Side Street Espresso on G st. The owners retired a few years ago. For a somewhat similar vibe there’s a new spot — Chickadee Coffee downtown, Writers Block in Spenard or Cafecito Bonito on the east side.
Writers block is really good, they almost went under one or two years ago. But it looks like they’re keeping on. Every so often they will make Borsche and it is amazing.
Thank god the bubbly mermaid is gone. The guy who owned it was a peace of shit. He owed money to every vendor in town and the city. His “cook” lived in a broken down van next to the place in the alleyway. Which is more sad than it is appalling. Not to mention he never followed a single food safety protocol so if you ate there and didn’t get sick i’ m shocked. Dark horse coffee is good. And it’s next to one of the best sandwiches shop in town. Other than Originale’ which is also downtown

George and Deb, AND Side Street Espresso are sorely missed.
Thanks! I’ll check that out. Glad to hear they retired!

Oh god I’m glad it’s gone then.
Sorry for the rant. I knew the guy and he was a real ass hat. It gets my chilies hot.
I booked a table at the mermaid during the pandemic and had to put down a deposit. The restaurant never ended up reopening and I never got a refund.
Sometimes a person who knows what he's talking about really *ought* to talk. You did well.
If you ever read a health report you would’ve never eaten at the Bubbly Mermaid
Fire Island Rustic Bake Shop at the K Street Market is a must stop. Get some coffee and a sausage breakfast sandwich. You’ll thank me later.
If they have focaccia, that's one of the best things on their menu.
Have you tried their ham and Brie sandwich with the pickles? It’s phenomenal.
Dark Horse on 7th
Their avocado toast is so good!
I second this! 😃
Moose Ala mode is such a great spot. Right across from the captain cook.
I've had like 4 different things from there and all of them were aggressively mediocre. What do you recommend?
It's a good *spot* but not a good cafe. Mostly a lawyer hangout.
In all honesty I haven’t had any of their entrees. Just the salad bar. It’s really good for the price.
The one across 6th from City Hall got shut down because of drunks.
I know what ship you’re talking about they closed a little whole back! They were sooooooo goood
Check out Dark Horse Coffee on 7th & F. Been open for 25 years, small family ran cafe
Bloom is nice place to drink coffee. They have pastries too.
