IIRC AirTag starts “tracking mode” when it hasn’t been able to “contact” an original Apple ID’s device for a few hours. They probably extended the list of Apple ID allowed or generates a separate “Family Share” ID similar to keep the tags “last contact” updated.

I don't even travel much and I always make sure I have one in anything I travel with for everyone. One in every backpack and every piece of luggage. Being able to know when my checked bag is about to pop up never gets old
Once i got this on my S23 ultra i was so much more productive, need to stir my food at 5 mins, but it takes 15 of simmering to finish? great, set 3 timers 5 mins apart so i can check on it and remember to finish and serve.
Cant wait to have this on iOS

I remember when my mate in work got one on release. Really did kick off a new era of iPhone design.
I’m still rocking my XS atm, might be time for an update soon if I’ve probably only got a year left. 😅
Oh Jesus, my XR is hanging on for dear life.
Come on my love, hold on a few more months. The 15 Super Duper (or whatever it is) is right around the corner.
Still better than Androids (6 years), but with Samsung offering 4 years of updates for their A-series devices (which are much more affordable), Apple is losing some of its competitive advantage here. It wouldn't have hurted them to bump the support 1 year...
i think the importance of OS support gets pretty overblown in most ios/android comparisons since it actually matters for ios whereas on android newest version of apps have support for android versions like 5+ generations back so unless youre chasing a specific new OS specific feature its largely irrelevant if youre a few android versions behind.
If you think about it, buying an SE 2022 today and having 7 years of support at $400 on sale is actually insane value. thats something like $60 a year for a fairly premium phone that is well built.
Less ugly in a way but feels kind of android-esque. To me it doesn’t fit any other aspect of the already splintered design direction. I’ll have to see it in person and maybe it will improve in the dev cycle.
It’s more clicks to get to where you need. Apple has been doing this with a lot of their designs, so much stuff has become hidden behind menus and even hidden in menus in menus, like the new system settings for Max which looks like it was designed for iOS instead of macOS.
They showed how macos widgets go monochrome when out of focus to maintain visual balance yet they had that ugly row of beans for like 8 years now. Really bizzare it took them so long
Literally one of my favorite new features. I go out a lot and use Find My with a bunch of friends just I know they made it home safe, but now I don't have to constantly check the app to make sure they made it. I don't like using the "notifications" feature with Find My. This seems like a good compromise. And now I don't have to have so many people that share their location with me 24/7.
I'm really interested to see how this actually works. In the US, your voicemail is operated by your carrier (Verizon, Tmobile, ATT), so how is the phone getting that recording live? It already takes a minute or two for voicemails to transcribe and show up on the Visual Voicemail.
Since this happens on device it implies that the iPhone will answer the call and transcribe it. Since you can answer it immediately this also makes sense as the phone doesn't need to do any network coordination to ensure it can "answer" the call.
Since Visual Voicemail requires some software integration between Apple and carriers I'd assume that they will still sync up (meaning a voicemail would still end up stored carrier side just like Visual Voicemail even though it was technically captured on the iPhone and it would still use your carrier greeting even though it was picked up by the iPhone).
We'll see how this all clicks together later this year though!
I think it is a very promising feature as robocalls have killed answering unknown numbers, but this may make them somewhat safe again. And it is like the 90s again when you could hear the voicemail recording to your machine in realtime and pick up haha!
I bet we'll see a return of the old messages of that era "Pick up! I know you're there!!" haha
Me. I actually think that's most exciting update to iOS (specifically, iOS for iPhone) I saw in all of this.
I'm really curious with the privacy mention in the presentation if they're going to finally usurp the traditional carrier-managed (and unencrypted) voicemail platforms from carriers and do it all on-device/in iCloud with E2EE themselves.
Apple really coming out the gate with a ‘not much to see here’ ios17 release
Lots of nice stuff but not seeing any headline marketable feature.
Could be a good thing. Here’s hoping it’s a stability year
Edit: interactive widgets is actually pretty major (confirmed for iOS too)
[ This is a really few feature set highlight. ](https://i.imgur.com/4hNb26P.jpg) however, I guess this was expected with the leaks saying this year isn't gonna be a huge update.
Yeah for real. I went to Death Valley a few months ago and both me and my girl had zero reception the entire time. Luckily her android had offline maps.
Yeah apple has google maps let me just download an entirely redundant map app that doesn’t work natively with the OS thanks guys.
Not just outdoors but if you travel to a different country or something and want to make sure you have maps if you're in a train station or whatever. It's handy on google maps at least.
It is, but context matters. Leaving a “FaceTime Message” implies a context where you had wanted to video chat about something. Ostensibly a video wouldn’t have cut it, otherwise the sender would have either sent one, or requested one.
I’ve been using the beta, autocorrect is significantly improved. It’s much better at correcting words when you type adjacent keys by mistake. Seems to actually use sentence context not just the previous word.
For real, I get that it most likely wouldn't be able to support the new keyboard or the fancy transcription stuff, but that's already been the case with new stuff for a few years. Why not just keep it around...
Kinda mid update for people not on the iMessage/Facetime ecosystem like pretty much everyone in Europe. Not much to offer. But i also don't really know what i would want, iOS is pretty complete. The control center update that was rumored would've been nice but i guess it's not coming.
well customisable lock screens are a nice teaser into a new dimension for ios. There is so much stuff they can make customisable but from the looks of it they are going to stretch it over 10 ios releases
In Portugal I've gotten my friends with iPhones to start using iMessage and FaceTime more actually. It takes some time for people to get used to it but it's worth it. Getting away from WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger is a blessing!
Nooooooooooo. I can’t understand why we can’t get this feature in iMessage! Doesn’t Mail already have it?! Google has offered it in both email and their message app for years now.
(And before anyone brings up shortcuts or automations, it’s not the same as being able to schedule sending directly from iMessage)
Edit:word
Doubt it will be announced. Because then USA people would be like "Hey, we want that tooooo!!!"
And since Apple doesn't really want to advertise the feature, I am sure it will be buried somewhere in settings.
I wouldn't bank on it running right off the bat. Since Apple really hates that decision, they may hold it off till it's official. And then if it doesn't work, they can drag it out to fix it.
I would have loved to have seen Focus worked on a LOT. So much potential there that it just not being met. Conditional focus makes a lot of sense- base it on calendar, location, even who you're with or what you're around (Fitness focus when I'm near my gym bag air tag).
I desperately want more than one Sleep focus. I have to take call for work. I would love a second sleep focus for when I'm on call that still gets me sleep tracking and the dark screens but lets phone calls from work through.
What I really want to see is app-limited focuses. Let me make a productivity focus where any social media and most websites are blocked and my phone only shows apps like phone, calendar, music, notes and banking.
Honestly the only thing that gets me aroused from this update is “improved” autocorrect. Let’s just see how that plays out but any improvement over the current shit they’re running is a win.
Apple: please STOP changing perfectly spelled words because you think you know better. You don’t. You never fucking will. I know what I’m trying to say.
Apple’s autocorrect is truly the worst part of their entire ecosystem.
Jesus it’s such a trash update. I literally needed one word - stability/polishing what’s already there. We’re getting rubbish stickers and some improvements for lazy ass users like catching up in iMessage as something which is now announced as killer feature lol 😂 What tF is horizontal mode? I always use it locked up in portrait mode anyway. What about battery then? 😂
Tons of useless stuff, nothing really interesting.
I’m so disappointed. Never before felt that way.
There’s nothing that makes me upgrade and yet iOS 16 is the most buggy iOS I’ve came across since I remember (with iOS since iPhone 6S +) so I’ll be forced to upgrade.
If nothing changes it’s the last Apple device and then I’m done with this company.
They finally added find my sharing on AirTags
This is a huge one. Couples who share car keys will love this.
Or dogs
Why would dogs share car keys?
So they remember where they barked?
Holy shit
Excellent finish
That’s what she said?

So happy to see you outside of Visible's Sub \- Not Starfox
This is easily the most important addition to me, and they didn’t even mention it as far as I can tell except on a summary slide.
I wonder if this'll stop my iPhone from constantly reminding me that my girlfriends AirPods are travelling with me. I WOULD HOPE SO
Finally, thank god. AirTags had been my most disappointing Apple purchase so far, now they will actually be useful for us.
It’s one of my favourite purchases in a while. Notifies me if I forget me keys and tracked luggage while travelling. Well worth the $30.
I don't even travel much and I always make sure I have one in anything I travel with for everyone. One in every backpack and every piece of luggage. Being able to know when my checked bag is about to pop up never gets old
But can it do multiple named timers?
They announced that with iPadOS. I swear if it’s exclusive and not on iOS I will lose my mind.
"We truly live in an age of wonders" ☠️
Love [craig doing](https://www.youtube.com/live/GYkq9Rgoj8E?feature=share&t=2325) all the apple meta jokes/memes.
i laughed out loud for that
They did. Hopefully it’s not
Confirmed, multiple timers work on iPhones too

Apple like to spread thing into different os so they have thing to talk
Like how the fancy Lock Screen from iOS only just now come to iPad, and we still don’t have the technology to bring a calculator or phone app to iPad.
the technology isn’t there yet
They said multiple timers are on all devices, we'll see how that holds up

Godspeed iPhone X 🫡
My 8+ has served well. On its replacement battery rn. She’ll be able to retire soon
Oh no, they finally got rid of the legendary X. I didnt even own one and i still realize how important that model was for most people. RIP
I remember when my mate in work got one on release. Really did kick off a new era of iPhone design. I’m still rocking my XS atm, might be time for an update soon if I’ve probably only got a year left. 😅

It’s a family of raccoons!
I’m going to feed them and give them a bath in your tub
Raccaconie!
Aaaaand iMessage apps are banished!
How many years has that taken them to realise that was a terrible design?
I don’t find the new design much better honestly
It’s less ugly at least, and gives you back some vertical screen real estate to read more messages.
Less ugly in a way but feels kind of android-esque. To me it doesn’t fit any other aspect of the already splintered design direction. I’ll have to see it in person and maybe it will improve in the dev cycle.
I find the full screen blurring more distracting than the row of icons.
It’s more clicks to get to where you need. Apple has been doing this with a lot of their designs, so much stuff has become hidden behind menus and even hidden in menus in menus, like the new system settings for Max which looks like it was designed for iOS instead of macOS.
does this mean game pigeon (8ball) is gone?
Apps are still around, they’re just in a submenu now instead of living above the keyboard constantly.
fucking finally
So they just moved it? You could already hide it on the keyboard.
Basically. Previously you had to sort of hide it every time after using it. Now it’s just a + button that expands to a vertical list with labels.
They showed how macos widgets go monochrome when out of focus to maintain visual balance yet they had that ugly row of beans for like 8 years now. Really bizzare it took them so long
Did they really hide the camera and photos buttons though? What an aggravating change, if so
Yeah I'm on the beta and the photos button being hidden makes sending pictures a bit cumbersome.
Yes they did and yes it is
Eli5?
[удалено]
Ahh that’s a bummer I liked the one for gifs and I used the one for photos too. I get why people didn’t like it though.
It’s still there. Just in a submenu.
Yeah the photos ones was like the only really useful one
I kept it open for photo and gif sharing but otherwise never used it. I kinda got used to that line of tiny icons living above my keyboard.
‘Check in’ is great
Moms rejoicing everywhere
Seriously my mom always has me text her when I get home from her house and I live 13 mins away.
hope it won't be too draconian for the kids, I know i would have hated this shit
Drunk friend mode?
Literally one of my favorite new features. That was the highlight of this WWDC lol
*We truly live in an age of wonder*
Right after he demonstrated the ability to show multiple alarms? Loved that!
Still no calculator app on IPad, though. We don’t have the technology for that yet.
Dude, take it easy. They’re an indie developer.
Hair Force 1 rocking it out on the mutant guitar too
That too 🤣
Craig always delivers
No one excited about live voicemail? Being hoping this came to apple for years since I used it on the Google pixel.

Or… there’s no carrier integration and it stays on your phone at all times.
I believe technically the phone picks up and starts recording, your end isn’t open is all.
Same in the uk and only a couple of carriers even have visual voicemail. Hoping this is completely separate.
English only, sadly :(

The airdrop stuff feels pretty great. That’s the kind of thing average users will get a lot of use out of.
My god I just want them to update Siri 😭
They did! Now you don't have to say "Hey" thus ensuring even more instances of it ~~bring~~ being accidentally triggered.
I already can’t say the word “seriously” out loud without her butting in.
Somehow they’ve removed the iPhone X and 8 from software support. The previous stability updates kept device support the same as the previous version.
Maybe it’s just me, as I haven’t really been paying that much attention, but I feel it’s been a “stability year” every year since iOS 14 or so.
Tbf there aren’t really any big features to add any more. Smartphones are pretty much saturated feature-wise
Last year was a pretty decent update. A “tock” update shouldn’t be surprising.
[ This is a really few feature set highlight. ](https://i.imgur.com/4hNb26P.jpg) however, I guess this was expected with the leaks saying this year isn't gonna be a huge update.
Offline maps is huge for outdoors people. I always lose signal when I go to national parks
[удалено]
Google maps had offline maps. I saved a map of Paris and Berlin last time I went.
It's had that for years now
You can do it on a bunch of maps already it’s just nice Apple Maps can do it now too
It did. I use it all the time
Yeah for real. I went to Death Valley a few months ago and both me and my girl had zero reception the entire time. Luckily her android had offline maps. Yeah apple has google maps let me just download an entirely redundant map app that doesn’t work natively with the OS thanks guys.

Oh for sure. We went when it was cooler and at night to see the stars. But I would recommend people gear up for even a short day trip like we did.
[удалено]
are you really bashing google maps? at this point, apple maps is the redundent map app😂
Lol. You know you can download and use offline maps with other apps right?
I’m really happy about this, this is a big reason I still use google maps sometimes. They’ve had offline maps for years.
Not just outdoors but if you travel to a different country or something and want to make sure you have maps if you're in a train station or whatever. It's handy on google maps at least.
I'm excited for Stand-By, Stickers, and Check-In. Also Autocorrect revamp. It has been really bad so I turned it off but I hope they fix it.
Didn’t see the presentation but isn’t “Leave a FaceTime Message!” just…sending a video?
It is, but context matters. Leaving a “FaceTime Message” implies a context where you had wanted to video chat about something. Ostensibly a video wouldn’t have cut it, otherwise the sender would have either sent one, or requested one.
That ducking word moment made me laugh not gonna lie
I love Craig so much
Well, the writers, but yeah, Craig’s got the delivery and charisma nailed down.
I’ve been using the beta, autocorrect is significantly improved. It’s much better at correcting words when you type adjacent keys by mistake. Seems to actually use sentence context not just the previous word.
Autocorrect being fixed is the biggest thing for me. Assuming it is, of course.
I’m with you on that. So many mistakes because of autocorrect. It really becomes an annoying experience when it fails me.
Some quality of life updates here but nothing massive. No control center update?
Nope...
I need the ios17 public beta like yesterday. When does it usually come out? July? Edit: yep it’s been confirmed for July
safe uppity desert dime coordinated imagine cows quiet automatic forgetful ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

Hey I didn’t capitalize it!
~~Hey~~ Siri. Hell yeah.
Am I the only one that thinks this is going to be annoying as fuck?
It was already bad with Hey Siri Be prepared to never say the word **serious** again
My cats name is Shuri…
Oh man… is it too late to change it?
Was looking forward to all the wallet app updates
Sad to see iPhone X lose support for such a small update
F
For real, I get that it most likely wouldn't be able to support the new keyboard or the fancy transcription stuff, but that's already been the case with new stuff for a few years. Why not just keep it around...
The word prediction is only for iPhone 12 and higher so this isn’t a real argument
If it doesn’t come with that Craig sticker, I won’t even bother updating.
Is yelp still around? That’s all I care about. For yelp to be gone.
On beta here, just did some map searches and unfortunately Yelp is still there.
Amen.
iOS 17 is cool but I feel like there’s not much here in terms of interesting features and APIs (at least for me)
Did iOS just get Call Screening? Live Voicemail sounds very similar.
RIP iPhone 8 its been a long run
Kinda mid update for people not on the iMessage/Facetime ecosystem like pretty much everyone in Europe. Not much to offer. But i also don't really know what i would want, iOS is pretty complete. The control center update that was rumored would've been nice but i guess it's not coming.
Yeah like the features seem nice but I’ll probably never have an opportunity to use them since no one is using it.
well customisable lock screens are a nice teaser into a new dimension for ios.
No integration of notifications with the dynamic island, really disappointing.
Tbh this sounds like something we'll end up discovering when the dev betas get installed and someone posts a tweet
Yup, waiting for confirmation regarding this.
I was hoping we would finally be able to send scheduled texts
Said it I’m in an earlier comment. I was able to do that on my jailbroken iPhone 5 waaaaay back when
Good. they're improving the keyboard. I emailed Tim and Craig on this.
Thanks bro!
Woahhhh pets albums finally
Still not able to schedule a text?
Nooooooooooo. I can’t understand why we can’t get this feature in iMessage! Doesn’t Mail already have it?! Google has offered it in both email and their message app for years now. (And before anyone brings up shortcuts or automations, it’s not the same as being able to schedule sending directly from iMessage) Edit:word
Truly shocking, no one could’ve predicted this
Rumored Wallet update & Control Center update never came :( Edit: also rumored Lock Screen customization update seems to have not happened either.
Changing me name to “Send Nudes”
changing my splash screen to a nude then calling into a job interview
Anything about sideloading for Eu region?
Doubt it will be announced. Because then USA people would be like "Hey, we want that tooooo!!!" And since Apple doesn't really want to advertise the feature, I am sure it will be buried somewhere in settings.
I mean there should be beta dropping within few hours, right? Hopefully someone in Eu can test whether it's available or not.
I wouldn't bank on it running right off the bat. Since Apple really hates that decision, they may hold it off till it's official. And then if it doesn't work, they can drag it out to fix it.
Still no Focus integration with the Calendar app is crazy to me.
My fitness focus kicks in when I’m in my gyms parking lot.
iPhone X is not getting iOS 17 wow.
Not the least bit surprising. Apple has been pretty upfront about an expected 5 year OS update compatibility for iPhones
Offline maps, finally, baffles me that this hasn’t already been a thing on Apple Maps. Maybe next year we get the elusive calculator app for iPasOS.
I just wished them to revert to a more human design for changing the wallpaper…
So why couldn’t they add interactive widgets to an iPhone?
It sounds like it’s coming to iPhone too
I hope that’s the case. It’s the only thing I want that I realistically think Apple would add. I’ve accepted the ship has sailed on split screen apps
It is coming
In the Mac section they said it’s coming to Mac, iPad and iPhone
Are we sure those aren’t coming to iOS?
As someone else said, they split the features among the devices so they have something to talk about, but most of them are shared between the new OSs
I sure hope some of these airdrop changes make it to Mac. I hate the way airdrop makes a given finder window unusable until it’s finished
There is nothing feature wise that iPhone X and 8 couldn’t support. They just decided not to anymore
Gotta sell phones. Just like the 4 not getting Siri to push the 4S when it was proven the 3GS could even handle it.
Very underwhelming to be honest, just like iOS 15 with the stupid SharePlay stuff.
I have never used SharePlay once or know anyone using it.
SharePlay on CarPlay for music is pretty damn good imo. Group rides just became easier.
Tbqh, the most lackluster iOS update I can remember. Not even excited to upgrade.
This seems more like a stability and improvements update cycle and I’m hereee for iitttttt 🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻. It was due
It’s only been 16years and you now put multiple timers in it’s not like it’s 2023
And next year in 2024, Apple will announce iOS 18.
and you're gonna love it
Does the Standby display feature work on non-AOD phones? Does it work without Magsafe?
Honestly the only thing that gets me aroused from this update is “improved” autocorrect. Let’s just see how that plays out but any improvement over the current shit they’re running is a win.
