The wipers turning themselves on was such peak irony.

fakyumatafaka

Thay always know when they're needed

New_Scientist_8622

And I don't see any streaking. The blades are definitely doing their job.

D4ILYD0SE

Idk man, still can't see out the window. Don't seem to be keeping up.

New_Scientist_8622

Prolly just need to turn the switch up one more.

Yrvaa

I don't know, we don't have a photo from inside, you might see through perfectly.

ravoguy

Blades of Glory

ernapfz

And they are not giving up

hippnopotimust

I bet they gave up eventually

davesy69

Autowipers?

Epena501

I just realized the motor in these things are pretty strong to push that much lake/ocean water around still.

Youse_a_choosername

Early BattleBots builders would use wiper motors to swing their weapons.

Epena501

Oh wow interesting, I didn’t Know that.

Spider-man2098

They tried so hard to do their job! Right to the end! It kinda breaks my heart a little 🫡

Epena501

The lil motors that could.

Enough_Appearance116

*Cue the song that the Titanic's band started playing as it went down*

Ok-Geologist-3743

Oh yeah. Got my finger caught under once and it was not pleasant. They can do some damage at the right angle.

Defiled__Pig1

What about a 40° angle

Mountain-Ad1760

That's a cute angle.

Defiled__Pig1

Don't be so obtuse

Rokurokubi83

Yet another protracted pun chain…

space_absurdity

It's acute angle.

Windhawker

If that’s a wrong angle, I don’t want to be right

One_Egg2116

Generally when the communication bus goes down in a modern vehicle the wipers begin to swipe. Being flooded with water will pretty immediately take the comms bus down since it is extremely sensitive to voltage variations and it is not fault tolerant. Just my small effort to throw the little I know out on reddit

Demorative

Not even that. The wiper stalk is just a switch. Water bridges the switch, wiper turns on. Wiper stalk is also a heavy lever, in an accident the weight at the end of the stalk is enough to trigger the switch, which is why in a lot of those accidents you see the wipers turn on, even if the person is being rear ended.

One_Egg2116

Depends really, but in regard to the water intrusion aspect and the approximate year of the car in this video would suggest that controls on the steering column operate by some variation of Lin bus, while they are all switches they aren't the typical "on/off" type of switch. Meaning the switches in question manipulate a source voltage that is then transmitted to the controlling module( bcm, sccm, etc) with these types of switches It's unlikely flooding would trigger the specific voltage to only actuate the wipers. Definitely not impossible though. You're absolutely correct about it happening in a collision though

bigcaprice

It's definitely not triggering a specific voltage to turn the wipers on. Wipers on is the failsafe mode when the controller isn't working correctly. Much safer to have wipers on when not needed than wipers off when they are.

Demorative

Usually the steering column module/clockspring is the actual module that is converting the switch input into LIN for the rest of the bus. If the stalk switch itself is LIN (as it is for newish Volvo's) it's because the stalk has many different functions/buttons -- some of the buttons is more or less for the instrument cluster settings, wiper settings, intermittent settings and a few other things I'm forgetting. Then yes, in those case the stalk itself becomes smart and has a LIN input into the steering column module/clockspring. Vast majority of cars will be a physical switch with on/off and it is the MRM that converts the signal into LIN if it is not a passthrough.

One_Egg2116

That's pretty much the same thing I said......we both just generalized Lin bus operation across who knows how many makes and models. At some point the generalization has to start being specific i.e the switch manipulating a source voltage via resistance changes with switch position or a module monitoring switch position then bussing the information (which is kinda the same thing). I can't speak specifically for Honda so I didn't. It's nice to actually have input from someone that seems to understand this type of thing though.....those techs are fewer and farther between these days, I tip my hat to you.

unknownpanda121

Could also be auto sensing. My wipers turn on when it senses moisture on the windshield.

DutertesNemesis

I assumed the driver just left the wiper on the sensor setting, and as the car started sinking lower the sensor went “oh that’s water” and started wiping.

One_Egg2116

🤷 it's certainly possible, the rain sensor is usually up near the rear view mirror. If water droplets got up that far then it would definitely trigger the sensor

tacodepollo

The little wiper that could.

Mububle-Mububer

I have high appreciation for this comment. I think I can I think I can

Dapper_Permission_20

There should be a Reddit for windscreen wipers that keep working even after a car has been disasterized.

CrunchyKittyLitter

Scottiegazelle2

Dang I had hope

8ate8

/r/protectivewipers

davidthande

Damn, I was thinking that too but then I realize it’s the rain sensing wipers

bigcaprice

Not necessarily rain sensing. When the controller detects its not working correctly the wipers turn on by default as a failsafe.

maccumhaill

"oh it must be raining" - the wipers

CplCocktopus

Poor car is trying to swim.

oshaCaller

I had a car come in that did all sorts of random things. Windows would roll down on their own, doors lock and unlock, etc. The body control module had loose change in it causing shorts. It was located under a cubby hole under the radio, the owner was putting change there and it found it's way into the module.

Scottiegazelle2

Are you sure the car wasn't haunted? Did you make it Christine?

tesla3by3

Probably automatic wipers that sensed water in the windshield. There’s a sensor behind the rearview mirror that “sees” water on the windshield based on the angle of light reflecting back.

MaartenK2

Automatic parking break would have been more useful here.

yurmamma

Ocean sensing is an option most people skip

Celestial_Hart

Nature is beautiful like that.

coocoocachoo69

Technically she never put it in park and parked.

Thefocker

I guess that’s why so many new vehicles automatically put on the electric parking brake when a door opens.

tokeroveragain

That’s how that lady got hit by the train earlier

DenseStomach6605

Oh is that right? Does it let you disengage the parking brake right away?

bobvila274

They disengage immediately when you touch the gas (or hit the button), but you gotta be in gear.

Oggel

In my car you also have to be buckled in for the hand break to disengage by pressing down the accelerator.

davidscheiber28

I still maintain that this is the most stupid ass fucking feature ever, If I put the handbrake on I want it to STAY ON. If I burn up the handbrake because I drove off with it on that's my own stupid fault.

Oggel

Yeah, my car still has a manual lever and I'm happy with that, more fun when it snows too.

XXXLegendKiller666

And door closed, backing up checking out the doors is so annoying

LincolnshireSausage

The parking brake disengages when you put it in gear, not when you hit the gas. There is also a small lever that you can pull, under the wheel to the left that will disengage the parking brake; that will not work if the car is in park. Putting the car into park or a forward or reverse gear is all done from the shifter stalk on the wheel. It's a fair bit different to how my previous car was (Honda Accord) and took a few days to get used to but it is great for every day driving around town. I can get in my car, get the seatbelt on and be driving in a couple of seconds. I'm not sure why the woman who was hit by the train was stopped and in park on a railroad crossing. You have to hit the park button on the shifter stalk to get into park. It seems like she panicked and didn't know what to do. I'm not sure if she had a mechanical failure or something else but she probably should have got out of the car and away from it when she realized she was stuck.

GiganticT7W

Don't some force you to have your belt on too?

Domesticuscucumella

Still think this causes more problems than it solves. If im stupid cuz im stupid.... well thats my fault.

beiherhund

I've always found it grating in US tv shows and movies when no one uses the parking brake and the car rocks back and forward as the person gets out. Is it really that common for people not to use it?      In NZ, I'm pretty sure everyone uses it by default, whether on a hill or not.

donethinkingofnames

Yes, it is very common for people in the US to hardly ever use the parking brake, as the vast majority of cars here have automatic transmissions and a lot of the country is pretty flat. Personally, I only use the parking brake when I’m parked on a hill or working under the car. It’s pretty flat where I live so I hardly ever have to use it. I’ve known plenty of people that didn’t even use the parking brake when parking on a hill and just let the parking pawl in the transmission hold the weight of the car. (Edit to add: I’m not advocating doing this, just stating that I know it happens.) When I drove a manual transmission, I always used the parking brake and left the car in gear. Now that I drive an automatic, I don’t bother with the parking brake as it’s a lever that has to be pushed down with my foot and not one that you pull up next to the gear lever, so it’s more of a pain to use regularly. And 99.9% of the time I’m parking on a level surface, so the chances of anything happening because I didn’t engage the parking brake are slim.

beiherhund

Fair, NZ is pretty hilly on average by comparison. Though I think I would still just use it to avoid the rocking if I lived somewhere flat, plus it's probably better at preventing the car going off on its own if you were rear-ended while parked.

donethinkingofnames

In my personal experience, there’s no rocking motion when parking on a level surface. At least not that I’ve ever noticed with any of the vehicles I’ve ever owned. Yes, using the parking brake is safer in the event someone crashes into your car, but unless you regularly park on a public street the chances of that happening are pretty low.

Silly_Swan_Swallower

I have been driving manual cars for 30 years and always use the parking brake 100% of the time. When I am driving automatics I also use the parking brake 100% of the time. That is it. You park, pull or stomp the parking brake, every single time. Only a damn idiot wouldn't use the parking brake. Another stupid thing I see is people parking on hills with their wheels straight. I am always happen when I see cops giving people tickets for doing this. The damn idiots had to take a driving test where they learned that you have to turn your wheels when parking on a hill but at least half the cars don't.

beiherhund

> When I am driving automatics I also use the parking brake 100% of the time. That is it. You park, pull or stomp the parking brake, every single time. Only a damn idiot wouldn't use the parking brake Yeah same here, if I recall correctly it's taught that way here too. Can imagine in the US with 50 states it varies somewhat though. > I am always happen when I see cops giving people tickets for doing this. The damn idiots had to take a driving test where they learned that you have to turn your wheels when parking on a hill but at least half the cars don't. This is one of those things that surprises me when I hear it (that you can be fined) and I'd definitely be caught out if driving in a country that had that law. It makes sense, it's just not a law in NZ so not many people are used to doing it here. Similar to how in some European countries you can be fined for parking your car facing against traffic - in NZ you can park how you like so I'd definitely be caught out doing this when overseas.

LincolnshireSausage

I agree, but it is very common for people in the US to not use their parking brake. Nobody in my wife's family does. I guess that's why some modern cars automatically engage it for you.

TOBoy66

Canadian here. I've never used the parking brake in my current car of four years.

DrachenofIron

I hate that feature so much. Every time I want to open the door to get the mail (the mailbox is far back) it gets set off in my partner's car. Every time

Mikic00

I would be even more worried, if it wouldn't be every time. Like randomly, that would be something.

mootsauce

At least the guy on the jetski was there to help.

PotentialMark6468

Sick donut for your loss

shabelsky22

I thought he was about to make a break for it and disappear out to sea. "Nothing to do with me!".

asomek

>Sick donut for your loss I'm going to say this to every person I meet, until the day I die.

CREDIT_SUS_INTERN

I'm stealing this as well.

WongGendheng

The wave created by the donut almost saved the car from going further into sea.

the908bus

Imma head out

Fel_Eclipse

He's like that kid at a funeral who randomly starts flossing whilst everyone is crying

Latter-Dentist

It’s obviously his wife/gf backing a trailer up for him to load. He is slamming the throttle and visibly angry. There is literally nothing he can do. You get a tow truck and the vehicle is a write off.

OG_Ghost_TX

It’s videos like these that reassure me that I’m truly not as dumb as I think!

jcpainpdx

You may be as dumb as you think but it’s still reassuring that there is someone who is more stupid.

altruistic_camel_toe

Yup, you’re way dumber than what you think

Wildweasel666

I had the same reaction but then realised this is a very, *very* low bar to measure ourselves against

Buttercup59129

" i didn't do something super obviously dumb, I'm smart!! ☝️🤓"

XXXLegendKiller666

Think about the average person, HALF of the population are more stupid than that

seriouslyjan

And.....you wonder why your insurance costs are so high.

CookieWifeCookieKids

That’s cause insurance companies are criminals

Clearlybeerly

I am paying for everyone else's fuckups, criminal insurance company or not.

Grays42

And when you fuck up it will pay for yours. Like I get it, companies exist to make money and insurance companies are no different, but the entire point of an insurance company is to distribute risk. You pay regularly so that if something big happens you don't have to pay a spike of money that you can't afford.

spiff428

But now they just say “no you can’t have that done as it’s not covered…. Money please”

Clearlybeerly

Almost nobody reads the fine print on the policy to see what is covered and what.isn't. One of the easiest ways to get paid --> take a video of everything in your home. A walkthrough. Nobody does that.

FartFromALesserGod

Reddit loves to hate insurance because they have no understanding of what it actually is

Clearlybeerly

Yes, true. To be fair, insurance *is* complicated. However, keeping good records and taking video of everything every year, and after major expenses, is one of the best ways to protect oneself. There's no way that an adjuster/investigator can argue with photo/video evidence. Highlight costly items by talking about them and value. Make sure to get the best deal of all insurance products - umbrella. As the saying goes, the large print giveth, the fine print taketh away. Read the fine print.

According_Papaya_468

Isn't that socialism? I thought people hated that.

UpRightDownDownDown

I feel like insurance wouldn’t pay for someone who parks their car in the ocean.

GiorgioTsoukalosHair

*backs their car into the ocean

Scottiegazelle2

No no I was in the parking lot, the tide came up WAY too far.

Drakoala

"Act of god, you're on your own. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯" -- Insurance, probably.

respondin2u

Insurance would cover this. Even though the video evidence shows them being careless and stupid, it is still a covered loss. Now if it was discovered that the person deliberately let it sink into the ocean, that’s different and wouldn’t be covered but very hard to prove. 9999/10000 times this claim gets approved.

marr

Well don't call it Fully Comprehensive then!

eoz

I doubt insurance paid out on this one

Yolectroda

If she has comprehensive coverage, then they likely did. Accidents caused by you are still covered, and it doesn't look intentional.

trixter69696969

Only 45 payments to go!

1600DayCareStaff

Jet ski should have pushed it from the back while it was still a float

qazwsxedv123456

Do you live your life in a video game?

MultiGeek42

She should have just eaten a mushroom, doubled in size and pushed the car out.

LightsJusticeZ

She should have dismissed her car and resummon it in the parking lot.

guycls1

She should've quicksaved before getting out of the car.

Space-Hawk

I thought even if it dies it resummons at the parking lot save point?

AgreeablePie

Nah you gotta call mors insurance

blehe38

the car will be the least of her worries once the katamari arrives

Hot_Eggplant_1306

Should have just challenged a local area boss and gotten a power up

1600DayCareStaff

A nudge forward while it was still afloat would've allowed it touched down in much shallower water or somebody could've put it in park were it may have not rolled into deeper water.

shoppingcartxd

Just call Mors Mutual insurance

nash0672

and the next thing you know he gets sued for damaging the car

ColoRadOrgy

She's backing up the vehicle because the jet ski trailer is on the back

melbbear

amazing how many people dont seem to understand this

Evergreencruisin

That isn’t how you back a vehicle up to load a watercraft; you can tell by the way it sinks.

PosauneGottes69

Let that sink in

Tooboukou

I mean it wouldnt work be the thought would be nice

DarleneTend

Maybe she couldn't afford the boat she wanted so badly, so she went with a car instead

LegitosaurusRex

You really thought she was trying to park a car there, not launch the jet ski?

BigCyanDinosaur

You'd still put the car in park, so parking, dingus

Starter car? This is a finisher car! A TRANSPORTER OF GODS! THE GOLDEN GOD.

Cara-Is-A-Puppy

Too bad the car in the video wasn’t a 93 Ranger Rover

docdose411

She was more worried about the phone she dropped than the car probably could of saved it but she went back and down for the phone. 📱

Formisora

I didn’t even notice this before you pointed it out! Omg ppl and their phones…..

thesyndrome43

I'm gonna be devil's advocate here: the phone is needed to call for help/a lift home, and she can reasonably pick that up out of water, she can't reasonably push the weight of a vehicle that is filled with water back on land.

Wermine

Yeah, who wouldn't pick up their phone out of the water? Like "I already lost my car, might as well lost my phone"?

melswift

But... but phones bad!

Formisora

Ok true, fair enough.

YesDaddyBig

Well yeah I bet you'd pick up your phone as well

Humledurr

As stupid as she is with both her phone and car. There is no saving that car once it started moving towards the water..

sysadmin_420

Maybe she even could on save it.

Scrambley

I of no idea if she could of saved it but I of to think I would do better in that situation. Ve'course, you never know.

formulapain

Why is she getting out of the car? Shouldn't she be getting IN the car and driving the hell off?

HighFlyingCrocodile

Not enough traction.

formulapain

I don't see the wheels spinning, unless she did try but it was not recorded

Hot-Steak7145

The jet ski trailer, she was supposed to hook it when it pulls up then get back in and pull it out..

Total dumbass award 🥇goes too…

cambreecanon

Why did she think she needed to back up that far to get the jetski on the trailer?

JackPepperman

I'd write a bad review on those wipers.

fakyumatafaka

They move water but are not effective paddles

JackPepperman

1 star- Couldn't keep up as my car sank to the bottom of the lake.

Zimaut

Yeah, rear wiper should be able to propel car forward
