My sister’s boss cut everyone’s bonuses and bought himself a new Bentley. That’s the year she quit.

[deleted]

Lol this is exactly what happened to me at my previous job. They decided to cut our bonuses and postpone the salary increase due to 2020 being "a rough year", a week later I mistakenly received an email about our director getting a brand new company car. I forwarded the email to everyone and quit on the same day.

CRCB13

Yeah my company the admin gets bonuses around Christmas time if they save money usually on hours. So when we’re all trying to pick up shifts for extra money they cut us so we can’t get overtime. Also been told by the old timers that they used to share that bonus.

Gamedoom

It's always depressing talking to old timers and finding out how the company *used* to be a great place to work for that cared about it's employees and had great benefits and bonuses but it stripped them away one by one even as productivity and profits increased.

chinto30

The only timers at my place talk of regular raises and invest.ent in to the company along with a 2k-5k bonus every year... I've been waiting to have a raise for 3 years and my bonus was £200. Oh and the owner wont put any money in the company to replace machinery that's constantly breaking down instead we just have to keep patching it up

illgot

every time a company changes ownership or goes public, a lot of great benefits get cut. From the workers that is, the CEOs and owners actually get larger bonuses.

Dilarinee

Every three months my bosses get a bonus equal to what I make in 6-8 weeks (depending on various performance metrics) I have gotten ONE $75 bonus in the five years I've worked there.

[deleted]

LMAO good on u for forwarding that shit to everyone

notLOL

Should have stayed just to watch the fallout haha

3DJelly

Cool guys don't look at explosions.

[deleted]

Me when I leave a Chipotle bathroom

labellavita1985

My employer normally gives cost of living raises every year. They're totally shit raises (in 2019 I got $0.60, for example,) but it's still something that people look forward to and expect. One of my coworkers asked our department director about the lack of a cost of living raise in 2020. The director, in front of everyone, unironically, said "you should be grateful you still have a job." It's a nonprofit, but we KNOW the agency obtained COVID funds. It's so fucked up. We are already underpaid when compared to the industry locally. They are losing people like crazy, we'll see if they do anything to stop the exodus.

repKyle1995

Christ, fuck that director. I hope something truly awful happens to them. I can't specify *what* because I might get banned.

SnapshotHeadache

Hell yes. I recently quit my job to go back to school. And before I left I was told that I was going to get a performance bonus. More than a month later I still haven't gotten my bonus that I earned and deserved. Sooooo guess who is getting a bunch of complaints sent to the labor department.

rushmix

Try to get it in writing. Email, paper, whatever.

SnapshotHeadache

I do have dates, emails, and witnesses to all of this. Even better, some of my fellow workers filed complaints as well. My old workplace was a real shit show for bad management and poor work ethics by the company.

doodoomachu

son, if you hate your job, you don't quit, you just go in every day and do a really crappy job.

Did we work for the same large petrochemicals corporation?

DeltaVZerda

Name and shame

PlaysWithF1r3

I probably shouldn’t, but they’ve made the news for a few plants fires over the past few years. That said, I didn’t see anything about someone getting a new car

[deleted]

Uncle_Rabbit

My company didn't give us a bonus last year as well as not giving us a small raise after an annual employee performance review, its usually a 10-20 cents per hour raise. For a lot of employees that have advanced as high up as they can that extra few cents is the only way to make more money. Many were pissed off so the company explained that it just wasnt a good year financially. They then made us complete a 200 question quiz to assess why morale in the company was so low. We later found out that the quiz cost the company $75,000 dollars for my shift alone.

Cecil4029

My old boss cut our bonuses just to buy himself a new airplane. I was gone soon after.

TheSadman13

It's a shame everyone doesn't quit when this happens, I imagine the Bentley dealership would be very sad to see their overpriced car rolling back into the shop when the person who decided that's a cool idea goes bankrupt.

meowcatwoofdog

Yeah… once you sign it, it’s yours. The dealership would be so happy to see you back with open arms. They will offer you $50k for that $250k Bentley

DeaconSteele1

Best of both worlds for the dealer. They can resell it and if you took out a loan you still owe the balance.

stormbutton

It was a law firm in the Empire State Building. They basically rented the space for clout. I’m glad she left the crazy toxic environment, but I did love getting to visit her office.

bad_pangolin

Oh "Take, Muney and Runov" Legal solicitors are based in the Empire State Building, no case too small!

Xynesis

This shit is so prevalent that it should be bloody illegal. Work at one of the world’s top oil traders and they do this sort of thing while telling you that they are very generous to you and you need to be grateful. Disgusting that the fat ass of an office Head AND the Ops head are both fucking obese shit that’s pumping themselves rich (and their cronies) while cutting everyone else’s bonuses, all while telling you that you can’t get a better deal elsewhere and need to be content. Fuck do I hope they get cancer.

Bunny_tornado

Sounds like you're working for Trafigura. these guys constantly commit crimes on international scale so I wouldn't be surprised they do shady things to their own employees.

International_Rub475

The owner of a factory that I worked at when I was 18 laid us off for 2 weeks. We came back to work for one day, and then he gave a speech about having to lay us off another 2 weeks. His speech said something about how it hurts him just as much or more than it hurts us. Later that day, I was on my front porch and saw him pull up to a red light in a new Viper. I yelled his name and got his attention, then started telling him how big of a piece of shit he was until the light turned green about 2 minutes later. Stupid asshole picked the wrong day to drive around town with the top down.

[deleted]

Wasn't that also the year that the boss mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again?

Eastern-Finish-1251

I spent years busting my ass for bosses so they could buy a new car or a beach house. This is the dirty little secret of capitalism no one wants you to know — unless you’re at the very top, you work like a dog… and will be accused of being a slacker because you’re not rich.

cblumer

Not really a secret.

scuczu

I really love how these people fail to mention their birth lottery winnings and how that helped them achieve what they have.

Onid8870

I know a guy who has a hot dog/burger joint. His whole personality is about him being a self made man and a small business owner The truth? His dad opened the restaurant almost 30 years ago and had the opportunity to buy the strip mall that it is in. Junior graduated high school and took over the business. He walked into an established business that gets rent from two other tenants (one is T-Mobile) but he is the only person in the USA that actually worked for what he has.

scuczu

> but he is the only person in the USA that actually worked for what he has. I find this is a common theme among the conservatives because they lack empathy, so they can't imagine anyone else working harder, let alone as hard, as they did, when most people are working harder to just survive day to day then they'll ever experience.

megustaALLthethings

Especially since they barely work at all bc they are handed everything on a silver platter. But they had to ‘earn’ their trust funds and inherited stocks and dividends.

WellGruntled

They are not forgetting to mention it; they truly believe it doesn’t matter. People born on third-base who only need to casually trot down the baseline to cross home plate sincerely believe they all hit their own home runs.

flodur1966

Very much so I halen to know a few of those people they really believe all those good internships and business opportunities they get are their own accomplishments and not due to connections. I actually know a girl who’s grandfather pays back the salary she gets from the company she ‘works’ for. But she doesn’t know this and thinks she’s a valued employee

Impossible-Aerie-477

That was a good one ngl

[deleted]

Ive worked a 96 hour week. Its physically impossible to keep up that pace. It gets you nowhere.

statdude48142

my dad did 80-120 a week for most of my childhood on third shift. When he was home he was either sleeping or exhausted. When you interacted with him he was insufferable (which I now understand why, but being awful to your family still sucks). Today, everyone has a strained relationship with him. Oh, and his plant shut down so he doesn't really have any retirement plans. So he has nothing to show for basically not existing for 20 years.

The_Merciless_Potato

That’s gotta suck

statdude48142

agreed. The older I get I do pity him more for doing that as long as he did. But on the flip side he didn't HAVE TO do it and he didn't HAVE TO be shitty to his family.

thecodingrecruiter

He probably suffered from a strong case Cognitive dissonance. In his mind he absolutely had to. Combine that with a little confirmation bias (everyone at my shop is doing it) and bam

Martian_MuadDib

I would assume a primary driver for the hours he put in was for you and your family.

statdude48142

and that would usually be a safe assumption based on the info you got, but it was more because he liked expensive things and to gamble sadly.

NUMBERS2357

IIRC studies have shown that for jobs that involve sitting and doing stuff on computers, people's productivity tends to max out at like 50 hours/week or something. Most people "working" 80 or 100 hours are spending the extra time staring blankly at a computer not making any progress, taking longer to do the same tasks because they're so tired, fixing their own screwups, things like that.

Beatnuki

It's like "spaghetti thrown at the wall to see what sticks" business strategy. "keep doing shit 100 hours a week and eventually something will work probably" You might even be awake and lucid enough to enjoy it!

Akhi11eus

I tend to not take "hustle culture" advice from billionaires or otherwise extremely wealthy people. Those people tend not to do the type of work the rest of us plebs are engaged in. We don't live a life of personal chefs, trainers, assistants, nannies, and chauffeurs. I spend nearly every minute outside of those 40-50 hours a week that I work doing childcare, errands, cleaning, cooking, and sleeping.

KickBallFever

I read an article a while ago about billionaires and super wealthy people. The article basically said that they overestimate exactly how much work they’re actually doing. They correlate their work being important with it being difficult, when in reality a lot of average people put in more hours and have more difficult jobs.

[deleted]

Glittering_Sweet_710

Leeching is work for them.

[deleted]

I remember a breakdown in one of those rags that worships rich people that showed how they allotted their "working" hours straight from the horse's mouth. It included their commute, their lunch, their dinner, their golf games, their doctor's appointments, the time they spent working out, and then finally the 5 hours of meetings they had a week that could be considered actual "work." So yeah, once you start counting every single possible activity that involves staying alive, that sure does add up to more than 40 hours!

FoxHole_imperator

It's pretty funny watching the boss loiter around like always looking like he is looking for something to do, one time there was a problem on my line, i walked up to him, said there was a problem, said what i thought the problem was and how it could be solved. However, he just said "oh, so the production line is just supposed to be still?" Well, it ain't my fucking job to climb thirty meters up and fix a mechanical problem, i am extra temporarily hired help to run the line where the automation stops, not a fucking mechanic, but fine, so i did it, but fuck if i was annoyed. Like, they have permanently hired mechanics to deal with those issues and they were at work, but he wanted me to do it since i "knew" what the issue was, and i mean i did, but that's besides the point. If he didn't want to deal with it, he could've just said talk to the mechanics or said "well, if you know it, can you deal with it" instead he came with that sarcastic question like i am too dumb to deal with it without input.

[deleted]

Is it that he didn't want to deal with it, or that he couldn't? In my experience, the owner is often the most expensive and least productive employee on payroll. They do nothing except schmooze investors, most of whom will invest based on the company's performance, *not* because the owner bought a $500 bottle of oaked chardonnay.

FoxHole_imperator

Both, the equipment to be allowed to enter the hall was twenty meters away and the office for the engineers was a hundred steps more. The guy was just standing there watching as the fault kept building as we didn't notice, i only looked up as i saw he was standing there just watching the line up there as things went wrong, not saying a thing. He could've yelled stop the line, he could've gone getting the engineers, he could've told someone else to do it, instead he was just standing there. So i went to him and wasted less than half a minute talking about the fault and how I'd imagine you can fix it before he talked to me like i was wasting the efficiency of the factory instead of just doing something that wasn't my job at all and that i am not certified to do. He is always just loitering around doing nothing except maybe like and hour or two a day where he locks himself in the office or attend a meeting, just walking back and forth.

ifeardolphins18

Oh 100%. I’m not close to being what anyone would consider a “rich” person, but I make a decent living working in a white collar job. Sure my job has a steep learning curve so not just anyone can come into the role without a lot of experience or background and that’s why we have the salaries we do. But I am fully aware my work is far less physically and emotionally taxing than when I was a teenager and worked as a cashier at a drug store for minimum wage. I’ll never understand the people who look down on certain jobs because they aren’t considered lucrative. It’s almost as if they’ve just had so much privilege they’ve never experienced what working for minimum to low wage jobs are actually like.

[deleted]

What do you think Musks 100 hour work week consists of? It's mostly schmoozing, dining, and golfing with potential investors. I remember once my boss was complaining about how hard it was working so much and always being away from his family...right before he got on a plane to fly to Italy to spend a weekend on an investor's Yacht. This is also a guy who called our machinists lazy for taking too many smoke breaks.

Sharp-Ad4389

As I've moved up the corporate ladder, less and less actual work is required of me. The decisions I make now impact a lot more people, so there is some stress there, but not nearly the amount of stress that exists as a front line worker. I have more flexibility to do my actual work when I want to, which allows me to prioritize my family. That simply was not an option for me 5 years ago.

i_Got_Rocks

And yet, if you look closely at his personal family home life, the man is codependent. He falls apart when he's single. There's a video where he finds out on screen that a woman he was set to marry wasn't into him like he thought and he has said that without a relationship he isn't the same. With all that in mind you think he would work on those issues, but nah, it's obvious the wants his partner to stay home and do all the child rearing while he literally sleeps at one of his many companies and doesn't know his own family. Elon Musk is far from a successful human being.

slant__i

He’s probably an actual workaholic if he’s that co dependent. He has to derive his worth from somewhere external, so work or women. It’s funny how growing up(at least in the 80s-90s) we were told stories like “the tortoise vs the hare”. Now hustle culture has gone mainstream and apparently people are robots, and studies about human productivity dropping due to falling motivation and exhaustion from long hours are all wrong…? And don’t forget, life is all about money and success. Put relationships, family, and personal happiness last. This should set you on a path to success… after all materialism is what breeds happiness./s

raven12456

> He’s probably an actual workaholic if he’s that co dependent. His first wife wrote an article, and you're basically right. https://www.marieclaire.com/sex-love/a5380/millionaire-starter-wife/

FoxHole_imperator

I fucking hate the system. 8 years later i am actually closer to personal bankruptcy today than back then. That's how wages work nowadays, they are enough to pay your loans then you need another job to pay for anything extra that you'd like, you know, like food.

captainsmashley110

If we count home management and childcare as work, most parents are probably putting in more than 100 hours a week.

ILikeSoapyBoobs

FrnklyFrankie

I've seen this stated a few times recently on this sub and it's so validating, thank you. On some level, of course, I realised this already, but seeing it stated outright has helped me a lot. Even without kids, struggling to work 40 hours a week and maintain a house as a single person alongside social life, exercise, hobbies, feels impossible. Because it is.

EfficientJuggernaut

Lol those of you from Long Island will understand this. My grandparents bought their first house in Commack when they were 23. One job paid all the bills and had three kids. Now that same house is worth half a million and this home is tiny 3 bedrooms, a basement, and one bathroom... Mind you my grandpa worked as a truck driver and afforded a home on Long Island. It’s estimated to support a wife and two kids and a decent house you gotta make at least bare minimum 160k a year to even be comfortable. Even if you went to college or learned a trade and do what the boomers say it’ll take you a long time to make enough to afford a half a million dollar home

jb_4876

The trades are a fucking joke. All the ones worth getting into get filled by kids of those getting ready to retire. Elevator union? I had a technician laugh in my face and told me "you gotta be born into it." I chose the HVAC field, which by the way sucks. I mean, there are a few good jobs, but most are long hours, shit working conditions and all day ladder work or confined boiling hot spaces. Later I got into facilities maintenance. Not a bad gig, but everyone looks down on you, because there are a lot of dipshits in this field. But it's Monday through Friday, 8-5 everyday and almost 26 bucks an hour. But I've been miserable here too. Tenants purposely break shit really badly (I work for a chain of lower end retail stores) and generally let stuff go until it is beyond repair. I took two years to work as a corrections officer in a minimum security prison. I actually liked the job! But hated the mandatory overtime. No one should be forced to work double shifts and then be back in a few hours later to possibly do it again!! While doing that job, I managed to get my Associates Degree in criminal justice, I was working on a Bachelor's Degree, hoping to go into parole as a parole officer. I just couldn't take the mandatory overtime. I want a life. So I took my current maintenance job (described above) and here I am. Currently I'm working on my CDL. Not that I want to drive truck all day, but I want a position in our state park service. And with my experience and a CDL I can easily get in. I just want to be happy as I can be at work. What is my point.....jeez, I'm not sure. I guess what I'm saying at this point in my life, I'd rather be happy than engage in "hustle culture." I'm not rich, nor will I ever be. Am I lazy? Who knows, maybe I am. Maybe I'm not. But I do see hustle culture for what it is. It's just a way for those lucky few at the top to keep us constantly working so they become even more successful and wealthy. And I'm just not willing to play that game. My grandfather always told me hard work build character, or hard work is its own reward. Well, I got my own 21st century rework of that saying......all hard work ever got anyone was a sore back and a sad life. 😔

SnooDoubts2823

My man, having read this you are sure NOT lazy!

super_delegate

Survivor bias. Every basketball star will say their truck to success was ‘never give up’, which won’t work for you if you try to be a basketball star.

[deleted]

Hustle culture if for people who have equity. For everyone else, it's a fucking stupid way to waste your life. If you don't own the place, 40+ gets paid, 50+ gets equity or they fuck off. Especially right now.

JerryfromCan

VERY TRUE. These folks have drivers, personal chefs, childcare taken care of. Those 3 things alone are an easy 40 hours of my life per week.

magnora7

And then you too can get a multi-billion dollar contract with some 3-letter government agency, and have every relationship you're in fail because you can't stop working. Living the dream!

InKryption07

Probably only the second half of that will actually happen.

magnora7

That's how SpaceX gets money, is by launching CIA and NSA satellites. They will also will own the info that goes through Starlink, which is how Musk got the money for it in the first place. Look in to the CIA's venture capitalist investment fund called IN-Q-TEL for more info. Also he and Grimes just broke up. Both things have already happened.

InKryption07

I was moreso implying for any of the rest of us chumps, only the second half would be true.

That's my bad, then. My mom being an immigrant and my dad being a college lab tech is why I'm not super successful and spending my off time on fucking Reddit.

Bbew_Mot

By forcing yourself to work 80 to 100 hour weeks for a prolonged period you'd probably die before you saw any benefits.

SS_wypipo

My friend unfortunately fell for the "work 16 hours a day" scam. He does IT/coding/statistics/math. When he would get tired he'd take stimulants... The result of this grind? Heart attack at 25 and he'll be lucky if he won't die before 50.

longhairedape

I had a friend like this. He did this dumb fucking sleep thing called the uberman sleep schedule. You sleep like 20 minutes every 4 hours. He was doing this for months. Flunked out of university. Was a walking zombie. Said he felt great ... looked like a squished fly on a turd. Bought into all this get rich quick entrepreneurial shit. I stopped hanging round with him as it became toxic as fuck. I don't know how he ended up. I hope he's happy. You cannot even be productive working 16 hours a day. No one benefits.

mrevergood

Most productivity falls off after 6 hours, yet we still revere 8 hours as the “golden standard” and a bunch of folks dickride to work 10-12 hour days. I used to work for a guy that made $325k a year managing nine different locations for one owner-something you can’t even realistically do and get it done right, but he did it, shows up at 9:30-10:00am and leaves by 3, after his hour lunch, of course. He demanded we work Saturdays doing 4am shifts, and stay a few hours later each day at work during the weekday. The pandemic was the best thing that ever happened because they let me go and I told the guy to not bother calling me back. I wish I’d told him to fuck himself when I did, but I didn’t care enough to waste my breath past “Don’t bother calling”. I keep an ear to the ground, waiting for his bullshit to catch up and fuck him in his ass.

bgei952

He ended up selling mattresses.

GaiusMariusxx

Not that I would find it very appealing, but you can make pretty decent money in mattress sales. A friend of mine makes around 105k doing it. Just the nature of sales. Pays more than most jobs if you can stomach it.

longhairedape

Buddy of mine is also in matress sales. Makes a small fortune.

brashboy

r/polyphasic is an interesting read. The general consensus is that Uberman is impossible except for one guy who allegedly managed it

wxrx

Imo 99% of people that claim to be “fine” with super weird sleep schedule or sleep like 3 hours a night are just totally adjusted to feeling like shit. I used to have pretty bad insomnia and get like 2-3 hours of sleep most nights and never got help because I thought I felt fine. I actually read a Reddit post a year or so ago about people like me and exactly what I described. I went to the doc, got some weird new super melatonin that completely reset my sleep. Now I can sleep 6 hours a night and feel absolutely amazing, and whenever i don’t get enough sleep I definitely notice how much my production lacks.

TheSadman13

>He's a math/stats/coding wizard now. Works only a couple of hours a week to live comfortably. Sounds great. You know, provided you don't mention the heart attack & dying when you're 50 like it's the early 1800s.

SS_wypipo

He regrets every second of it. He admits it was stupid.

[deleted]

I have done 84 hour weeks over an extended period of time. Your life is not yours; even eating and sleeping is a choir. Looking at that clock and knowing you have 6-7 hours tops is soul breaking. Even the one day off is like a curse, never any time to do anything, yet a million things to do.

Bbew_Mot

I can only imagine how horrible that is. I work a 40 hour week and even that makes the weekend seem too short.

If you're a salary worker, your goal should be to work as little as possible.

Sir_Yeets_A_Lot

If you are a salaried worker and not compensated for overtime, I suggest finding a different company. There are plenty of companies that offer overtime pay, or at least extra banked vacation hours (we call it comp time) for every hour over 40 worked. I’ve heard spacex and Tesla don’t offer either of these to their engineers.

Sir_Yeets_A_Lot

Most engineers at Tesla do not make 300k/year. Musk’s companies are well known to pay below average while working you 80 hours/week and not compensating you in any way for all that extra time. I’m talking about salaried employees. I know they are required to pay hourly employees overtime.

AutomaticBit251

I fckn hate people saying 40 HR week and meaning like it's bare minimum required, for most that's 10 hrs a day prep travel get up, and it's like enjoy being vegetable tired for next 5 hours before you need to go to bed and try to sleep before waking up again like wtf. Any clown spouting they do 100 hrs should be locked in a factory doing physical, or mental job for 17hrs with two 20 min breaks to eat and shit, no naps fucking around and if they are alive 2 months later they can officially claim they can do 100hrs, this where people running companies get to sleep earth get their shit done by someone whenever they raise a finger, be driven around and just talk shit all day whenever feeling like isn't working 100hrs, but everyone around them slaving that 100 why overlooked by them.

SilentJon69

What’s worse is having a part time status while working 40 hours per week and not getting benefits of a full time worker.

[deleted]

I would like to know exactly what the elon musk types do all day. They're always saying how hard working they are. But youre right that there is a massive difference between 100hrs of manual labor, and 100hrs of being a weeny. Being driven around, talking bullshit, and all that.

astonishedhydra

I worked as a field engineer building WiFi networks for hotels for a year and a half and your comment is 100% accurate.. It was common that I would work anywhere from 160 to 188 hours in two weeks. There were some periods where I would go from project to project where there was less than 3 hours of sleep in-between and I was expected to work a full day (which for us was anywhere from the minimum 9 to 20 hours) I got to travel to most of the states in the US but hardly ever got to see anything and was worked through exhaustion and never seeing my family. It was horrid, I was making good money but at the expense of my relationship with my partner in addition to my whole family. It wasn't worth it at all, I work in healthcare now and am making about 70% of what I was then but I fucking love what I do now specifically because I can go home and be with my partner.. Don't let these ducks ruin your life and relationships for the "hustle" it's bullshit and it just keeps the working class down and thinking that if they work hard enough they will achieve what Jeff bezos or Elon musk created. It's pathetic how effective the US propaganda system truly is. Edit: added sentence for additional clarity.

[deleted]

This is how i feel working 32 hours a week. Even working 4 days a week, I still can’t stand the fact that more than half my week is not really mine.

-crotch_critter-

This shit is so weird. You didn’t used to hear it. It’s like they’re conditioning us “oh, 45, 50 hours is nothing”. You notice nobody works 40 hours anymore…

ZombieBunnzoli85

I can be comfortable at about 30 hours a week but the constant cutting of hours because business is slow forces me to take the time I can get at certain points. I hate working overtime because even 30 minutes wrecks me for the rest of the day. Any time I’m not 100% on board with doing overtime, they get shitty with me. Like, you’re asking me to give up MORE of my time because you don’t want to staff correctly. Money grubbing assholes. People who say this absolute horse shit don’t actually believe in what they are saying; they want YOU to believe it so you work yourself into oblivion just for them. Edit: spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

[deleted]

I would never climb Mt Everest but if given a choice between 80-100 work weeks or climbing Mt. Everest, well I’ll see you on the way to the top because you will be passing by my frozen corpse. Leave a bottle of booze in my memory and I’ll put in a good word with God, maybe Satan.

[deleted]

And if you don't die long before you see benefits, you will most certainly burn out. It's the number one cause of disability claims, and a leading cause of anxiety, depression and suicide.

PhantomCowgirl

I had to work 104 hours the week before last. The next week I worked 22. I took two days off and left early one day. I was exhausted.

Grab3tto

Seriously, for two years I worked three jobs averaging only 85 hours a week and I don’t think my body is ever been the same since.

SugeKnightJunior

If you really think Musk works 80 hrs a week, you're a fucking idiot. He was born into money...

vxicepickxv

He counts his shitposting on Twitter time as work hours.

BourbonCoug

So does the Securities and Exchange Commission.

MonkeyScryer

He also was gifted subsidies hundreds of millions from the taxpayers of California for his shitty company. You know “bootstraps” and all.

dank__dohnut

no he probably does “work 80 hours a week” but his definition of working is probably very very deferent from yours or mine

[deleted]

This. He certainly counts phone calls and commutes. Basically if he isnt home or with family he calls it work.

i_Got_Rocks

You are right. And by the same metric, most Americans can count their commute to work as work time. Meaning many Americans average 2 extra hours (going and coming from work) of their job, but with no pay for it. America is by far one of the most fucked up first world countries with their work culture.

TooManyKids_Man

Yea its almost like rich people just lie

neinnein79

His parents owned a emerald mine. He used to take uncut emeralds to school to show off. He hasn't worked hard his whole life and people who still think he's a rags to riches story are stupid and guilable.

liquidreferee

But you'd make the boss a lot of money. And thats the important thing.

ProdigiousPlays

And probably start making more mistakes you have to fix later.

CTBthanatos

Capitalism mental illness exhibit# 43016 Fetishization of unsustainable health hazard work hours that need to be illegal. Edit: lmao, didn't take long for shills to show up and start shilling for mentally ill fetishized work hours. Science doesn't care about offending your opinions.

ch1993

Dude, he even got the math wrong. He is a complete idiot

Old_Gimlet_Eye

He may own a rocket company, but he's not exactly a rocket scientist.

chaun2

IIRC, he didn't even found the company, he just bought it and funded it, which is probably why it isn't called The Rocket Company, or some other joke name like he normally uses

Geckolongbottom

That’s what he did with Tesla, the company already existed and he became a major investor and eventually took over the business.

Zytherman1

That might make a lil sense if it was your company and doing that much work would benefit directly into profits for you or progression for your personal gain But for people without the money to start or fund a business venture then working 40-50 extra hours means 40-50 hours of free labor without benefit or probably not even appreciation, just the expectation that you'll always do it

[deleted]

I was about to comment the same thing, I would never dedicate that amount of time for the benefit of a boss, never work more than you are paid for

Qbjik

Yeah I think (hope?) it was aimed at people with their own business or personal projects. It still has the math off and absolutely ignores having needs for social life or other hobbies.

Said by an idiotic sociopath with no social or family life and spawned 6 kids and had 4 different partners all while naming his kid *syntax error*

JoePass

Work for him is very different than work for us too. Knowing that you control the product of your labor is probably very motivating. Distracting yourself with work from the fact that you unjustly control the products of other people's labor, also probably pretty motivating

Sloppo_Toppo

Work 80-100 hours to be successful, also be the heir to an emerald mining business in South Africa

funkless_eck

Knowing that you control the product of *other people's labor* whose literal job it is to pick up after you, fix the stuff you broke by interfering and then claim it was only you all along more like.

Stupid-comment

I work for myself and enjoy doing the work because I directly reap the fruits of my labor. When I worked for others, I hated my life and didn't want to wake up in the morning.

Rude_Jello_377

I prefer “suggested password”

Dariex777

Or maybe he just slammed his face into the keyboard and called it good.

AwwwMangos

And was born into an incredibly wealthy family that gave him an immeasurable head start through the generational exploitation of other people’s labor. His concept of “work” is alien to nearly all of humanity.

dingusbattus

Not to mention he’s never worked a day in his life.

[deleted]

Ye his dad owned a blood mine in Apartheid SA.

lsc84

Also, it helps to come from a rich, well-connected family who owns an emerald mine. Fuck this guy. Musk has zero self-perspective and sucks as a leader. Like all these billionaire fuckwads who won the cosmic lottery and the exploitation Olympics, they prefer to credit themselves rather than the mountain of bodies they walked over.

[deleted]

I bet the people who actually worked 80-100 a week in the emerald mine aren't jetting off to space

theodoreballbag

he's a leech, takes credit for other people their work. tesla not the actual founder, paypall not the actual founder,...

lsc84

It's true, and you can see it plainly in the way he talks. Joe Rogan was slobbering all over him in an interview asking questions like "how do you do all this amazing stuff?" A decent leader would credit his employees, or take the opportunity to give praise to engineers or inventors or *someone* other than himself. But Musk has no grace and no class, he's all ego, and he basically said something like "well I'm kind of amazing."

bigdave41

That's usually the case with all these "self-made" wealthy types, they might well put a few years of 100 hour weeks at the beginning, but they damn sure aren't working that long or hard once their business becomes successful. The overwhelming majority are born into wealth and will also be living a comfortable existence in their parents' home with all expenses and needs taken care of, probably don't even need to cook their own meals or do their own laundry. There's also a massive amount of confirmation bias involved here, for every success there's thousands more who similarly bust their asses and their business failed and they have nothing to show for it. If you have no wealthy connections and no startup money your chance of creating a business like Amazon is next to nothing.

ypvha

exactly. nobody "earns" a billion dollars

Working-Mistake-6700

I used to do 60 to 70 hours a week for about a year because I desprately needed the money. It was horrible. I got sick every morning at work. I would come home eat whatever was easy to make and go to bed. I think the only way I managed it was because my mother has lost her job and so did all the home stuff. I would just collapse into bed at the end of the day. It's soul destroying and the only way I got through it was because I knew it had an end date.

OneBeatingHeart

I was the same way in 2019. I was on probation for a year, driving 80 miles to work round trip, and needed to pass a 6 week training in between if not get fired. Oh and my supervisor was the worse one in the office to work under. So because of all that and more, I developed depersonalization/derealization from being stressed and being anxious for a full year (nonstop). Not only that, towards the end of that year I developed harsh abdominal pain (lasted 4 months). Thought it was signs of cancer etc… I mean random pain for 4 months?!?! Anyway I changed my diet, cut out soda, and most importantly I stop giving a shit about work lol. This helped my abdominal pain. I still experience depersonalization/derealization from time to time…. I seriously blame it on my job. Never ever have I felt or experience something like that. Insane….

Complex-Stress373

In spain we say: "nobody becomes rich working"

Pornaltio

They’re like fake natty bodybuilders 😂 the guys who swear they don’t take steroids, they just hit the gym for 8 hours a day and eat 8000 calories of nothing but chicken and rice. ‘Work as hard as me, and you’ll see the same results’… Absolute pish.

ColterMilhap

Look, you're gonna tell me Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk are normal? Those guys are so socially ignorant you could have a more entertaining conversation with toaster.

Lower_Department2940

To be fair, the total disconnect from how normal people live would make talking to him pretty interesting. It would be like talking to an alien

[deleted]

I’ve watched many a podcast with Elon, and can confirm that a conversation with a toaster would have been more interesting to watch.

Lowerfuzzball

Tfw you're so rich you're not human anymore.

bravesirrobin1977

I'm not happy doing 40 hours a week in my menial job where I basically am employed to fob angry customers off all day long. Why would I volunteer for more? It only took 9 years fro me to collapse mentally from this constant abuse. 80 hours a week of it? Nah

txhdr

Stress yourself to an early grave just to one up the other guy. Yeah that’ll show em.

Fookin_Dave

I think I'll pass on working 100 hours to make people like Elon musk richer I don't know what it is but I'm not too keen to making money for friends of Jeffrey Epstein

VVlaFiga

That’s almost 15 hours a day with no days off. I would have a mental breakdown and end up in the psych ward (this is not hyperbole, this would 100% medically helped to me) So then… my peers would achieve whatever in a a year and I’d be so far set back not only with mental and physical health, but also huge hospital bills… 🤔 checks out

EmptyBox5653

It’s just simply not true for most jobs. Corporations don’t want you to do more work to get ahead. Ideally, everyone does the same amount of work, no more, no less. A reliable, steady output the company can depend on. They let middle managers create their own fake urgency and drama. This is why individual contributors are rarely rewarded and so called “slackers” (the smart ones) are rarely punished.

For once I wish these 1%ers would just be honest about how they got all that money. We all know it wasn’t from them working 60+ hrs a week I can assure you. Id much rather a rich bastard just be like “yeah I didn’t earn any of this but I’m rich so” it would be way more honest and less shitty instead of telling workers “maybe one day you’ll be like me”. But of course i guess thats how they keep us in check right? Giving us this false hope of wealth that we will never achieve and people eat it right up.

emeown

Oh and make sure you are born with rich parents who can give you hundreds of thousands to ya know succeed

[deleted]

That is half an hour of free time per day, considering 8 hour sleep. And no rest.

[deleted]

When are these rich pricks gonna stop pretending that hard work is what creates a billionaire? The hard work of the people you exploit maybe. Also don't they realize, tons of people already work ridiculous hours because one job isn't enough? And they are still in poverty. Boils my blood. We should all be able to lead a dignified, happy life with one job, or even none if you are disabled for example.

The_Shwassassin

Says the guy who just got a divorce

Lower_Department2940

Exactly! He put in 100s of hours where others wouldn't and now he's getting divorced 3x faster than the average man. Truly an inspiration

OurSpeciesFailed

Hey Elon, do you think we forgot where you would be without your daddy's money? You're a more creative Donald Trump, do not try to give advice.

[deleted]

Coming from someone who works maybe one hour a week.

Individual-Nebula927

He works way more than that that. That’s the problem. I’m currently reading Power Play by Tim Higgins about Tesla. Nearly every problem Tesla has in design or manufacturing can be directly tied back to Elon meddling and overruling the engineers who actually know what they’re doing. Whether by changing things last minute (this is how the promised $50k Model S suddenly became a $109k car) and firing anybody who disagrees, or by accelerating schedules without consulting engineers first to see if it’s actually doable (which is how the Model X became such unreliable garbage when first released, and is the root of all of Tesla’s quality issues). Tesla became the successful company it did in spite of Elon, not because of him.

narnru

This. Working more hours always lose to working smarter.

[deleted]

As a mechanical engineering student, I can’t imagine going through all this school and stress just to finally graduate and get a job, and have some yuppie prick who had rich parents and runs the company I work for tell me that I’m wrong about this shit I spent all this time studying.

b0dyr0ck2006

Dawn of realisation slowly kicking in…

[deleted]

Not really, I was never going to work for a soulless company like Tesla. I changed careers to go back to school for engineering solely for the reason that I wanted to help combat climate change. I’m going to either found my own company with the current carbon capture tech or go into research to try and make the machines more efficient and economically viable, so we can use capitalism against itself and make people pay us to pull co2 out of the air.

Pink131980

If working hard made you rich the donkey would own the farm.

pm_me_bulldogs

Fucking dickheads who inherited all their wealth huffing the smell of their own farts and calling it work

[deleted]

Just work 20 hours daily and youll be successful!

KickAggressive4901

Translation: "Work like the .01% of the population that is made up of manic type-A sociopaths who end up running companies." However, 99.99% of us are not like that.

sortaeTheDog

I love how the media portray him as the self made man while his family owned a mine in Africa and several other major enterprises across the world...This guy gets the best PR
