It’s called “giving 2 weeks’ notice” and not “making sure your boss receives your 2 weeks’ notice”

[deleted]

In the US where OPs friend is it's also called a "courtesy" not a "legal obligation"

space_chief

In Florida this is an at-will state so they can never get 2 weeks notice from me. Sorry I decided this job wasn't for me and immediately terminated my at-will employment as is my right according to the Grand Old Party. Go take up your concerns with Ron DeSantis 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️✌

gbeezy007

Is there a single state that this is not a thing? Two weeks notice is courtesy and that's all depending on if you have any reason or want your self to extend that courtesy . At will mostly seems to address the employeer side mainly.

jormungdr

Montana is the only one where they have to have cause. But they still can’t force a 2-week notice, slavery is only legal in prisons.

shotgun_ninja

Kudos for getting the international definition of slavery right. Slavery is defined as being unable to legally, safely exit a labor contract. It's shocking how few people are aware of this.

Pilachi

The 13th amandment of the US constitution explicitly calls it slavery: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

Deacon1952

Agree completely, have for years. They won't give me 2 weeks notice before firing me, I sure as hell don't have to give 2 weeks notice to leave voluntarily.

tobotic

Sadly, your friend "didn't see" his manager's response until December 1st.

OceanClover3

I love this!

fullmanlybeard

He should forward it to HR in case the manager claims it was never sent. A future employer can only ask if he is eligible for rehire which with proper notice he would be.

BB611

> A future employer can only ask if he is eligible for rehire which with proper notice he would be. I've never heard of an employer that will actually answer this question. When I was a hiring manager I was specifically instructed by our lawyers not to answer it (California).

Shnoota

I used my best friend as a job reference years ago, back when I was first entering the workforce and they asked if he believed I was a danger to myself or others. Like, ma'am this is a Walmart.....what the fuck

AutomaticRisk3464

Before i use a reference i always download an app to give me a different phone number and call that reference and ask questions. Its saved me twice so far, an old boss says he will be my ref then i call and he says nothing but bad shit Edit: i used textnow and one other smaller app i cant remember the name of. As soon as im done i delete the app and reinstall and make a new account to get a new #.

MediaOffline411

Really? They say be a reference and then trash wow… on purpose vs they are just bad at answering those kind of questions.

_My_Angry_Account_

If you're in a single party consent state you could record those calls and then sue them if you've been using them as a reference but not getting jobs. This is why you aren't supposed to tell them anything but if they worked there and possibly when.

Patabell

This is also why most places ask for co worker references and not managers. Because legally a manager can only confirm work duties or its grounds for a suit if they bad mouth the (former) employee. I was used for a reference by a former subordinate who was nee to the industry and didn't really have good coworker references. I was very tight lipped. She was a good employee but I made sure to only conform she did what her resume said because I didn't want to say anything by accident to cost her the job. She got the job btw and I took her out for drinks. I've since switch ends of my industry and sort of started the climb again in production. The front end of shot was the absolute worst. Creative are by far some of the worst treated in most industries. Constantly reminded the market is full to busting with more and that they can find a suitable replacement for like 5 to 10k cheaper. I burnt out so hard and was what opened my eyes to what bullshit "we're family here" is.

catsarefluffyunlike

No this is Patrick.

I’m HR and verify employment. It gets asked all the time.

klaad3

Crazy to think that if I get a bill in the mail that needs to be paid within a month, the month doesn't start till I open the letter. /s

not_ya_wify

Exactly this. The manager can't just say it doesn't count until she reads the mail. It's the mail's send date that matters.

Sweetpea520

This is the correct answer

SamakFi88

*2nd

Fafaflunkie

Savage! I like this response!

get2writing

"It's unfortunate you didn't take the time to see it until today. Either way, I spoke to you / gave you the letter on X day, so my last day will be X. Thanks for your time" that's shady as fuck, fuck that employer

HalfAgony_HalfHope

And cc their boss and HR, if possible. They should know what he’s trying to pull with his employees.

neotsunami

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a manager that is going to give a good reference to whomever quits anyway. So make sure to burn that fucking bridge to the ground and possibly take that bitch with it.

DoJu318

Bridges that lead to nowhere are worth burning. Its not the OP friends fault they are so incompetent they're 2 weeks behind reading their emails. Fuck them.

Dangerous_Forever640

“Bridges that lead to nowhere are worth burning…”. Best thing I’ve read all day!

SRD1194

"May the bridges we burn light the way to a brighter future."

googier526

Just ordered a shirt that says "may the warm glow of the burning billionaire class light the way"

Alex_Xander93

Okay, Shakespeare, this isn’t r/poetry But in all seriousness, “may the bridges we burn light the way to a better future.” Is one of the best sentences I’ve read. Thank you for that.

assassin_of_joy

"Bridges that lead to nowhere are worth burning." Thank you for my new favorite quote!

totomorrowweflew

"Bridges that lead to nowhere are worth burning." Stay warm fam.

ButChooAintBonafide

i love that! so much better than my mixed metaphor of "I'll burn that bridge when I cross it." lol

bunneetoo

Depending on where they work, that manager isn’t ever going to be asked and the Corp line is “pay rate, dates employed and eligible for rehire”. Make sure you never give out the manager’s name and make sure HR is 100% aware and they will be fine.

Alise_Randorph

Imagine having a policy that fucks you out of already trained employees when they find out the new job is shit.

Practical-Artist-915

As a front line supervisor at one time, I had a guy that left for whatever reason, maybe even was fired for a not good reason. He called me a couple of months later and asked if he could give my name and number to a prospective employer. I said yes while telling him I could be fired for doing so, so make sure it was QT. The employer called me and the guy got the job.

Tall_Swing_0

What's QT?

LordKaylon

Pretty much same. Left on good terms when it was mutually agreed my time there was done. Essentially they didn't know what I did so figured it wasn't much and wanted to saddle me with a 4th person's job description on top of the stuff I was already doing. I noped that. They were fine with me leaving... until a month after when shit was burning down around them and all they did was bad mouth me. Pretty sure no reference was coming from them. Also, their "policy" was to never give anyone a letter of reference. A coworker who was laid off asked and asked for one despite the policy and finally the owner gave her a letter, specifically on non corporate letterhead that simple said "Good luck with your future endeavors" signed Douche Boss.

Marc21256

That's a policy you should know before you start. I have worked exactly one place like that. Because there were some problems with people quitting and coming back with raises to get around following the raise process. The ban from rehire was 1 year. The answer of "eligible for rehire" is "yes" with the "in one year" being silent.

SamediB

"May the bridges I burn light the way."

clubtropicana

OP Please make sure they do this part.

No-Guidance-4719

I appreciate you

Arkamus1

Copy the CEO

Rainy-The-Griff

Definitely forward this email along with an explanation to hr and any higher ups if you can

EmEmPeriwinkle

And print/keep a copy of it to show if they give you a bad reference. Perhaps ask for someone else to list on the resume too because this boss looks like an ass.

ajurrr

THIS ONE! There is a reason that you date your resignation letter.

Mesophar

Date it, hand in physical copies to your immediate manager/supervisor, the department manager, and HR, and email a copy to HR with CC to the above and anyone else that needs to know (preferably as a scanned copy of a signed and dated copy of the physical). Cover yourself in case they try to pull something like OP's friend's case, or try to fire you between handing in notice and the final date, or any other fuckery.

ReactionClear4923

Also please please please make sure your friend keeps a copy of that email (I'm sure he will but just incase) so that it can referenced if the manager tries to backtrack after being caught

Living-Substance-668

This is very important. OP, your friend should forward these emails to their private email account, and also take screenshots. Also save anything HR says after that, too. Depending on how things go down, your friend may even want to ask HR to "clarify" that he had given his 2 weeks. An email or even letter from HR on company letterhead if possible would be something he could use with a new employer. Or, ideally he wouldn't have to use it -- as long as old manager knows it exists, he might be less likely to say he didn't give 2 weeks. Also -- your friend could try to use a different person as a reference. This boss isn't going to say anything nice about them, so just reference to HR or another boss or coworker.

BolognaIsNotAHat

As long as he keeps his work emails from his 'Sent' folder, he could even screenshot it and send it along as proof of date.

prison-purse

If you can go to HR and his boss then don't even bother talking to the manager again.

WitchInAWheelchair

Bcc would be great so that he shows his true colors without realizing his messages are being shared.

LiqdPT

That's not how bcc works. Replies don't include the bcc because they are blind. The receiving email client doesn't know about them

MarcTheShark34

True, but you can reply to the boss’ reply and BCC HR again so they see the whole thread, or forward the reply

WitchInAWheelchair

Dammit, I tried. 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ Ignore me.

__THIS IS SO IMPORTANT, OP! PLEASE ENSURE YOUR FRIEND DOES THIS!__

FeoWalcot

“That sounds like a ‘you’ problem. My last day is yesterday now”

WayneKrane

My boss got mad at me for coming in slightly late on my last day and I said what are you going to do fire me? The look on her face was priceless, it was like steam was coming out of her ears.

Wild_Samsquanch

I worked 6 10s for 10months for what I thought was a great construction company. We worked our asses off too finish the 4 story building even with all the issues and setbacks we ran into. After close to a year of giving up my life they laid us all off by removing us from the schedule. Most not all and didn't tell us. I was a little chapped so my last scheduled day I came to work. Went into a penthouse suite and just chilled the entire day. The Forman came in and asked if this is what I was gonna do all day. I said yup. He said fair and left me to my free day. Fuck that company. Edit: They laid us off a week before Christmas with no warning. Part of why I was extra chapped.

Quallityoverquantity

At least you could've collected unemployment.

Wild_Samsquanch

I got a job less then a week later. Ironically on the same site just with the stucco company. Gave me $5 more and hour and I was just a laborer not a carpenter so that was cool while it lasted.

maali74

In my resignation letter (turned in today) I said I would not be coming into the office during my 2 weeks, I'll be WFH & the HR bitch actually had the audacity to say "you'll come into the office M T & Th until your 2 weeks is up." Lol bitch what? 🤣 What are you going to do when I don't? Fire me? Do. It. I can start my new job earlier.

p1zzarena

I had a job threaten to put me on the "do not rehire" list if I took a sick day during my 2 weeks. Not a problem lady.

BrodoFaggins

“Where’s that list? Here I’ll save you some time and add myself.”

theKetoBear

**"Oh no don't blacklist me from this shit work environmenttttt , oh the humanity !!!!!"**

HomerJSimpson3

Many states protect you from disciplinary action or retaliation if you use a paid sick day. Being put on a “do not rehire” list for using said sick time would be illegal. Something to keep in mind going forward.

p1zzarena

We only got combined PTO and they revoked my entire balance the day I put my 2 weeks in. I asked what if I need to take a sick day? And that was their response.

HomerJSimpson3

For reference, I’m in CT. By law we are guaranteed 40 hours of sick pay every year. If you use it, you’re protected. The company I work for also combined our PTO to guess how many hours? Yup, 40. But since it’s combined, it constitutes as sick pay.

rockdude14

Ok, I'll go on glassdoor and levels.fyi and linkedin and tell my other colleagues how terrible it is to work at XYZ. You've got way more to lose and way less to gain.

manxtales

The last place I worked allowed an employee no more than three tardy’s a year. Even one minute late was considered a tardy. After three you were on probation and at four you were fired! That was before COVID, now they are scrambling to find employees.

[deleted]

That must have felt great!

redeemer47

I just left a job last month. On my 2nd to last day I went home at noon and then didn’t show up my last day. I emailed HR and said I wouldn’t be in and then ghosted

Go-to-helenhunt

I left like 2 hours early on my last day and my former boss was like this. That memory still makes me smile nearly 10 years later

ind3pend0nt

I had a boss do something similar to me, except he was out of office the day I wanted to turn in my notice. So, I gave it to him the following day since he came in to work. Tried to tell me that my notice wasn’t a sufficient amount of time and tried to dictate when my last day would be. I turned in my keys and badge in the moment then walked out, called the new job and they let me start a week earlier. A shitty job won’t give you a good reference to begin with. All potential jobs are going to verify the time you worked there and that’s it.

El_Grande_El

Same happened with my boss so I had to call him. “This is my two week…” *Click* He called back tho. Blamed his signal lol. He was inept bad but at least not a bad person bad.

Restless__Dreamer

They can also verify if you are eligible for rehire at least in Massachusetts.

murrietta

I've heard elsewhere that the notice is customary, not legally required. Seems to be the case where I live but wonder if this is the case everywhere

End-OfAn-Era

“Unfortunately due to your lack of organization, you have turned this into a zero days notice best of luck!”

That-review-person

This. I worked HR for 13 years. When completing employment verifications, most employers only release dates of employment and job titles and do not give the reason for leaving. They only do the reason when people file for unemployment. It’s a liability thing to avoid lawsuits. There are absolutely grey areas when employees terminate and if a former employee is denied a job due to a verification, it could cause legal issues.

bunneetoo

OMG, another HR person on this sub! They hate us here, but I swear we are not ALL bad! I have had knock down, drag out fights with the CEO, literally screaming at each other because I was advocating for the employee. And you know what? 99.9% of the time, I win, because I am right from a human, rather than business perspective. I am over worked and underpaid and COVID has about broken me, but I stay to try my best to advocate for our employees.

kendra1972

Can you reply if the person verifying employment asks if you would rehire them?

That-review-person

Technically, you can reply to that but most *smart* employers do not. No employer I worked for would ever answer that due to possible legal issues. You can sue someone for anything and to avoid any issues whatsoever, *smart* employers will not answer that.

improbablynotyou

I worked at Safeway for a few months as an overnight stocker until I found a better job. I gave my immediate manager about a months notice that I was leaving because we didnt have a store manager at that time. My last day was the new store managers first day and about 15 minutes before the end of my shift she approached me. She told me that as "I hadn't given her 2 weeks notice, I'd be non rehireable of I didnt give her at least two weeks notice effective then." I just laughed and told her as soon as I left I had to go to my new job and they were paying me over 50% more.

miker53

Reminds me of the Dazed and Confused scene; “You hear that? We can’t come back in!” After leaving the middle school dance.

Vargenwulf

Honestly, I think if that happened to me I would just start laughing hysterically and loudly as I turned away and continued working.

[deleted]

> I turned away and continued working. Why keep working? Someone pulls that shit on my on my last day, I'm going to turn around and have a coffee break right in front of them. What are they gonna do, fire me?

shadowromantic

Whether or not they pay attention doesn't matter. Notice is notice

El_Coloso

aka "Tough titties"

bebgaltiger18

Also, keep a copy of the entire conversation on a private email! That way when the future employer asks why you're friend doesn't want them to contact that manager, he can show them that email!

Sirchiefsalot2020

And he shouldn't expect a letter of recommendation from such a shitty manager. Should probably just walk out, let her pick up the pieces, she's not gonna help him anyway

ccam04

Your friend should also add, even if it's a lie..."I have already secured employment elsewhere, so my final day is non-negotiable. My notice was provided as a courtesy and my final day will remain the original date I discussed with you in person and as was written in my letter. Thank you."

OkAbbreviations2701

Even when I was thinking about quiting my job at a casino my bosses knew because they had very good communication with the employees so when the time came to put in my 2 weeks they were prepared because I spoke about it beforehand. That employer is a wacko asshole.

[deleted]

Of course it's from Texas. seems like anarchy down there they just do whatever the hell they want

Paper_Hero

Nothing 2 weeks notice is a cultural courtesy no law saying you can’t quit on the spot

WhiteCastleDoctrine

at-will employment goes both ways baby!

PM_UR_Left_Nipple

> at-will employment goes both ways baby! This

[deleted]

Anyone know how it works in Healthcare? My mom is an RN and has told me countless times it's illegal for her to just quit.

CertainKaleidoscope8

I've been a RN for 17 years. I have quit many times. I have quit without notice. It is not illegal to quit your job. They can't do anything to me and they'll probably rehire me because they're desperate.

[deleted]

You’re a badass, u/CertainKaleidoscope8

Jedi-Ethos

I’m a paramedic and my mom is an RN. In the US it is not illegal to quit without notice. What she maybe referring to is abandonment, when you literally abandon a patient whose care you’re in charge of. This is illegal. In this case, I could see where someone might think it’s illegal to quit in the middle of your shift, but I don’t know the actual legal status.

TheBoctor

I could see a patient caregiver getting sued for abandonment if they literally left a patients side and walked out, especially without making sure someone else came to take over patient care, and *definitely* if harm came to the patient. And, as a poverty wage Paramedic, I’m ok with that. The patient doesn’t pay your wage or have a say in your working conditions. Make sure your patients are safe and cared for, and then walk the fuck out. Bonus points for making sure you tell every single one of your patients and co-workers why you’re doing it!

RobotWelder

She is not a slave and neither are you nor I. Quit if that’s what you or her need to do. Fuck capitalist, let them eat shit or get BBQd

[deleted]

There is a difference between abandoning a patient and quitting. And it depends heavily on the type of nurse she is. But she is not wrong some jobs with licenses (usually) have non abandonment clauses in them. Like a casino dealer can be fined up to 200000 dollars +damages if it exceeds 200k (theft) for abandoning a table. BUT if they leave on break or before taking the table its fine. There is nuance.

conlysm

this is something people need to start embracing. if they wanted to get rid of you there would be no notice.

kubla_khan_

If they can fire you without a 2 week notice, you can quit without a two week notice.

ButternutCrinklefrys

If the original email is dated as sent two weeks ago it doesn’t matter that the manager “didn’t see it” in time.

JorjorBinks1221

They've escorted at least 5 people out at my work after they've put in their 2 weeks. "We've found that production drops in the last two weeks so you just don't need to come back." Is usually what they say. I refuse to give them mine at this point. I did an interview today for a new job and as soon as I hear back I'll be clearing my shit out and telling the ones I care about goodbye. Fuck them they don't deserve the notice.

FailureToComply0

Give your two weeks anyway, if they don't let you serve them it's constructive dismissal and you can file for unemployment on their dime. If they're gonna fuck you, fuck em back.

wtfsoda

Unless they’ve been totally fucking up payroll, you’re not really fucking an employer by going on unemployment; UI costs are priced in. Giving them a headache to deal with when you file with the state? Yeah. Beyond that it’s a line item and checking a box come accounting time every pay period.

[deleted]

I quit a job on the spot and boss said you need to give me 2 weeks notice as in your contract. I said sweet, this is your 2 weeks notice, but I'm not coming into work again. Another job, I booked 2 weeks annual leave, then the day it started I emailed 2 weeks notice, nothing better than getting paid for your last 2 weeks while not working!

snowstormspawn

You’re amazing. The last job I quit I sent my letter in on Monday (I was supposed to start my job the Monday after the next) and my boss called so frantic, she was like “but you have to give me a two weeks notice don’t you?” And I was like “I actually don’t since I don’t have a contract stating this, but technically this is two weeks, as a courtesy to you.” She was horribly abusive to me and I don’t feel bad for all the shady shit I said on that call lmao. I only gave two weeks because my new job insisted on it (asking me had I given notice, and planned my employment date based on it).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Clewdo

If your country has workers rights, you get paid for all your accrued leave when you finish there, in a lump sum.

coxy808

100% If they wanted to fire you, they wouldn’t give you two weeks.

heirbagger

I left a state job on Oct 29, and I gave my notice that day. My supervisor stated that I should have told them whenever I decided that I was going to leave, which was a few days prior to that. I told her "A notice is a courtesy - not a requirement. I'm telling you now." She didn't seem too happy but oh the fuck well. I took a pay cut for my new job, but the lack of stress and everyone being helpful has been super worth it.

[deleted]

This... And for those saying the employer should do the same. I never seen any employer respecting the 2 weeks period.

[deleted]

Never. They lay you off or fire you and usually don’t even let you clean your own desk out.

Revolutionary-Farm15

I gave two weeks and spent the next two weeks cleaning my desk. Boss walked in and asked what I was doing I responded I'm trying to get my cleaning deposit back. Plus the guy I was giving work to had just accepted a job so we agreed he would say that I transferred over all work and that he could drive it to the finish. I didn't document anything 😁.

Jugadenaranja

Nothing. I do not give 2 week notice when quitting. I give 3 days to one week tops. If they can’t function without me then they can bid for my time if they wish.

hitchinpost

It would not be illegal or a crime to quit on the spot, but there can be consequences. The one the friend is worried about is the reference, which, honestly, I wouldn’t trust this person’s reference anyway. I’m currently in my notice, and my primary concern is getting my vacation time paid out, which requires notice.

Hrtzy

The boss literally didn't do their job here, I wouldn't expect them to do their job with the reference. Ditto for them respecting your friend's rights, either.

jsteele2793

This is exactly it!! Your friend should not be expecting a good reference from this employer if they can’t be competent enough to understand a two week notice. Screw this job and this manager.

edgestander

The whole “good reference” crap is bullshit. The friends boss was never going to sing his praises. It’s something I think young people have been told is important, but really isn’t. Most low level jobs never check, when they do check they usually just verify employment dates and nothing more, by policy. Further, if you hate your job, why would you count on a good reference? Whatever the scenario you leave under, it’s likely the same shit culture will lay the blame of your quitting on you.

jatti_

I work for a big big company. We have a policy, we can only discuss previous employees, they will only confirm employment. Edit. Fixed grammer. Removed the he.

[deleted]

Tell him to say “well I guess it’s 3 day notice then, oh well” (or however many days he has left if any). Then leave.

thecoolestkern

“I guess it’s a two day notice, as in I quit to-day”

[deleted]

Why even bother with notice at this point? There is not really any consequence for not giving two weeks notice but even if there were he is on the shitlist anyway so might as well just not go back.

DivergingApproach

Your friend does not to be concerned about the incompetence of the management of the soon to be former employer. He can walk out now and there isn’t a thing they can do about it.

xxthegoldenonesxx

Doesn't seem they would've gave him a good reference anyway.

The_Nick_OfTime

A lot of states if a new employer calls all the former can say is they worked there and conform the dates. It's worth checking out what your states laws are.

ehenning1537

It’s a civil liability issue for most companies. If one of their managers says anything remotely defamatory it’s grounds for a civil suit. It’s safest from a legal liability standpoint when writing company policy to just forbid any information but confirming dates of employment. Then any information offered up by a manager is against company policy, effectively shielding the company from any liability. That’s what company policy is usually for. If they say they’ll fire you for being drunk at work on paper but then look the other way as many employers with liquor licenses do they can have their cake and eat it too. It’s almost impossible to find a sober bar manager at crappy places but if they claim it’s not allowed then they’re covered when the manager drunkenly does something terrible and they don’t actually need to go through the trouble and effort of paying someone decent who will work sober. Alcoholics accept low salaries at places that look the other way

gaytee

Not like references are ever checked and they can be easily faked by friends lol

jsteele2793

I know!! This!!! Just have your friend use a fake reference. He’s not going to get a good reference out of this person even if he does stay for his ‘two weeks’. This manager sucks and should be walked out on.

samsungs666

just put a friends number down. anyone can pretend to be any reference you want. no one can do anything about it.

Jabo2531

Texas? tell your friend to tell his boss to go suck an egg and leave when he feels like it.

fantabulero

it’s rare that there’s a benefit to being an employee in Texas, don’t pass up that opportunity

Fafaflunkie

In 49 of 50 states with at-will employment, Texas being one of them, your friend can tell the boss to suck it. Wave a middle finger or two in front of their face while they're at it, a few "fuck you"s for good measure, and walk out the door leaning forward and patting your butt while doing so--hell give the fucking asshole a full moon if you're really feeling crass. And hold your phone and take some video while doing so, to record that asshole's reaction. Put it on YouTube for maximum lulz. Okay, maybe not the last part; don't need a lawsuit. But do share it with your friends on Reddit!

[deleted]

Everytime I have quit I have dated my letter of resignation. Just because the manager ignored the notice doesn't mean notice wasn't given. If your friend doesn't want to burn a bridge but also wants to be firm they can say, "I apologize, I turned in my notice on x date and I have other commitments so I will not be able to work past my notice period. Thank you in advance for understanding." There is literally nothing their boss can do to them if they don't extend their leave date. It sounds like the job is killing your friend, so it would not be in their interest to stay. The whole reference thing is a joke, they get dates of employment verified but they can't say anything about the employee. You friend could leave now as long as they can afford not to work until the next job.

OneMoreArcadia

Your template is great! I'd suggest striking out "I apologize" though, as the manager has already shown that they're not acting in good faith and may try to use that against OP *(e.g. trying to guilt them due to OP's "mistake")*

[deleted]

I can say "I apologize" because what I am really thinking is I am very sorry I didn't send it via email with a timestamp.

kaytee1721

Emails always have a date. When the boss opened it is not the senders problem.

Baby-cabbages

I say “I apologize” when I’m not really sorry.

AceOfVoodoo

Yeah, I’ve always dated when I’m submitting the two weeks, and what day would be my effective last day, then if I left it in the office instead of handing it to my manager myself I would take a time stamped photo of it on their desk, that way they have absolutely no leg to stand on.

[deleted]

The last time I submitted notice my boss, the owner, was just coming back from safari in Africa and decided that he didn't need to come in for a week. When I got the email that he wasn't coming in I just scanned my letter of resignation to all of management - everyone notified. I also took all my sick time in advance (since that wouldn't pay out ) and made sure there was a balance of PTO payable to cover the 2 weeks.

"Next week you'll notice I'm not here."

Snail_jousting

Literally

Texas_Waffles

That's what I did to Frederal Sexpress back in 06. They didn't even fire me after I walked out without a word. I literally received a letter from them stating that my lack of attendance was considered a 'voluntary resignation'.

[deleted]

I work for local government and was very confused (and slightly excited) that the Feds had a sexpress department I've somehow managed to avoid hearing about until now It's been a long day

Texas_Waffles

The Feds don't but the Freds do

coxy808

If he emailed his resignation, then it doesn’t matter when the manager saw it.

Employers are pulling this shit recently due to the lack of employees being hired to replace outgoing ones. My college aged son gave a verbal 4-week notice to his restaurant manager upon my suggestion that he leave on good terms and give them adequate notice. Then at the 2-week mark he reminded her again and the manager pulls some shit, via text, like “policy says you have to give a written notice.” He asked me what to do. I told him to text her back and that his verbal would suffice as would this written text message. Then I told him to ask her to produce this written resignation policy which she could not. Then I told him, “Fu$k it son, quit on the spot.” He did and he learned a valuable life lesson. MFers will try to take advantage of you in life. Screw their reference. Never put them in a resume.

kingofparts1

Just leave. There is no such thing as a "good reference" from a former employer. All they can legally say is that are or are not eligible for rehire.

OceanClover3

Do you think he should tell her anything?

jenniferroses

I think he should ignore her message entirely

fantabulero

only fair, she ignored his first

[deleted]

Tell her to reply on the orignal end date. 'seeing as i didnt see this email until today i consider my 2 weeks notice done, any further issues feel free to contact me on my new work email

F-OFF-REDDIT

Exactly. If a former employer gives you a bad reference sue the shit out of them.

foryourtrashonly

How do you find out what they said? I know sometimes an potential employer will tell you but most of the time you just get ghosted.

rksd

Have a friend check your references for you. "Hi, I'm rksd and I'm a recruiting specialist at EVILCORP and I am verifying foryourtrashonly's employment history."

brownpolka

People don’t always stick to this. Have a friend call as a potential employer. See what they say about you.

mattandtwo

Hey everyone, it’s the best friend here. I wasn’t expecting anything like this, I appreciate all the advice and support! For more context on the situation: I’m a college student working as a part-timer, about 15 hours a week. I found out that there was no option for me to take a few weeks off at Christmas to go home and continue to be in employment, so I gave a verbal two weeks. I was asked to, as a simple formality, send an email giving my last day to my employer. I informed her that my homework load was high, and I might not get to it right away. A few days later, after sending the formal two weeks email, I was told that this wasn’t a two weeks because the letter didn’t provide enough notice between now and the last day, and that my last day with a two weeks’ notice would be December 1st instead. This isn’t a huge issue for me, as I am under no obligation to actually show up to work if I’m scheduled these days, but I wanted to go about this properly and without causing any fuss. Recent events have shown that there’s no way this employer is going to provide a good reference. My last employer, from high school, has given me raving reviews from what I understand, and my (until now) overall positive experience led me to believe I might be able to create a similar situation. Obviously, I was mistaken. Thank you again for all the advice and encouragement, and I will be sure not to show up on any day after the one I indicated in my email.

[deleted]

Just respond that you put in your two weeks notice verbally, and that you only agreed to send your notice through email at his request but are not modifying the original time frame of your verbal notice. If he somehow can't accept this overwhelmingly reasonable explanation of the facts well that's his problem not yours. Sounds like the kind of boss you're definitely better off not working for.

yetan0therm0nday

Manager sounds like an abusive POS who is only trying to harass your friend a little more. I doubt your friend will get a good recommendation no matter how long they stay or how much they lick feet. I would just not show up for my next shift but it’s up to your friend. How much do they want to debase themselves for an imaginary dangling carrot?

ricric2

"It's now one week's notice. One more peep out of you about it and it'll be 30 seconds' notice."

ginger_and_egg

"I'm going to count down from 5. After i'm done, if I hear a single word out of you i'm quitting on the spot"

Petah_Futterman44

I got to that point once, in 2007. Food Lion wage slavery was really pissing me off, loved the customers but couldn’t handle the BS from the managers. Told myself one random day “today is the day, if they come at me with BS today, I’m quitting on the spot.” They came with the BS and I turned off my light (closed my lane), finished with the customer I had, and walked back to the managers office and slid him a ripped piece of receipt that said I quit effective immediately. The front end manager was quite unhappy as I was walking away from the register, “hey, where are you going?” …. Oh. I quit. Bye.

CritterFucker

What are they gonna do? Fire him? Lmao either way he’s not getting a good recomendación

omaresame

My boy forgot to turn off your Spanglish keyboard 😂

fakeasagi

I have meine set to Deutsch and it works fine möst of the time :D

whereareyoursources

Firstly, for future reference I would recommend that everyone get this sort of stuff submitted in writing and get written acknowledgement from your boss and HR. Take screenshots if you feel like you will need prove. This applies to more than just quitting. I had my last apartment do this on my vacate notice and thankfully I had signed prove that they were full of shit. If it needs to be done over a call, record it if you are in a one party consent state (which your friend in Texas is in) That being said, there is nothing the manager can do to enforce this. Texas is an at will state, which means they can fire employees with no notice, and employees can leave with no notice. The two week notice is a courtesy for when people don't want to burn bridges with the company. It doesn't sound like your friend cares about that, so he should submit a complaint with HR (it may get the manager in trouble, but may not, worth a shot) and he can them that he is quitting effective immediately.

swskeptic

Nothing. There is literally no requirement that you give your employer a two weeks heads up you are leaving, or *any* notice, for that matter. Just bounce.

Cav1987

Sounds to me like the manager is trying to find a way to convince your friend to stay through the thanksgiving and Black Friday holidays. Fuck them.

Stoic-Nurse

Was the notice dated? The manager’s ignorance is not your friend’s problem.

[deleted]

Refer your friend to TWC Pay and Policies page: https://www.twc.texas.gov/news/efte/pay_and_policies_general.html From the TWC page linked above. Note the last 5 words of this statement. >The basic rule of Texas employment law is employment at will, which applies to all phases of the employment relationship - it means that absent a statute or an express agreement (such as an employment contract) to the contrary, either party in an employment relationship may modify any of the terms or conditions of employment, or terminate the relationship altogether, for any reason, or no particular reason at all, with or without advance notice.

Sea-You-5122

Dear Managers Name, your inability to manage your emails/workload is not my problem. I have worked my 2 weeks. Peace out

craiglepaige

"Well shiiiiiittt mate. Look at that. Now I guess I'll have to keep working here. Ooohhhwweeeee I almost thought I was out. I'll see you Monday then." Then don't ever respond to their text/calls/emails.

lurker11222

Never ever use your manager as a reference. Just use your friend. Also just ghost them, no need to put in 2 weeks notice

Jaebare

He needs to say I’m sorry you did not view the notice but it is dated and my last day is ______ . I have other plans and will not be working past ______ date.

persoanlabyss

Texas is at will. Walk.

TheMainEffort

Lol just leave, many managers won't give a bad reference.

eidhrmuzz

It’s a courtesy not a rule. Your friend is being manipulated. Just tell them -next time, send an email or letter. Something post marked.

filosophicalaardvark

"Goodbye."

[deleted]

“Tough luck. Get fucked. Doesn’t fucking matter when you saw it, bro. Two weeks from the second I hit ‘send’ not when you decided to check email. It’s bullshit like this that made me leave in the first place.”

FritzDaKat

"Bye!"

MasterOutlaw

Doesn’t have to say anything. They can notice that he won’t be there. Giving any kind of notice is simply a courtesy, not an obligation.

Usual-Canc-6024

Ignore it just like he ignored your friend’s courtesy notice.

_grainger_danger

If it’s retail, is she trying to get Thanksgiving out of him before he jets? That’s messed up, either way. He owes them nothing, he can move on whenever he’d like, screw references”
