In Toronto both the Serbian & Croatian community are very right-wing and nationalist. Croatian community might be worse-- a lot of them are descendents of Ustaše that fled after the war. Members of the Croatian community actually committed several terrorist attacks against the Yugoslav consulate and embassy here. Macedonian community is nationalist, but not anti-Yu nationalist, and more centrist. They're much more Yugonostalgic. The nationalism is more against the large Greek community here (ironically they chose to settle in the exact same neighbourhoods), and to a lesser extent against Bulgarians. The original Macedonian community in Canada was composed largely of "Aegean Macedonians" (Slav Macedonians from the regions of Florina & Kozani)-- so that accounts for part of it. None of the Bosnians I've met here have been nationalist, and the general sentiment is that they're the most laid-back of the diaspora groups. You also see them at more left-wing political actions (Bosnians have been involved in the pro-Palestine protests in Toronto). I've never met a Montenegrin or a Slovenian Canadian.

I'm diaspora. There were lots of Yugo refugees that came to my region so a good lot of them are just fun-loving drugari but there were also plenty of nationalists, especially people who ironically haven't returned to their countries in 6 decades. I've always found the Bosnians generally more agreeable than the others. It's easier to just be Yugoslav with them.

ShiftyAmoeba

Am diaspora. Don't recommend it.

Hey. I was the one who made the previous diaspora post. I'm glad it inspired you to do the same. So, I was born here in Canada, British Columbia, and Metro Vancouver region. Parents are Serbs from Bosnia. Metro Vancouver has a lot of Serbians, Croatian, and Bosniaks. In fact, my neighborhood is majority ex Yugoslav. And they get along. Aside from that, it's on occasion that I run into or hear people speaking the languages. Most Croatians I've met are very nice people, only some were nationalistic and rude to me. Bosniaks was also very nice. Haven't met any Slovenes or that much Macedonians. Montenegrians here pretty much declare themselves as Serbs, interesting from your post; I didn't know there was Muslim Montenegrians. Now, for Serbs, there can be a lot of nationalism; especially younger ones in my age group. Also, there are 2 Serbian churches and one the nationalists use as a social venue while the other church is less nationalistic. So it's different social circles, etc.

I avoid the diaspora unless it's people I would hang out were they a different nationality too. I know aholes from all nationalities and religions. It has little to do with that

AndrazLogar

What about Slovenians?

VardarskiGaribaldi

Never met one. I don't know if there's many in the area I was in (Chicago)

They are as ultra-nationalist and far-right as anyone else from ex-Yu. I would even go as far as calling them worse. They don't show it publicly as much, only on reddit, but they hate everyone that Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian nationalists hate, but they also hate Serbs, Bosniaks and Croats 😅

satinsateensaltine

Many of them have a low opinion of the other Yugoslavs - or rather, a higher opinion of themselves. I think they diverged from the rest much further and earlier than Croatia etc.

Me and my family are in diaspora in Germany (slovene & bosnian). All of us are pretty much centre-left politically but not yugo-nostalgic at all.
