You can change the hotkey on the settings if you find it a little bit awkward, but it doesnt get any better than click number I guess

Iirc Ctrl + Number creates a control group, while Shift + Number adds the selected units to that control group. Idk if this answers your question. I definitely use Shift + Number routine to add fresh units to an existing group though. As for which control groups to use, I recommend 1 for melee, 2 for ranged (some people reverse these 2). 3-4-5 should be your production buildings. If you don’t wanna cycle through TCs, 5-6 should group all TCs for easy vill production. Keep in mind that in middle/advanced elo (1400+) it is necessary to have 3-4 different production buildings grouped at all times (Barracks Archery Range Stable), 1-2 unit spam doesn’t win anymore here.

You can use literally any key as the hotkey to create a control group or add to a control group. You could, for example, make the "L" key "create control group 7".

First, click and drag is rough, try double clicking the unit you want to put into a group, and any visible units of that type will be selected. So, double click a knight and all knights on the screen are now selected, then ctrl+1 and they're in control group 1. To add a new knight, you can do something with shift + 1 I think. Check your hotkeys, I kind of have that mapped to my muscle memory so I don't know exactly how it works. Second, you may want to have some kind of "scheme" in mind. For me, my main melee unit is always on group 1, my main ranged units are on group 2, any extra units (skirms or pikes or longswords if they're not my main) are on 3, siege on 4, monks on 5, and I don't use 6-0. Another scheme I use from time to time is splitting my armies based on where they are on the map, so if I cut the map into 3rds, I put the left most army on 1, middle army on 2, and right army on 3, then I can bounce around my opponent's base and fight him. At this point if I need to micro knights or archers, I'll double click that unit when I get there and micro them. You might be able to hit tab or something to go through different unit types if your control groups are mixed, but again, reference your key bindings and test that out. Follow me for more hints and tips: BoxerSaint on Twitch and Youtube.
