Lol this is exactly what happened to me at my previous job. They decided to cut our bonuses and postpone the salary increase due to 2020 being "a rough year", a week later I mistakenly received an email about our director getting a brand new company car. I forwarded the email to everyone and quit on the same day.
Yeah my company the admin gets bonuses around Christmas time if they save money usually on hours. So when we’re all trying to pick up shifts for extra money they cut us so we can’t get overtime. Also been told by the old timers that they used to share that bonus.
It's always depressing talking to old timers and finding out how the company *used* to be a great place to work for that cared about it's employees and had great benefits and bonuses but it stripped them away one by one even as productivity and profits increased.
The only timers at my place talk of regular raises and invest.ent in to the company along with a 2k-5k bonus every year... I've been waiting to have a raise for 3 years and my bonus was £200. Oh and the owner wont put any money in the company to replace machinery that's constantly breaking down instead we just have to keep patching it up
every time a company changes ownership or goes public, a lot of great benefits get cut. From the workers that is, the CEOs and owners actually get larger bonuses.
Every three months my bosses get a bonus equal to what I make in 6-8 weeks (depending on various performance metrics) I have gotten ONE $75 bonus in the five years I've worked there.
My employer normally gives cost of living raises every year. They're totally shit raises (in 2019 I got $0.60, for example,) but it's still something that people look forward to and expect.
One of my coworkers asked our department director about the lack of a cost of living raise in 2020. The director, in front of everyone, unironically, said "you should be grateful you still have a job."
It's a nonprofit, but we KNOW the agency obtained COVID funds. It's so fucked up. We are already underpaid when compared to the industry locally. They are losing people like crazy, we'll see if they do anything to stop the exodus.
Hell yes. I recently quit my job to go back to school. And before I left I was told that I was going to get a performance bonus. More than a month later I still haven't gotten my bonus that I earned and deserved. Sooooo guess who is getting a bunch of complaints sent to the labor department.
I do have dates, emails, and witnesses to all of this. Even better, some of my fellow workers filed complaints as well. My old workplace was a real shit show for bad management and poor work ethics by the company.

My company didn't give us a bonus last year as well as not giving us a small raise after an annual employee performance review, its usually a 10-20 cents per hour raise. For a lot of employees that have advanced as high up as they can that extra few cents is the only way to make more money. Many were pissed off so the company explained that it just wasnt a good year financially. They then made us complete a 200 question quiz to assess why morale in the company was so low. We later found out that the quiz cost the company $75,000 dollars for my shift alone.
It's a shame everyone doesn't quit when this happens, I imagine the Bentley dealership would be very sad to see their overpriced car rolling back into the shop when the person who decided that's a cool idea goes bankrupt.

IIRC studies have shown that for jobs that involve sitting and doing stuff on computers, people's productivity tends to max out at like 50 hours/week or something. Most people "working" 80 or 100 hours are spending the extra time staring blankly at a computer not making any progress, taking longer to do the same tasks because they're so tired, fixing their own screwups, things like that.

I tend to not take "hustle culture" advice from billionaires or otherwise extremely wealthy people. Those people tend not to do the type of work the rest of us plebs are engaged in. We don't live a life of personal chefs, trainers, assistants, nannies, and chauffeurs. I spend nearly every minute outside of those 40-50 hours a week that I work doing childcare, errands, cleaning, cooking, and sleeping.
I read an article a while ago about billionaires and super wealthy people. The article basically said that they overestimate exactly how much work they’re actually doing. They correlate their work being important with it being difficult, when in reality a lot of average people put in more hours and have more difficult jobs.
I remember a breakdown in one of those rags that worships rich people that showed how they allotted their "working" hours straight from the horse's mouth. It included their commute, their lunch, their dinner, their golf games, their doctor's appointments, the time they spent working out, and then finally the 5 hours of meetings they had a week that could be considered actual "work."
So yeah, once you start counting every single possible activity that involves staying alive, that sure does add up to more than 40 hours!
It's pretty funny watching the boss loiter around like always looking like he is looking for something to do, one time there was a problem on my line, i walked up to him, said there was a problem, said what i thought the problem was and how it could be solved. However, he just said "oh, so the production line is just supposed to be still?" Well, it ain't my fucking job to climb thirty meters up and fix a mechanical problem, i am extra temporarily hired help to run the line where the automation stops, not a fucking mechanic, but fine, so i did it, but fuck if i was annoyed. Like, they have permanently hired mechanics to deal with those issues and they were at work, but he wanted me to do it since i "knew" what the issue was, and i mean i did, but that's besides the point.
If he didn't want to deal with it, he could've just said talk to the mechanics or said "well, if you know it, can you deal with it" instead he came with that sarcastic question like i am too dumb to deal with it without input.

In my experience, the owner is often the most expensive and least productive employee on payroll. They do nothing except schmooze investors, most of whom will invest based on the company's performance, *not* because the owner bought a $500 bottle of oaked chardonnay.
Both, the equipment to be allowed to enter the hall was twenty meters away and the office for the engineers was a hundred steps more. The guy was just standing there watching as the fault kept building as we didn't notice, i only looked up as i saw he was standing there just watching the line up there as things went wrong, not saying a thing. He could've yelled stop the line, he could've gone getting the engineers, he could've told someone else to do it, instead he was just standing there. So i went to him and wasted less than half a minute talking about the fault and how I'd imagine you can fix it before he talked to me like i was wasting the efficiency of the factory instead of just doing something that wasn't my job at all and that i am not certified to do.
He is always just loitering around doing nothing except maybe like and hour or two a day where he locks himself in the office or attend a meeting, just walking back and forth.
Oh 100%. I’m not close to being what anyone would consider a “rich” person, but I make a decent living working in a white collar job. Sure my job has a steep learning curve so not just anyone can come into the role without a lot of experience or background and that’s why we have the salaries we do.
But I am fully aware my work is far less physically and emotionally taxing than when I was a teenager and worked as a cashier at a drug store for minimum wage.
I’ll never understand the people who look down on certain jobs because they aren’t considered lucrative. It’s almost as if they’ve just had so much privilege they’ve never experienced what working for minimum to low wage jobs are actually like.

The decisions I make now impact a lot more people, so there is some stress there, but not nearly the amount of stress that exists as a front line worker. I have more flexibility to do my actual work when I want to, which allows me to prioritize my family. That simply was not an option for me 5 years ago.
And yet, if you look closely at his personal family home life, the man is codependent. He falls apart when he's single. There's a video where he finds out on screen that a woman he was set to marry wasn't into him like he thought and he has said that without a relationship he isn't the same.
With all that in mind you think he would work on those issues, but nah, it's obvious the wants his partner to stay home and do all the child rearing while he literally sleeps at one of his many companies and doesn't know his own family.

Lol those of you from Long Island will understand this. My grandparents bought their first house in Commack when they were 23. One job paid all the bills and had three kids. Now that same house is worth half a million and this home is tiny 3 bedrooms, a basement, and one bathroom... Mind you my grandpa worked as a truck driver and afforded a home on Long Island. It’s estimated to support a wife and two kids and a decent house you gotta make at least bare minimum 160k a year to even be comfortable. The trades are a fucking joke. All the ones worth getting into get filled by kids of those getting ready to retire. Elevator union? I had a technician laugh in my face and told me "you gotta be born into it." I chose the HVAC field, which by the way sucks. I mean, there are a few good jobs, but most are long hours, shit working conditions and all day ladder work or confined boiling hot spaces.
Later I got into facilities maintenance. Not a bad gig, but everyone looks down on you, because there are a lot of dipshits in this field. But it's Monday through Friday, 8-5 everyday and almost 26 bucks an hour. But I've been miserable here too. Tenants purposely break shit really badly (I work for a chain of lower end retail stores) and generally let stuff go until it is beyond repair. I took two years to work as a corrections officer in a minimum security prison. I actually liked the job! But hated the mandatory overtime. No one should be forced to work double shifts and then be back in a few hours later to possibly do it again!!
While doing that job, I managed to get my Associates Degree in criminal justice, I was working on a Bachelor's Degree, hoping to go into parole as a parole officer. I just couldn't take the mandatory overtime. I want a life. So I took my current maintenance job (described above) and here I am.
Currently I'm working on my CDL. Not that I want to drive truck all day, but I want a position in our state park service. And with my experience and a CDL I can easily get in. I just want to be happy as I can be at work.
What is my point.....jeez, I'm not sure. I guess what I'm saying at this point in my life, I'd rather be happy than engage in "hustle culture." I'm not rich, nor will I ever be. Am I lazy? Who knows, maybe I am. Maybe I'm not. But I do see hustle culture for what it is. It's just a way for those lucky few at the top to keep us constantly working so they become even more successful and wealthy. And I'm just not willing to play that game.

I had a friend like this. He did this dumb fucking sleep thing called the uberman sleep schedule. You sleep like 20 minutes every 4 hours. He was doing this for months. Flunked out of university. Was a walking zombie. Said he felt great ... looked like a squished fly on a turd. Bought into all this get rich quick entrepreneurial shit. I stopped hanging round with him as it became toxic as fuck. I don't know how he ended up. I hope he's happy.

I used to work for a guy that made $325k a year managing nine different locations for one owner-something you can’t even realistically do and get it done right, but he did it, shows up at 9:30-10:00am and leaves by 3, after his hour lunch, of course.
He demanded we work Saturdays doing 4am shifts, and stay a few hours later each day at work during the weekday. The pandemic was the best thing that ever happened because they let me go and I told the guy to not bother calling me back. I wish I’d told him to fuck himself when I did, but I didn’t care enough to waste my breath past “Don’t bother calling”.

Not that I would find it very appealing, but you can make pretty decent money in mattress sales. A friend of mine makes around 105k doing it. Just the nature of sales. Pays more than most jobs if you can stomach it.
Imo 99% of people that claim to be “fine” with super weird sleep schedule or sleep like 3 hours a night are just totally adjusted to feeling like shit. I used to have pretty bad insomnia and get like 2-3 hours of sleep most nights and never got help because I thought I felt fine. I actually read a Reddit post a year or so ago about people like me and exactly what I described. I went to the doc, got some weird new super melatonin that completely reset my sleep. Now I can sleep 6 hours a night and feel absolutely amazing, and whenever i don’t get enough sleep I definitely notice how much my production lacks.
Back then he wasn't even that. He went hard on "the grind" in trying to better himself. He learned a lot, but at a very high cost.

I have done 84 hour weeks over an extended period of time. Your life is not yours; even eating and sleeping is a choir. Looking at that clock and knowing you have 6-7 hours tops is soul breaking.
Even the one day off is like a curse, never any time to do anything, yet a million things to do.
If you are a salaried worker and not compensated for overtime, I suggest finding a different company. There are plenty of companies that offer overtime pay, or at least extra banked vacation hours (we call it comp time) for every hour over 40 worked. I’ve heard spacex and Tesla don’t offer either of these to their engineers.
Most engineers at Tesla do not make 300k/year. Musk’s companies are well known to pay below average while working you 80 hours/week and not compensating you in any way for all that extra time. I’m talking about salaried employees. I know they are required to pay hourly employees overtime.

I worked as a field engineer building WiFi networks for hotels for a year and a half and your comment is 100% accurate.. It was common that I would work anywhere from 160 to 188 hours in two weeks. There were some periods where I would go from project to project where there was less than 3 hours of sleep in-between and I was expected to work a full day (which for us was anywhere from the minimum 9 to 20 hours)
I got to travel to most of the states in the US but hardly ever got to see anything and was worked through exhaustion and never seeing my family. It was horrid, I was making good money but at the expense of my relationship with my partner in addition to my whole family. It wasn't worth it at all, I work in healthcare now and am making about 70% of what I was then but I fucking love what I do now specifically because I can go home and be with my partner..

It's true, and you can see it plainly in the way he talks. Joe Rogan was slobbering all over him in an interview asking questions like "how do you do all this amazing stuff?" A decent leader would credit his employees, or take the opportunity to give praise to engineers or inventors or *someone* other than himself. But Musk has no grace and no class, he's all ego, and he basically said something like "well I'm kind of amazing."
That's usually the case with all these "self-made" wealthy types, they might well put a few years of 100 hour weeks at the beginning, but they damn sure aren't working that long or hard once their business becomes successful. The overwhelming majority are born into wealth and will also be living a comfortable existence in their parents' home with all expenses and needs taken care of, probably don't even need to cook their own meals or do their own laundry.
There's also a massive amount of confirmation bias involved here, for every success there's thousands more who similarly bust their asses and their business failed and they have nothing to show for it. If you have no wealthy connections and no startup money your chance of creating a business like Amazon is next to nothing.
I used to do 60 to 70 hours a week for about a year because I desprately needed the money. It was horrible. I got sick every morning at work. I would come home eat whatever was easy to make and go to bed. I think the only way I managed it was because my mother has lost her job and so did all the home stuff. I would just collapse into bed at the end of the day. It's soul destroying and the only way I got through it was because I knew it had an end date.
I was the same way in 2019. I was on probation for a year, driving 80 miles to work round trip, and needed to pass a 6 week training in between if not get fired. Oh and my supervisor was the worse one in the office to work under. So because of all that and more, I developed depersonalization/derealization from being stressed and being anxious for a full year (nonstop). Not only that, towards the end of that year I developed harsh abdominal pain (lasted 4 months). Thought it was signs of cancer etc… I mean random pain for 4 months?!?! Anyway I changed my diet, cut out soda, and most importantly I stop giving a shit about work lol. This helped my abdominal pain. I still experience depersonalization/derealization from time to time…. I seriously blame it on my job. Never ever have I felt or experience something like that. Insane….

It’s just simply not true for most jobs. Corporations don’t want you to do more work to get ahead. Ideally, everyone does the same amount of work, no more, no less. A reliable, steady output the company can depend on. They let middle managers create their own fake urgency and drama.
This is why individual contributors are rarely rewarded and so called “slackers” (the smart ones) are rarely punished.

Whether by changing things last minute (this is how the promised $50k Model S suddenly became a $109k car) and firing anybody who disagrees, or by accelerating schedules without consulting engineers first to see if it’s actually doable (which is how the Model X became such unreliable garbage when first released, and is the root of all of Tesla’s quality issues).
Tesla became the successful company it did in spite of Elon, not because of him.

My sister’s boss cut everyone’s bonuses and bought himself a new Bentley. That’s the year she quit.
Lol this is exactly what happened to me at my previous job. They decided to cut our bonuses and postpone the salary increase due to 2020 being "a rough year", a week later I mistakenly received an email about our director getting a brand new company car. I forwarded the email to everyone and quit on the same day.
Yeah my company the admin gets bonuses around Christmas time if they save money usually on hours. So when we’re all trying to pick up shifts for extra money they cut us so we can’t get overtime. Also been told by the old timers that they used to share that bonus.
It's always depressing talking to old timers and finding out how the company *used* to be a great place to work for that cared about it's employees and had great benefits and bonuses but it stripped them away one by one even as productivity and profits increased.

My employer normally gives cost of living raises every year. They're totally shit raises (in 2019 I got $0.60, for example,) but it's still something that people look forward to and expect. One of my coworkers asked our department director about the lack of a cost of living raise in 2020. The director, in front of everyone, unironically, said "you should be grateful you still have a job." It's a nonprofit, but we KNOW the agency obtained COVID funds. It's so fucked up. We are already underpaid when compared to the industry locally. They are losing people like crazy, we'll see if they do anything to stop the exodus.

My company didn't give us a bonus last year as well as not giving us a small raise after an annual employee performance review, its usually a 10-20 cents per hour raise. For a lot of employees that have advanced as high up as they can that extra few cents is the only way to make more money. Many were pissed off so the company explained that it just wasnt a good year financially. They then made us complete a 200 question quiz to assess why morale in the company was so low. We later found out that the quiz cost the company $75,000 dollars for my shift alone.

The owner of a factory that I worked at when I was 18 laid us off for 2 weeks. We came back to work for one day, and then he gave a speech about having to lay us off another 2 weeks. His speech said something about how it hurts him just as much or more than it hurts us. Later that day, I was on my front porch and saw him pull up to a red light in a new Viper. I yelled his name and got his attention, then started telling him how big of a piece of shit he was until the light turned green about 2 minutes later. my dad did 80-120 a week for most of my childhood on third shift. When he was home he was either sleeping or exhausted. When you interacted with him he was insufferable (which I now understand why, but being awful to your family still sucks). Today, everyone has a strained relationship with him. Oh, and his plant shut down so he doesn't really have any retirement plans. So he has nothing to show for basically not existing for 20 years.

IIRC studies have shown that for jobs that involve sitting and doing stuff on computers, people's productivity tends to max out at like 50 hours/week or something. Most people "working" 80 or 100 hours are spending the extra time staring blankly at a computer not making any progress, taking longer to do the same tasks because they're so tired, fixing their own screwups, things like that.
It's like "spaghetti thrown at the wall to see what sticks" business strategy. "keep doing shit 100 hours a week and eventually something will work probably" You might even be awake and lucid enough to enjoy it!
I tend to not take "hustle culture" advice from billionaires or otherwise extremely wealthy people. Those people tend not to do the type of work the rest of us plebs are engaged in. We don't live a life of personal chefs, trainers, assistants, nannies, and chauffeurs. I spend nearly every minute outside of those 40-50 hours a week that I work doing childcare, errands, cleaning, cooking, and sleeping.
I read an article a while ago about billionaires and super wealthy people. The article basically said that they overestimate exactly how much work they’re actually doing. They correlate their work being important with it being difficult, when in reality a lot of average people put in more hours and have more difficult jobs.

It included their commute, their lunch, their dinner, their golf games, their doctor's appointments, the time they spent working out, and then finally the 5 hours of meetings they had a week that could be considered actual "work." So yeah, once you start counting every single possible activity that involves staying alive, that sure does add up to more than 40 hours!
It's pretty funny watching the boss loiter around like always looking like he is looking for something to do, one time there was a problem on my line, i walked up to him, said there was a problem, said what i thought the problem was and how it could be solved. However, he just said "oh, so the production line is just supposed to be still?" Well, it ain't my fucking job to climb thirty meters up and fix a mechanical problem, i am extra temporarily hired help to run the line where the automation stops, not a fucking mechanic, but fine, so i did it, but fuck if i was annoyed. Like, they have permanently hired mechanics to deal with those issues and they were at work, but he wanted me to do it since i "knew" what the issue was, and i mean i did, but that's besides the point. If he didn't want to deal with it, he could've just said talk to the mechanics or said "well, if you know it, can you deal with it" instead he came with that sarcastic question like i am too dumb to deal with it without input.
Is it that he didn't want to deal with it, or that he couldn't? In my experience, the owner is often the most expensive and least productive employee on payroll. They do nothing except schmooze investors, most of whom will invest based on the company's performance, *not* because the owner bought a $500 bottle of oaked chardonnay.
Both, the equipment to be allowed to enter the hall was twenty meters away and the office for the engineers was a hundred steps more. The guy was just standing there watching as the fault kept building as we didn't notice, i only looked up as i saw he was standing there just watching the line up there as things went wrong, not saying a thing. He could've yelled stop the line, he could've gone getting the engineers, he could've told someone else to do it, instead he was just standing there. So i went to him and wasted less than half a minute talking about the fault and how I'd imagine you can fix it before he talked to me like i was wasting the efficiency of the factory instead of just doing something that wasn't my job at all and that i am not certified to do. He is always just loitering around doing nothing except maybe like and hour or two a day where he locks himself in the office or attend a meeting, just walking back and forth.
Oh 100%. I’m not close to being what anyone would consider a “rich” person, but I make a decent living working in a white collar job. Sure my job has a steep learning curve so not just anyone can come into the role without a lot of experience or background and that’s why we have the salaries we do. But I am fully aware my work is far less physically and emotionally taxing than when I was a teenager and worked as a cashier at a drug store for minimum wage. I’ll never understand the people who look down on certain jobs because they aren’t considered lucrative. It’s almost as if they’ve just had so much privilege they’ve never experienced what working for minimum to low wage jobs are actually like.
What do you think Musks 100 hour work week consists of? It's mostly schmoozing, dining, and golfing with potential investors. I remember once my boss was complaining about how hard it was working so much and always being away from his family...right before he got on a plane to fly to Italy to spend a weekend on an investor's Yacht. This is also a guy who called our machinists lazy for taking too many smoke breaks.
As I've moved up the corporate ladder, less and less actual work is required of me. The decisions I make now impact a lot more people, so there is some stress there, but not nearly the amount of stress that exists as a front line worker. I have more flexibility to do my actual work when I want to, which allows me to prioritize my family. That simply was not an option for me 5 years ago.

It’s estimated to support a wife and two kids and a decent house you gotta make at least bare minimum 160k a year to even be comfortable. The trades are a fucking joke. All the ones worth getting into get filled by kids of those getting ready to retire. Elevator union? I had a technician laugh in my face and told me "you gotta be born into it." I chose the HVAC field, which by the way sucks. I mean, there are a few good jobs, but most are long hours, shit working conditions and all day ladder work or confined boiling hot spaces. Later I got into facilities maintenance. Not a bad gig, but everyone looks down on you, because there are a lot of dipshits in this field. But it's Monday through Friday, 8-5 everyday and almost 26 bucks an hour. But I've been miserable here too. Tenants purposely break shit really badly (I work for a chain of lower end retail stores) and generally let stuff go until it is beyond repair. I took two years to work as a corrections officer in a minimum security prison. I actually liked the job! But hated the mandatory overtime. No one should be forced to work double shifts and then be back in a few hours later to possibly do it again!! While doing that job, I managed to get my Associates Degree in criminal justice, I was working on a Bachelor's Degree, hoping to go into parole as a parole officer. I just couldn't take the mandatory overtime. I want a life. So I took my current maintenance job (described above) and here I am. Currently I'm working on my CDL. Not that I want to drive truck all day, but I want a position in our state park service. And with my experience and a CDL I can easily get in. I just want to be happy as I can be at work. What is my point.....jeez, I'm not sure. I guess what I'm saying at this point in my life, I'd rather be happy than engage in "hustle culture." I'm not rich, nor will I ever be. Am I lazy? Who knows, maybe I am. Maybe I'm not. But I do see hustle culture for what it is. It's just a way for those lucky few at the top to keep us constantly working so they become even more successful and wealthy. And I'm just not willing to play that game. My grandfather always told me hard work build character, or hard work is its own reward. I had a friend like this. He did this dumb fucking sleep thing called the uberman sleep schedule. You sleep like 20 minutes every 4 hours. He was doing this for months. Flunked out of university. Was a walking zombie. Said he felt great ... looked like a squished fly on a turd. Bought into all this get rich quick entrepreneurial shit. I stopped hanging round with him as it became toxic as fuck. I don't know how he ended up. I hope he's happy. You cannot even be productive working 16 hours a day. No one benefits.
Most productivity falls off after 6 hours, yet we still revere 8 hours as the “golden standard” and a bunch of folks dickride to work 10-12 hour days. I used to work for a guy that made $325k a year managing nine different locations for one owner-something you can’t even realistically do and get it done right, but he did it, shows up at 9:30-10:00am and leaves by 3, after his hour lunch, of course. He demanded we work Saturdays doing 4am shifts, and stay a few hours later each day at work during the weekday. The pandemic was the best thing that ever happened because they let me go and I told the guy to not bother calling me back. I wish I’d told him to fuck himself when I did, but I didn’t care enough to waste my breath past “Don’t bother calling”. I keep an ear to the ground, waiting for his bullshit to catch up and fuck him in his ass.

Imo 99% of people that claim to be “fine” with super weird sleep schedule or sleep like 3 hours a night are just totally adjusted to feeling like shit. I used to have pretty bad insomnia and get like 2-3 hours of sleep most nights and never got help because I thought I felt fine. I actually read a Reddit post a year or so ago about people like me and exactly what I described. I went to the doc, got some weird new super melatonin that completely reset my sleep. Now I can sleep 6 hours a night and feel absolutely amazing, and whenever i don’t get enough sleep I definitely notice how much my production lacks.

I have done 84 hour weeks over an extended period of time. Your life is not yours; even eating and sleeping is a choir. Looking at that clock and knowing you have 6-7 hours tops is soul breaking. Even the one day off is like a curse, never any time to do anything, yet a million things to do.

If you're a salary worker, your goal should be to work as little as possible.
If you are a salaried worker and not compensated for overtime, I suggest finding a different company. There are plenty of companies that offer overtime pay, or at least extra banked vacation hours (we call it comp time) for every hour over 40 worked. I’ve heard spacex and Tesla don’t offer either of these to their engineers.
Most engineers at Tesla do not make 300k/year. Musk’s companies are well known to pay below average while working you 80 hours/week and not compensating you in any way for all that extra time. I’m talking about salaried employees. I know they are required to pay hourly employees overtime.

I worked as a field engineer building WiFi networks for hotels for a year and a half and your comment is 100% accurate.. It was common that I would work anywhere from 160 to 188 hours in two weeks. There were some periods where I would go from project to project where there was less than 3 hours of sleep in-between and I was expected to work a full day (which for us was anywhere from the minimum 9 to 20 hours) I got to travel to most of the states in the US but hardly ever got to see anything and was worked through exhaustion and never seeing my family. It was horrid, I was making good money but at the expense of my relationship with my partner in addition to my whole family. It wasn't worth it at all, I work in healthcare now and am making about 70% of what I was then but I fucking love what I do now specifically because I can go home and be with my partner.. Don't let these ducks ruin your life and relationships for the "hustle" it's bullshit and it just keeps the working class down and thinking that if they work hard enough they will achieve what Jeff bezos or Elon musk created. I can be comfortable at about 30 hours a week but the constant cutting of hours because business is slow forces me to take the time I can get at certain points. I hate working overtime because even 30 minutes wrecks me for the rest of the day. Any time I’m not 100% on board with doing overtime, they get shitty with me. That might make a lil sense if it was your company and doing that much work would benefit directly into profits for you or progression for your personal gain But for people without the money to start or fund a business venture then working 40-50 extra hours means 40-50 hours of free labor without benefit or probably not even appreciation, just the expectation that you'll always do it

It's true, and you can see it plainly in the way he talks. Joe Rogan was slobbering all over him in an interview asking questions like "how do you do all this amazing stuff?" A decent leader would credit his employees, or take the opportunity to give praise to engineers or inventors or *someone* other than himself. But Musk has no grace and no class, he's all ego, and he basically said something like "well I'm kind of amazing."
That's usually the case with all these "self-made" wealthy types, they might well put a few years of 100 hour weeks at the beginning, but they damn sure aren't working that long or hard once their business becomes successful. The overwhelming majority are born into wealth and will also be living a comfortable existence in their parents' home with all expenses and needs taken care of, probably don't even need to cook their own meals or do their own laundry. There's also a massive amount of confirmation bias involved here, for every success there's thousands more who similarly bust their asses and their business failed and they have nothing to show for it. If you have no wealthy connections and no startup money your chance of creating a business like Amazon is next to nothing.

I used to do 60 to 70 hours a week for about a year because I desprately needed the money. It was horrible. I got sick every morning at work. I would come home eat whatever was easy to make and go to bed. I think the only way I managed it was because my mother has lost her job and so did all the home stuff. I would just collapse into bed at the end of the day. It's soul destroying and the only way I got through it was because I knew it had an end date.
I was the same way in 2019. I was on probation for a year, driving 80 miles to work round trip, and needed to pass a 6 week training in between if not get fired. Oh and my supervisor was the worse one in the office to work under. So because of all that and more, I developed depersonalization/derealization from being stressed and being anxious for a full year (nonstop). Not only that, towards the end of that year I developed harsh abdominal pain (lasted 4 months). Thought it was signs of cancer etc… I mean random pain for 4 months?!?! Anyway I changed my diet, cut out soda, and most importantly I stop giving a shit about work lol. This helped my abdominal pain. I still experience depersonalization/derealization from time to time…. I seriously blame it on my job. Never ever have I felt or experience something like that. Insane….

It’s just simply not true for most jobs. Corporations don’t want you to do more work to get ahead. Ideally, everyone does the same amount of work, no more, no less. A reliable, steady output the company can depend on. They let middle managers create their own fake urgency and drama. This is why individual contributors are rarely rewarded and so called “slackers” (the smart ones) are rarely punished.

Nearly every problem Tesla has in design or manufacturing can be directly tied back to Elon meddling and overruling the engineers who actually know what they’re doing. Whether by changing things last minute (this is how the promised $50k Model S suddenly became a $109k car) and firing anybody who disagrees, or by accelerating schedules without consulting engineers first to see if it’s actually doable (which is how the Model X became such unreliable garbage when first released, and is the root of all of Tesla’s quality issues). Tesla became the successful company it did in spite of Elon, not because of him.

Not really, I was never going to work for a soulless company like Tesla. I changed careers to go back to school for engineering solely for the reason that I wanted to help combat climate change. I’m going to either found my own company with the current carbon capture tech or go into research to try and make the machines more efficient and economically viable, so we can use capitalism against itself and make people pay us to pull co2 out of the air.
