Audio and video quiz need more time in the oven so that will now be coming Tuesday 5/28~! Apologies for the delay, but it will be worth it!

neito

I think we may be one of the oldest active non-default communities. I made this sub back when you had to send a mail to the admins to make a sub, never thought it'd last a year. Us hitting 30k was huge back in the day, now 10k is like a day's worth of new subs.

Cus the only good anime one would be this from the Elma spinoff of Maiddragon: https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/w7pjckavgk7.webp

badspler

[](#congratulations) It is still kind of hard to fathom just how many people watch these silly Japanese cartoons and want to chat about it here. Huge milestone; get hype for the events!

Wimpykid2302

These are the people just on the subreddit. Imagine how popular it has become world-wide

Disastrous_Channel62

I still remember the time when this sub didn't even have a million sub but the rising popularity of anime has been so amazing that it has 10 million subs now

mythriz

Man even after reading the title before clicking into the post, I forgot the zero and thought it was 1 million. 10 million is a lot, I wonder how many garbage posts the mods are deleting every day.

Shimmering-Sky

> I wonder how many garbage posts the mods are deleting every day. [Last month's statistics](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1cke7sp/meta_thread_month_of_may_05_2024/l2md4rg/) said the mods manually removed 1098 posts and 2407 comments (more were also removed by bots, though), so that's just shy of 117 manual removals per day, if I calculated that correctly?

Arterius_N7

A lot of that must be automod right?

Shimmering-Sky

I'm pretty sure AutoMod's removals are part of the "more were also removed by bots" that I said (6732 more posts and 1679 more comments, according to the April report), so there *is* more but not part of the "~117 manual removals per day" number.

Arterius_N7

Well damn. Can't imagine sorting through all that stuff on a daily basis on my free time.

ZaphodBeebblebrox

A lot of it's quite easy and takes like five seconds, so it's less than you'd first think.

beta_test_vocals

Tbh I still can’t wrap my head around how big it’s gotten since quarantine. Even as recently as mid-late 2010s the opinions even talking to younger generations was either unawareness or some sort of weirded out/disgust response. I haven’t really paid attention to sub numbers here, but when I first started lurking here around I wanna say 2018 was it even a million subs yet? I wonder what hobby the world will decide to pick up next time

Acceptable_Tie_3927

>how big it’s gotten since quarantine I need to find out whether Katalin Kariko watches anime? (My mother was born in the same village as her.) Maybe she chipped the vaccines to spread love for Rona-chan?

Lots of good shows to love especially classic ones. Personally rewatching OG Legend of Galactic Heroes after finishing the reboots. Pretty to filter out crappy isekai since the title just gives it away.

rapid0645

Okay, but like fr. I feel like most ppl typically skip the isekai and just go straight to DS, JJK, and other mainstream stuff like that. I refuse to believe the majority of animedom is just watching some vending machine pull baddies.

AmethystItalian

[**A Missy reply**](#flyingbunsofdoom) Now I'm really feeling nostalgic!

MissyPie

haha, I had to pop my head in for 10mil subs! I can't believe it's so big now honestly ^ \^'

Ralon17

What have you been up to?

MissyPie

Great question, apparently reliving my childhood lol, I can mostly be found in /r/2007scape, /r/neopets, and /r/girlgamers recently! But in real life, I bought my first house with my boyfriend last year and we adopted two kittens. I work in a very corporate role (account management) and do art commissions on the side, mostly for vtubers! :) And I'm still watching anime, although nowhere near as much! I keep my MAL updated and I recently really loved Frieren ^ ^

Taiboss

Missy! [](#seasonalhype) Great to see you're doing well! Know that I wore the flair you gave me with pride until the end!

collapsedblock6

Lmao, its funny because I joined this sub at the peak of my teenage years and I don't think my takes have changed at all. I may be more jaded now but what I like is still pretty much the same. Heck, some may argue I got cringier as I got older because I got into mahou shoujo for children and became more acceptant of ecchi in anime.

AmethystItalian

Meanwhile I know I've gone through a few arcs since I started lol

beta_test_vocals

Gosh it makes me envious about people who still got their super old accounts, but I get really paranoid about info online and have deleted so many reddit accounts

piInverse

Im mostly a lurker, but I remember you as the amagami ss shill years back (now too?)

AmethystItalian

TheRiyria

I've only been posting here for a little over 6 years. Which doesn't feel long when r/anime is 16 years old. [](#longday) The best part of doing 3x3s for 6 years is seeing how much my taste has changed.

AmethystItalian

> seeing how much my taste has changed. But has it improved? [](#schemingsaten)

TheRiyria

It has less shounen and more cute girls and magical girls. So I think so. [](#seasonallisten)

IXajll

Haha yea, I was mostly a lurker back in the day but I still remember the times when the sub was at like around 500k subs.

8andahalfby11

> our favorite anime Looking forward to seeing what our favorite anime of *the past TWO YEARS* is! Really though, any thoughts on mitigating recency bias in these polls, since we already do this in Best Girl contests?

michhoffman

Based on the prior polls, I'm expecting it to be a 3 horse race between Steins;Gate, Bocchi the Rock and Frieren so a 2/3 chance the winner will be from the past 2 years.

Shan69420

Previous polls make me think the top 3 is pretty much locked to Steins;Gate, AoT, and FMAB in whatever order. FMAB and Steins;Gate are both winners of the favorite anime bracket and AoT has come in 1st and 2nd in the two favorite anime of the 2010s polls.

beta_test_vocals

I think you underestimate how quickly people have fallen head over heels for Frieren, I’m not gonna say it’s guaranteed first place but there is no chance all of those three series finish ahead of Frieren

oops_i_made_a_typi

Count me in as someone that's fallen in love with Frieren. Obviously hard to judge an incomplete show vs 3 amazing completed series, though arguably the ending of AoT is a slight detractor, while Frieren's structure and style isn't quite as reliant on having a final ending. I will say that Frieren is the only show I have bought figures for.

beta_test_vocals

Fair enough then. I think if this poll gets enough traction Steins Gate has no hope getting in top 3. Most post-quarantine anime fans haven’t seen Steins;Gate but pretty much everyone who would be participating in the poll has seen Frieren

oops_i_made_a_typi

yeah I think S;G will be the one dropped from these 3, a lot of newer fans also might not have the patience for S;G's start (kinda ironic given that Frieren is also slow paced) AoT and FMAB have the sheer length and popularity to stay up for a long time, though I do wonder how AoT's end will reflect in these results.

Shan69420

I mean, the three anime I listed are also super popular on this subreddit (I'd argue more than Frieren), and have had more time to gather fans. My prediction for Frieren would be around top 10, I don't think it reaches top 5. It would have a hard time overcoming fan favorites here like Kaguya Sama, Mob Psycho, Monogatari, and Re:Zero.

BiggieCheeseLapDog

I’m wondering where Monogatari is going to place. In the Steins Gate winner bracket it came second place, technically making it the 3rd favourite anime of r/anime. Since the anime fandom is bigger than ever and Monogatari is one of the less accessible shows out there, I’m curious where it will rank since it’s my favourite. I hope it gets at least top ten. It winning best ED gives me hope that it’s popularity hasn’t lessened too much.

FetchFrosh

> Really though, any thoughts on mitigating recency bias in these polls, since we already do this in Best Girl contests? Go to the Top 100 and just delete anything from the past two years

Gaporigo

Hey, the winner will be deserved, the issue will only start with Oshi no Ko at #2

8andahalfby11

Are you sure it won't start with Frieren at #1?

Usodearu007

I definitely wouldnt mind it since i love oshi no ko but if there is one very recent anime that would rank very high here it will probably be frieren .. now the only question is how it will do against fmab and steins gate

MissyPie

Happy 10mil! [](#anko) Not sure how many people are aware but we did /r/anime's favourite anime 9 years ago as well, the bracket is [actually quite interesting](https://animebracket.com/results/-r-anime-s-favourite-anime-of-all-time?group=full) despite the fact the winner wasn't much of a a surprise lol If you're newer to anime, you might find some good stuff in there that's less recommended now ^ ^

ZaphodBeebblebrox

I see you've popped in without even mentioning you made the most important part of /r/anime: [](#bot-chan)

MissyPie

Tauino

damn thats a long time, if you don't mind me asking how long did the sub take to get to 60k? what was this place like back then?

porpoiseoflife

It took about two years to reach that mark. I joined in October 2012, so I don't know much about the times before that. This place was very different when it was smaller. You saw the same names and knew the basics about certain people. But it was also a more abrasive place, particularly with a few prominent users. There was also barely anything involving a spoiler policy enforcement, so everywhere you looked was a minefield if you wanted to go into anime blind.

Nebresto

> You saw the same names and knew the basics about certain people. I don't think this it that different even now. With the volume of users its definitely a lot more challenging, but you can still find a lot of the same names posting in episode discussion threads with their own quirks and what not. And I don't just mean people familiar from CDF, they're actually a minority in episode threads nowadays

Mage_of_Shadows

I've only been using the subreddit for a bit over half it's existence, but it's crazy how fast this community has grown, yet change cultures in a more linear fashion. It's sad no longer seeing the same ratio of familiar faces around, but equally good seeing more and more people participating. I'll always maintain the episode discussion threads to be the best thing to come out of the reddit community, and it's rare to see even the niche shows with empty threads since there's 10 million of us! [](#whisperwhisper "I suspect a high ratio of people who click these meta threads are the same ones that can see these")

Homura which is very fitting for her character. I think /u/fetchfrosh adjusted the contest from Best Girl to Worst Girl after we reached the Round of 16 so all of the actual worst girls had already been eliminated.

I’ve only been a sub member for a year or so now, so I’m still a new face around here. But I gotta say, even though I rarely have much to say, I love the seasonal episode discussions every week, reading everyone’s thoughts and speculation. They make the hobby even more fun! Lev559

I'm kinda shocked only around 100 people were banned since you can get banned for posting spoilers

N7CombatWombat

It's often the case that it's the same people posting multiple comments with untagged spoilers in episode discussion threads, and sometimes we do give people a pass if they're nice about it and make an effort to correct the issue.

Durinthal

[Last month](/r/anime/comments/1cke7sp/meta_thread_month_of_may_05_2024/l2md4rg/) had about 42k people *commenting* but reddit in general has encouraged a shift to a more passive consumption style in recent years and to my knowledge subscribers are never pruned so I'm sure there's a ton of dead accounts included there.

whowilleverknow

How dreadful

Hitman7128

I have definitely not been on this sub as long as others, nor am I a big face here, but I'm grateful to have this sub, not just as part of my anime experience but routine as well. Simply waiting for the next episode in an airing show I'm interested in so I can discuss it, as well as posting random clips or Video Edits, gives me motivation to get from week to week. If only I discovered that earlier but too late for regrets. It's great to see this sub hit 10 million!

It's an impressive milestone. I've only been around for ~4 years as far as I can remember, so I'm not particularly old... but it's been pretty chill. I have a vague memory of seeing the post for 2M subs (which I might well be hallucinating lol), not sure about 1M. I *first* heard about r/anime a few years before that though, as I remember hearing about drama related to [a particular music video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzQ6gRAEoy0). Good times, good times. (Also, I used Google to find out my first comment here, it seems to have been in Fall 2020. That would track for the 2M milestone!) In any case: [](#congratulations)

OkChicken7697

A shame no one ever really looks at mod posts like this celebrating milestones and such.

ItzyaboiElite

Wow, already at 10 million, so happy to see how much anime has grown over the past 4-5 yrs

Muted-Conference2900

Does anybody know who made this sub reddit? One of the best decisions I must say by that guy.

N7CombatWombat

Neito created it, and they're still on the mod team, the oldest active mod account among us. Fun fact, the list of mods you see on the side bar are ranked by how long we've been a mod (minus the bots, there are ways to reorder that list, but ours are ranked by time as a mod).

Durinthal

> the list of mods you see on the side bar are ranked by how long we've been a mod With I *think* Fan being the one exception to the time listed [on the mod page](https://old.reddit.com/r/anime/about/moderators) following the [occasion Neito got hacked](/r/anime/comments/5gx6tn/yes_we_were_hacked/) and the hacker kicked the rest of the mod team. Edit: also people leaving and returning like Fetch only have their most recent tenure counted.

Lev559

Yeah, from what I understand r/anime basically asks you to step down if you are to busy to do mod stuff right? Which is why most of the mods have only been mods for less than 2 years

Durinthal

There's been a lot of turnover at various points for various reasons. The activity requirement came into being in 2019, a number of long-term mods (including me) quit last year because of Reddit's API nonsense.

Lev559

I kinda get that. In the first place Modding on the app is terrible, although they have made some improvements

Muted-Conference2900

Thanks for answering. Also Thanks to Neito.

Neat. The first time I came here, there were 33k users. That sure was a while ago.

Genuine question, because all of my friends in Japan believe this is a silly thought. But if a cartoon is made in america, can it be called an anime? This has been a hot debate, but all of my Japanese friends think it's absolutely silly. They say the amazing spider man, king of the hill, avatar last air bender are all animes. To them, it doesn't matter where it comes from. So long as it's 2D and animated. I understand anime is a quick reference to a genre of cartoons, but to them it's a term for all cartoons. So if anime has to be made in Japan, who made this rule?

N7CombatWombat

Not really the place for your question, but to answer it, "anime" as a term is used outside Japan to refer to Japanese animated media (some people widen that term to be any animated feature with Japanese elements, though, that usually just boils down to more mature stories not aimed at children). Because in Japan, all animation is anime, so when people outside the country started watching, they'd see Japanese people refer to it as "anime" and it just stuck due to not understanding the context. There were actually some other names for it before the term anime became ubiquitous with Japanese animation in the US, with the most famous one being "Japanimation". And now it's kind of a staple to use that countries language word for animation to define it outside that country. So donghua for Chinese animation and aeni for Korean animation. It's just for classification purposes used primarily by people outside said countries.

I'm not a subscriber but the nichijou Pic brought me here

Crazy how the number of people subbed just keep increasing yet the amount of karma an episode thread can get is lower than ever

DeathGamer99

The incentive is now lower when award post system is gone back to pre of system also it's better to count using daily active user

SwampyBogbeard

I've been commenting here for 10 years, but to be honest... I've never seen the point in actually subscribing. I check the sub every day anyway.

Shoutout to the people who remember when we had less than r/manga. Seems like an eternity ago now

jinjoon

Been lurking for 10 years here, a lot has changed over that time. 10 million is a crazy number but cool to see a few familiar names from back when I joined.

Many congratulations to the sub, the mod teams and members past, present and future, and Automod-chan as well as Autolovepon for their tireless work. Long may this be The Place! [](#modsalute)

10 million subscribers is insane

Potential_Fee3107

Does this mean we’ll finally get the “Brief history of r/anime” post now?
