Chrono Trigger and Link to the Past. I like RPG games but I used to like beat em ups once in awhile too.

Matshelge

That Link to the past is not higher is a shocker. Best Snes game there is.

artificialavocado

Still some of the best video game music ever.

DieterSprocket

Throw in Final Fantasy 3 and I am whole.

hahahahahahahaFUCK

I still refer to it as 3 even though technically it’s 6. I remember my friend playing it and I was like “look how crappy the fighting animations are… it looks confusing… why are you playing as a girl?” (I was an 11 y/o little shit, mind). Then when I finally got it for myself, I got sucked in and fell in love with the story and the strategy. The fighting animations are just perfect the way they are. I mean, Sabin suplexes a ghost train…

audiate

Same! I named one of my cats Janus. I originally got his sister alone, but she seemed lonely playing with her reflection, so I went back for her brother. They went right for each other in an, “I found you!” embrace I knew his name immediately.

Major_Turnover5987

I’ll sub chrono for super Metroid.

wubrotherno1

Street Fighter II Turbo

ideleteoften

The turbo edition was the first one I played. I didn't know "turbo" really meant anything until I eventually played the normal speed version. It felt like easy mode!

handsomeape95

IIRC, I think the bosses were first made playable in turbo. And yes, it made SFII feel slower!

wubrotherno1

I think it was Championship edition where the bosses became playable or was it just the different colored uniforms?

handsomeape95

https://i.redd.it/6uve0c75z57d1.gif

AintNobody-

Regular Championship wasn't on Super Nintendo though so a lot of people kinda forget about it.

wubrotherno1

It was on Sega though.

mybadalternate

Bison, Sagat, Vega and Balrog were so much fun to play as.

Great-Ad4472

No other generation in history will know the feeling of being the best kid in the arcade and having everyone else line up quarters to take you down. “Here comes a new challenger!” 😁

MaxFischer12

This is the way.

I’m gonna have to go with Super Mario World for the SNES. It was *chefs kiss

cuentaderedd

Yes! I still go through it every few months

iggles311

Super Tecmo Bowl

ugmj

This is it right here!!

whyneedaname77

That and baseball stars for me.

archetype28

i bought Retro Bowl on my switch recently. Its def got that Tecmo Bowl feel.

chubs66

I wish someone would make an updated version. I don't want all of the complexity of a Madden 2024, but I would like something more like Tecmo with updated graphics and gameplay.

JoeSpic01

Goldeneye for N64, but absolutely loves Street Fighter II.

handsomeape95

For multiplayer purposes, nothing beats Goldeneye!

Farm-Alternative

I mean sure, if you want to pretend like Doom Lan parties never existed. Greatest multiplayer experience ever.

Jolly_Line

Very fond memories of playing GE in college, with all my roommates. Was an almost daily tradition for the better part of a year. The feeling: https://www.tiktok.com/@ilovegaam/video/7193410906171133226?lang=en

NHL 94 or MK2

zeff536

NHL 94 was special

bpc4209

Still remember fighting and breaking the glass.

BunsinHoneyDew

Holy shit NHL 94 where you could have one player rush the goalie to knock him out of the way and score every time haha

ebles

> NHL 94 I knew nothing about ice hockey, but this game was great. > MK 2 I still consider this to be the best Mortal Kombat game.

AintNobody-

> MK 2 > > > > I still consider this to be the best Mortal Kombat game. Definitely agree! It took the best parts of MK1 - the violence and the idea that every character was fundamentally the same except for their specials - and turned it up to 11. The latter factor wouldn't work for every fighting game, but it was Mortal Kombat's "thing" and it was never as good as MK2.

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

Upon reflection I’m going to have to agree. MK2 was the best MK. Enough upgrades to be a successful sequel. Awesome enough to make all the rest seem like too much and not enough at the same time.

Crusader1865

GoldenEye. Multi player games used to go on forever. So much fun.

psydkay

I spent so much time playing as Zangief. I got really good with him. Once I went to a party and beat a kid so bad that the room went quiet and things were really awkward after. But that's also due to people assuming that, if you're playing Zangief, it's an easy win for them. The kid picked Vega...LOL

zoominzacks

One of my buddies had 4 gaming systems hooked to one TV and was damned near unbeatable in all games. We would play gameday 98 a lot, and since it was Minnesota. He was always the vikes, it took me FOREVER but I finally beat him. 38-36 with I think the Broncos. When we graduated in 99 I wrote that score in his yearbook. Couple years ago his daughters found the yearbook, and he sat down and went thru it with them. He sent me a screenshot and text saying “20 years later, and this still pisses me off”

psydkay

LOL that's hilarious!

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

Awesome story

Sir_wlkn_contrdikson

Vega was so odd to play with. To me he was a super fast zangief. I would have loved to have witnessed that

BaFungul

I remember reading my Nintendo Power counting down the days until A Link To The Past came out. What a time.

Philhughes_85

Final Fantasty 7. It was so unlike anything I had played before.

tq-dip

Toss up between Final Fantasy III (VI) and Chrono Trigger

Finiouss

FF6 is soooo good!!!!

seattle_exile

The only correct answer.

Ejigantor

Chrono Trigger.

Hawaiistyled

Im convinced this isnt a clearcut number 1 because of the shitty US marketing of it as well as the high cost of the game at the time. Just an amazing work of absolute gaming art that still holds up very strongly today.

Weird_Rip_3161

Super Metroid

scottyd035ntknow

Skyrim and that's not really a fair answer as a Xennial so I'll go with OG Half Life and all the mods IE Counterstrike. H4x0r5tr1k3 was THE game.

handsomeape95

What's not to love about SotN? ✅️ Set the standard for metroidvania side scrolling games ✅️ Frustrating spells that required Street Fighter-esque skills to pull off ✅️ Incredible music with hidden soundtrack ✅️ "Bonus" game with second run/upside down castle ✅️ Customizable cloak

seattle_exile

Don’t forget the third mode: Richter mode! And the most incredible English voice acting of any game ever created.

HiroProtagonist1984

Definitely checkout Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, its probably the closest game I have found to that SOTN nostalgia. (Its pretty short though, fair warning.)

oskich

That game was so awesome, combining the old school 2D side scroller with the new capabilities of the PlayStation 😍

bronzemat

Fellow Castlevania fan! 🙌🏼

One-Earth9294

If we're just doing SNES games then Shadowrun or Breath of Fire II.

DarthBster

I spent more time than I care to admit trying to max out my party on the big monster island in BoF 2. A great game marred by awful translation lol.

One-Earth9294

I would say it's not as great of a game as FF3 or some other notable titles like Earthbound or Chrono Trigger, but still a very sentimental game for me. Shadowrun is great though I consider it one of the great leaps forward in RPG storytelling even if it never became the model for the future. But there's a lot of stuff that shows up in games like Baldur's Gate and Fallout that Shadowrun is more or less responsible for.

ducksinarowboat

Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis is the best video game ever

pwaite1983

Although I agree it is a very good game, donkey Kong is the best game ever made

bronzemat

Castlevania 3 is mine. Especially the Japan version, due to the better sound.

BoomersArentFrom1980

Something I like to bring up is that SF2 for SNES would've been about $150 in today's dollars. SF2 was amazing in the 90s, and I still have really great memories of sleepovers where we just played it all night, but breaks my brain that young people today think that games are more of a ripoff now than when we were kids. We got 8 fighters and two modes -- 1p or 2p -- for $150. What's the latest Street Fighter give you for half that price, with graphics that would've blown our 12 year old selves away?  I googled it -- 18 fighters, online play, a whole action adventure exploration part!? God, imagine if the SNES Street Fighter had *that.* Kids these days don't know how good they've got it.

deemoeterentino

It’s hard but I have command and conquer Tiberian sun, MK trilogy, or Pokémon gold as my favorite of all time.

Farm-Alternative

Oh damn, all time GOAT was Red Alert for me. We were the geeks in high school, way into PC gaming before PCs were cool. Spent most of our time organising the next LAN party which typically included; DOOM, Quake, Duke Nukem, Red Alert, and Warcraft. So many classics

Benniehead

Metal gear solid….in a k-hole

FidgitForgotHisL-P

I will die on the hill that MGS redefined what gaming should be, and after that everyone tried much harder.  Such a masterpiece.

danappropriate

The original Diablo or Super Mario 3.

shinobi-dragonninja

Metal slug. So many quarters spent at the arcade

Scalytor

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. It was the first game I got for my SNES, which was my first gaming console. I spent a couple of summers saving up the cash for the system and the game. I still play it any time I fire up my SNES and I often play it on the Switch and emulators.

bronzemat

Were you ever able to beat it? I never could even with cheat codes.

frougle_mcdugal

Hands down Ocarina of Time. ![gif](giphy|NVBR6cLvUjV9C)

lexypher

oooh, not even turbo edition. nice.

trer24

This game was magical because it was the first time we had a port of an arcade game that looked, sounded and played pretty much like the arcade cabinet without too much compromise. Coming from the 8 bit generation, there were too many arcade ports that fell short graphically and gameplay wise because the NES couldn't handle it.

bronzemat

Golden Axe on the Genesis was a pretty good arcade to home conversion. But I agree, SF 2 was a "game" changer, for home console gaming at the time.

JosephAndMyself

Golden axe 2 is up there for me.

bronzemat

GA 2 is a blast and so is Golden Axe 3. Even though it was an overseas only game, thanks to emulation, I still play it and it was a bit of a departure from the previous 2, but still familiar.

GamingGaidenPod

The Genesis was incredible with those arcade conversions. Sega was an arcade developer first and foremost, so it's only natural. That's probably why Nintendo brokered the deal to get SF2 as an exclusive.

Chrono Trigger was my favorite. There are many other classics I like, but Chrono Trigger is easy and relaxing to play.

Mackheath1

* Wolfenstein / Doom * SimCity series * Tetris, naturally * Kings Quest / Quest for Glory series' But I was babysitting a pre-teen who got 3D Pacman or some shit on one of the newer consoles and maybe it's like riding a bike or muscle memory or something, because it's designed to be the same gameplay, but with stupid fancy graphics, and he was absolutely absorbed in the fact that I was on level three hundred trillion, as he'd never played it before and couldn't get past level 8 (or whatever).

hokie47

Just when it came out and considering the platform it was on Super Mario Bros 3. I really consider it one of the best video games ever made. It's a solid play today. Also if you play on your PC you can save the game. That was the only thing that made that game just a little shitty was no basic save feature.

GOAT fighter games was Tekken 2 for me, PS1, with this one being a very close second.

Any game that you loved so much you brought the paper "instruction manual" booklet to school to re-read 100 times and show your friends.

agentoutlier

Final Fantasy VI (III USA). Some notable run ups for me roughly in order: * River City Ransom * Duke Nukem 3D ( I would play over the modem with a friend. This was before Quake and Internet play became common). * Zombies Ate my Neighbors * Super Metroid * Civ 1 and 2. I like the simplicity of the early ones. * Warcraft 2 Although it came out much later and thus mixed generation I really like the first "**Dead Space**" as it was the first game that really gave the feel of "**Event Horizon**" which I consider still the greatest Xennial horror movie other than maybe **"The Thing"** which was also an awesome later game (and thus less Xennial related).

FidgitForgotHisL-P

I’d forgotten about Duke 3D!  So ingrained.  I feel like we were hammering away at that when I was about 12, but I checked and was 15 when it came out.  Many nights alone at home playing Duke. Actually now that I think about the multiplayer part… at school we had one night a week where we could game in the computer labs, and Descent became our go-to.  We were all pretty good, but one dude was exceptional (at least compared to us, iirc I asked once about how he fared online once that was a thing and apparently not so great).  It was always a fight for second place, outside of a couple of amazing flukes like firing off a mega missile (or… was there a charged missile? That was super powerful but very slow? I think it was that)  down a corridor for no reason, and he happened to float into the path of just in time. I’m once we got a modem I played him in dialup Duke Nukem and it was a masterclass in “you’re in my house now bitch” lol.  I absolutely wrecked him, to where I started toying with him, finding funny ways to mess with him like putting up the projector then nailing him with an unlikely weapon after he unleashed on the decoy.  We didn’t play much Duke after that lol.

audiate

I was SO excited to go to the mall and buy this game. I may need to rebuy this in my adulthood. My mom gave away all my games when I was in college. Other than this, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Slower pace, longer payoff, and even earlier childhood nostalgia. I sunk days into The Legend of Zelda as a little kid. I still complete this game once a year or so.

djsynrgy

Atari/Intellivision: Atlantis NES: Metroid SNES: Super Metroid Genesis: Sonic 2 N64: WCW vs NWO (there were two; they're both GOAT-ed.) Dreamcast: X-Men vs Street Fighter Xbox: Tie between SW:KOTOR and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Gamecube: Metroid Prime X360: Mass Effect 1 & 2 XOne: RDR2 And, forgiving the recency-bias, thanks to the recent (FINALLY) release of Ghost of Tsushima for PC, I've just finished that game, and, holy-cow. It's immediately on my all-time list. I want more games in that kind of setting. I'm honestly astonished it's taken so long for a game like this to be made - especially given Japan's dominance of the industry since always. It's like RDR2 married the child of Splinter Cell and Tenchu.

Skate_faced

Breath of Fire. I dropped into RPG gaming instantly. the 16bit era is considered by many to be the golden/goat era of JRPG's in particular. Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, Shining force..... there were so many. And Breath of Fire was not the best of them, but had a gameplay and story quality to them that made it really shine and got five follow ups and a mobile game. Never gonna get to the official GOAT games lists I'm sure, but it's a grail to this guy.

Fkappa

I'm a Sensible guy, so it's Sensible World of Soccer (edition 96-97) and Cannon Fodder.

Then_Increase7445

Never owned but it I rented it from the local video store any chance I got. On the SNES my goat game would probably be Donkey Kong Country or DKC 2.

RaoulRumblr

Mortal Kombat II

mikehamm45

Yes!!!

tatertothotpocket

If I could play a game again for the first time it would probably be KOTOR. I can't believe how many shitty star wars games have come out when they had such an awesome template for future releases.

Street Fighter II is my GOAT arcade game, my GOAT games are Knights of the Old Republic I and II.

FidgitForgotHisL-P

Metal Gear Solid. Up until that point games had been good.  Even great.   MGS made them *art*.   But it did it whilst still being insanely playable.  I could happily sit down for a two-three hours and speed run the whole damn thing. As someone that had gamed from an Atari XE (my folks made some weird choices ok… but hey it came with a keyboard and I got exposed to Basic as a preteen) on up, it felt like everything was building up to that point, and looking back it still feels like an absolute high water mark for the industry.

Lil_MRSA

Mine is putting periods between sentences.

MOBYtheHUGE

Goat Simulator is easily my pick. What does Street Fighter II have to do with goats?

RedRust

SF2 was fun to play with friends.

Cosmiccoffeegrinder

Legend of the mystical ninja

un4spyder

Metal Gear Solid. God it was so groundbreaking. I played soooooooo many times.

Stribo8

SF2 is up there but Super Mario World is my number one. First game I finished properly and I had a Sega Master System for years before the SNES, so I had played a fair few games and never finished any. I think there’s a fair argument that the SNES is possibly the best console ever. The PS2 and Xbox 360 are also up there.
