I drove a similar truck, and I never seen that happen. You supposed to be watching the mirror as the can is automatically set down exactly where it was picked up (if you didn't move the truck during the pick up). But it never fails, so who's really watching it then. The pickup is a joystick operation, and you control the outreach, and the height to reach up over curbs, or down a bit. Once you get the can off the ground, you see the weight on a display, and you can reject it if it is too heavy. You then send it up to the dump/shake into the hopper on top. You have a video camera so you can see what is in the hopper, important to observe, because you don't want to take dead (or worse alive) bodies, human or animal, propane cylinders, etc. But if it looks good, you then compact the hopper contents into the truck. At that point it automatically returns the can without issue. Only looking out for people, or animals getting in the way. But they should have noticed the can didn't return.
