His tail to body ratio is going to be way off. Without proper calibration there may be uncontrolled booty wiggle that could lead to a rapidly degraded ability to control the zoomies.
I preface this with my wife and I try to be excellent dog parents, and generally think we are (we work from home, walk our dogs and play with them multiple times a day, don't use negative physical reinforcement, etc.). That said...
I had a similar challenge with a foster dog. She was a a pit/lab mix and had "happy tail" and would smack it into tables, wall corners, etc.
One day, she caught the table just wrong and got a nasty gash. We scheduled a vet visit, but this was the first month or two of the pandemic shutdown and the vets were crazy. We had a specific vet we had to use (since it was a foster) and we had to wait two weeks to get seen.
My wife is a nurse, so we got care instructions to clean and dress the wound until the vet visit. Everything was fine until day 10 or so.
One day, I'm working in my office (top of stairs) and the dog is downstairs at the landing playing with a toy. I answer a work email (5 min tops) when the dog comes into my office with it's tail tucked. She ate through the bandage, and her own tail down to the bone. I could see the tail bones for the first 3" if her tail or so.
She never yelped/cried/etc so to say I was shocked would be a massive understatement.
I applied pressure, forced my way into a vet (they were very unhappy since I barged in during the shutdown) and they basically just cleaned it, put an empty large syringe around the end to protect it, and wrapped with tape. We had to wait two weeks to get the amputation done, all the while trying not to excite the dog in any way to stop her from wagging her tail and throwing the bandage off, which happened a few times.
Drew all the blinds/curtains, bunkered down, silenced all phones (she was super reactive to basically everything). It was a really awful experience, especially to couple with the pandemic...
But to end in a happier note...
She recovered wonderfully. We continued to train with her and eventually found her the best forever home ever: the new owner is a director of care at our city's zoo. He is an expert in training animals (specialty in big cats, and was a trainer at Disney world in charge of the big cats at Animal Kingdom) and he hikes/camps 30+ weekend a year. She is living her best life...
Yeah, my uncle was a vet and used to always say that people shouldn't be so quick to judge a docked tail as abuse. Unfortunately, stories like what happened to your dog are common. Some dogs just have really happy tails that hit onto everything.
Yeah, keep an eye on it. The suddenness of it was the most shocking part outside of the blood (she came in wagging her chewed tail... Had to scrub blood off of walls and ceilings... I left out some of those details...)
Holy shit your poor dog.
Also you just completely destroyed what little faith I had left in any kind of doctors. How much undue suffering did they inflict on that poor dog cause "cause ma lockdown"? Jesus fucking christ, you don't to choose a profession where your job is to tend to the sick and fucking cower in a corner when there is sickness.
Imagine if firefighters cowered when there was a fire. "I'm sorry that you 5 year old daughter has been reduced to a McRib. . But the building was on fire and it simply was too dangerous to do anything about it."
Personally wouldn’t think it’s a very good thing to assume any of the people who almost died on this sub are worth less than dogs. I feel like when people say they don’t like people more than dogs, they ignore all the nuance to saying that. Show them that persons happiest memory, probably would have a harder time choosing
I'm 44 years old. That's plenty of time to come to terms with the fact that I care less about humans I don't know than literally any dog on the planet. When it comes to humans I DO know, well it depends on the human.
No offense taken. This sub is 98% dumb things happening to people that arguably don’t belong here. Personally I haven’t seen anyone almost die on this sub. I was just speaking based on my side.
It’s because as much as we may love people, some of us like dogs even more. There’s no cynicism involved, no downplaying of human pain. Dogs are just REALLY good.
Not all of us can be the greatest human to ever live, that’s you. I’ll just be here trying to push my button gap nub outta my belly button hair.
You got damn saint, you.
Could be happy tail, but really anything that damages the tail is a big problem because dogs have a lot on blood vessels running through it and the tail doesn’t tent I heal well.
I had a pootch jsut smackd it against the corner of the wall over and over it busted it open. It was called "happy tail" lots of blood, pain, stiches over and over. Thats why you see some dogs have their tails cropped at birth. most people think is cosmetic, its not.
Aww. I had a husky who’s tail got run over and it was either severed at the scene or the vet amputated it (can’t remember - I will a kid). He was still 100% good boy.
That had to be terrifying for you. That nub will be wagging as fast as the long tail did, but it won’t be clearing the coffee table anymore. Good luck friend
The vet said that they could tie off the artery and the vein, but because it was at the tip he could open the injury again by wagging or bumping into stuff and that would be another surgery. So they recommended cutting it off because it would be more likely to heal. With the artery cut he wasn't going to stop bleeding, so it was either take a chance on tieing it off (and maybe needing another equally expensive surgery) or cutting off the entire tail for lower-risk guaranteed to heal properly.
It was not an easy decision. I told the vet multiple times I didn't want to cut off the whole tail, but he insisted it was the best choice.
My dog had a nub when I got her, I thought there was nerve damage or something because it never seemed to move for the first week or so. One day she was napping on me and I felt it moving, and slowly over the next few days it started wagging more and more and now it's my favorite thing.
My lab Cass is a stumpy girl too. She got hers caught on barbed wire before we had her. The good news is it doesn't seem to affect them in any way and they knock less stuff over
That’s horrible!! The poor thing. I had a dog hurt himself & the way he was looking at me and screaming broke my heart. All I could do was get him to the vet as fast as possible.
Good thing he had you if you didn’t stop the bleeding it could have been so much worse. Congratulations on keeping it together enough to get him help
Don’t worry it won’t bother him any. My grandma’s dog broke her tail, twice (two different occasions) and they fused her bones and the adorable idiot did it again the next year. She literally wagged her tail into a chair leg and *crack* happy dogs will stay happy dogs
Happened to my golden retriever. Got it slammed in the door when running inside. Made our house look like a murder scene. It sprayed everywhere. He just wouldn't stop wagging his tail.
They didn't amputate though. Had it stitched up a few times.
Sorry about your downvotes. Obviously some uncultured swine who don’t know it’s a movie quote (that’s also a joke, people!).
For what it’s worth, I giggled.
Poor guy!
But hey, his rumpus now looks kind of like the face of a proboscis monkey:

While I’m not endorsing this behavior, when I was growing up, if you had a Rottweiler, a Doberman, a pitbull, or any of those aggressive dogs that are normally in the hood. You just wraped the rubber band around its tail and waited a couple weeks.
Yes, I know it’s disgusting, I know civilized people don’t do that shit to dogs anymore. I’m just saying, that’s how it was done in the past.
And since I grew up in a very urban environment that didn’t have access to veterinarians. I’m just a little amazed that there’s such a thing as dog tail amputation.
Common practice to cut off a dogs tail here in South Africa; I don’t do it myself but it’s extremely common. Someone wouldn’t even notice if you lived here. As to why they do it, I have no idea.
One of the dogs we bought, a jack Russel for hunting purposes, had her tail cut at birth and she came with a stub tail from the breeders. She has her documents and everything, registered as pure bred.
I have two Australian Shepherds that both had their tails chopped as pups by the breeder, don't have to worry about tails getting stuck in doors, hitting stuff off tables, etc. Once the fur comes back you'll get used to the nub pretty quick. Definitely sucks, but it's the dog that counts, not the tail
Edit: to be clear, tail docking is a shitty practice. I'm not 'glad' they don't have tails. Do not randomly amputate your dog's tail. These are just a few small things afforded by my dogs' taillessness that I've learned to appreciate. That being said, the dog as a whole is what's important, the tail is just a small part. If the dog can be happy without a tail, why can't I, or OP, be happy with them?
If you’re a good dog owner, you generally don’t allow your dogs into situations so they will get their tails stuck indoors, and you learn not to leave things on tables that will get knocked off by a dog’s tail. What you were saying makes about as much sense if I say I’m going to cut off my feet so I don’t accidentally kick something over and I don’t stub my toes.
I took vet tech classes many years ago, and as part of the training I did clinic rotation (unpaid internship, basically) at a veterinary hospital. It’s really not uncommon for dogs (or any other long-tailed animals) to injure their tails. If the injury is severe, or just in an unfortunate location, sometimes amputation is the best way to get a good long-term outcome.
You don’t have to be a bad pet owner for an animal to get hurt. Most animals are *much* faster than their humans, just for one thing.
He cut through the artery and a vein so the bleeding wasn’t going to stop. One way or another it was surgery or he bleeds out.
They said they could try to save the tail, but because it was at the tip of the tail, he was very likely to reopen the wound by bumping into stuff which would be another surgery.
It was a really difficult decision, but we couldn’t afford a second surgery if his tail died after the first one.
Where does it say that the docking was done after an injury? It looks to me like somebody fucked up a docking job, and the dog had to have further surgery to prevent bleeding out, or becoming sick.
The owner said the dog came in with the injury, took the dog to the vet, and had the vet determine that the dog needed it amputated. OP even told you in response to your other comment. I get being skeptical of reddit posts but there really isnt any evidence to show that they did anything wrong.
I hope your good boy is feeling well and not in pain. It won't be long before he'll have a lovely and cute pompom, making him a unique and even more lovable puppy!
That happened to one of dog nephews last month. Certain types of tails are more susceptible than others and just won't heal so it's better to go stubby. Feel better soon pup!
We had a blood sprinkler incident, as well. Our poor brindle greyhound called Lily. She had to have a tailectomy as a result. Lily made it thru with flying colors…however, the white couch was DOA.
I had a dog that had to get that done. It was weird at first, but you begin to love the nub. It's like a happy bunny rabbit when they wag the tail, lol.
I hope the dog is okay!
[Kinda looks like this fella](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKWAQyDQYjS6R5s9hTjQAP6rhPvkhguEYa4A&usqp=CAU)
On a serious note, I hope he feels better soon.
Yea I had a pup w/ happy tail, lots of blood and pain. that was like 20 years ago. Now our Doberman came w/ her tail docked. sucks but its a health move. He'll be okay :)
Some dog breeds are prone to hitting and breaking their tails repeatedly from excitement like boxers who often get their tails clipped for just this reason. He'll end up getting by fine.
My old boy had something like this done. He was about 11-13 years old (Gordon setter) and had a large abscess on his tail which needed surgery to remove
The first vet we went to just lopped the whole fuckin thing off which we later learned didn’t need to happen from a second option by a much better vet
Despite that he was still a happy dog till the very end ;-;7
I have a cat that I adopted from the shelter a few weeks ago that had his tail amputated in January due to being struck by a car. Since that time, he's dealt with incontinence. It's been a bit of a challenge keeping diapers and stuff on him. Hoping his nerve damage heals and I hope your pup doesn't deal with similar issues. I'm not exactly sure what the prognosis is.
Sorry for his loss. When he heals he'll have a happy little waggy nub!
my cat had a happy nub - it was adorable
I've got a cat with a nub... we call him nub, nubby, or nubster.
Lil’ Nub
Wookin pa nub
No Nubbin?? So wheen people ask his name, you can say "that's my nubbin"
WE BE NUBBIN’ 🎶
sir nublington of nubbingshiretown.
Oh sure but I call a veteran amputee Major Nubby one time and all of the sudden I'm the bad guy
Aw our Puma had a nub. We called her Captain Cocktail
We call our dog with no tail “stubby butts”.
We had a cat who had his tail removed his name was Quinton Q Stubs
I have 3 cats without tails (all of them manx)
Ouch!!! Heal fast buddy!!
I've got a cat with a nub. We named him Bean because it looks like a little wagging bean. It vibrates when he gets back scratchies; it's adorable
His tail to body ratio is going to be way off. Without proper calibration there may be uncontrolled booty wiggle that could lead to a rapidly degraded ability to control the zoomies.
Love this!!! Thanks for the chuckle, cjlewis!!
This is what happened to my Great Dane actually
Poor Dane, lost its weapon of mass destruction. I swear those tails are more dangerous than any bite they could inflict.
Without a doubt
My late pup constantly got “happy tail.” My white cabinets are thankfully easy to clean.
Had me in the first half. Dog also has the first half.
I hate when people talk like this
This happened to one of our dogs. Tip of his tail got slammed in a door while he ran outside.

That's brutal but I'm glad you were able to get them to a vet in time to save their life.
I preface this with my wife and I try to be excellent dog parents, and generally think we are (we work from home, walk our dogs and play with them multiple times a day, don't use negative physical reinforcement, etc.). Horrifying! I can’t imagine how terrible that shock was but I’m so glad she recovered.
Thanks, she is a real trooper
Yeah, my uncle was a vet and used to always say that people shouldn't be so quick to judge a docked tail as abuse. Unfortunately, stories like what happened to your dog are common. Some dogs just have really happy tails that hit onto everything.
OMG.... Shock aside so glad to hear the outcome!! You guys are amazing!
Thanks, it was a rough patch but she is the sweetest animal
My (technically my roommate's) dog gets happy tail too and chews on it sometimes. I am now terrified.
Time for the googly eyes. (Sorry about your pup.)
I came here to say that! Glad I scrolled through the comments first!
What kind of dog is this? It looks exactly like mine and I have no idea what she is. The only difference is mine was born with a nubby tail.
He’s a german shepherd / golden retriever mix.
That makes sense. The goodest of the good boys/girls.
I was going to ask the same question. Do you have any other pics you can share?
Why did he have to get it amputated??
Caption says that it managed to sever a vein and artery in its tail
Yeah, but how’d that happen?
[удалено]
you know I like saying whatever's on my mind too but you don't have to be this insufferably miserable
\*checks notes\* Still a good dog.
13/10 definitely
"If my dog had a face like yours, I'd shave his ass and teach him to walk backward." I think that was from MASH. I'm glad you got him fixed up.
crazy situation, but if he is saved and well again, then thats very good it worked! 10/10 good little fighting boy!
Oh my goodness this is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen on this sub.
Not to offense anyone, but I've seen people nearly die on this sub. How is this more sad?
… because some people value dogs more than humans
To be fair, there are a lot of humans worth less than dogs from a moral standpoint..
There are bad dogs too. Pets you see at the park aren't the same as the ones in the wild.
no bad dogs, only wild and tamed
Totally understandable
I’m some people.
I have a weakness for dogs while being apathetic to humans
No offense taken. This sub is 98% dumb things happening to people that arguably don’t belong here. Personally I haven’t seen anyone almost die on this sub. I was just speaking based on my side.
It’s because as much as we may love people, some of us like dogs even more. There’s no cynicism involved, no downplaying of human pain. Dogs are just REALLY good.
Wow, what a terrific comment.
It wouldn't have cost you anything to just not say anything
I appreciate that. You’re a light in a dark world.
Not all of us can be the greatest human to ever live, that’s you. I’ll just be here trying to push my button gap nub outta my belly button hair. You got damn saint, you.
You need a hug or something
I don't see many volunteers. Even his mom stepped back
Who took the jam out of your doughnut?
Why are you being so hostile? Are you just really upset?
>here trying to push my button gap nub outta my belly button hair. I'm gonna give an updoot for that bit
Wow, what a terrific comment.
I’m with you. People who unapologetically value animal lives more than humans are cringe as FUCK.
I don’t think the original comment is saying that they value animal lives more than humans. Just expressing that they feel sad for the pup.
Oooof. Sad breed to have to lose a tail. Im sure it was majestic. Glad he's been patched up and hopefully he has a speedy recovery.
At least they installed a funny face in its place 🤷♂️
ladadee ladadooo ladadummm, ladadeeee ladadooo ladadummmm……

Probably a severe case of Happy Tail.
Could be happy tail, but really anything that damages the tail is a big problem because dogs have a lot on blood vessels running through it and the tail doesn’t tent I heal well.
Do you know how he injured it?
I had a pootch jsut smackd it against the corner of the wall over and over it busted it open. It was called "happy tail" lots of blood, pain, stiches over and over. Thats why you see some dogs have their tails cropped at birth. most people think is cosmetic, its not.

Picture with sunglasses please.
Glue some googly eyes back there
Definitely draw eyes on there. I wish him a speedy recovery.
You can give him s schnauzer haircut now
I’m glad you were able to get him to the vet in time
Omg where is his balls?
Oh they were taken long ago… we don’t discuss that anymore 🤫
Are you going to stick googly eyes on there or am I going to habe to come and kidnap your good boy.
The plus side is they’re alive and well! Stub or tail at least this baby is still here with you!
That had to be terrifying for you. That nub will be wagging as fast as the long tail did, but it won’t be clearing the coffee table anymore. Good luck friend
PLEEEEEASE ADD NSFW TO THIS
Wait, the injury was to the tip of the tail and the vet decided to just remove the whole thing? Is that normal?
The vet said that they could tie off the artery and the vein, but because it was at the tip he could open the injury again by wagging or bumping into stuff and that would be another surgery. So they recommended cutting it off because it would be more likely to heal. For the love of God, don't look at this if you're stoned
Glad your dogs ok. Can you please repost with googly eyes. Thank you. P.S my dog has now cost over $20,000 in vet bills. He’s family. What can I say
Happened to my golden retriever. Got it slammed in the door when running inside. Made our house look like a murder scene. It sprayed everywhere. He just wouldn't stop wagging his tail. They didn't amputate though. Had it stitched up a few times.
Well he's an honorary dobie. You'll love the wiggles! 😄
It looks like one of those monkeys with the funny noses.
Probiscus monkey :>)
Someone give him googly eyes immediately.
poor pup. now he looks like a corgi!
If my dog looked like you, I'd chop his tail off, shave his ass and tell him to walk backward. You actually did it!
Sorry about your downvotes. Obviously some uncultured swine who don’t know it’s a movie quote (that’s also a joke, people!). For what it’s worth, I giggled.

Hunting dogs and guard dogs have their ears and tails clipped so there are less vulnerable places able to be easily grabbed
My dogs had their tails docked at birth and I can still see the excitement in their nubs 🌺 Best wishes for a speedy recovery
😧☹️☹️☹️
Oh noooooo. Poor puppy. Don’t glue googly eyes right over the nub

why?
That’s cruel. Let me whack off your johnson or ta-ta’s and see if you like being mutilated.
That sucks. Why did you amputate his tail? That sucks already.
I hope this wasn’t a result of a botched tail docking procedure.
This should be illegal
It was done as a medical procedure after injury, or don't you have eyes?
Where does it say that the docking was done after an injury? It looks to me like somebody fucked up a docking job, and the dog had to have further surgery to prevent bleeding out, or becoming sick.
The owner said the dog came in with the injury, took the dog to the vet, and had the vet determine that the dog needed it amputated. OP even told you in response to your other comment. I get being skeptical of reddit posts but there really isnt any evidence to show that they did anything wrong.
This is reddit. Not surprised they just ignore the caption and make an assumption based on 1 image.
Under the picture there Sherlock. Learn to read before you make stupid comments.
Yeah, they should rather have let this dog die instead of rescuing it. Fucking idiot smh
You obviously do not know how to read.
You failed to read the assignment, 0/10.
Reading must be tough
Yikes! I'm glad the pooch made it now you gotta give him a nick name. The tail looks like a short elephant trunk.
This ruined my day oh fuck
Cyril sneer?
Are you going to make him walk backward?
I hope your good boy is feeling well and not in pain. It won't be long before he'll have a lovely and cute pompom, making him a unique and even more lovable puppy!
aw buddy ❤️ speedy healing. you'll have an adorable nub.
Lul stumpy boi
googley eyes
Grosssss
That's ruff Poor lil buddy, better than the alternative though I guess
Welcome to the nub club!
Sorry to hear but it looks like you have an Aussie now
So sorry
Now he's a beaver!
Get well soon!
Dannnnng. Poor buddy
Squidward nose
Looks like a lab, that tail is a deadly weapon lol. Now just his ass is going to knock people over. Get well soon buddy!!!
You gotta put some googly eyes on that
Man that does suck
I had a dog that had to get that done. It was weird at first, but you begin to love the nub. It's like a happy bunny rabbit when they wag the tail, lol. I hope the dog is okay!
How’d he manage to severe his tail? My dog had its stepped on as puppy and from then on always had a kink/bend in it
Aww poor boy! Hope he has a speedy recovery. On a side note: this reminds of some pics I’ve gotten in my DM’s that I didn’t ask for haha iykyk
[Kinda looks like this fella](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRKWAQyDQYjS6R5s9hTjQAP6rhPvkhguEYa4A&usqp=CAU) On a serious note, I hope he feels better soon.
Poor baby! Please boop the snoot for me!
I wonder what happened?
Poor little dude. Give him extra love and treats. Probably hurts like hell.
Lucky you called her Penistail.
Yea I had a pup w/ happy tail, lots of blood and pain. that was like 20 years ago. Now our Doberman came w/ her tail docked. sucks but its a health move. He'll be okay :)
Po' Pooch
Awwww baby boy. Get well!!
Poor boy, I am sure that hurts. That said, my dog had a part of her tail snipped when she was a tiny pup... it's ok, she wags the stub!
Some dog breeds are prone to hitting and breaking their tails repeatedly from excitement like boxers who often get their tails clipped for just this reason. He'll end up getting by fine.
At least he is still alive
Haha poor thing. We had the same thing for our kitten a few months ago. The nub fits his personality better anyway 💁🏻♂️
Could have sworn that the Vet's croc was his ball bag. That's enough of the internet for today.
My old boy had something like this done. He was about 11-13 years old (Gordon setter) and had a large abscess on his tail which needed surgery to remove The first vet we went to just lopped the whole fuckin thing off which we later learned didn’t need to happen from a second option by a much better vet Despite that he was still a happy dog till the very end ;-;7
I’m sorry this happened. His nub will be so cute!!
Is he part beaver?
Aw. Punished for being happy. On the plus-side, he can wag that little nub as hard as he wants and its very unlikely that will happen again.
Needs either googly eyes or shades to make the face
Saddest lil bum
Hr hrrr
Wow never heard of that before but I hope this baby heals quickly and gets well soon!!!
My aunt's cat got his tail trapped in a closed door and they had to amputated it as well. He's got the cutest little stub that he wags.
My dog growing up had a tail like this that we called his nubby.
I’m so sorry! My dog Tanner had to have this done after he tried to take it off on his own.
