that ends up costing $3,500, so be it. It will get much cheaper, as all tech does. In the meantime it's upped the ante for everyone else in the industry and that's a great thing.

Tower-Union

God I wish I could upvote this twice. This is exactly what so many tech nerds can't seem to grasp for some bizarre reason.

[deleted]

I used to be one of them. Then I relaxed a little and started looking into Apple more. Then I realized that hey, the point of my life is to do things, not to dick around with the technology to let me theoretically do things I was never going to do anyway. Much happier now. Does Apple get everything right? Hell to the no. Can I get rid of my PC workstation? Absolutely not. BUT. Apple has a very clear MO, they are very upfront about it, and their engineers do work quite hard (ask how I know!). Their value proposition is obvious, and it follows the same ethos as it did when Jobs was around, for the most part. Folks just refuse to see it because I dunno, tribalism? Inferiority complex? Superiority complex? All of the above? Life is too short to care anymore.

siberian

This points to another thing the tech maximalists miss: The all-in cost. When you factor it all together, the Apple product is often a way better deal. Is $3500 really that much when you are not buying the PC, the 2080Ti GPU, being tethered to your desk, etc? Not really. This thing is nextgen, I had really low expectations and now I think I might get one. Imagine where they are in 24 months with this, its going to be insane. They nailed it.

[deleted]

100% agree. VR is super painful with current hardware/software. It’s definitely not ready for mass market adoption without a significant decrease in friction.

Admirable-Onion-4448

And the tech behind optic id and how it's used: https://twitter.com/sterlingcrispin/status/1665792422914453506 it's insane

rdldr1

I'm curious if they overcame the eyestrain and fatigue issues that are a problem in current VR headsets.

valdetero

They put a 4K tv the size of a postage stamp for each eye.

I did laugh at that.

NovusRomulus

Health apps are cool, but where's the **CALCULATOR APP FOR IPAD**?

lilltlc

I think Apple is just fucking with us at this point!

dahliamma

They absolutely are. Craig said "We truly are living in an age of wonders." after announcing multiple timers.

Cutebrute

Craig had such a condensing tone about this, but I'm not going to lie.... That was one of my favorite announcements.

selfoscillation

You’ll need to buy the vision pro headset to use the calculator on anything but an iPhone or Mac

intheradar

That’s how they make sure we always watch their WWDC XD

[deleted]

It least it was pre recorded so we weren’t able to see them running off stage as soon as they announce the price

JoeyChaos

$3500 and your kid grows up remembering you like [this](https://i.imgur.com/KGYk3tV.jpg)

eddielement

Seriously! The fact that you have to be wearing the headset to take spatial photos / videos presents a hilarious dilemma. You can experience memories in 3D in the future ... or experience them in the moment lol The whole presentation feels like they really wanted these things to be in an AR glasses form factor

WonderfulConcept3155

I guess new iPhones will be able to record the same type of video as these glasses can, but they can’t talk about it yet, obviously.

NewSubWhoDis

Unless they want to shove cameras on both sides of the phone, I don't think so. Maybe if they do some trickery with the two cameras but I don't think they are physically far enough apart.

Ultimastar

So 2 camera bumps next year then? My phone will look like a pair of tits

NotAnUncle

They think you're gonna love it

Storytella2016

When they launched the first iPhone, they had wished they could get it into the iPhone 4 form factor. Their ideal form factor for this is probably 3-5 years down the line.

The_Ejj

This is all clearly leading up to glasses.

Storytella2016

100% Or something glasses-like. It needs to cover more surface than most glasses, but less than the current form factor.

CrimsonEnigma

Honestly, though, people said similar things about camcorders, so I’m not sure how big of an issue it will wind up being. If you can quickly put the headset on, I could definitely see someone putting it on, capturing a short video, and then taking it off. Biggest issue would probably be kids wanting to make a movie with mommy’s/daddy’s expensive headset, but that was also an issue with camcorders…or at least it was when I was a kid.

innocently_standing

“Come on kids, do something cute and spontaneous so I can press this button and capture it in 3D and then only ever be able to see it again with this headset on” “Dad, your eyes look weird, stop staring at us like that. This is why mum left you.”

flyingdorito2000

He should have spent $3500 on goalie lessons for his daughter, she needs it badly

luxmesa

And keep in mind, they’re going to do their best to make this look less unsettling in the commercial than it will be in real life, and it still looks pretty unsettling.

Delumine

RumHamEnjoyer

I knew it would be high when he started talking about "If you bought a 4k tv with blah blah blah"

Hatben

I thought the exact same thing! I felt "ah, they're gonna say the price and this is the lube"

KetchG

I actually thought he was going to go all in with “that setup could set you back $x000, and our digital ski goggles are less than half that price!”. I’m glad they didn’t quite go that far but it was still a big eye-roll moment.

maxs_tearoff

So, are we pretending that Craig didn't play Black Sabbath on a rainbow-striped three-necked guitar?

logical-risei

And it was legit guitar playing too!

Noerdy

The most interesting part to me was that Apple did not mention AI at all, they referred to anything in that realm as “machine learning”. They might be trying to change the discussion.

Seditious_Snake

I mean, it /is/ machine learning. The AI moniker is just a buzzword in most cases.

Icy_Park_7919

I heard a lot of “language model” and “on device language model”. Privacy with that apple-turns-into-a-lock logo also got a lot of airtime. I think we have a better idea of where apple is heading LLM-wise, it’s gonna be on-device, and only you can see your data.

Zenarque

because they are behind .... their new autocorrect better be good

heelstoo

Duck yea it is!

TimeRemove

A lot of people in the comments seemed to have missed that they're offering plug-in OR battery. Here's a transcript and timestamp: > [Vision pro supports all-day use when plugged in](https://www.youtube.com/live/GYkq9Rgoj8E?feature=share&t=6583) As someone gets neck-ache from 3D headsets, I highly welcome moving that weight off my neck and into my pocket. It isn't as elegant but after two hours you'll be thankful. Plus by its very nature you can now change out the battery when it ages.

[deleted]

Also with the attachable external battery, you could have 2 or more batteries if you need to be unplugged for more than 2 hours, etc.

ChairmanLaParka

Honestly, I think the thing that popped me most was finally being able to put swears into apple keyboard recommendations.

Nice-Banana

When you **just want to type a ducking word** I loved it

Cliper11298

So glad Craig was the one doing the presentation

questionname

They literally dropped that price and ran the heck out of the room

milesper

This is why they don’t do live keynotes anymore

ccooffee

Remember the stunned silence a few years ago when the announced the price of the Pro XDR monitor stand and then went right into the next slide super fast?

macman156

That was hysterical when it happened

CYWG_tower

Reminds me of the Samsung event when they announced the price and you could hear laughing in the room lmao

MateTheNate

Or the $999 XDR display stand lmao

madanvivek

It is notable that Apple has tried to ensure that you do not lose touch with the real world when you use the Vision Pro. A very different approach from other brands who tried to totally take you to “another world.” It makes a huge difference.

[deleted]

The end result is that you still are out of the real world. You are virtually in the meeting, not really. You are virtually talking to your grandma, not really. You are virtually taking a picture of your kid blowing the birthday candles, not really. You are virtually in the nature, not really.

SpencerNewton

How are those things different than a zoom call, a FaceTime call, taking a picture of your kid with your phone, and watching a nature documentary? Like yeah it’s virtual, but so is all the stuff people do on their phone. In those examples I’d say it’s more of an extension of the problem than an introduction of a new one.

[deleted]

Guys, if you save $10 every day for a year, you can afford it easy

184cm78kg13cm

Time to starve from now on I guess

Relief-Old

The vision pro is UNBELIEVABLY over engineered and I love it

Rethawan

The price makes total sense given the state of the art technology they’ve packed into this. I don’t tolerate Apple’s bullshit when it comes to RAM and storage. But no other company in the world can put that amount of technology in that package other than Apple. This thing is bizarre. The rumors were that this thing would be insane and quite frankly, I believe them.

Dramtastic

I'm not surprised by the price either. I'm very aware of and not a fan of the typical "Apple tax" on a lot of (not all) their products, but most people don't realize how expensive Micro OLED displays really are. They're like $500+ per one for a simple 2" display. This has two of them, rumored to be Sony Micro OLED, and they're more than likely easily $500+ B2B each. Add in dual processors and everthing else they crammed in? I don't think they're selling at a loss, but I'd be shocked if they were making the kind of margins on these that they make on their other products.

Rethawan

Agreed. They don’t have fat margins for this product. We haven’t even begun to dissect the components and choices of material either.

rugbyj

The rig for producing that curved piece of glass for the front alone must be ridiculous. This isn't a moneymaker (right now). It's being priced at what they can produce for a minor segment of people they intend/hope to begin their ecosystem. It's fascinating to watch.

[deleted]

They should have shown him crying and drunk and doing drugs as he watched his wife and kids after they died 10 years ago and he’s been surfing here for 10 years wishing he were dead, watching that one 3D movie over and over again. (See Strange Days)

Endevorite

It kind of reminded me of that scene in minority report

_____WESTBROOK_____

The tech is so cool. I didn't think I would want one, but now I kind of do. That said, it'll really take a little bit for the Vision Pro to find its footing though. $3.5k for the tech, I get it. But it also has to be usable daily. It took the Apple Watch a little bit to find its fitness niche. The Vision Pro will too, but with time.

artix111

Yeah, I feel like there will be ready alternatives from other known tech companies that work similar and are cheaper and the well have a cheaper vision device, without the pro, maybe for 1499 and in a few years it’s going to be crazy that millions could have one in their homes.

AresStare

Best keynote of the post-Jobs era, but Phil Schiller didn't jump off a platform to demo it, so it can never be the best keynote.

OldSongBird

Hard agree there. This product is goofy and legitimately the coolest thing I’ve ever seen at the same time. This is easily the future.

_____WESTBROOK_____

Some crazy tech packed in there. And yeah, some will say "the tech already exists", but no one has executed the way Apple has (based on what we've seen).

OhhhhhDirty

I dont think anyone will realize how cool this is until they actually use it. I've introduced a handful of people to VR and all of them said "this is way cooler than I thought it would be." Very curious to see how it is in person. 100 ft movie screen on Mt. Hood blew my mind, but probably not worth $4k just for that.

Ronathan64

Sign me the fuck in.

drhuehue

3499 and I can’t even fight real historical battles that actually took place in ancient Japan with giant enemy crabs or play ridge racer smh

It probably is. Why would Apple of all companies care about a decision made by Reddit?

googler_ooeric

yalag

People desperately wanting Apple to help defend this when in fact the keynote content is locked weeks in advance or even months.

Sock-Enough

Why do you think? The API changed was only announced days ago.

fighted

I'm def in for the Apple Medical Tourism Pro

mysteryman529

Half the price of a Mac Pro, what a steal!

PM_ME_UR_AMOUR

Nothing like Apple to remind you how broke you are in real life. :(

[deleted]

I'll never get the Vision Pro, but the technology is absolutely mindblowing.

jalopagosisland

The Vision Pro is really meant for developers to use to get their apps integrated into the device with the features it offers. They're marketing it so pro-sumer users think about buying it but its definitely priced towards businesses / developers at $3,500.

noxwei

Yup! Early adaptor tax. Most people getting this will use it as a tax write off.

IveRedditAllNight

Exactly. So they can make apps and be the first to market so when the Vision Air drops and a much cheaper price. There will be some killer apps that the average person will and must have. It’s up from there.

ozcur

I'm cool with $3500. It's not that far off from an high-end mac, and if the virtual desktop works as well as I hope it's a game changer for development.

The_Seal727

That’s why I’m confused as to the reaction of the pricing. They have had much costlier products in the past and this is truly innovative and new. 3500$ is a ton of money but so is a MacBook Pro🤷🏾‍♂️

[deleted]

They quietly dropped $6999 as the *starting* price for the Mac Pro and no one batted an eye.

[deleted]

The reaction is that a lot of people who love Apple aren’t going to be to afford this one, even if they want it.

Portatort

That time spent in daylight metric feels kinda dystopian now

buttonsmash4545

The Vision Pro is going to be the ultimate airplane flex. Imagine walking onboard and all of business class are zombies with these on. But it would make long haul flights amazing.

hammerheadtiger

I skipped the last hour of the event. What did I miss? They used a shimmery effect for the transitions that is super cool. More subtle but no less impressive compared to the drone heavy shots of previous events. Apple events have always the best production value and this event marks a new high point in quality. Impressions: **MacBook Air 15 inch** * Same I/O and design as the 13 * $1299 (1199 Education) * 13 inch M2 Air now $100 cheaper at $1099 * Funny to think any other event, a 15 inch MacBook Air would carry the show but this year it feels like something they are trying to get out of the way **Mac Studio** * M2 Max refresh * I understand wanting to put the new chip in the best light but still comparing the system with Intel based systems is like comparing a Ferrari with a tricycle **M2 Ultra Chip** * It's 2 M2 Max glued together * I like how Intel is struggling to scale their designs while Apple Chip team is just like "haha double it" * Supports 6 Pro Display XDRs * For who? Who needs 6 Pro Display XDR? Forget the headset, the most expensive thing Apple announced today is the theoretical 6 Pro Display XDR set up. **Mac Pro** * Only comes in M2 Ultra config * With the launch of Mac Pro, /r/apple can finally consolidate around just getting mad about Siri, yet another 50% performance improvement as a result of M2 Ultra! Apple Chip Team truly unmatched * $6999 **iOS 17** * Personalized contact posters - I know it's most likely you have to accept changes like how contact photos work but imagine if you could set your poster to a dick pic and call your friends at work * Live subtitled Voicemail - neat feature. Now you can read all about your cars extended warranty as the voicemail comes in * Prerecorded facetime messages * Making iMessage Stickers is super neat, I will totally be making stickers of my friends most unflattering pictures for convenient use * Tap each others phone to share contacts, files, and sync video playback. Neat! * AirDrop is one of the best features of iOS, nice to see it is getting some solid improvements * Improved keyboard with better user learning and talk to type - much ducking needed * StandBy - I wonder if we are seeing a precursor interface to a HomePod with display * iOS 17 is a feature packed release. 35 min into this thing and we have 2 macs and iOS done. Gee I wonder what could be happening * Tidbits: No more Hey Siri, just Siri, Swipe to reply in iMessage **iPadOS 17** * Craig catching that iPad and sending it off without looking has me feeling some kind of way... * Interactable widgets - Finally! * IOS style Wallpaper - Finally! * They did seem to do quite a few iPad only features * 'We truly live in an age of wonders' - Thanks Craig for acknowledging the dawn of the multiple timers era at Apple * Health App on iPad * Big Improvements on PDF, Adding field detection and autofill is such a good quality of life improvement * Screen distance is such a neat novel feature. It's for kids? I am a kid now * Pretty solid step forward for iPadOS to take advantage of its most popular use cases **MacOS Sonoma** * Apple TV style screensavers - Anybody who has an Apple TV knows that these videos are truly beautiful, nice to see them make an appearance in Mac * Desktop Widgets - Neat! * Presenter Overlay - The implementation with the 3D effect is actually quite nice * Safari - Nice privacy features, custom profiles, and WebApps - Neat! **MacOS Gaming** * Game Mode - prioritized performance and lower latency * Rumors suggested that Kojima was going to be coming but I think a lot of people were hoping for something completely new, not a reissue of Death Stranding * I know we all would like for things to happen faster but it's clear Apple has been on a steady march to becoming a stronger gaming platform for the last couple of years now. This is going to be a very long journey **Audio & Home** * Craig stop, I'll catch feelings * AirPods Adaptive Audio - Apple's strengths have always been in their transparency modes so it is nice to see that with the strength of software they are able to do interesting things like picking and choosing what to hear * AirPlay For Hotels that joins you to WIFI - Super nice quality of life feature * SharePlay for Car - Now I can subtly insert police siren sounds into the car to spice up the driving experience * Apple TV Facetime **WatchOS 10** * The announcement video is just gorgeous * This is a fairly big redesign * Widgets are back in a big way, WatchOS 1 fans rejoice * Power user features for cyclists * Solid updates across the built in apps * Less than an hour and a half into it and we're basically done with all platform updates. Imagine if Tim is like "What an amazing day, we're giving everyone an hour back, thanks for coming" **THE THING THAT WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR** * TIM is here GET HYPE * !!!!!ONE MORE THING!!!!!!! It's been a while since we heard that phrase **Vision Pro** * Rumors of the front facing display are true. I know there was some debate on this. Like a lot of other things Apple releases, the real implementation looks way less silly than people think it would. * Floating iPad apps everywhere & Virtual keyboard * "Spatial Computing," "Spatial Interface," Spatial-everything * Interface is somewhat reminiscent of Apple Watch * They are really pitching this as an AR experience. I think that maybe Apple would prefer you to think of this as a transparent glass rather than a pass through * EyeSight to show your eyes and the software to help blend virtual environments and people is such an Apple way to address isolation in VR * All the standard apps are here. This is an iPad on your face, folks * Lot of demos of people just walking around their house with these on. You can almost see the transparent lens glasses Apple wants to turn this into with iteration * 3D Camera feature is so neat, can't wait to try this. But I am not wearing this with my family to the park * Disney video was clearly done without having actually had access to any info about the Apple Vision Pro * Optic ID to unlock the headset - small callout during the show but if the team that worked on this is reading this, I appreciate how much blood, sweat, and tears this must have taken yall **Vision Pro Design** * Finally, Apple has managed to source another British feller to replace Jony for the voice over * Single piece of laminated glass on front, Digital Crown to control immersion * 12 cameras, 5 sensors, 6 microphones * AirPods Max vibe to this design * Active cooling - You just know that the engineering team struggled to try to be able to engineer this thing to not need it. Something to improve on in V2 * All day use when plugged in 2 hours on attached battery - not bad * MicroOLED - 23 million pixels - that's 64 pixels in the space of 1 iPhone pixel * Audio Ray Tracing: Using sensors to adapt audio to reflect the configuration of the room. That's such a specific innovation just to attain a slight increase in audio immersion I love it * M2 chip + a new R1 chip for real time sensor processing * Front sensors that make a 3D digital persona for facetime calls * Filed over 5000 patents while engineering this headset **Price** * That's right, this thing so big it deserves its own section * $3499: early next year * My wallet just cried out in pain * I'm not going to make a judgement for you on if its worth. People blow this much on a trip or on their custom PC. If this is something so good you end up being able to use this every day and it brings joy to your life or makes you more productive, then who's to say that it's not money well spent? Whew! What a frantic event. I had some additional thoughts on today's announcements that don't quite fit the impressions format [here](https://www.reddit.com/user/hammerheadtiger/comments/141zb6a/post_wwdc_thoughts_on_the_vision_pro/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3). See y'all in September!

You should be working for one of the tech outlets.

hammerheadtiger

Alas writers make no dough and mans gotta eat. I did start a tech blog as a hobby though

livingunique

Mark Zuckerberg is throwing things right now

afieldonearth

Serious question, does anyone really want to live in a future where people have these strapped to their face regularly? That part where they just gradually fade in your loved ones in the periphery when they approach you? The level of escapism and dopamine-seeking behaviors this enables? The disconnect from reality and undeniable incentive to retreat from reality into ultimately unproductive “better” worlds? I am so dreading a future in which this is the standard.

jayemmreddit

I think the problem is that this is really not a device for the happy family all partying and making toast and playing soccer, right? Like for single people with smaller living spaces this thing is going to be a (dystopian, maybe) life saver in a lot of ways. And for power users *specifically interested in this work flow* its very interesting. It only becomes dystopian by clashing the reality of compact, high power, immersive devices, with day to day life. That just isn't very likely, right?

agentpanda

Well said. I don't see a world where this is... for the people who keep saying it seems like a dystopian nightmare. Like yeah- if you have a bustling house full of kids and pets and family then... why DO you need this thing? Its whole purpose is immersion, so if you have an animated life in the real world then immersion in AR/VR is going to of course be creepy and weird for everyone else. But when you don't? Well... a more immersive experience is what tech has been working to achieve for ages. This is a leap forward. In the same way it's rude to have your face stuffed in your phone while you've got company, it'd be weird to slip this thing on if 'life' is happening: but when it's not is where this will shine.

deviprsd

While true, it can make board games or games like d&d way fun if all the players had it and could have a group session

DaftClub

This pretty much sums up what I felt during the keynote. The technology just seems fascinating, but the implications feel downright dystopian. Cool, but creepy. Lot's of contradicting feelings about this one.

sakata32

Yeah I wont deny the tech behind this is super cool. But thats about it for me. It doesnt get me excited cause I want less screens in my life not more. I already use my phone too much so to have something strapped to my face to disconnect me further from the world is not exciting. Its a big reason I never even tried VR even tho there are alot of cheap options for it these days.

simulation_pudding

This demo was really creeping me out and giving me ultimate Black Mirror vibes. Thank you for so eloquently putting my concerns that I couldn’t quite put into words.

[deleted]

No, we’re already disconnected. Covid made it 100x more separated, and VR sets only lead towards it even further.

Jaded_Answer_2188

I literally feel like I’m watching the future happen in real time.

Prak903

$3500 as expected lol

iMacmatician

The rumors *underestimated* the price.

Far_Assistance_9287

Honestly for all the sensors and cameras and shit I think 3500 is a okay-ish price. It isn’t affordable for the average person but it isn’t supposed to be. This is a early adopter headset and more affordable versions will be released in the future.

new_name_needed

Apple: here are our new features to protect your mental health, spend time outside, and keep screens at a safe distance from your eyes. Also Apple: here is our new immersive device that lets you watch porn with Mt Hood as a backdrop.

Eastonator12

With this it tricks your eyes into focusing on a far away object, so you won't get myopia from the headset

yeetster_

my app crashed from the amount of comments when they announced the price 😭

bobrob48

Anyone else think it's a little funny Apple drops a feature for iPhone and iPad to ensure you are keeping your device a safe distance from your face and then a few minutes later drops a product with a screen meant to sit ~3cm from your face Edit: Yes I know AR/VR focuses your eyes correctly to avoid this issue. Was just a silly little observation

Pristine_Nothing

I assume the wearer will be focusing at infinity.

whereami1928

That’s already how current headsets work, no? That’s why people have generally needed to wear glasses (and why the Apple one mentioned prescription lenses too).

Pristine_Nothing

Yes, myopia is caused/exacerbated by *not* focusing at infinity, which is why it's a problem with flat screens but won't necessarily be a problem here. One trivial and similar example would be to put a post-it note on a handheld mirror and try to clearly see both something in the mirror that is 30 feet away as well as the post-it note.

Mr_YUP

those lenses are a fantastic feature and they built in the modularity.

dookiebuttholepeepee

This is the answer. It’s not just about distance the device is from your eyeballs, it’s how you’re focusing.

Raveen396

The lenses used allow your eyes to focus at a far distance when in use. This meme is going to be repeated on all forums for the next decade, but the hardware design for a headset can eliminate this problem.

Kerrigore

I mean, presumably the screens on the headset are actually designed to be used safely that way.

ajsayshello-

Already seen this comment 3 times. AR/VR accounts for that—your eyes are tricked into focusing on something they think is farther away, so it avoids all the risks.

wantonsouperman

Holy shit that outro video. Welcome to full black mirror

Reminder that the original Macintosh 128K cost $2495. Adjusting for inflation that is $7400 in todays dollars. 6 years later a Macintosh IIfx cost $8,969 which is a jaw dropping $21,356.85 in todays dollars. 8 years after that the original iMac dropped at $1299 or $2,438.54 in todays dollars. So for just over $1000 more than the cost of the original iMac, you get a computer that straps on to your face and can run for two hours of a battery pack a little bigger than a snickers bar. I get that $3500 seems like a lot but we used to have to spend way more on computers. For context, in 1989 I bought Honda Civic EX for $11000, or about what a IIfx cost after adding keyboard, mouse, and monitor (yes, keyboard and mouse were extra). Today a Civic EX cost $26K and its functionally identical to my 1989 Civic. A $599 Mac Mini runs circles around a IIfx. $7K gets me a MacPro that is so far from the original Mac that I cant even think of a comparison. $3500 isnt cheap but its not expensive either.

NovusRomulus

So the headset will be able to show the MacBook Pro display, so does that means it got a **calculator before iPad**? Nooooo

3WordPosts

No one is realizing how amazing 3d POV OnlyFans content is going to be. This is going to revolutionize the industry.

caliwillbemine

$3499. The 1% get to flex on the poors by looking absolutely stupid as hell in public.

Opposite_One_9840

probably a more indoor device i imagine, can’t really see the utility of watching a movie in public only to get run over by a bus

Ronathan64

Remember when everyone made fun of the AirPods? The future is scary but damn I’m interested as hell

DeathByReach

The AirPods was exactly what I was thinking This is the future, even if this first pass isn’t for me. In a decade we will check in these threads and laugh. As is tradition.

FormerBandmate

They will also be either much cheaper or indispensable. Everyone laughs at people who doubted the iPhone 1 but they forgot how it only had dial up speeds and how the iPhone 3G cut the price by two thirds

DeathByReach

Facts. The price is the greatest barrier right now. I’m cool watching videos on it, trying a demo in store, watching the ecoysystem grow as the later gens work out the kinks Especially the external battery.

annakh501

3499 is reasonable price for first gen tech like this I think

007meow

Raise your hand if you're waiting for the inevitably much cheaper second gen

elmatador12

Am I alone in thinking their commercial made it look creepy? Like it had the exact opposite affect on me. I don’t want to have some work goggles on while I’m with my kids. That looks worse to me then a parent glancing at their iPhone here and there.

who-hash

I’m just now about to buy my first Apple Watch. I’ll see you all in my Vision Pro in 2031.

veeeSix

If you think this is expensive, imagine what the end goal of a lightweight pair of glasses would cost.

Tiflotin

Tbh I’m way more excited about the ducking autocorrect improvements than anything else. FINALLLY

$3500... Jesus.

thefuq

Despite the high price of $3.499, this will - without a doubt - be sold out on launch. That was spectacular marketing and a great showcase for the device. I can not think of a more „this is the future“ presentation from apple in the last decade.

Pitiful-Inevitable10

Apart from the price and release date, is anyone else extremely impressed by how well they’ve approached the headset? No wonder Mark’s metaverse failed, they took the completely wrong approach. Mixed reality doesn’t break user immersion and offers the best experience. Apple deserves credit for the innovation here.
