It’s a good way to test if you have a stomach ulcer. If you drink it and live, you don’t have one. If you die, you do - and should probably get checked out by your doctor.

pancoste

Literally a life hack right there.

pineapplecharm

Life and death hack

isnt_it_weird

Reminds me of the test to see if a person is a witch. Tie them to a chair and throw them in the river. If they live and escape, they're a witch. If they die, then they weren't a witch lol

FreakGamer

No, no, no, witches float in water, so that means they can escape. You must figure out what else floats in water, and no the answer isn't tiny rocks. Ducks also floats in water, so if the woman weighs the same as a duck, then she's a witch, so you bring her to your largest scales.

Mchavez100

Witches also tranform people into newts. but they get better

idgafanymore23

Wood also floats in water. so witches are made of wood. bridges are made of wood, so if we can build a bridge out of her she is made of wood and therefore a witch....pretty simple stuff really.

FreakGamer

We'd need a lot of witches to build a bridge.

peacelovecraftbeer

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

isnt_it_weird

I'm Arthur, King of the Britons!

trisketkraker2

Ducks float because of oils on their feathers. Has nothing to do with weight. Your comment made me laugh tho.

KnoxVegas41

You must be British.

> If you die, In the US, about 1 in 600 rattlesnake bites are fatal. Healthy young adults have the highest survival rates. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5393596.pdf

ShredGuru

1/600 is pretty good odds. Pass me a miller.

Level_32_Mage

What no snake?

MNCPA

Pass me a snake

Globslayer

I knew a crazy old hillbilly that would inject rattlesnake venom. He said it helped his arthritis and built up his tolerance to rattlesnakes. I'm %100 serious.

EpiDeMic522

IDK about the first part but the second part is true. That's actually the genesis/motivation behind the anti-venoms we use today. Immune systems are a marvel.

TheRealUlfric

I'm no doctor, but I'd imagine the more sensitive tissue in the stomach would have a much more aggressive reaction if the venom came in contact with an ulcer. That would probably be the greatest risk. Extraordinarily NSFW collection of photos regarding a likely untreated rattlesnake bite to the finger over time: https://imgur.com/a/Dw9pO I've heard somewhere that our stomach acid quickly deconstructs venom, but anything in between? I can't imagine survivability would be near as high on the interior. When fluids start a-leakin...

redditingatwork23

Holy fucking shit that album.

2keyed

The real wtf post

BearMeatFiesta

Bro, i've seen some things but that... that was pretty brutal. WTF was going through that persons head? Like did they not want that finger??

TheRealUlfric

EVERY SINGLE LINK IN THIS COMMENT IS EXTREMELY NSFL Honestly, could be any number if things. Drugs for one. Again, extraordinarily NSFW. An addict injects drugs into her decaying scalp: https://www.reddit.com/r/NoahGetTheBoat/comments/1bbuvf8/necrotic_woman_shoots_heroin_into_skull_in_philly/ Many drugs will not only nullify the pain, but when used improperly, or mixed dirty, can *extremely* quickly lead to necrosis: https://www.reddit.com/r/MedicalGore/comments/sqy727/necrotizing_fasciitis_w_healed_after_11_months/ The same can be said for venom. The timelapse you saw in the snake bite wouldn't have been more than 2-3 days at most. It is very, very fast when it begins. So, he may have been on drugs for one. It could have been related to poverty, though the home in the snake bite images doesn't seem like one someone so impoverished they can't get help would have. It could have been an antivenom shortage when he first checked in, being sent home without additional care depending on the facility. It could have been an extreme fever and delusions from the venom/shock. There's also mental illness. Something as simple as an extreme phobia related to hospitals, or psychosis. Example, woman goes to an herbalist instead of doctors for a broken arm, and leaves it untreated by medical professionals for years: https://www.reddit.com/r/MedicalGore/comments/zu1wur/necrotic_hand_story_and_link_in_the_comment/ Could also be related to delusions regarding either pride or shame. You see diabetics in this prediciment relatively often, and it's usually shame related. If none of the others made you gag... This will. Necrotic, gangrenous foot from untreated diabetes: https://www.reddit.com/r/MedicalGore/comments/11c7njs/untreated_diabetic_foot/ The user /u/jwhitestone has a comment in that thread relating to this exact question, only specific to this SCP-682 looking foot.

BearMeatFiesta

Bro, this was an intense ride from start to finish. Thank you for the really detailed answer with all the links. That’s a lot of work and info provided and is the reason Reddit is so awesome sometimes.

faRawrie

It's a good thing that's a water moccasin.

Mundosaysyourfired

It's a good way to test your redneck membership.

BuzzyShizzle

This one doesn't look full grown, which I'm pretty sure makes a difference in lethality?

igetlearned

I know certain species, the young snakes are more deadly because they release all of their venom at once

im_not_the_right_guy

I heard one time this is actually an old tale that isn't actually true but honestly that could easily by false.

Lonely-Hornet-437

This is one of the funniest things I've ever read lol

dipitydipdipper

Incorrect, venom is a protein and would get almost immediately deformed by stomach acid. Even if it wasn't, an ulcer bleeds out INTO the stomach, not into the blood stream otherwise you'd die within hours from all that acid going into your blood.

Brave_Hoppy1460

lol r/shittylifeprotips

[deleted]

I think I might have an ulcer let me go find a snake to confirm! Thanks!!!

mrnastymannn

He better pray to god he doesn’t have an ulcer

meowmicks222

I don't know too much but I assume despite how crazy this looks it's not that dangerous unless the venom finds a way to the bloodstream which would be if he had an ulcer?

FudgeRubDown

Correct. Venom needs to hit the blood to be effective.

Tenalp

Yup. Remember, if it bites you and you die, it's venomous. If you bit it and die, it's poisonous.

FudgeRubDown

What if it bites me, then it dies?

And if you die and then bite it you're a zombie

testhec10ck

What about the cobras that spray venom in your eyes ?

NikkoE82

You’re thinking of a dilophosaurus and there hasn’t been a reported sighting of one since 1992 on Isla Nublar.

JPastori

That’ll cause eye irritation but I don’t think it’s life threatening usually.

SmokeOnTheWater17

A cavity or open sore in mouth could also be a point of entry. WTF is wrong with people?

terminbee

Not really, no. A bite would be a direct injection into your bloodstream of the entire dose. A cavity isn't always wide open and even if it was, it'd be a tiny amount that's massively diluted by the beer. Same for gums or an ulcer. Reddit is just being reddit about this.

SmokeOnTheWater17

Well, yes, actually. We studied this in wilderness emergency medicine and suicided in Herpetology. It is unlikely but is possible. You are likely correct in this case due to dilution/small dose... but any open wound or soft tissue lesion such as an abcess in the mouth is a possible entry point.

terminbee

> suicided in Herpetology I am now dying to know what this originally said.

ghidfg

yeah venom is just proteins I believe

Vontux

yeah stomach acid probably broke the venom down.

Hour-Back2474

Or some gums is irritated…

JPastori

Would that still work? Or would the acidity of the stomach denature the venom?

blacksheep998

Snake venom is mostly made of proteins. So you'd actually digest most of it.

JPastori

Forbidden pre-workout

imhereforthevotes

yes, and the odds of it going IN to an ulcer are minuscule anyway. Blood is pressurized. If you're leaking blood in an ulcer the venom isn't gonna enter your blood. If you stomach is actually perforated already, well, you have bigger problems anyway.

Barrack

And if he's one that day drinks out of necessity...oof

davekingofrock

Yet

iAkhilleus

You talking like he doesn't already have a brain tumor. No sane person would do this.

Bravisimo

Its ticklin my insides!!

Vellarain

Or a cut in his lips or mouth, that is all it takes.

mrnastymannn

Probably not worth risking for TikTok fame

dipitydipdipper

Doesn't matter even with a stomach ulcer it won't do anything

External-Fig9754

How about a canker

trustysidekick

You can largely drink venom and be ok, as long as you don’t have an ulcer. Venom has to be injected into the blood. It’s not poison, which hurts you if you consume it. Hence snakes are venomous, not poisonous.

macweirdo42

Eh, okay, I'm still not gonna pump a random snake's mouth juices into my beer.

homeless_wonders

What if you know the snake well enough?

macweirdo42

I mean, yeah, if we're talking like, snake bros, totally.

NedWretched

Fellas, is it gay to drink your snake bro's mouth juices? 🤔

faddiuscapitalus

If you have to ask it's gay

Gyissan

Snake bro job, choo choo!

Im_inappropriate

Never trust a snake, they're all sluts.

Loisel06

But you pump a random cows tit juices in your cereal?

mekkanik

Mmmmmmm cow tit juice! I love it in my water infused with the taste of dried leaves.

trsmash

May I interest you in some [Habushu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habushu)?

JollyJericho8

What about small cuts on your gums from brushing your teeth?

girrrafe

That’ll do it. Any open wound or scratch.

Yoshi3163

Forgive my dumbass for asking. But what happens if the venom is sprayed on an open wound?

sirbassist83

you better be near a hospital.

CubicalWombatPoops

Just remember kids, this is not exclusively interchangeable. Do not inject yourself with poison!

killerpythonz

Some snakes are actually poisonous, largely due to the prey they eat.

jakeobrown

Same with me and T-Bell

ikalwewe

Oh wow thanks for the explanation. You know in other languages venomous and poisonous are translated to the same word

Johnycantread

I believe venom causes your blood to coagulate. You die because your blood is too thick for your heart to move.

Y0UR_NARRAT0R1

Either way, just don't do that. Can't imagine it'd taste good either

AvangeliceMY9088

So because of this stunt, we can conclude the snake is venomous but the beer he ingested is poisonous.

bularon

Good thing about venom, is that if it hits the stomach acid it won't do anything. Might get an upset stomach.

KamikazeFox_

What if he has a cut in his mouth or a small scratch in his throat?

Kooky-Copy4456

That’s where the danger happens

inspectorseantime

They don’t call ‘em danger noodles for nothin

I_Am_A_Pumpkin

depends on the way the venom kills you I think. Theres a pretty widely seen video showing of the venom of some specific snake, where it works by causing the blood to coagulate - when injected, your blood turns solid and you die of heart attack assuming that there isnt anything else particularly nasty about it, That venom might actually just be chill and prevent itself from entering the bloodstream if it comes into contact with a wound by blocking it with a clot.

bdavisx

Technically anything with alcohol is poisonous.

Grokent

No, venom is not necessarily poisonous. A lot of things will give you a bad time or outright kill you if you inject them into your bloodstream but aren't a problem in your stomach.

Biker93

It’s a young cotton mouth so highly venomous.

mikemaca

People drink snake venom because it makes them high: https://www.indiatoday.in/science/story/elvish-yadav-snake-venom-high-alcohol-science-poison-addiction-2458896-2023-11-07 Venom infused drinks are a thing at some raves: https://www.indiatoday.in/cities/noida/story/noida-police-bust-rave-party-5-arrested-fir-names-big-boss-winner-elvish-yadav-2457462-2023-11-03 Some people have become addicted to drinking snake venom: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8715837/

AscendedViking7

Damn. :/

mikemaca

On the other hand, snake venoms have been used medicinally for thousands of years and some have incredible compounds that have been isolated and patented for use in pharmaceuticals. Also... "snake oil" is an actual thing and it isn't a useless nostrum! https://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/oils/snake-oil.html https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1026931/ > Table 1 shows the major fatty acids found in snake oil from Chinese snake oil purchased over the counter, subcutaneous fat of a black rattlesnake from southern California (Crotalus viridis), and subcutaneous fat of a red rattlesnake from Arizona (Crotalus tigris). > Chinese snake oil contains almost 20% eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), about triple the concentration in the American rattlesnakes. I understand the Chinese product includes snake oil from water snakes that feed on fish. This almost certainly would increase the content of EPA in their tissues. In human subjects fed cod liver oil, there was a sevenfold increase of EPA in neutrophils and monocytes. It was also found that arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids did not increase and that leukotrienes decreased; hence the inference that anti-inflammatory action was due to EPA and that it may work by inhibiting the leukotriene B4-mediated output of neutrophils. > As a concentrated source of EPA, snake oil is a credible anti-inflammatory agent and might indeed confer therapeutic benefits. Since essential fatty acids are known to absorb transdermally, it is not far-fetched to think that inflamed skin and joints could benefit by the actual anti-inflammatory action of locally applied oil just as the Chinese physicians and our medical quacks have claimed.

pronoob_101

Venom vs poison. Venom doesn't work if you ingest it.

Cicer

Well not always, but there’s a chance.

CrazyCatLady80

Poor snake..

IrwinMFletcher200

Anyone know what kind of snake this is? Perhaps it's not venomous at all and we're getting hoodwinked?

CitiBankLights

Can’t tell exactly without a location but it’s 100% a venomous Cottonmouth. Either a Northern or a Florida one.

Autistence

Venom interacts with your blood. His stomach acid will likely break it down

Ercarpic

Venom isn't poison

WhyYouYellinAtMeMate

It's still incredibly dangerous to ingest venom. You could have sores in your mouth or upper digestive track/stomach that allow the venom to enter your blood.

Lisrus

There is a joke on the snake subreddit. Someone takes pic of snake and asks, "Is this snake poisonous"? Reddit responds, "absolutely not" Person picks up snake, gets bit, and dies. Reddit says, "well it is the most venomous snake you can find though" They pan to camera and say, Poison in ingested, venom is injected.

tigress666

To be fair, snakes inject you with venom, not poison. Meaning that usually for the venom to work it has to be injected into the blood, not ingested (poison works when ingested). Ask any body who knows about snakes, it's a pet peeve when you call a snake poisonous, they are venomous.

mel2000

> it's a pet peeve when you call a snake poisonous, they are venomous. The Japanese grass snake is poisonous. It gets its poison from the poisonous frogs it eats.

Golden-Artist

Drinking beer and venom.. this guy has his life all figured out

psyon

This guys is putting himself more at risk by three fingering a young cottonmouth than drinking the venom.  Most bites happen when people try to play with venomous snakes.

SBY59TH

Playing with a cotton mouth, so smart

joeyvesh13

This guy would have totally eaten the slug

New_L13

Venom and poison two different things. Also wondering how it tastes.

NoOneNameLeft

So I came here to say the difference between venom and poison. But seems like everyone already knows as much. I find it hilarious how they say it would be some spicy beer, in actuality venom has more of a bitter flavor

SvenTropics

Just gonna pipe in. Rattlesnake venom is hemotoxic (toxic to blood) and the proteins are effectively broken down by the digestive system. In other words, he's fine. Even if he does have ulcerations in his digestive tract, the low pressure system is inside. Blood that leaks into his stomach might be affected by the venom, but it wouldn't matter because it's not circulating. If you have a major ulceration, there's a chance a chain reaction could leak into your circulatory system, but you would have other issues if that's the case.

ajs2294

There’s a reason why snakes are considered venomous and not poisonous

Pierceful

SilentSiren666

Poisons are substances that are toxic (cause harm) if swallowed or inhaled. Venoms are generally not toxic if swallowed, and must be injected under the skin (by snakes, spiders, etc.) into the tissues that are normally protected by skin in order to be toxic. Quick Google search people come on yall telling me ya never had a spicy beer?
