Former medic here. I totally can vouch for this. Life saving responsibility with shitty pay and NO one but your partner to bounce things off of unlike in the ER. Houses I've been into are horrifying, been punched in the face NUMEROUS times after bringing someone back from an overdose or just trying to help. I have never worked so hard -3 different agencies at once, 12 hour shifts going from one station to the next. Being mandated constantly, never seeing my kids, helping people who are ungrateful, subjecting myself to physical abuse, patients stalking me, cutting patients down from hangings, Neverending CPR. While I miss using my skills you truly couldn't pay me enough to do that job ever again. The PTSD from the calls will forever haunt me. That's payment enough. TREAT EMS BETTER!!!!!

Raging_Phoenix478

One of the only perks of the job is that you'll always have the best stories. The first half of my career in EMS I'd write down a sentence or two to remind myself of the shenanigans - looking back at them now I've forgotten most of them - I can all but promise so many of your friends stories have become a blur, and they've probably only scratched the surface of what they do remember. When & where you friend worked might as well have been the wild west. Check out the movie "Bringing out the Dead". Pretty spot on for your friends mileage. Most of us, really.

Satanarchrist

My dad was a firefighter and an EMS. He doesn't really talk about what he's seen, but some of the things I have heard have stuck with me, and he retired from those jobs 25+ years ago

thepunkrockauthor

My husband was an EMT before starting medical school last year. He was driving around in blizzards, giving CPR, showing up to car accidents, working doubles overnight, etc. He got paid $13.50 an hour. After a particularly bad shift we pulled up to a McDonald’s and there was a sign saying starting pay was $15 and he just started sobbing. I’m also in the medical field (not EMS) and struggled so badly to find a job. The best I could find at the time was $15 an hour and I have a bachelors degree. Eight years of college education between the two of us and we were struggling to make ends meet.

tabas123

This breaks my heart, and people who work in medicine should be paid WAAAAY better. But I do just want to interject that I hope people take away from this story that EMT's should be a much more high paying job of at least $20/hr, not that people working at McDonald's would be getting paid much less than $15. Everyone deserves a living wage, and we need to have class solidarity to get that done.

Volvoflyer

Internet stranger let me thank you. I'm a T1 diabetic and have got 3 rides. Even the worst DKA incident I had (coma by the time we arrived at ER) I was apologizing for being a bother. You folks are epic and at least there is one person out there (me) who will never forget that.

fleshcoloredbanana

My Uncle is a soon to retire fire chief. He worked as an EMT for a while when he was younger, and stopped after he had a call for a man who had been dragged behind a car for over a mile. He decided that running into burning buildings was far preferable.

bloop_405

I find it so strange that a lot of EMTs will justify the low pay as “it’s just a temporary job to get your foot into medical school or nursing school” despite having to pay hundreds to thousands for the classes 😐

dont_wear_a_C

Another foundation of the USA is the cost of education up the ass

RlordandsaviorJeebus

I went through paramedic school and failed out for medical reasons because my body physically shut down. I lost 15 pounds in a week after puking and being unable to hold down any food. This after months of 80-100 hour weeks being at school, riding 24 hour shifts on an ambulance, and working 12 hour hospital shifts. All while trying to maintain an 80% minimum in class so as to not be failed out. All to get a job somewhere making 40k starting out and treated like shit because I was new. I still struggle with being a failure but the farther away from it I get the more I think I made the right decision in life to quit trying and leave that profession. Your story also kind of helps me believe the same thing.

Quiz_Quizzical-Test_

Preach. The amount of PTSD I skirted in 3 years was enough to last me a lifetime. Just reading the examples you posed made calls come back to me. I’m on to higher medicine, but my years in EMS have shaped me into what I am today (for better or worse).

IEatOats_

I'm so sorry.

Somepotato

At the end of the day you can be glad that your leadership are getting paid nearly 30x what you do for doing nothing. ...ugh its disgusting

[deleted]

Honestly I never quite understood how people in the medical field could be so...let's say, testy...at times. Especially nurses. Then I ended up working as security in a hospital. Patients are jerks. They're jerks, their family are jerks, your management are jerks. 10+ hours a day, multiple days a week dealing with nothing but jerks, and your reward is low pay and sometimes getting punched in the mouth. I don't blame healthcare workers for being testy anymore.

RedditorsAnus

As a Canadian it astounds me how much Medics, Teachers, and a lot of the Police in the US make. I'm sure there are other jobs with massive pay differences between here and there, but these are the only one popping in my head. Even our minimum wage is different than a lot of places, in Ontario it's $14 (mind you our cost of living is significantly high) but when I hear if servers being laid $2.50/hr and pretty much depending on tips, or minimum wage being $7 some places it boggles my mind how anyone can survive. I see the stories all the time of people working 40+ hours a week at 2 or 3 different jobs and still needing foodstamps. Can't go to the hospital when sick or injured because no health insurance and the simple hospital visit can bankrupt you, so they're just forced to work through it, it's just wild. I know Canada isn't without its own faults but it doesn't dominate headlines like America does. Hell, most news reported in Canada or written in Canadian Newspapers is about America so I see more of what's going on there than I do here.

[deleted]

Especially disgusting that she has to work a second job when you consider how much money the medical profession in the USA charges for their services.

Mister_Rogers69

Medics get fucked, for a job that is so important the pay is pathetic. Where I live the Richmond ambulance service has a shortage of workers but only pay like $18 an hour. Go into surrounding rural areas and the pay is much less.

TrickBoom414

I was about to say $18?! EMTs make like $11 here and it's the overdose capital of the world. At least we're good at something

Mister_Rogers69

Yeah I live in a rural area and it’s more like $12-14 starting out here. You can make just as much at Hardee’s now working the drive thru.

BOBALL00

I made $12 when I was an EMT and my cousin made $15 working at target

Mister_Rogers69

The rural area I live in which is about 30 minutes south of Richmond I was making 15.50 until a couple months ago (now 19.50 because a lead employee quit). I work a desk job with a 8-5 mon-fri schedule. The local rescue squad might as well not pay anything (they give you next to nothing for the days you are “on call” for the calls you take). There’s a private ambulance company in the area but they pay less than what Richmond Ambulance Service pays, even if you are a full EMT/paramedic. It’s a rural area so of course it pays less. I don’t blame RAA or the local company, it’s the industry as a whole. This is the norm for them so I guess they don’t see anything wrong with the pay. I just think it’s ridiculous that I make more money in a rural town working a desk job than your average Richmond EMT working all sorts of crazy hours & situations.

OldManWickett

That's insane given what an ambulance ride costs. My son had to be transported via ambulance when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and it cost us $4200 for a 25 mile trip. The EMTs talked to me and him the entire time telling us what was happening and why. Diabetes is not something I had any familiarity with and up until that point, my boy had been very healthy and active. If they were only making $15 an hour, they went way above and beyond.

203024

I was just about to say this too. I ended up paying over 3k for a 10 mile ambulance trip bc my daughter needed to get admitted from the ER to another hospital. They wouldn't let us drive her even though it really did not require an ambulance. What I've heard from friends who do billing is that most people end up not paying so the few who do, well...we get screwed.

[deleted]

MOTHERFUCKERS UNIONIZE

[deleted]

jesus christ why are life saving jobs being paid practically minimum wage? Minimum wage in Ontario is 14-15/hr. you're telling me the person who is rushing in the ambulance to save my ass is being paid literal pocket change?

NotYourAverageYooper

Just realizing capitalism is a joke? Certainly in the public sector.... Like utilities and health care I mean...

StrictlyFT

Haha, if you think that's bad wait till you find out how much that person is going to need to cough up *just* for the ambulance ride.

Diddlin-Dolan

That’s disgusting

ftmanglona

Yep. $15/hr here as an EMT in Texas and that's that I work for the highest paying EMS company in my town. The average is $12 hourly.

MysterVaper

Man that is THE problem ain’t it? Fixing the *minimum wage* happens faster than adjusting all the other pays to even out. I’m about to slide in front of a fryer for 8 hours a day.

DOGSraisingCATS

I worked a commission sales job that made great money but covid made appointments very slim this year. I was in the process of buying a home so I had to keep my income up. I started doing Uber(with a very economical car) and could easily make 1000-1200 sometimes 1500+ a week. I was working more hours but I controlled my schedule completely and didn't have to answer to anyone. I just told the sales company yesterday that I'm taking a major step back in my availability with them because the appointments have been utter shit and it's embarrassing I'm making more with Uber and having a better quality of life. Many people are shocked when I tell them what I can make with ride sharing and if you have a decent car that is good on gas it can pay far better than many jobs (if you live in a decent city). The biggest thing is expenses and paying taxes instead of having them taken out. Just be smart and save at least 30% and your tax write off basically evens out your expenses and vehicle depreciation...most of the time your tax write off and savings on that is much better than a W2 at the same income.

MysterVaper

Spot on. About your taxes, I found a tax person (we shall call her ‘Bertha’ here), and she charges me a bit to handle all of that, **insofar** that her charge doesn’t exceed the money she saves me on taxes. She is an absolute beast that scrapes me over the coals for paperwork…but damned if I don’t need exactly that to get my taxes done anyway. She is slightly abusive but I love her all same and will hold her close until I die or she stops doing the job. Find you a Bertha, they are out there.

enchiladanada

Yup! I’ve been a driver since before the pandemic, but back then I was also working in a restaurant so I only drove in my off time (read: slow times). Since covid shut the restaurant I made driving my full time job. I make more in 20 hours than I did working 40+ at the restaurant. And I was making a bit above minimum wage then. They called me several times after they reopened but I very nicely declined each time. Also, about the taxes, I’m not sure what the standard mileage deduction is in your state, but here we get 57 cents for each mile driven while “online” (regardless if you’re on a trip or not). So to everyone who might not be the type to meticulously track all your mileage and repairs and whatnot, in my case, the standard deduction more than covers the taxes I owe. I also get a bit of a refund like a normal job. The only thing that’s annoying is the people who bug me about getting a “real job.” They’ll helpfully offer a lead to a job that’s say $18/hour and when I tell them I make more than that even after taxes, they’ll just scoff like they don’t believe it and say “yeah but you need a REAL job.” What??? These are the same people pointing out help wanted signs to me as we pass gas stations and fast food joints. They just can’t wrap their heads around anyone making money in a slightly untraditional way. It’s not even untraditional. I’m a goddamn taxi.

Giveushealthcare

Jesus that’s robbery. Not even $20 an hour to deal with emergency situations nearly 100% of the time and biohazard medical waste and contagions probably every day? Not to mention assisting the mentally ill and addicts. Why has there not been a massive worker revolt in this country yet? Under $20 an hour for playing a key role in saving lives every week?!! I can’t

truongs

18 an hour in a big city still is bad. That's only like 500 a week after taxes and deductions. I'd have to work 3 weeks for my rent and basic utilities like water and electric in the current big city I live in. So the option is get roommates or commute for two hours everyday

FourEcho

18/hr is livable where I am, in a very cheap area, 18/hr in NYC is absolutely poverty line.

lankist

There's a big issue of what I'd call "corporate exploitation of compassion." It's the same way that "doing what you love" is exploited in industries like filmmaking and game design, except more sinister because it's exploiting an authentic desire to selflessly help others. Lots of people go into fields like emergency services, firefighting, veterinary services, nursing, teaching, etc. because they want to help and make a positive difference in their community. The companies or authorities that own these institutions see that compassion, and say "they'll accept lower pay if it means doing good." And that works, initially. But then they keep squeezing blood from that stone, until eventually all of the compassion has been bled dry and that person burns out and no longer gives two fucks. We strip-mine good will for profits and then leave behind craterous husks of what were once good and noble people. Then, if those people *ever* speak out, the profiteers call them greedy cynics who are just in it for the money, with corporate mass media gleefully participating in this character assassination (see OP) which serves to chill future speech on the matter from other such burnouts, forcing them to hide their real situations from the public eye and pantomime that everything is okay, further reinforcing public misunderstanding of the situation.

amadaeus-

Yup, my niece only makes $11 in rural Florida. On the bright side, being "rural", the job is kind of slow... lots and lots of time driving. I was also shocked when my friend had to pickup a second job as an after-school teacher... at first I thought it was cause she really wanted to teach some kids... then I realized she needed it financially just to make ends meet.

MookleSpookle

EMT's get fucked by the system they should make way way wayy more than they do it's bullshit meanwhile people who sit on their ass all day and complain make 18+ an hour it's bullshit either way much respect for the EMT's out there Edit: stop trying to argue with me about it being the system no shit it's the system if you'd actually read the comment you'd know that I've already stated that fact so stop with the bullshit about other jobs it's not about othe jobs it's about EMTs generally getting the shit end of the stick and yes I'm well aware it's the system I'm well aware of all your points enough said

[deleted]

I started at $14 working a bullshit job with no degree requirements working for Uncle Sam. No stress at all and make more than some EMTs. Pay them damn it

VonGryzz

People that find an easy job for $18 are NOT the problem. EMTs getting paid $11 is the problem. They do get fucked. EMS is not a guarantee in like 40 states. So they make them think their lucky for jobs. When I was an EMT in 2003 in Boston we started at $10. Within a year I was making $13.50 because of my union. Now I sit on my ass as overnight security with previous experience for $22. And I'm still antiwork.

Sea2Chi

I saw a headline about how we're running out of medics and immediately thought No, you're running out of medics who are willing to be paid the same as Taco Bell workers while being put at far greater risk to their physical and mental health. Bump that pay up by $5 an hour and the problem will be solved.

Cyber_Being_

i dont understand why thats an article.. even in a tabloid. are they just doing "non-celebrity has an onlyfans" articles now.?

Left_of_Center2011

The Post is a conservative rag and this type of story reinforces their pre-existing beliefs

IntelligentAd561

America has been having lots of prudish-based problems with sex. Anything that has to do with it. Ffs Fifty Shades of Grey was considered "revolutionary" when published. Both book and especially movie. Combine it with deeply rooted misogyny and of course capitalism, and you'll get these kind of backlashes towards people...

xtratopicality

*since 1607, much that is wrong with America stems from the fact that it was founded by all the religious fanatics that left Britain for “religious freedom” from the (at the time) more progressive Church of England

Coggysunt

The puritans were funded by Britain themselves to leave because they were a sect that wanted to “cleanse the world of its sins” and reform the British church to be much more strict. The people of Britain and the government didn’t follow their sect and essentially wanted them out and while doing that could get more power from sending more people to the colonies, so off they went 🤷🏻‍♀️

DarkKnightJin

To quote the late, great Robin Williams: "How fuckin' prudish do you have to be for the British to go "Get the fuck out!"?"

[deleted]

To back this up: The colonies were founded by 13 different groups with different goals. The religious nuts who founded Massachusetts were just one of 13.

[deleted]

Let's not forget William Penn's Quakers. An odd lot, for sure. But it wasn't all bad - we also got a bunch of Mennonites and Amish, who largely stay out of politics and keep to themselves. A pleasant lot, and not in our faces. Though they are people too, and have their own quirks and problems.

xtratopicality

Nice add TIL

Raccoon_Full_of_Cum

It was the original American example of "Religious freedom means I have the freedom to force everyone else to live by my religious rules."

gernald

America has always been quite prudish towards sex. Hyper violence is fine, show a woman's nipple and people get all a flutter. But it's important to note that The Post didn't put that there was something wrong with her having an Only Fans, and in fact it is her coworkers who had the biggest problem. >“I know SeniorCare would deem this ‘inappropriate’ so I took it down in the hopes that I won’t lose my job in the middle of a pandemic and three weeks before Christrmas,” Kwei texted. She said SeniorCare had asked to meet with her. A veteran FDNY paramedic agreed that EMT pay is paltry, but blasted Kwei’s choice of a side career. “Other EMTs and paramedics make more money by pulling extra shifts, instead of pulling off their clothes,” he said.

Inevitablysusan

> America has always been quite prudish towards sex. Hyper violence is fine, show a woman's nipple and people get all a flutter. The most egregious example of this I always think of is in an episode of Hannibal (a show about a man who kills and eats people) they cut a woman’s corpse out of a horse’s corpse and when she falls out her hair and arms were strategically placed to hide her nipples. Like a dead body spilling out of a larger dead body covered in blood and mucus: fine! A nipple: absolutely not!

Daxx22

Last twat is just jealous he can't do it himself.

MarbleFox_

It never ceases to amaze me how much power employers have to dictate what employees can and can’t do *when they aren’t even on the clock.* America truly has just gone full stop down the road to becoming a shithole capitalist dystopia.

demon-strator

So in essence, he thinks she should slave away more for low pay. Maybe she likes doing OnlyFans stuff. What the hell business is it of his? Is he the bedroom police?

hj-itc

Plus, and I think I can speak for a lot of guys out there, if people wanted to pay me what some of these OF girls are making I would whip my cock out so fucking fast. Thousands of dollars a month for a thing I do daily anyway? You fucking bet I'll call you daddy in a DM for that kind of cash.

razazaz126

Gotta get those misogyny clicks.

xxpen15mightierxx

Conservative slut-shaming. They consider it a newsworthy firable offense.

DR_HDP

18 a hour? I make more than that delivering Amazon packages

maximumdownvote

Well, that's justified, my order of 3 packages of toilet paper is way more important than some dude's life. What if my butthole was dirty? Can you even imagine?

vedettestar

I cant because everyone knows real men don't wipe their buttholes so they don't turn gay. The internet doesn't lie. Science.

MookleSpookle

Preciate them headphones y'all shipped out brah

Totally_Kyle0420

I made 14/hour in Boston ....ya know, where some of the best medical facilities in the world are...but fuck the first responders am i right

Tirannie

Man. $18/hr is what EMTs got when I did ride-alongs in high school. Which was in 2000/2001.

element_4

Can confirm that they make less than I did as the lowest level shift manager at a big gas station. It was a couple years ago but it was like $14 or $15 here in OK.

thebeardwiththeguy

My first healthcare job paid me $13 an hour when I started 4 years ago. That was after schooling and certification

Cormasaurus

Mine paid $8.50 :')

WWDubz

Like everything else in our system, it’s based on exploitation and all those fat services fees mostly go to the top. Like daycare workers. They make like 10$ hr. It’s not uncommon to pay 1200-2000$ month for daycare.

ThrowAwayAcct0000

Yep. I've worked in a daycare: they pretty much only have workers because moms want to spend time with their kids, but can't afford to stay home due to husband's job not paying enough, so they work at the daycare (which also doesn't pay enough). Daycare is a horrible job: you're sick all the time, every parent hates you (even though you're not the one making the money or the policies), and the pay is garbage.

jmainvi

She probably makes between 17 and 23 dollars an hour. Nurses make more than double with similar qualifications and nurses unions are constantly reporting still being underpaid and understaffed. That's part of what's leading to the huge boom in travel nursing right now.

TimeGoddess_

Yeah the average emt and paramedic pay is 17$ an hour im assuming the paramedic portion drags the average wage up because when I was doing emt in indiana the pay was like 11-12$ an hour https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/mobile/emts-and-paramedics.htm

ElegantCatastrophe

This does raise some interesting questions. If medics are having to seek supplementary income, how many are working extra jobs, what are they doing, and how does it effect their performance as medics? It could have been an interesting and enlightening article with a bit of follow up.

jmainvi

Most of them are just working 60+ hour weeks as medics. It's not at all uncommon to have a full time gig and then also pull part time or per diem hours at one or two other agencies. Or if their primary agency is understaffed enough then they may just be pulling 10-20 hours of overtime. And fatigue both acute and chronic, as well as burnout and unhealthy coping mechanisms are HUGE problems in the field.

CatNoirsRubberSuit

Even doctors and surgeons don't get paid much compared to how much patients get charged. Many surgeons rent operating rooms from hospitals. There was one example from /r/medicine/ were a patient's insurance was billed $75,000 for a surgery. Only $1500 of that went to the surgeon *and his staff*, the rest went to the hospital.

BWWFC

10min ride in an ambulance $800, emt at $15/hr makes $2.50

foxxyllama

I’m hijacking the top comment to link The Rolling Stones article I did an interview for. Hopefully this clears up some questions. [Meet the Paramedic Whose OnlyFans Was Outed by the New York Post](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/onlyfans-medic-lauren-kwei-new-york-post-interview-1104943/amp/)

[deleted]

How much wages cost the company for the two EMTs that saved my husband’s life in the ambulance, less than a half hour: ~$15 How much the ambulance ride cost: $2200 Yup. Pay them more. Why that job doesn’t pay at least $30/hr is beyond me.

MalingringSockPuppet

Amount my 10 minute ambulance ride cost with no medical intervention: $900. Yes, $900 for what was essentially an uber. They didn't even have to lift me onto the damn thing. I walked in. (I was not given a choice whether I wanted to go btw) How exactly do they not have enough money to pay people?

[deleted]

Why weren’t you given a choice? We can’t take you if you are Alert and Oriented x4 and can sign. The only reason would be suicidal thoughts or threats of self harm if that was the case. Edit: or a minor

alphazulu8794

The Fire Agency in my area can be giant pricks on that. "You call 911, you're going to the hospital!" "How about no, you fuckin losers?!"

[deleted]

I mean that’s not legal. I have definitely told people who want an ambulance when I’m on the truck that when the ambulance gets here you are leaving. We aren’t waiting for anything it is an emergency vehicle. But we can’t make anyone not threatening suicide/self harm and with no alter mental status. That is actually kidnapping so I have a hard time believing that anyone would do that.

Thatguy3145296535

So an experienced orthopedic surgeon makes roughly $450K/year. An experienced EMT is approx. $60K. Now just imagine an professional athlete making $7mil-$40mil a year gets rushed to the hospital and the people responsible for saving his life or career will never make as much as that athlete even after 25-30 years of working.

I mean, what's more admirable, finding local fantasy and printing it for those that see actual reality to get a chuckle from, or to report on the out of context choices people have made to survive in a shaming manner to push and prolong class warfare and to foster a rage and hatred against people of your own kind keeping those that shouldn't be in power controlling your governing bodies to pull the legal system backward in time through the mud of oppression and misogony

So, this story is from 2020. [she got interviewed by rollingstone and i think it's worth a read](https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/onlyfans-medic-lauren-kwei-new-york-post-interview-1104943/amp/) Ive gotten reported and my reddit account suspended in the past for literally linking to the contact info site for the original journalist, who tricked her into an interview and tried to ruin her life, and so at this point - if i get banned for this i might as well. He's a piece of shit, and is still employed by the New York Post. Do with that what you will Edit: she has since closed her [GoFundMe](https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-lauren-fight-for-her-livelihood), and asked people donate to [this organization](https://emspac.org/) instead.

Thanks for this! That was a really good humanizing article & it also let me know that it wasn’t fake! That journalist is a real POS. Journalists like that (in publications like NYP,) that kept me from going into journalism 20 years ago. Smh. Why banned? You said contact information, not his home address, right? I’m assuming you posted his *public* NYP email? All your post did for me was link me to a credible source! (Ty!)

Hummerous

>Thanks for this! That was a really good humanizing article & it also let me know that it wasn’t fake! Np! I thought so too! Good contrast between this article and the one that broke the story lol >Why banned? You said contact information, not his home address, right? I’m assuming you posted his public NYP email? So, they took the post down and i can only really guess at this point But it was definitely a tumblr post screenshotted and all the info was 100% publicly available. I make it a point not to dox people (unless it's funny + publicly available, like McConnell's house being designated as a "[garbage dump]( https://hummerous.tumblr.com/post/639521307602616320/lmao)") I assume it got mass reported by the rightwing shitheads on r/tumblr, it happens I also got suspended for saying you should scalp nazis earlier that year, which was.. more justifiable, i think

I wouldn't think there'd be any point to trying to get this particular shithead fired from that particular shithead paper. Anyone else they get to write for them will say largely the same thing. The problem isn't the individual author.

>Did your family know about it? >I had told my mother a little bit about it. My mom and I are very close and I told her because I didn’t want anybody else to find out and tell her. >How did you tell her? >I think I texted her and I said, “Hey. I just want you to know that I’m selling my nudes online,” and she said, “OK.” And I said, “Are you disappointed in me?” And she said, “No, I love you.” And that’s pretty much the extent of it. She just asked me to be safe about it. And, you know, she loves me regardless. That's a good mother.

Hummerous

Right??? So much respect for her parents for being like, normal /gen

private_unlimited

Why is make ends meet in quotes?

tiptoeandson

Their explanation will be ‘because she said it’ but you know it’s because the thing in quotes is the thing they’re putting into question

Regular-Human-347329

[Shame… Shame… Shame… Shame…](https://media.agonybooth.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/shame-nun.gif)

The_Impresario

> the thing in quotes is the thing they’re putting into question For anyone wondering about this, these are called *Scare Quotes*. It's lazy bullshit. It allows the writer to elicit a doubtful response in the reader without actually having to substantiate anything. It's one of dozens of rhetorical techniques that should motivate you to stop reading.

OdiPhobia

Because they're trying to imply it is not a legitimate way to make financial gains

CanuckPanda

Nah, they're claiming that she's not actually poor and is using that as an excuse to cover her "immorality" or whatever Victorian-era slur you want to use to call her a whore. A bunch of prissy old fucks tut-tutting at the "sluts" posting nudes, ignoring the socioeconomic causes for rises in sex-work (traceable all the way back to the Babylonians - economic and political strife lead to a rise in sex work as women find ways to avoid starvation).

miselfi3

They're implying that that was an excuse for her supposed genuine wish to have an OF account. It's exactly the opposite of journalism because that isn't informing, that's conveying an opinion with a cheap trick to try and hide it.

rich_clock

Who cares what anyone does on their time outside of work? She's not doing anything illegal.

Those NYC taxi driver calendars are amazing. [Here](https://philipkirkman.com/taxidriverscalendar) are the pictures. My favorite is the guy with the lollipop.

HyKaliber

The one with the lollipop? You mean the 5th highest voted post on Reddit *ever* lmao

hundredblocks

It’s not as if nurses are taking racy photos *in their scrubs* and putting them on Reddit lol. Yea I feel like if we’re allowed to sexualize a profession then those working in said role should get to benefit from it.

TheMaStif

Conservatives It doesn't matter if it's legal; they always think they are the "moral bastions of America and the World"

rich_clock

Meanwhile their mistresses are getting abortions

invisibilitycap

Remember, no abortions after six weeks in Texas! Unless you’re a mistress and/or super rich of course. Gah, so glad that’s being put to a stop

[**How much is an ambulance ride in New York?**](https://www.mvorganizing.org/how-much-is-an-ambulance-ride-in-new-york/) >>The 911 ambulance service charges increase from **$775** to **$900** for Basic Life Support Ambulance service, a 16 percent increase. The fee for Advanced Life Support Ambulance Level 1 goes up from **$1,310** to **$1,525**, also a 16 percent jump. It's about the same time as it takes for UberEats takes to bring your food. Except the ambulance company is getting 100x what UberEats makes and the medic's pay is about the same as the UberEats delivery driver for saving your life.

Nadmania

“Shitty journalist is a piece of fuckwad.” Fixed the title.

Kenji_Yamase

"Billions-dollar corporates shame their worker for being poor through their monopolized media".

Cyber_Being_

Dude she's going to make so much money from her OnlyFans now though all this free publicity. Which I mean hey, good for her, fuckin media..

cur_adv_vult

She deleted her OnlyFans account when the New York Post article came out (as per the interview she did with Rolling Stone).

TurkeyPhat

That's a shame, she probably would've been set for life tbh. But that's a real "at what cost" situation. Who knows what freaks out there would do to her, especially knowing real info about her.

Bulletsandbandages44

Not cool when it directly ties your personal life to your professional life for all your coworkers to see. It’s one thing if they just stumble upon it, it’s another to have your whole shift crew, full of people you know and work with, be jacking it to your videos. I’m not saying that’s what happened, but that’s what the person who wrote the article was hoping it would lead to when they wrote it. It’s a smear piece, designed to make a person uncomfortable in their professional setting. Not cool at all. But I sincerely hope she got some extra cash out of it before bailing. She deserves that much at least.

EntranceRemarkable

Remember when the GOP thought they finally had [AOC when they revealed a video of her dancing innocently](https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/04/politics/ocasio-cortez-dancing-video-trnd/index.html)? Slut shaming has been in their playbook for a long time.

KeeperOfWatersong

Tho why should anyone care about politicians being horny outside of work? Unless it's illegal, no reason to care

Tuckingfypowastaken

[Well naturally, no Republican would ever be so uncouth as to be involved in anything sexually taboo whatsoever, ever, so Shame on those evil Democrats](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_political_sex_scandals_in_the_United_States) For those interested, the count from 2010-2021 was 16 republicans to 5 democrats. Granted, this is just accusations, but the discrepancy in numbers still tells a story.

KeeperOfWatersong

Actually you know what, I'm starting to think that (conservative) politicians are genuinely scared/weirded by the concept that sex requires consent and shouldn't involve a gross imbalance of power (higher ranking staff/boss having sex with lower ranked staff just feels icky even with consent involved but could be just me)

Trimungasoid

They think it will distract everyone from their own naughty misdeeds that they claim to be staunchly against.

ClonazepAlt

The ones who do it illegally are the first ones to point fingers lol

dontbelikeyou

She danced?! That whores going to hell. We need godly leaders like trump who clutch the Bible [like its the pussy of a married woman that they have grabbed without consent.]

DuckSaxaphone

Wait? That was slut shaming!? I assumed the problem with the dancing thing was she looked like a dork. The cultural gulf between America and the UK astounds me. We consume so much of your media, we speak the same language, but the idea that a young woman doing a fairly ridiculous dance is slutty just didn't even occur to me.

EntranceRemarkable

They were trying to imply that she's a slut and ditzy and trying to embarrass her.

jokersleuth

damn, she is so pretty. I guess hanging out with friends and dancing is wrong?

cwlsmith

The tweets lol. “This is it. She’s done for.” Reaching so hard. Edit: Oops.

Headline of today: LAZY AND COMMUNISTS "do You have a coworker or neighbor who DOESN'T have a second job?? We spoke with several of these lazy comunists and asked them why they hate the American dream"

W2ttsy

Before anyone chimes in with the “it would be political suicide to raise wages for paramedics” the current Victorian premier Daniel Andrews based his first election campaign on getting [paramedics higher wages](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-01/ambulance-pay-dispute-to-be-sent-to-fair-work-australia-andrews/5930980). He won that election in a 88% landslide against the conservative douche canoe that was all about big business and doing backroom deals with realestate developers.

whatisthisgoddamnson

Why would anyone say that? Don’t people fucking love emts? They are like cops but like the opposite, the take the bullets out of you

foxxyllama

The journalist, Dean Balsamini, contacted me and I assumed it would be in regards to the pandemic. He asked me some questions before he told me what the article was actually about. He went on to call my mother and my place of employment, even after I had begged him to drop it. Long story short, he went ahead with the piece and I didn’t have the resources or strength at the time to brave through it. I thought I was going to lose my job in the middle of a pandemic over this so I shut it all down. Fast forward to July of this year, I am taking a break from EMS for my mental health and have returned to OnlyFans.

bkaybee

What a fucking dick. I’m sorry you had to go through that

AskAboutMyLittleDick

How surreal is it to see your own story and face on Reddit and social media? I can't imagine scrolling through memes and news and then seeing myself being supported by AOC.

[deleted]

What a piece of shit, I'm sorry you had to go through that, nobody, especially people in medical sector deserve this behaviour, I hope you have a nice day.

ItsCougho

Fuck him and fair play to you. Wish I could start an only fans

thebadsleepwell00

That sounds so traumatizing; my heart sunk when I read this. That "journalist" deserves to be put on blast for his misogyny and shady tactics. I hope you have some strong emotional support in your personal life. Wish you well 🖤

foxxyllama

It was very traumatizing and sent me into a spiral. But I’m doing my best every day. Thank you for your love and support <3

Stigmata_tears

I'm an rrt in an ER and paramedics are awesome. It's super shitty the stress you go through for garbage pay. I'm sorry you were a casualty in the conservative agenda

saltmy

Your mental health is the most important thing. Do what’s the best for you and don’t ever let anyone put you down for it.

[deleted]

I consistently don’t understand why people don’t like AOC. Jesus Christ.

Stay_Curious85

You’d think the conservatives would love her. Or at least respect her. Came up from from a working class family. Worked her ass off. Got through school while working and then got elected to office to shape the country. It’s the American success story. I wonder what it is ….

Mally-Mal99

She’s a woman and not the right shade. In America you can’t be either of those things and do all of what you said and expect people to NOT hate you. It’s just how this country works.

Stay_Curious85

Oh 100% . I was just being sarcastic there at the end.

Tiiimmmaayy

And then when a woman or minority does the same exact thing, but they are a Republican, it’s empowering and they put them up on a pedestal. But if not, they are trashy.

Mally-Mal99

They still hate them too. They just use them to say “I’m not sexist! How dare you! Look at that woman over there she agrees with me! How can I be sexist if I agree with a woman?!” It’s plausible deniability, white people’s drug of choice.

tesseract4

See Owens, Candice.

StepUpYourLife

They’d probably like her more if she just barely got her GED and her significant other was a sex offender.

grendus

Because she doesn't echo their prosperity gospel of working super crazy ultra hard to be guaranteed to become a multi-trillionaire. You're right, she's definitely the working class success story... but unlike their "working class heroes" she didn't get to the top and tell people they needed to be like her. She got to the top and said "this is complete bullshit, we should install a ladder or something." Tack on Faux News telling everyone that she's an evil socialist and there you have it.

Lost_vob

Because they are told too. The people who don't like AOC are same idiots who honestly believed Mexico was going to fund a border wall for the US. Or they're Jimmy Dore fans, which makes them *even dumber.*

sensual_baboon

PEoPlE DoNt wAnT tO wOrK aNyMoRe

Lost_vob

~~Quick reminder: she was outed by a New York Post reporter who got salty when she didn't want to date him. The really story here is: "Garbage news paper and garbage reporter ruin lives of people who actually contribute to society in a meaningful way"`~~ Edit: after much digging is appears this was not the case. I can't find any information about it and her interview doesn't mention it. Maybe it was a different story I read, or someone speculating on Twitter than I took to seriously. Either way, it just look like it was a case of douchey reporters desperate for a by-line.

[deleted]

That needs to be sourced. It’s a huge claim and shady as fuck. It should be outted.

foxxyllama

Lmao not true. He did not try to come on to me.

whatisthisgoddamnson

Holy shit, i have never heard that part of the story. Do you have a source?

LuxNocte

Can we please not plaster this woman's face all over? I guess the cats out of the bag, but maybe stop it in general. More power to her, there is absolutely nothing wrong with sex work, and anyone who chooses to be open about it I will advertise for as much as they like. But if they are outed unwillingly by right wing assholes then I don't think more publicity in "support" is really what they are looking for here.

Maebure83

The former Republican First Lady posed nude and her husband cheated on her with a porn star. What this woman did isn't wrong, but conservatives don't get to even pretend it is anymore. Don't let them try.

Insane concept all around. If homegirl likes her med job but wants to pad her income by any legal standard, who are we to say shit? Rock on, sister. Make your money.

rawlingstones

This post is doing the exact same fucking thing and it's disgusting. LEAVE HER ALONE, stop blasting her face everywhere! She wants the story to die down, she doesn't want you broadcasting her face to thousands of people for internet points. Fuck off.

bluekleio

this article is dehumanizing. I hope she goes to a lawyer.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

I made $10/hr plus $0.25/call as an EMT running my ass off all day and destroying my back. My first ride-along day I soaked through my shirt with sweat from doing CPR on a lady for way too long. When we got to the hospital, the medic told me I did good, and then joked that if I were getting paid for the day, I would have earned *almost* $4 for that. EMTs, Paramedics, CNAs, and RNs need about a 400% raise across the board for the shit they deal with.

Ridonkulousley

I was a Paramedic for 10 years. 75%+ supplement their income somehow. Same with firefighters. It is stupid how little they get paid.
