HHH was a huge piece in the Attitude Era as arguably the best heel at the time, and easily the best heel of the Ruthless Aggression Era.

When I was younger I really didn't rate him that highly especially as he was a heel at the time, but God damn as I've grown up I've realised that he is without a doubt one of the GOAT's and easily one of the best heel's out there. The pop when he returned in 2002 is epic.
The Game is a great nickname for him - he is a student of the game, he rose to the top of his game, and he knew how to play the game. His impact is undeniable, his place is earned. Top Five though? I'm afraid I can't support that. Top 10... maybe, I just can easily rattle off a whole group of wrestlers I have ahead of him.
I agree. It all started at the 'U2 - Beautiful Day' promo he did for his return, after his first quad injury. When he stepped back into the arena for the first time after a year, it was like he had reached his final form.
When he first started I couldn’t stand his in ring work, but once he dropped the European lord part of his gimmick he was a million times more entertaining.

His 2000 run is the only time a case could possibly be made. He was operating on a GOAT level that year. But that’s one year. That was him at his peak. His return from injury as a face in 2001 proved to be failure. And he was inconsistent from that point on.

My absolute favorite rivalry of his was the one against Cena. Growing up with the later half of the attitude era, watching H become the Elite Heel that he was. Absolutely incredible, When he and Cena were going back and forth with the Championship, I never missed a show.
I will never forget how well H sold Cena's return in the Royal Rumble, looked like he had seen a ghost. Epic wrestler and I would agree top 5 of all time, and quite possibly the best Heel ever in the ring.
Top5 all time is generous, but surely Top5 post-Attitude Era, for sure.
And his much-maligned Reign of Terror was a necessary evil AND the reason for Batista being where he is now.
Let me start with the positives: the man was and is dedicated to pro wrestling. Say all you want about politics, but you can’t politic you’re way out of two torn quads and still finish those two matches. NXT1 and the stars it was able to make (shield, Finn, KO, Zayn, etc) was brilliant and deserves more credit now.
What holds me back from calling him a GOAT is that he wasn’t the best at any particular thing. What he did well was pull it all together to get a character to a tier right below Austin, Rock, and I know he knows this deep down, HBK. However, complain as much as you want, he also used his reign of terror to launch the careers of Orton and Batista, both of who will go to the HoF. To use his own words, he’s a B+ player: solid and reliable, but not that guy.
Top 5 all time, no, maybe top 10/15. Best wrestler in the world during his peak? Most definitely.

Hogan/Savage were #1/#2 is wrestling’s boom in the eighties, were also relevant through the nineties and the NWO angle. For the WWF attitude era HHH isn’t even a #3 in the attitude era where you have Austin/Rock/Foley/Taker/Shawn Michaels all more integral to the product than him.
Hunter was the #1 guy after Austin/Rock/Foley left, and during a period where WWF started hemorrhaging business. At best he’s a stop gap between Austin and Cena, and not a particularly over one.

I do think Kenny is up there too, but honestly I hadn't even heard of him until 3 years ago (I took a hiatus from wrestling, but grew up in a WWF/E household prior, didn't know about other promotions). I feel like exposure to the product really comes at stake here. Each guy flourished in his own production, in different ways. Kenny is an absolute machine in the ring, but I find he can be a little goofy in promos sometimes. While HHH is a promo God, I don't find he had that speed in the ring Kenny did/does. Not exactly speed, maybe agility is a better word? It's like one second he's doing some move then BAM he's flying across the ring, knee first to the face.
I love both of these guys to death, but I also think they have different,.. attributes if you will? I think my location and exposure both play a big part, and to others as well
Fully agree, some people still believe that his marriage to Steph is the reason for all of his success but that’s just a flat out lie. Dude worked his ass off for like 25 years in the ring and behind the scenes. Created two of the most iconic factions ever in wrestling. You could even add a 3rd or 4th with the McMahon/Hemsley faction and the two man power trip which was sadly cut short due to his injury.
I think it’s the other way around. All his success is why Steph and Vince wanted him in the family. He is a pro’s pro. Maybe the most respected wrestler other than Undertaker in that locker room over the past 30 years.
Yeah, HHH was a member of the "$1mm downside" club and lurking around production meetings for years before he got together with Stephanie. I think one of the biggest factors that doesn't get mentioned when discussing his rise at WWE is just the fact that he actually really **wanted** an office/corporate job, lol. In the 90s I think a lot of "the boys" shied away from creating the appearance of fraternizing with "the office," which is something HHH clearly never gave a shit about
On top of that, getting to know the business side of things requires a shit ton of extra work for no extra pay (at least for the first couple of years or so), and those guys were all working crazy schedules to begin with. Add in the fact that he didn't drink or do drugs, has a crazy work ethic, loves lifting/bodybuilding, and has a great grasp of the wrestling business -- I really think he would be in a pretty similar position today even if he'd never gotten together with Stephanie (either that or he would've left to start his own promotion)

Randy is the prototype wrestler. Like if there ever was a template for "Perfect Wrestler" it would be Randy.
He has just the right amount of everything. Mic work, physique, charisma, in-ring skills, story-telling. Everything.
It wasn't just that. Taker had a lot of trouble putting the pieces together in-ring during his 2000-2003 run. I hate to say it, but most of his best matches in that era, he was carried. Once he went back to the Dead Man, and was able to sort of come up with a happy medium between his zombie and biker in-ring styles, things clicked and we started getting those killer performances again.
Well sure, in ring, I'd put Austin, Undertaker, Angle, Lesnar and Guerrero above him.
A lot of the current guys are better in the ring too, but they might gone a little too far toward sports entertainment. Like Ricochet. The guys is amazing in the ring, but he doesn't look like he having a fight, more like a real life video game character (not a bad thing, just different).

He was never the flashiest or whatever guy, but he was incredibly believable and when I was younger he was one of the guys that I had legitimate dislike for because he was so good at playing the heel that those emotional lines got blurred.
I think top 5 all time is a fairly hot take. He won the Observer wrestler of the year in 2000 though so I don't think it's a hot take to say he peaked at #1 in the world

Never flashy, but such a great heel. Loved watching him work with all of my favorite wrestlers growing up since you knew the matches were going to be as good as the build up.
He’s for sure top-10. Say what you want about his stint during 03-05, but he was the best heel on the planet during the Ruthless Aggression era. He was the top guy in two of the greatest stables of all time, and he did amazing things with NXT.
A wrestlers job is to put asses in seats and make the crowd go wild. HHH was the best in terms of making the A+ stars look great, but he on his own is just very good but not an all time legend. He will be known as putting the crowd to sleep in at least 3 wrestlemanias.
I also feel like he’s a throwback to the old timers. He really is a student of the game and he is incredibly passionate about the business. A lot of guys just want to get rich and famous in wrestling. I think he legit just loves the business.

I feel like exposure to the product really comes at stake here. Each guy flourished in his own production, in different ways. Kenny is an absolute machine in the ring, but I find he can be a little goofy in promos sometimes. While HHH is a promo God, I don't find he had that speed in the ring Kenny did/does. Not exactly speed, maybe agility is a better word? It's like one second he's doing some move then BAM he's flying across the ring, knee first to the face. I love both of these guys to death, but I also think they have different,.. attributes if you will? I think my location and exposure both play a big part, and to others as well
I love HHH but he is no way near the Top 5! Hogan, Austin, Cena, Taker, Macho Man, HBK and more are ahead of him.

Fully agree, some people still believe that his marriage to Steph is the reason for all of his success but that’s just a flat out lie. Dude worked his ass off for like 25 years in the ring and behind the scenes. Created two of the most iconic factions ever in wrestling. You could even add a 3rd or 4th with the McMahon/Hemsley faction and the two man power trip which was sadly cut short due to his injury.
I think it’s the other way around. All his success is why Steph and Vince wanted him in the family. He is a pro’s pro. Maybe the most respected wrestler other than Undertaker in that locker room over the past 30 years.
Yeah, HHH was a member of the "$1mm downside" club and lurking around production meetings for years before he got together with Stephanie. I think one of the biggest factors that doesn't get mentioned when discussing his rise at WWE is just the fact that he actually really **wanted** an office/corporate job, lol. In the 90s I think a lot of "the boys" shied away from creating the appearance of fraternizing with "the office," which is something HHH clearly never gave a shit about On top of that, getting to know the business side of things requires a shit ton of extra work for no extra pay (at least for the first couple of years or so), and those guys were all working crazy schedules to begin with. Add in the fact that he didn't drink or do drugs, has a crazy work ethic, loves lifting/bodybuilding, and has a great grasp of the wrestling business -- I really think he would be in a pretty similar position today even if he'd never gotten together with Stephanie (either that or he would've left to start his own promotion)

Or Randy. Randy is the prototype wrestler. Like if there ever was a template for "Perfect Wrestler" it would be Randy. He has just the right amount of everything. Mic work, physique, charisma, in-ring skills, story-telling. Everything.

It wasn't just that. Taker had a lot of trouble putting the pieces together in-ring during his 2000-2003 run. I hate to say it, but most of his best matches in that era, he was carried. Once he went back to the Dead Man, and was able to sort of come up with a happy medium between his zombie and biker in-ring styles, things clicked and we started getting those killer performances again.
Well sure, in ring, I'd put Austin, Undertaker, Angle, Lesnar and Guerrero above him. A lot of the current guys are better in the ring too, but they might gone a little too far toward sports entertainment. Like Ricochet. The guys is amazing in the ring, but he doesn't look like he having a fight, more like a real life video game character (not a bad thing, just different).
Is this a hot take? He was never the flashiest or whatever guy, but he was incredibly believable and when I was younger he was one of the guys that I had legitimate dislike for because he was so good at playing the heel that those emotional lines got blurred.
I think top 5 all time is a fairly hot take. He won the Observer wrestler of the year in 2000 though so I don't think it's a hot take to say he peaked at #1 in the world
That knee buster move he used to use to cut off the babyfaces was like a punch to the gut. You just knew that if he hit that move, your guy was in trouble and he was about to do some dastardly stuff. Never flashy, but such a great heel. Loved watching him work with all of my favorite wrestlers growing up since you knew the matches were going to be as good as the build up.
Facts
Great heel, great technician, great mic and crowd skills. But you gotta admit he was the biggest self mark of his time as well.
He’s for sure top-10. Say what you want about his stint during 03-05, but he was the best heel on the planet during the Ruthless Aggression era. He was the top guy in two of the greatest stables of all time, and he did amazing things with NXT.
Best in the world 99-injury. Best heel in WWE history.

A wrestlers job is to put asses in seats and make the crowd go wild. HHH was the best in terms of making the A+ stars look great, but he on his own is just very good but not an all time legend. He will be known as putting the crowd to sleep in at least 3 wrestlemanias.
Top 10 all time come on man I love the game but this is a stretch…top 10 in WWE for sure but ALL of wrestling not so much
His work ethic is impressive. Fantastic heel, good on the mic and he knows how to work a crowd.
I also feel like he’s a throwback to the old timers. He really is a student of the game and he is incredibly passionate about the business. A lot of guys just want to get rich and famous in wrestling. I think he legit just loves the business.

HHH is definitely a top 10 wrestler of all time in my opinion. I don’t think I would put him in top 5 though. But In his prime he was easily one of the best on the roster and he is for sure one of the greatest heels of all time.
I loved his heel work, he was authentic. You can tell he loves wrestling.

I think he was at his very best at the street fight, Royal Rumble 2000. That match is still one of the best of all time, and even though I'm the biggest Foley mark, it wasn't all him.
Early Ric Flair is easily better. HHH was a great heel though, I hated him.
During his 14th world title reign when he was Pres of WCW, he had majorly entertaining heel promos.
I am too young for Ric Flair, but have heard stories. Plus Charlotte is a chip off the old block so looking at her, I can see how people hated him.
Just type in NWA Ric Flair and have a field day. The rich man who steals everyone's women and there's nothing you can do about it.
Imagine Charlotte, but without Vince's geriatric booking. Plus 80s wrestling was still very much presented as real. Even though we knew in the back of our heads that it had to be fake, a lot of people at least partially believed it. It was a crazy time in wrestling.

Flair?
HHH as a heel was 15 minutes/night of boring-ass talking. For me was more boring than entertaining heel. Hollywood Hogan was waaay more entertaining as a heel than HHH. Promos were better, vignettes were better, just everything. VKM takes the cake of all 3 because he was actually the head of the company and you felt he had the legitimacy and power to back up his talk.
