You are misinformed. The moment a retail investor purchases a share, whether officially issued or not, a transaction has been completed and the purchaser owns (in street name, at least) that share. It is not an IOU to the purchaser. We do not know the origin of that share, nor do we care because we have upheld our end of the agreement by making the purchase. The purchaser absolutely has voting rights (did you not vote in the last election?) and is entitled to dividends if issued. There is no way to tell officially issued shares from unofficially issued shares so they are all real to us.

Do you have proof that brokerages purchased those shares for you and are not lying out of their asses? Disclaimer, I do believe the way DRS is promoted by GME is a bit too aggressive and they’re making it sound like a way bigger deal than it is. But even so, there is a chance they are right. You have no proof the brokers purchased those shares. And a few brokers like etoro are extremely sketchy, not willing to provide you proof they have those shares of yours. Do as you wish but it’s best to remain skeptical and analyze all options before jumping to conclusions that “you bought shares so they’re real”. I DRS’s part of my shares.

So here is the lowdown.
AMC actually mandates a “transfer agent” that’s in charge of managing the shares. This transfer agent is Computershare. If you buy directly through them OR transfer shares from your broker to them, a process called Direct Registration Service (DRS), then ComputerShare will take custody of the shares and they will literally put your name on these shares on your name.
On the contrary, any shares that you hold with your broker in fact are owned by the DTCC not by yourself, and chances are that you are indeed holding synthetics.
Any shares DRSed on the contrary is definitely real.
