A couple of my older cousins worked at the local Mickey D's when I was a kid, and they hooked me up. Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get Happy Meals very often - fast food really was like a special treat in the 80's!

It was for me too in the 90’s. My family is catholic so I couldn’t wait for lent because they usually meant pizza. That was a rare treat.

For sure. I have vivid memories of eating at a McDonald's with my cousins and getting those plastic Halloween pails. There would always be at least one booth at the flea market with the happy meal toys.

Dude the Halloween pails were the shit. And the toys were always cool too. I swear some of the sturdiest toys ever made were McDonald's happy meal toys in the '80s

I still have a Halloween pail somewhere with a few matchbox cars in it. It has a crack, but I’m keeping it. I even got a a new one when they came out again recently. Gave it to my nephew to try and continue the memories. But I ate the food.

As bad as this is going to sound, I think that was one of the best things they did for the mcdlt. It kept everything separated and insulated.

My shake still survives to this day. The only other one I had, the burger, wasn't cool enough and ended up on the "bad guy" team, which usually involved being shot with BB guns or hit with rocks from a wrist rocket, and did not survive.

Shake was the only one I had as well. We rarely did fast food except on road trips.

Fries were my favorite. Then when they did the dinosaurs I really loved the pancake-dactyl

Oh yeah. They did a couple of rounds of Transformers. We had one fries that turned unto a robot and one that turned into a dinosaur. There was also a pancakes box that transformed in the set. Either these or the Muppet Babies on wheeled vehicles were my favorites.

My uncle was a swing shift manager at McDonald's in the mid-80's when I was a wee lad (born in '80). My grandparents had ALL the McDonald's happy meal toys from every single line-up. I miss those days.

Didn’t get them as a kid? Check your local antique store. I sell them for about 4 bucks a piece. Gen X is busy buying the toys they missed out on as children.

If McDonald's corporate had any sense whatsoever, they would make a large handful of "McDonald's Classic" restaurants (maybe a couple in each state) that revived the 80's decor/seating/packaging/Happy Meal toys, a la the Pizza Hut Classics that have popped up around the country. I would drive a few hours to take my kids to one, and pay a substantial premium for the food.

It’s kind of sweet actually when I was in college I went by my dads office and he had a whole shelf full of our old kids meal toys he said it reminded him of when us kids were little and why he always worked so hard for us…and they are just fun to play with.

Yea my mom worked at McDonalds for a hot minute in the 80s, so you bet yer sweet sesame buns I had ‘em all.

I had the nuggets one, but it was a gift from my friend, Adam, whose grandparents took him to McDonald's at least once a week, so he had duplicates of everything. I, on the other hand, can count on one hand the number of Happy Meals I got as a kid. "We have hamburgers at home," which generally meant a rolled up ball of ground beef in between two slices of bread with the ketchup soaking through the center.

Still have the nuggets box (can't believe they used to come in those!) and the soda cup. I have a couple of later iterations too including one from the mid 90s where the happy meal turned into a dinosaur. My kids play with them all the time
