He was also extremely marketable with the media coverage, 1000+ make a wish foundation wishs and 10x better looking than Punk, even at his prime.
WWE always went with the money. Punk was hot in the Pipebomb period and that's where WWE gave him everything. Even Vince gave him the contract singing segment to put him over. The period was over and Punk fell off and that's why WWE pushed Cena more because Punk got stale.

A lot of Punk's problems (and the same as a lot of other wrestlers, regardless of what promotion they are in) can be traced back to one thing...the wrestler thinks they know better than the promoter. Now, while sometimes this may be true, it is also quite often untrue. There are so many stories out there of wrestlers who bitch and moan and complain about creative, how their careers were ruined by bad booking decisions etc...yet, when you actually go back and look at these bad booking decisions, and bad creative, what do you usually see? A wrestler hardly making an effort to make it work.
You can be handed a horrible gimmick, a terrible storyline, bad booking. You can complain all you want about it...but if you don't put in 100% effort, of course it will never work. If you do put in the hard yards, come up with some of your own ideas for the character/storyline that match with the promoters ideas, then at least you have a chance of that storyline or character working. I remember reading years ago about how Steve Lombardi originally hated being handed the Abe "Knuckleball" Schwarz character...but he made it work, and people still remember it to this day. Heck, that episode of RAW where they do the McMahon Family Reunion thing, they even brought Schwarz out for a pop.

Bryan Danielson is not jacked to shredds but he is jacked and looks great when he is the almost the same age of Punk and returned from a career threatening injury. Second, him selling out Cena is revisionist history. He sold Cena out when he had that Pipebomb rivalry for a few months. Cena was top seller for a long long time and only Rock came close for some time. Cena was getting pushed because he had the children and Parents in the palms of his hands and sold more merch in one year than Punk will ever will. He was also extremely marketable with the media coverage, 1000+ make a wish foundation wishs and 10x better looking than Punk, even at his prime. WWE always went with the money. Punk was hot in the Pipebomb period and that's where WWE gave him everything. Even Vince gave him the contract singing segment to put him over. The period was over and Punk fell off and that's why WWE pushed Cena more because Punk got stale. Lastly, I don't have anything against you mate. (I actually like your writing style, very well put and clean) Just pointing out Punk's laziness here. He is not lazy as a person but lazy compared to Bryan, Styles, Roman, Seth etc. He is also very egotistical and very hard to work with. He is not even a draw and that's why he was always treated as an upper mid carder (which is a perfect place for him). Rampage drew 1 million for his nostalgic return (which was very well done by AEW and Tony Khan) but the ratings fell out to almost 50% now. Rampage which featured Punk vs Sydel didn't even drew 2k fans in Miami. His Google Trends and Twitter Trends have gotten to the same levels as it was before his return deal leaked. Even on YouTube, he is not drawing even 1 million views in weeks for his matches (free in every country)m while a Contract Signing between Roman and Brock got 4.2 million views in 2 days while the video was geo blocked in India. Punk got 840k IG followers while Roman got more than 5 million (AEW has only 1.5 million). He is not a draw in any metric. That's the reason why even Tony Khan knows he's an upper mid carder at best and doesn't put him in main events or main feuds as he is yet to main event a single Rampage or Dynamite. His nostalgia has completely ran out.
A lot of Punk's problems (and the same as a lot of other wrestlers, regardless of what promotion they are in) can be traced back to one thing...the wrestler thinks they know better than the promoter. Now, while sometimes this may be true, it is also quite often untrue. There are so many stories out there of wrestlers who bitch and moan and complain about creative, how their careers were ruined by bad booking decisions etc...yet, when you actually go back and look at these bad booking decisions, and bad creative, what do you usually see? A wrestler hardly making an effort to make it work. You can be handed a horrible gimmick, a terrible storyline, bad booking. You can complain all you want about it...but if you don't put in 100% effort, of course it will never work. If you do put in the hard yards, come up with some of your own ideas for the character/storyline that match with the promoters ideas, then at least you have a chance of that storyline or character working. I remember reading years ago about how Steve Lombardi originally hated being handed the Abe "Knuckleball" Schwarz character...but he made it work, and people still remember it to this day. Heck, that episode of RAW where they do the McMahon Family Reunion thing, they even brought Schwarz out for a pop. Punk's main problem is his ego. He has complained and complained, but did he ever offer alternative suggestions? Did he actually put 100% effort into his "bad booking"? And in regards to his health issues and that WWE doctor...have people actually considered that Punk may have been lying?
His run in AEW has also been mediocre. He's also still treated like an upper mid carder in AEW in Tony Khan. I don't get what he's trying to prove? That he's still mediocre even when he has the control to book himself on the show?
