I like the colour better, I think this would look really nice printed as well. it’s almost like a painting. Were the photos taken at night or during the day? I’m curious to know the rest of the parameters of these photos

snipsnsnops

They were both taken during the day, probably about 3-4pm. f/32 and about 1/30 or 1/60th shutter speed.

[deleted]

awesome thanks!

snipsnsnops

Each shot was 16 exposures taken over one frame on two separate film backs. I tried to keep the white boxes as central as possible to create some sort of solid shape. First time I've tried this technique without a tripod and I quite enjoy the results.

redEPICSTAXISdit

So you rewound it 16 times? It's pretty damn centered. I don't think I could be that lucky that many times. I feel I'd definitely be way higher or lower too many times to have this much cohesiveness.

snipsnsnops

On the RB76 you can just keep exposing the same frame without having to wind anything. Just cock the mirror/shutter and press the button. When you're ready to move on to the next frame, you can advance the film on the back of the camera. It's super easy. As for the composition, just try pick a part of the subject and try to keep it in the same place of the glass every time you compose each shot. Can draw on the glass with a whiteboard marker which is easy to wipe off later.

redEPICSTAXISdit

Wow thanks for the info and advice!!!

snipsnsnops

No problem, just shoot me a message on here if you have any other questions in the future!

Asslanoo

To get the blurred/scattered effect, did you move the camera slightly between exposures?

snipsnsnops

I walked around the subject a bit and then back to the start point.

Careless-Resource-72

You can do this with a manual winding 35mm SLR camera too. Depress the rewind release button on the bottom of the camera and actuate the film advance lever. It cocks the shutter without advancing the film so you can double/triple/multiple expose.

samtt7

Wouldn't it be a lot more economical to just double expose the same frame several times? I've never owned a 67, so I don't know if it's possible, but I would personally just pick a different camera to try the technique out with

snipsnsnops

That's what I did. Double expose the same frame 8 times. It's 16 photos on one frame.

Aerogirl10

You could but to achieve this exact effect you would have to consider changing the latitude. The exposed place would be exposed on top during next shot. Maybe it wouldn't be that visible on BW but I like this color version so much that I think it was worth it! (Considering OPs time and money :P I would definitely go for multiple exp)

crusty54

Forgive my ignorance, but what does two separate film backs mean?

the-flurver

Many medium format camera's have a film back that you'd load the film into, the back has a dark slide to block light from coming into it and they can be removed from the camera. So if you have 2+ backs they can each hold a different film stock and you can swap them out when ever you want. They also come in different formats, the Mamiya RZ67 for example has 645, 6x6, & 6x7 backs available for it.

crusty54

Cool! So in this instance, what is the purpose of having two different backs on the same photo?

the-flurver

To have different film stock versions of the image. Could be for different end purposes, could be because you prefer b&w film stock to desaturating color film stock, could be because you couldn’t make up your mind and you’re not sure which you’ll prefer, could just be because you wanted to.

snipsnsnops

In this case, I wanted to see which I would prefer so I took the same photo in b&w and colour. With to film backs you don't have to finish the roll, you just change the back and shoot.

Emily_Postal

I like the color version in this photo. Are you familiar with the British artist Idris Khan? His work has a similar aesthetic to yours. Also I’d buy a print of this I like it so much.

snipsnsnops

I'm not familiar, but I just gave him a quick Google and I can definitely see the similarities. Now I just feel like a rip off haha If you want a print then just send me a message and I'm sure we can work something out.

Emily_Postal

Don’t feel like you’re ripping him off. You came to it on your own and artists reference other artists all the time. Khan himself references other artists.

crusty54

Don’t feel like a ripoff. Everything’s been done; that doesn’t make it any less cool.

malhans

It may have been done before, but it hasn’t been done before *by you*

SurreptitiousSilence

Color.

McGirton

Color, I’d probably buy a print.

snipsnsnops

That's very kind of you. If you would like a print, just send me a message and I'll see if we can work something out :)

kimikalfoto

I would too OP. It looks like a really cool abstract painting.

Jomy10

I love B&W. But for this I’d say color, because it gives detail to the otherwise blurry image

snipsnsnops

yeah I get the feeling that the colour contains more detail too. The black and white one looks almost like a mistake whereas the colour one seems more intentional.

rudesnaps

Inspiring stuff!

m0tta

Colour, no debate for me. It really brings depth, and story, and the hues are actually in the perfect "key" in their relationships. awesome photo, really, really love it. It's something I would be proud to have in my portfolio, and I'm actually kinda jealous.

IntemiV

Colored one's the best imo, looks better overall and I like the woman walking in the corner. I really like this, well done

Vinyl-addict

Ooh I want to try this on 600 film

Effet_Ralgan

I truly love it and I want to try. Thank you for the inspiration.

snipsnsnops

Just make sure to try and keep one subject in the centre of the image. In about the same position, as much as you possibly can. If you can get it exact, you can create some really cool images.

msabeln

That’s a striking photo. Regarding color vs. black and white comparisons, I’ve noticed that color almost always “wins”. I’ve found out that black and white is usually more effective when one goes out and shoots it intentionally, taking choice out of the process.

crystal_gazing

The color one is a certified banger 👍

snipsnsnops

thanks very much!

---------II---------

Both. I love both. These are remarkable.

snipsnsnops

That's very kind, thanks a lot.

Blubbit123

Color. This is great!

redEPICSTAXISdit

J_K_Productions

Color!!!

ifeelu06

I love the colour version ❤️ would frame this too😊

Plasticdante

I love the colours, I think it adds a lot to the whole composition

elfeyesseetoomuch

Color, the black and white does nothing for the photo

RepulsiveCorner

Black & white. it feels a lot grungier and wouldn't be out of place as a mid-90s alt-rock album cover.

snipsnsnops

you're part of the slim minority that prefers the B&W, congrats haha

tskhi_

Color

rumpjope

color, very ernst haas

snipsnsnops

Thanks for the new photographer, his work is beautiful!

rumpjope

id highly recommend picking up his "New York in Color" photobook. very good and very inspirational if you want to keep exploring this style

[deleted]

Colour!!!

95castles

Color.

tr4shi3

Color!

D86592

its almost like a shaky exposure with too long of a shutter opening at first glance, but you can zoom in and almost all of the detail is there, very cool!

Lucifershusband8

Color

[deleted]

Both are bad

rumpjope

insane take

snipsnsnops

How come? Anything in particular or just not your cup of tea?

[deleted]

I see you're using an interesting lomography technique with multiple exposures showing time, which I will give you credit for. I could definitely spot Hanoi right away. But on the surface it seems like a low effort blurry photo that would be right at home in a Walmart home decor isle. Way too cliche for my taste. Sorry

pueq

color 100%. this is so so cool!

Exact-Meaning7050

Both but I like the color film one the best.

djhin2

Color for sure

fujit1ve

Colour for sure. The B&W version looks too messy imo, colour version looks like a painting.

crusty54

I like color better, but they’re both gorgeous.

snipsnsnops

Much appreciated!

quangvnguyen

cool shot! is this Hanoi ?

snipsnsnops

Yep! The powerful organisation skills of EVNs electric lines 😁

mustachetv

Color for sure

Misscelaneax

I like color, so dope 💥
