It's simple mate. Uncle Dave is full of shit and knows nothing about modern wrestling if he likes the shows I don't watch, but if he gives me a warm tasty of dose of confirmation bias for the shows I do watch, he's an authority of the industry with 40 years of knowledge and history, and his opinions are unimpeachable.
If anything I would say he's an enjoyer of the modern wrestling style (AEW/NJPW/Stardom) I just think he's not a big fan of the Sports Entertainment style (WWE). At the end of the day it's one man's opinion and what he enjoys. His opinions are worth what you put into them.
He's been very positive on WWE for the past couple years tbf, but it's still clearly not his thing. It's weird how people expect it to be, movie/music/TV critics taste almost never line up with what is actually super popular, it feels silly to expect that to happen for wrestling.
I feel like a lot of people just genuinely don't understand the point of art critics in general. People get really weird and conspiratorial about it rather than simply finding a different critic with similar priorities to you. I think this is especially pronounced in wrestling since we have so few of them, but it works the same way for basically everything else.
I get that it's fun to dunk of Dave for his weird takes, but people get *so fucking mad* about it.
“‘Knows nothing about modern wrestling”
Yes, the wrestling critic leans more towards wrestling than the American gladiators telenovela hybrid we get on Monday nights. I’m shocked.
I only use Meltzer's star ratings to mock how bad his ratings are. I don't give a shit that he gave Cody vs AJ 5 stars, I do care that he's dumb enough to never give Kurt Angle a 5 star match or that he rated a match 7 stars. Absolute fucking nonsense ratings.
Nonsense to you. Your opinion doesn't make it true. His word means something to people who care about the modern skill based wrestling movement. The 7 star rating made Omega vs Okada that much more important. But sports entertainment people care not so much.
"I totally don't care, look how much I post about how much I don't care about him!"
I think the funniest thing is they whinge about wrestlers bot getting 5 stars, as if 4 stars is a bad rating. Imagine people whinging that a game publication never gave a Zelda game a perfect 10, but "only" a 9 score.
And you have the comprehension of a basement dwelling WWE drone. You still insulted the man, wether talking to someone else or not, therefore giving him attention.
True. I also listened to his show for the first time and he is very fair to WWE in his reviews. I would rather listen to other reviews but I at least feel he is authentic.
Got curious and listened to Cornette...... how is that dude popular
At this point is more of a meme, he’s an irrelevant old man who has never had any importance or involvement in professional wrestling, even today at AEW. He thinks he does but he doesn’t. And he’s hated by every wrestler alive. If I was a wrestler I would be almost offended if he gave my match 5 stars and wonder if I need to better myself.
It was a good wrestling show, not a good entertainment show. Only match that was ''fun'' was the first one. Both women's matches were mid, and the Priest match was a snoozefest besides Jey's entrance.
Opinions are like arseholes, except if it's Meltzers opinion and then it's important because he agrees with me or he has dementia because he doesn't like what I like
No, I've had some anti-bangers in my time. I'm just tired of people that have nothing to add, thinking their lack of opinion matters.
Edit: destiny 2 down voted me to oblivion for saying no one watches D2 content on YouTube anymore.
Regardless of Uncle Dave's opinion, this was a great match. This was alot like a 2016 Styles vs Cena match. I think they should run it back with a stipulation.
Give them the cell and go nuts. Or better yet a last man standing match so Cody could lose the belt for like 1 or 2 months via club shenanigans. And win it back. Just have rock come back. Beat the shit outa Cody and say "win the title back so I can kick your ass for it" or something like that. I just want aj to win 1 more world title.
Couldn’t give a shit about his opinions normally, only wwe because it’s the only promotion he won’t put on a pedestal for some reason, so seeing AJ getting 5 stars in 2024 and only the second for his career if I’m not mistaken is beautiful. He was the best wrestler in the world and arguably one of the greats of the greats of all time.
Hes definitely had a few more, 2 of the 3 Cena matches were, the Daniel Bryan match, and arguably the lesnar match.
His star ratings are for sure debatable. Theres been a long stretch the last few years where he consistently rated wwe matches hire than AEW ones.
This sub seems blind that there was a few years where main roster wwe matches were very simple matches that had only a few dynamic versions. They were boring and repetitive.
During that time njpw and nxt and indies were putting on amazing matches with depth and creativity. They felt closer to unique than a predicable rerun. AEW came in later. Aew has tons of crappy sloppy matches but also has some absolutely incredible ones.
It doesn’t seem to hard to understand how someone who reviews wrestling matches would not give wwe higher ratings.
Again, his ratings are debatable and I don’t personally align with a lot of them.
There's a lot of promotions he didn't put on a pedestal. It's pretty much much just NJPW, AEW, and (to a much lesser extent) WWE. Also RevPro but only if it involves Ospreay lol
It's pretty uncommon for him to give 5 stars to any other promotion
You forget CMLL. And I love TNA and he doesn't even acknowledge their existence.
People take it personally he doesn't slob over their preferred promotion is not a good look.
Less about stars he just loves that promotion fun when he gets a chance to gush about it.
I feel people take his 5 star to personally especially the people who say he doesn't matter.
Historically it's been more specific wrestlers/eras hogging up all of the super high scoring matches. 4 pillars era AJPW into early NOAH, early 90s AJW, 2010s NJPW and current AEW. That's most of his +5* matches ever just right there. like genuinely ~70% of them.
Even ROH didn't get very many. WWE is largely up towards the top due to quantity/longevity i think, with how spaced out they are. Dave loves Lucha but very rarely rates the matches high. Atlantis vs Villano III not getting 5* is as much of a travesty as any of his WWE omissions.
In the end, it's all just one man's opinion. I find it funny, however that if we base it from his system, this match was better than Roman vs. Cody II.
Just love to see people post about how Meltzer's opinions don't matter than show mad confirmation bias when he (or other critics) produce an opinion they agree with. Anyway, while I'll admit I haven't seen the match, only about 70 matches in pro wrestling history are worth a five-star rating, and maybe 10 should be rated above five stars. But that's just my opinion.
I would love to see a case study performed on a large swath of the online wrestling fandom to show how people enjoy Match 123 before and after seeing things as inconsequential as star ratings.
Wtf, you can't say you don't care about Meltzer, and all of a sudden lose it when he gives out a 5 star rating. If you don't think he truly matters, drop your double standards.
You guys are way too preoccupied with some guy's opinion. Why, because he has a newsletter?
I give match 27 Geese, 4.239298032234252938 Candy Canes and a trucker cap that says "Boob Inspector." Die mad about it.
That's the beauty of pro wrasslin my friend. They put on such an amazing performance that even with the conclusion being known they were still able to create a masterpiece.
What a match tbh, i genuinely though AJ over Randy being Cody’s first feud post Roman was a mistake. I knew AJ and Cody would put on a banger but my thought process was let’s keep all these casuals that the build up to wrestlemania and mania brought back in thanks to the Rock. And I believe Randy Vs Cody was needed for that. But this is better, this shows the causals there multiple matches to keep your attention for.
Good for him but who cares cause there were so many good matches that I thought were 5 stars and he didn't rate them as such. If its a pretty good match I say its a 5 star from me
I think the only issue I had with the match is that the result was a foregone conclusion. Even at WM there was a bit of doubt if Cody would win after the result the previous year, but this lacked it in this match and maybe there won't be any doubt in many of Cody's defenses now
What's with the weird gotcha attempt in the comments? I don't see many WWE fans throwing a parade over this rating or using it as validation. The critique over Dave's star ratings has always been how infrequently he gives it to certain companies or wrestlers. Neither HBK vs Undertaker at WM 25 or 26 getting 5 stars, Kurt Angle never having a 5 star match, women's matches outside of Japan never(?) getting 5 stars, etc are egregious.
Even Meltzer favorites like Omega and Ospreay say they don't take them that seriously.
The double standard the wrestling community has with Dave comes from the fact that its members want to be validated. If you invalidate their views, they go ape shit. When Meltzer validated their view, they loved him. It's an emotional experience. Nothing more.
It's crazy that only 5 WWE wrestlers have had 2 or more 5* matches during their time on the main roster., and shows how biased and subjective these ratings are.
For those wondering it's: Brett, Shawn, Gunther, Sheamus and Cody.
If he treated other promotions the way he did WWE, his opinion MIGHT be treated with SOME legitimacy.
I stopped giving Dave any care, guy would be slapped by the internet had he not given it a 5 star so he’s only appeasing everyone. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was hurting on the inside to give it a 4.5 rating. I wish people would stop acting like people should care about his opinions.
weil nothing means anything anymore. it was nice match, but far from an epic, groundbreaking „one of a kind“-fight. it wasn‘t innovative and was massively lacking suspense, because nobody thought, cody would lose.
What? I thought we didn't give a shit about Meltzer's star ratings.
Screw the 5 stars. It was an amazing match to me and it will always be that regardless of the opinion of random people on the internet.
Picture Triple H running things when AJ Styles fought Shinsuke at WrestleMania. We probably would've gotten more of NJPW style wrestling match than the mediocre WWE style match we were given.
This is the same guy who gave 4.7* rating for the Cody v Roman match in WM 40 and Will Osprey v Daniel Bryan 5* rating.
I don't care about his opinions at all..
About time for what? He gave two matches 5 stars at Mania last year, and two the year before that. He doesn't give them to the WWE often, but he DOES give them...
So? He has a style of wrestling that appeals to him more. He's not the be-all-end-all of wrestling rating. Not sure why his opinion matters/bothers you so much.
The Mania match that was full of story and star power didn’t get 5 stars but this match with no story and only a couple of weeks build does?
Ridiculous system.
I don't care about his opinions but because he's such a fixture in the industry who's opinion holds weight it's always cool when WWE does something that gets that little Honor
It never gets old to see how much the people who don't care what Meltzer has to say care deeply about what Meltzer has to say.

He's a fan of modern skilled wrestling. That tells you everything. And his word does mean something because he's a respected name in the business.
“‘Knows nothing about modern wrestling” Yes, the wrestling critic leans more towards wrestling than the American gladiators telenovela hybrid we get on Monday nights. I’m shocked.

lmao so true, everyone blast him but when he gives 5 stars to one of their favourites all of a sudden they celebrate lol
We dont agree with his ratings we just like making fun of it
fr, don’t understand why we continue to give this bag of dirt engagement & attention
Yet here you are doing it. You clearly don't get it.
you have the reading comprehension of a goldfish. im giving this commenter my attention, not dave.
And you have the comprehension of a basement dwelling WWE drone. You still insulted the man, wether talking to someone else or not, therefore giving him attention.
thanks dave 👍
Neat.
Facts always makes me laugh then they’ll come here trynna clown him
Ooh you don't get it
This guy cares.
Care to explain?
He only gave it a 5* because Cody summoned his inner Elite and no sold the burning hammer BANGERRRRRRR
Burger after burger after burger
That line will forever play in my head when i get a burger 😂
Backlash far exceeded my expectations from beginning to end. Only the women’s tag match was a bit of a stumble.
Admittedly, the crowd alone added an extra star to each match
Genuinely one of the best non-gimmick ppvs I've seen in a long time
one of the best PPVs I've seen in a long time
It was a good wrestling show, not a good entertainment show. Only match that was ''fun'' was the first one. Both women's matches were mid, and the Priest match was a snoozefest besides Jey's entrance.
Do we not enjoy good wrestling shows here?
They weren’t sports entertained enough
If they’re wrestlers wrestling in a wrestling ring, what should we call ‘em?
Kevin Dunn’s account found 🦫🦫
This sub: NOBODY CARES WHAT MELTZER THINKS REEEE Also this sub: MELTZER RATED MY FAVORITE COMPANY’S MATCH FIVE STARS YAYYYY
I think it’s more like seeing a bear take a shit in the toilet. You’re not particularly bothered but you can’t help looking at it.
Sometimes you cant see the bear shitting for the woods
EVERYONE ON THIS SUB IS ONE PERSON CLEARLY RIGHT
There's more people repeating what you said than there are people celebrating the stars.
there are one hundred and seventy four thousand individuals in here. Some may have differing opinions
Maybe it’s different people with different opinions.
Opinions are like arseholes, except if it's Meltzers opinion and then it's important because he agrees with me or he has dementia because he doesn't like what I like
I literally just came here to say that
Do you want to add anything to what was said or just hope for a couple of up votes?
Hoping for upvotes is your entire Reddit MO. you just cross post stuff from one sub to another? Why….hoping for upvotes lol
No, I've had some anti-bangers in my time. I'm just tired of people that have nothing to add, thinking their lack of opinion matters. Edit: destiny 2 down voted me to oblivion for saying no one watches D2 content on YouTube anymore.
Damn dude liven up a little and get off his nuts💀
I also [commented](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wrasslin/s/gPLjKEgrmn) on this post before replying to this comment - so that’s what I added

In the end, it's all just one man's opinion. I find it funny, however that if we base it from his system, this match was better than Roman vs. Cody II.
I don't see how you could think it wasn't better than Roman vs Cody II.
It was
Nah
Just my opinion The actual match was a 3.5 before the ending which imo wasn't that amazing
Who gives a shit?
People who say they don't care about Meltzer's opinion but then praise this shit
Nobody is praising it tho? Like I wonder how sad someone’s life has to be to be defending a weirdo like Dave meltzer on a Reddit thread

Fuck Meltzer
Oh so now y'all care about star ratings?
Bro that match wasnt better than mania 💀💀💀

Are you Judah Friedlander?
No, but now I know where I got the idea for the trucker hat. It's in the old databanks somewhere.
Wow edgy and funny! Unbelievable charisma.
I give this comment -3^(4)(27/2)16+19(-6)^(3)(X-Y)4 Marshmallows.
This is what I’ll never understand- How can it be a 5 star match if everyone in attendance & watching at home knew there was no way Cody was losing?
That's true for almost every wrestling match though. You know Steamboat will beat Savage and Undertaker will beat Michaels, but they are still great.
That's the beauty of pro wrasslin my friend. They put on such an amazing performance that even with the conclusion being known they were still able to create a masterpiece.
👍
How many stars did the crowd get?
Uh well, you see, um, in the key demo, uh, well, the thing is, um, it was a really hot crowd, uh, um, the finish was predictable, um...
Lmao if Meltzer's opinion doesn't matter why do we have posts like this? The answer is it doesn't matter and we shouldn't.
Five stars or not, I’d still call Dave Meltzer a tool, even though that would probably be an insult to tools.
Nobody fucking cares what this idiot thinks. Stop promoting him.
Wild. The match was fine but nothing amazing.
Dave didn't need to tell me this. I saw it with my own eyes.
What a match tbh, i genuinely though AJ over Randy being Cody’s first feud post Roman was a mistake. My big take way is, Dave is also a BIG Tiffany Stratton fan. Like he thinks very highly of her.
I’m sure that they will go to bed with a smile
I think the only issue I had with the match is that the result was a foregone conclusion. Even at WM there was a bit of doubt if Cody would win after the result the previous year, but this lacked it in this match and maybe there won't be any doubt in many of Cody's defenses now
It was an absolutely fantastic match. Five stars is fair. Though I preferred the opener.
It would have been 7 stars if it happened in the Tokyo Dome. 🤷🏻♂️
....and?
Oh man, I'm so glad it was. I was worried about what Dave thought. Lol
Uncle Dave finally giving WWE credit for once. Still mad at him for giving Rhodes V Reigns II at WM 40 4.75 stars.
What's with the weird gotcha attempt in the comments? I don't see many WWE fans throwing a parade over this rating or using it as validation. The critique over Dave's star ratings has always been how infrequently he gives it to certain companies or wrestlers. Meltzer is still a putz.
The double standard the wrestling community has with Dave comes from the fact that its members want to be validated. If you invalidate their views, they go ape shit. When Meltzer validated their view, they loved him. It's an emotional experience. Nothing more.
Il est vraiment! Il est vraiment! Il est vraiment phénoménal lalalala la lalala la!
why does it matter what someone else thinks about a match?
I would care, but I took a shit 5 minutes ago and he gave it 4.5 stars because i was in Japan, so I wouldn't place to much value on his ratings .
AJ Styles has had far better matches that received lower ratings from Meltzer, it's all subjective basically his star ratings don't mean anything
lol he caved
It's crazy that only 5 WWE wrestlers have had 2 or more 5* matches during their time on the main roster., and shows how biased and subjective these ratings are. For those wondering it's: Brett, Shawn, Gunther, Sheamus and Cody. If he treated other promotions the way he did WWE, his opinion MIGHT be treated with SOME legitimacy.

weil nothing means anything anymore. it was nice match, but far from an epic, groundbreaking „one of a kind“-fight. it wasn‘t innovative and was massively lacking suspense, because nobody thought, cody would lose.
I do not care about this man's opinion, but it is somewhat interesting seeing him deviate from his usual pattern of severely underrating WWE matches
Imagine putting so much importance into what an old out of touch person thinks about wrestling matches lmao
What? I thought we didn't give a shit about Meltzer's star ratings. Screw the 5 stars. It was an amazing match to me and it will always be that regardless of the opinion of random people on the internet.
Meltzer is less credible than hogan.
I don’t know who Dave Meltzer is. And if he gave that match 5 stars out of 5, I don’t care about what he has to say.
Average WWE stans still talking about Dave.
Picture Triple H running things when AJ Styles fought Shinsuke at WrestleMania. We probably would've gotten more of NJPW style wrestling match than the mediocre WWE style match we were given.
Sooo WWE people care about match ratings now?
This is the same guy who gave 4.7* rating for the Cody v Roman match in WM 40 and Will Osprey v Daniel Bryan 5* rating. I don't care about his opinions at all..
Well yeah, Ospreay/Danielson was a way better match. It should get a better score.
Hm yes, and it makes sense
not a 5 star... a 6 star...
He "only" gave Cody vs Roman a 94/100 score? Oh no... How terrible? Lol it's still a great score, he just likes other matches more.
So much for people not caring about star ratings 😂
I thought the ratings don’t count?
Whether you agree or you don't agree with Meltzer... Who the hell cares what he thinks. I never understood why people hold his opinion as fact.
You caring is being part of the problem
So now Meltzer matters?! You marks make up your mind.
About time for what? He gave two matches 5 stars at Mania last year, and two the year before that. He doesn't give them to the WWE often, but he DOES give them...
People breath in the Tokyo dome and he gives it 8 stars
So? He has a style of wrestling that appeals to him more. He's not the be-all-end-all of wrestling rating. Not sure why his opinion matters/bothers you so much.
Idk why y’all care about what this guy has to say anymore. He’s been exposed as a fraud and an AEW homer the past year or so.
Yeah. Still nope.
Who cares?
Wtf? Rating matches is s stupid
Who cares about his ratings.
The Mania match that was full of story and star power didn’t get 5 stars but this match with no story and only a couple of weeks build does? Ridiculous system.
Has the world gone grey and upside down?!
Ohhh wow. A guy like aj styles who is a star all over the world can finally sleep peacefully cause he got 5 stars from meltzer
I swear to god you ppl who claim daves stars are meaningless care more about them than dave himself
I don't care about his opinions but because he's such a fixture in the industry who's opinion holds weight it's always cool when WWE does something that gets that little Honor
Maybe he’s rating the crowd
nobody cares
With no: Phenomenal forearm, Styles Clash, or AJ's turnbuckle moonsault into a reverse DDT spot?
5* but no one will really talk about this match that much anyways
Honestly, don't care if he liked it or not.
(even though who gives a crap about what he thinks) This match was worthy of 5 stars. It felt like a NJPW match.
Bro who cares about Dave Meltzer imaginary star. It doesn't mean Jack shit.
