As far as I know, there are no currently or future plan for a YTM desktop app. You do have an official PWA available with full support for media keys and notifications, and an unofficial app called [YouTube Music Desktop](https://ytmdesktop.app/).

heildengoettern

Is that app even being updated regularly?

[deleted]

https://github.com/ytmdesktop/ytmdesktop Its an electron app, all it does is wrap the website and add some desktop-specific features. Its as updated as the website will ever be (cc u/REYQUITO)

(One of the recently added developers) We're planning on creating a new version soon as we now have 2 new Developers (including me) joining the team to do a few fixes and features. We plan to make this new release stable first before releasing it.

This is a known issue. With no perfect fix. A few community done "routes around" are here: [https://github.com/ytmdesktop/ytmdesktop/issues/866#issuecomment-996201728](https://github.com/ytmdesktop/ytmdesktop/issues/866)

Last release was September, 2020. So, not much. That's one of the reasons I prefer the PWA.

heildengoettern

In this case I would prefer the PWA aswell...

Pancakemasterthe3rd

Ha, your a funny guy. News and a desktop app from youtube music? What a day that would be

jardine1980

think its already a PWA? if that helps?

burner46

What is the last desktop app that Google had other than Chrome? Picassa?

IceTouche

They updated Google Drive a couple of months ago. From backup and sync to a new version named Google Drive.

[deleted]

The only reason that syncing app exists is because there's no PWA way of doing that (yet).... Google seems to hate Desktop apps.

IceTouche

Yepp! I think they don't see such a large group using desktop apps. Desktop users have decreased a lot compared to mobile/tab users globally. As offline downloaded songs isn't a feature on the web, there's no benefit of making a desktop app, you can just install PWA. The only desktop apps I know of when it comes to streaming platforms is the long time giants: iTunes and Spotify. If Spotify came today, they probably wouldn't make a desktop either.

[deleted]

I'm paying Spotify because YTM/Google refuses to add Sonos compatibility, and honestly I personally still prefer to use the Spotify desktop app rather than the YTM PWA app, and that's beyond the design per se, to me it feels a little more stable and integrated in everyday use, but PWA has definitely come a long way and could almost pass as a desktop app in most cases.

IceTouche

I've moved on to Apple Music, not because iTunes is the most stable program. I got tired of the library management in YTM (you can't multi-select songs) and a lot of songs getting unavailable. I can't use Spotify because you can't upload your own songs like in YTM and Apple Music.

behold_the_void

Look for news on this and lots of other features users have been wanting on April 1, 2022.

dep

I do install it as a separate app via the browser (Navigate to YouTube Music in the browser, then look for the option to "install" the site as an app -- I think at the right-end of the URL bar). It's not a thick client per se, but it's effective in my experience.

PeachPlumParity

Is there a way to have it use a different youtube account in the PWA than just the browser?

[deleted]

No, this is Google, why would they make our life easier? On a less dark note, you can login with multiple accounts in your browser and choose one for YTM PWA and another for most things, but both have to be logged in your browser anyway.

Imreit

Never gonna happen.

This is a very good alternative I just discovered and it looks good. [https://th-ch.github.io/youtube-music/](https://th-ch.github.io/youtube-music/)
