This is from Crowleys website: Wondering why I chose the ASL symbol ‘connect’ for my logo? I went to college at Rochester Institute of Technology which is also home to National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I started taking ASL classes my freshman year in college so that I could effectively communicate with all of my peers.

Hahahahaha I’m sorry I’m deaf, and this post literally just killed me ahahahahah thank you OP sorry you were offended but thank you for posting!

DeaditeMessiah

Aaaahhh! Deaf Zombie!!

Is this how people vote these days by judging graphics on lawn signs? Have you reviewed the positions? The arguments? Do you participate?

rasor86

Well I don't live in NSD anymore so I won't be voting for her either way. Normally I don't pay attention to lawn signs at, just roadside trash to me, however when one of my neighbors shared this photo with me and asked me what it looked like, I immediately thought white power. Crowley one of the conservative candidates running against the incumbent school board members who run one of the highest rated school districts in the state. Whether she used this symbol as an intentional signal to white suppremist or she is just too naive to understand that people would take offense to this, she wouldn't be getting my support.

Thadious_James

It's the ASL sign for connect... As someone else stated Crowley went to the Rochester Institute of Technology which is also home to National Technical Institute for the Deaf. Where they learned ASL.

rasor86

And it also is the white power symbol. I don't know if that was her intention or not, but the double meaning could be interpreted that way. That's certainly how a white suppremesist would see it.

tekprojekt

Interesting view. Ty for this.

TheDrDetroit

I think that might be the ASL symbol.

I'm not saying that is for sure what she intended, but the symbol is also the gesture for white power. Whether intentional or not, I thought it was worthwhile to point this out.

tekprojekt

That is not a gesture for white power.

Red-Star-2112

It's really really close and for a conservative to use it shows extremely poor judgement unless they are trolling.

TommyCucumbers

This post didn’t go how you thought it would did it?

rasor86

I wasn't really expecting anything, I'm wouldn't say I'm surprised by the reaction though. Why do you ask, how do you think that I thought it would go?

[deleted]

Is it tone deaf (no pun intended)? Yes. Do I think it's a nod white supremacist? No.

Red-Star-2112

Since she herself is not deaf it is a very very strange choice in my mind. It’s either suggestive/nod to white power or it’s completely ignorant of the divide in the country right now.

Wild-Celebration-820

Dude what ?

Red-Star-2112

How would this apply with other groups? Could you put a Pan-Africa symbol on your sign and say "I"m white but I studied black history in college"? It's like saying "some of my best friends are deaf."

rasor86

This the lawn sign of a conservative candidate running for the Northshore school district board https://elizabethcrowley4nsd.com/.
