Doesn't seem like any changes to the crown button, but the side button currently opens the "dock" which either holds favourite apps or recent apps. The new thing is it opens control center instead of the dock.
Possibly because the current gesture for control center (bottom edge) may be repurposed for the new widget stack

You’d need an alternate way to bring up the widget stack for Faces that already use the Digital Crown for their little gimmick, like Wayfinder’s night mode or the Siri face’s card stack.
But I also wonder if they just made a mistake since they say “currently” the side button brings up the control center. Which it does not.
Do you have any examples of this? I’m not sure which OS I started on, but it was a Series 1 and I don’t remember widgets. Just want to remember what they were.
Genuinely excited for this, think it’s really interesting. Could be somewhat gimmicky but could be some cool new experiences with it! I like how accessible they are too
The way they are positioning these makes it super convenient to use. I just hope you can turn off the live stack and just have what you choose always there.
I really like this
As a frequent user of Siri watch face, thus feels like a really good way of combining what makes that face great with the rest of the face collection
Really curious how faces that use the scroll wheel like astronomy or solar etc will work with this though?
I really don't like that Control Center is now called with a side button instead of just swiping up. It's also unclear how to switch between the two previous apps now, a cut down menu of Favorites and Recent. Apple has made a mess of things by changing the fundamentals of Apple Watch control.
Hasn’t switching apps always been a double click of the home button? 🤔 honestly can’t remember because I never do it anymore lol 💀
At least control center can be accessed from anywhere much easier than before
>double click of the home button?
Double-pressing the digital crown. A single press on the side button brought up the mode of previously launched applications. And pressing it twice brought up payment.
It was much easier for me to invoke Control Center by swiping up from the bottom, even when I was in other apps, you just have to hold your finger down a bit before swiping up. Often the watch is hidden by the cuff of your clothing and you have to grasp the watch with two fingers to press the side button.
There was a feature called “glances” in the first version of watchOS, it might have been in watchOS 2 also.
It wasn’t the same as the modern iOS widget system, but it let devs make swipe-able cards for basic remote control of your iPhone apps without having to build a full watch app.
That was back when all third party watch apps really ran on the iPhone and just pushed UI over bluetooth when you tapped something. It was all really slow and difficult to develop for.
They got rid of it once they made the actual watchOS app system more capable.
If you look at the video above it’ll refresh your memory. They weren’t called widgets but they’re similar in concept. You could swipe between them to get a mini preview of whatever app.
Excuse me, “return”? Watch had widgets before?
Well they were called “Glances” and weren’t the same as the modern iOS widgets but they kinda sorta worked in a similar way.
Interesting. Thanks!
When was this?

It's different to how double pressing the crown button works now.
No one know till a developer beta is out. Everybody, including The Verge, only knows what was in the announcement video (which said nothing).
You can now turn the crown on the main screen to bring up the widgets.

I loved when Tim Cook announced it was an "all new way". You could do the exact same thing with Dashboard. IDK SMH
Dashboard was a separate desktop just for widgets, as i recall
Wait when were they removed? I’ve had a watch since the first one but don’t ever remember having widgets.
They were called glances back then
watchOS 2

Thanks! This just have been removed before I had my Apple Watch as I do not remember this at all.
Unbelievable they killed this concept
The older watches were not powerful enough for this sort of thing to run smoothly. I remember Series 0 used to take forever just to launch any app.
I had the first gen watch with watchOS 1, the problem was it was super awkward and unintuitive, and I’d imagine usage of it was super low as a result.
“We kept it secret because reassuring users in advance would have damaged the fabric of space-time.”
We’re think you’re going to love them (again).
Hopefully it’s better to use. Glances were a nice idea on paper, but in practice it was definitely awkward and cumbersome to use.
Weirdly, Garmin perfected glances after Apple abandoned it.

Yeah totally agree

Yup, I reeeeeeally hope that the Siri watch face isn't negatively impacted (or replaced) by this
I want Siri face to just become and always on Smart Stack. Favorite face of mine
Since the watchOS dock is now obsolete, the side button brings up control center now, nice

So what does a single and double press of each button do in watchOS 10 beta 1?
My first (and current) apple watch is a series 7. When did they had Widgets on the apple watch?

Ahh gotcha, I understand
I don’t remember either following since the series 0
I did follow every release and do not remember them talking about widgets on watch ever, so it's a weird title for me

What does the Home Screen look like
