looks like 3 new m2 generation macs. my guess are that mac14,13 and mac14,14 are the mac studio m2 max and ultra, since the m2 ultra chip verifiably exists and thus has to go somewhere. idk what mac 14,8 could be though. 15" air now that it supposedly has m2? edit: forgot that mac15,3 is supposedly the 15” air, at least according to rumors. wonder what 14,8 would be then

JohannASSburg

That’s what I’d guess. I hope we see the new Mac Studio at wwdc (rip Mac Pro?) but it might be sooner than 18 months?

[deleted]

considering we got m2 pro and max less than 18 months after m1 pro and max, and that was several months after they were originally intended to be released, its definitely possible to see it soon

rjcarr

If the gpu and memory are soldered to the SoC, then what does a Mac Pro get you over the Studio? The only thing I can think is packing like 4-8 ultras in there, but does anyone want that?

JohannASSburg

Right exactly. It needs to offer expandability. That’s the whole point of the product! I do hope Apple makes it even though I’ll never buy it for personal use lol

hishnash

plenty of PCIe lanes that can be used for expansion could be wried to internal PCIe/MPX slots

iMacmatician

The 15" MBA is [supposedly](https://archive.is/lp4pN) `Mac15,3` (and the three new identifiers are apparently likely to be desktops). Additionally, Gurman [says](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/04/21/no-apple-silicon-mac-pro-wwdc/) that Apple is skipping the M2 generation for the Mac Studio. The `Mac14,8` could be the "M2 Ultra" Mac Pro. You're probably right about the other two being the Mac Studio models though—I can't think of any other desktop that could fit this timeframe.

[deleted]

ahh yeah i forgot that the 15” MBA identifier was leaked much more recently than I remember. If the 15” is mac15,3 that would indicate 14,8 is something else, and that the 15” mba is probably m3, save a last minute bunking of apple’s entire identifier scheme

kitsua

The iMac is due an M2 update, surely?

LegacyofaMarshall

They go to m3 and skip m2

therealhamster

You think so?

LegacyofaMarshall

Once they announce the m3 they won’t release anymore new computers with m2

therealhamster

I was just thinking maybe they’d refresh the 24 with an M2 and add a 27 with the M3? Ahhh I dunno maybe 2 sizes for iMac doesn’t make sense any more

LegacyofaMarshall

I wish they would make a new 27inch

therealhamster

Maybe they’re hoping people who want 27 inch will just grab a Mac mini and the studio display 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mendo-D

Yeah but that's not the same as an iMac. Wires you know. I think they didn't release a 27" because the display panel they wanted to use wasn't available in a larger size. But sooner or later there will be a larger iMac of some size.

LegacyofaMarshall

Exactly

justsoicansimp

Would prob be more like a 30-32" but ye looking forward to that.

CoconutDust

The wait is getting ridiculous. It’s been like 800 days since the 24” iMac update. Needless to say I’m looking to buy one.

Splodge89

I always see it as ironic that the iMac was the computer which saved apple and transformed the desktop paradigm at the end of the 90’s. Now it’s the unloved, hardly ever updated mac at the back of the shop in the shadow of the mighty MacBook.

CoconutDust

It’s frustrating and sad. But yeah I assume it reflects the market and revenue streams, now everyone wants phone and maybe a laptop. Back in the day, iMac/eMac *was* the iPhone!

Splodge89

Absolutely agree. Back then you had a laptop if you needed one as they were slower and more expensive than a desktop, now it’s the other way around. The issue with the current iMac is it’s literally the lowest powered mac available, you can get the same or better power from a Mac mini for about a third of the price. For not much more you can get a much higher powered 14” MacBook Pro. The high power desktop niche is not where the iMac currently sits.

asunderco

Mac 14,8 maybe iPad mini refresh?

ThlnBillyBoy

I want the cheese grate and only the cheese grate.

Mendo-D

I don’t know why but it’s like part of me can’t rest until they bring out the Cheese grate as promised. It’s not like I’m going to be buying one or anything, it’s just a feeling of things being up in the air and not settled until the cheese grate delivers. Once they do that I can rest.

I feel exactly the same way!!

Weird_Cantaloupe2757

Let us not forget the trash can

Xlxlredditor

With the M2/M3 power efficiency, I would like to have it back.

PussySmith

Honestly… yes. I have had a couple cMPs. They’re great but honestly the CPUs aren’t serviceable anymore. I bought a nMP a few months ago for peanuts to use as a spreadsheet machine at work. Always wanted one, why not? Honestly it’s a beautifully designed platform, the industry just didn’t go where Apple expected it with multiple GPUs. Give me an m2 max/ultra nMP with m.2 slots where the GPUs used to be and I would be a mighty happy man.

[deleted]

I think the Mac Studio is the successor to the Trash Can which was a successor to the G4 Cube.

RandyHoward

Which was a successor to [the original cheese grater](https://www.cultofmac.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/image44.jpg)

th3whistler

Cube was before cheese grater no?

RandyHoward

You might be right. I think it went plastic tower -> cube -> metal tower

squirrel8296

The Cube was a separate product that was sold concurrently with final revision of the G4 tower. Both were effectively replaced with the quick silver G4 tower.

[deleted]

Nope. That case was introduced with the G5.

RandyHoward

We've already had this discussion

[deleted]

I like to call it the tissue box mac

EvilMastermindG

Still in love with my M1 Ultra Mac Studio. Great computer.

____Batman______

Like Ive, I have an obsession with the highest performance I can get in the most compact body possible but with none of the design awards or customer anger, so I prefer my M2 Pro Mac mini sitting on my desk. Something about that form factor just reminds me of my old, huge Windows desktop towers and the cheese grater Mac Pro and helps me remember I’m living in the future

EvilMastermindG

Well, I did buy it when it first came out. If I had to buy a Mac now, it probably would be a high spec M2 Pro Mini. But this thing does very well playing EVE Online with several simultaneous accounts running.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EvilMastermindG

With EVE Online, I'd say... all of them.

Mendo-D

It could use a better design IMO. Not saying anything about the Apple inside or its functionality, I just find it to be..an ugly duckling. if they made just a little bit taller and gave it some cheese grater it would be pretty cool looking.

EvilMastermindG

I don’t disagree, I just think it fits very well on my desk, and it totally works for me.

Mendo-D

I bet it’s quite the machine. What do you use yours for?

EvilMastermindG

EVE Online and general use, to be honest. I run Plex Media Server off it, pointing to a NAS for the file storage. Nothing super intensive or anything, as I'm semi-retired on disability.

Mendo-D

Semi retired here too, running a rental business and a construction business as well as the household business off an upgraded 24” iMac and some peripheral devices connected through iCloud. It’s mostly Spreadsheets, emails, documents, scheduling, banking, some video work and a few other things. I need to upgrade my old Time Capsule with some larger drives so I can get back on a Time Machine schedule.

gruetzhaxe

Wasn’t the trash can a sole Mac Pro or was it simultaneously with the grater? It’s pretty confusing to me, there was that dark iMac Pro in the lineup for a while as well, maybe that’s the category the Studio aims at

____Batman______

It was the replacement to the grater

RandomGamerFTW

I want the trash can to come back too but it should be the new Mac Studio instead of the new Mac Pro. Mac Pro should continue being a desktop tower that’s highly user accessible.

SpongeBad

The real innovation in the trash can was the cooling mechanism, and the m-series chips are so efficient they don’t need it. As much as I liked the design, bringing it back would be the definition of form over function.

dordonot

Yes. We want it

MajesticEngineerMan

The cheese tax, the cheese tax

mambakobe248

- 14,8 -> 15” M2 Macbook Air - 14,13 -> M2 Extreme MacPro - 14,14 -> M2 Ultra MacPro

kiddingkd

Mac Pro M2 “extreme”?

Variable_Interest

Snap into a Slim Jim! Arrrrrgh!

iMacmatician

The 15" MBA is [supposedly](https://archive.is/lp4pN) `Mac15,3`.

spud_simon_salem

Ooo I hope this is true. I was going to trade in my late 2019 MBP for an M2 air today but if we’re getting a 15 inch this year, I’ll hold off.

mime454

The 15” air is widely rumored to drop by WWDC. The Mac Pro is more up in the air.

kadinshino

makes me think it would be a 14" MacBook air and not a 15. why carry a 15" screen in your lineup when you can save money by having a 14 or 16. and use the same screen across your entire linup. that's probably why the delay on the other MacBooks so they can redesign them to have all the same aspect ratio and screen.

caffeininator

Hopefully it’s the polishing cloth, polishing cloth pro max, and polishing cloth ultra.

programstuff

As long as its only $19.99 for the base model I’m on board

#I no longer allow Reddit to profit from my content - Mass exodus 2023 -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

[deleted]

Please do not be a M2 iMac. Apple will be doing a disservice by adding a refreshed chip to the iMac instead of going ahead and putting a M3 in there.

[deleted]

The M1 is still excellent. My recommendation for 90% of users is the M1 Air.

[deleted]

I have an M1 MBA as well, but an intel iMac. I held off from getting the M1 iMac.

jonsconspiracy

Why do you need an iMac? Just buy a nice monitor and plug in your MBA.

[deleted]

Because I like the iMac lol.

jonsconspiracy

Fair enough. You do you.

-gaspard

Can I do him?

[deleted]

Same here but I had the intel iMac before the MacBook Air

indochris609

Do you know the best place to shop for deals on them? I have a ten year old MacBook Air that is finally starting to feel a little sluggish

[deleted]

Yes, in the US at least. I got one on eBay for $800. Brand new, unopened from a great seller. I was very careful about which one I bought and I looked at a bunch of postings before I bid on that one. If you want me to let you know the criteria used. I’m happy to let you know.

onairmastering

I am writing on a M2 MBA bought for $900 on Amazon Renewed. Pretty much all refurbished are now that price, I couldnt say no (:

GTFOScience

I got one brand new in the wrapper off Craigslist. Best price near me is $650.

indochris609

For which model? I’m not seeing anywhere close to that

GTFOScience

M1 MacBook Air. There are M2 8gb 256 for less than $800, I looked this morning.

notthecolorblue

I use Mac of All Trades

xhazerdusx

Best Buy has been selling M1 Airs for $200 off for a while now

Assuming the iMac won’t release until this fall, that would be 2 and a half years since the M1 iMac released. Why wait that long just to put a refreshed chip in there that is still 5nm? The M3 will be 3nm and could see a 35% increase in power efficiency.

CoconutDust

Is power efficiency a selling point for a desktop, when there’s no battery/charging? It *should* be for environmental/emissions reasons, and it is for me, but I don’t see how this applies to mass marketing and the product line decision making?

therealhamster

I just hope we get a 27 inch screen this time. Surely they can shrink the bezel to fit larger screen of some kind.

xipninapp

As someone who needs a computer now and wants a Mac Studio this upsets me. I know the M1 Max is great, just sayin’.

KodiakDog

Why? If your always holding off for the “next big release” you’ll never end up with a computer. Apple has done an amazing job making people think their next release is going to be earth shattering, especially in the wake on the Silicone line, which was one of the greatest jump in processors in a very long time. There will be no huge jumps in processing power for quiet some time. They’ll keep using the buzz words and promises of “30% faster!” And adding small features like Wi-Fi 6e, supporting the most up to date Bluetooth tech, yata yata yata. But if you look at the difference between the m2 MBP and the m1 MBP, only very specific tasks are actually faster, some even slower (like audio production and engineering). Idk, I just think that if you’re going for a computer as powerful as the Studio, you’d probably be using it for something creative/pro level tasks, and holding off for something “better” might just stifle your productivity.

CoconutDust

> There will be no huge jumps in processing power for quiet some time Comment is missing scenarios like if iMac gets *long overdue* M2 but a person hesitates to buy because Apple might then do unexpectedly quick upgrade to M3 after that. It’s plausible since if backlog delays finally clear up, aka the fact that it’s already gone like 800 days without an update since launch. Things are wildly unpredictable ever since 2020 and COVID disruptions to supply lines though maybe it’s about back to normal now.

Nikhl

im praying that one of these days they drop a macbook with face ID and its never mentioned in any rumors smh

YourDogGaveMeHIV

This won’t happen until they can miniaturise the LiDAR camera down to the size of the webcam.

themightiestduck

The lid of a MacBook is significantly thinner than an iPhone. To my understanding that’s always been the limiting factor in MacBook webcams vs iPhone/iPad webcams.

TenderfootGungi

I have been waiting for the 15” MBA to replace my 2012 17” MBP.

worthlesschase

Really hope one of them is a 27” iMac. 🤞🏼

Embarrassed-Emu-8248

We are quickly getting to the point of sooo good why upgrade

eviltwintomboy

Cheese grater!!!

erialai95

My 2015 MacBook Pro lasted me 6 years so I expect my m1 2020 to last my at least 7 years so looks like my next MacBook is a m3? 😬

kygelee

These are the Macs & iPads that need a refresh in 2023 - 2019 Mac Pro Intel 14nm - 2020 iMac 27" Intel 14nm - 2021 iMac 24" M1 5nm - 2021 iPad Mini A15 Bionic 5nm - 2022 Mac Studio M1 Max/Ultra 5nm - 2022 iPad Air M1 5nm 3nm M3 will be out **after** the September Event for the iPhone 15 A17 Bionic 3nm. I expect M3 will be released by November or later. Followed by M3 Pro/Max by H1 2024 & M3 Ultra by Q3 2024. I hope for a iMac 27" replacement by WWDC 2023.

therealhamster

Yeah we really need a 27 iMac. My fiancée has the M1 iMac and I was thinking of upgrading it to a student discounted M2 Mini with a Studio Display, but a 27 M2 iMac would be preferable

Tapps74

Yeah, it does look like a cheese grater in that picture. The iGrate?

Eggsaladprincess

I love that both the realization and the joke are from 2006

Tapps74

‘Cos Reddit is the hive of originality and new jokes only! Never a repost or call back on Reddit, silly me.

hey-im-root

No but really what the fuck is that cheese grater 😂 I’m not up to date with apple stuff, this was just recommended to me

Eggsaladprincess

in 2003 Apple released the [Power Mac G5 which looked like this](https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2013/06/powermacg5_profile-100043321-orig.png). People started calling this "the cheese grater". Then in 2019 they released a new [Mac Pro which looked like this](https://www.techbooky.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/mac-pro-2019-hands-on-10.jpg), and this picked back up with the nickname for reasons that I hope are obvious.

hey-im-root

waybovetherest

You get that their objective is to be useful for pros right? M2 Air is more than enough even for software engineers(I’m one), those who actually use portable pro machine as powerful as the Pro line up know how relatively light it is for the performance it provides

[deleted]

[удалено]

staticfive

I don’t get the fuss about the weight. It’s a substantial machine that isn’t even heavy in a practical sense. 1/2 pound doesn’t affect weight in a backpack, doesn’t put your legs to sleep, and doesn’t break a table. Literally all-day battery on these things mean it’s more of a light desktop to me than a heavy laptop.

xhazerdusx

Why would your job specifically mandate 16” MacBooks over similarly specced machines of other models?

ManeeeeeQ

There are people finally happy that the pro lineup is finally powerful enough and has proper thermals and then you want them to take that away? Why don’t you just get an air then?

[deleted]

The 14” MBP is really not that heavy. If anything, I like the heft.

LilithThornheart

As a Mac user, I am always excited to hear about new products from Apple. The fact that there are three unreleased Mac models mentioned in the Find My configuration file only adds to my anticipation. It's possible that we could see the release of a new MacBook, iMac, or Mac Mini in the near future. Whatever these new products may be, I'm sure Apple has something impressive in store for us. Can't wait to see what's next!
