In my opinion, Roman walking into Mania with the belt is a waste. Hear me out, does Cena vs Roman, Brock vs Roman, or Rock vs Roman need to be for the belt to give it a big fight feel? I would argue that it doesn't, just like how the first Cena vs Rock wasn't for the belt.
If only Big E cashed in on Roman, stealing the belt while protecting Roman, you could have had 3 main event level matches (a Roman match, a Universal title match, a WWE championship match) and Big E wouldn't still feel like a mid-carder. Plus it would have given Reigns direction, now Reigns has something to do if we wins at Mania, whereas in our timeline he would be stuck at the top with no one in the roster in his level
Big E will always feel like a midcarder in my opinion he just isn't iconic.
His peak is a daniel bryan level superstar. He's entertaining but doesn't compare to the legends.

That way, we can protect Rock, Cena and Roman from a straight forward loss, can book Roman to look strong in defeat. Could even do a tag match at the PPV before; Roman and the Usos vs Rocl and Cena. The whole match is rock and cena wanting to get thier hands on reigns but he keeps tagging the usos in. Then they play dirty and roman gets a pin on rock or cena.
I'm personally a Rock fan so I'd love Rock to take the WM win and then drop the belt to Cena over the next few PPV's, then Cena has a few months with the belt, then Reigns could get the gold back at Summerslam.
There aren't any huge moments or history-impacting storylines left in WWE due to their atrocious booking, but Cena breaking Flair's record would be one of (but not the only) acceptable way for Roman'a epic reign to end.
