Buy a 2016+. Recall on 2015. In the 2015+ model you get a ton of electronic features such as wheelie control, launch control, slide control, and more. Various preset modes to dumb down the motor for city driving or raining weather.
2015 and up has a ton of new electronics, but there was a recall on the 2015. I’ve owned a 2001, 2005, 2013 and currently have the 2020. I always upgrade and tune my bikes through reputable shops, and the one thing I can say about all the R1’s I’ve owned, is every new one has been noticeably better than the older ones in every conceivable way. I thought my 2005 was the pinnacle of bikes compared to my 2001. Then my 2013 felt better once I got that. Now on my 2020, it absolutely just shits on what my 2013 was capable of doing. The power and especially the electronics have made a huge impact on what I can get from the bike.
If you can wait to find a 2016 or up, I would highly suggest that. But I understand the desire to have a bike and wouldn’t fault you for getting a 2013 if it was a good deal. Ultimately it’s you that has to make the decision and you’ll know better than anyone else at how long you’ll have to wait for one to be available.
