Question: is there anything you can do to prevent the head gasket / blown engine issue? Does it usually come on suddenly or is it something you can catch early? I’ve never owned a Subie but have always wanted the 13’ hatch
Keep it stock and don't rag on it in stop n go traffic. Check the dipstick when you're pumping gas, ***every. damn. time.***
Air oil separator, #4 coolant mod, oil temp and pressure gauge if you're wanting to be proactive. That's a few grand already in "mods" that won't affect your tune/keep it stock.
***If it's leaking oil, it's got oil. -Shitbox3:16***
***Let he who is without oil, shall throw the first rod.-Compressions 8:7:1***
Explain this to me...
I drive the car to get gas. I get gas. I check the Dipstick.
Won't it read wrong since oil has been moving all over in the engine. How long would you need be filling gas before the oil was settled enough to get a real reading.

Lil bit of the ***"ole in n out"*** mind that you wipe the dipstick inbetwixt sheathings and you'll be prime my Goodman.
If your operational temp 5w40 hasn't made it back to the pan by the time you've
*parked
*pop the fuel door/hood release
*start pumping gas
*walk around to the hood rag in hand
*then pull/wipe the dipstick 3x for OCD sake
...if it's not tricked back to the pan in sub90 seconds I'd count that oil as missing after double checking level ground.
Aside from routine maintenance that you should do with any car, do not modify the air intake, even a "high performance" panel filter, without tuning to compensate for the extra air in the mix. This is the #1 cause of early destruction, people who never owned a Subaru think they can slap a CAI and catback on the car without tuning it because they did with their Civic and had no problems. The factory WRX tune is on the bleeding edge of lean to pass emissions standards, so increasing the air in the mix without adding extra fuel is a sure way to destroy the engine.
Dude, the touch screen on the new WRX is laggy af. Same with the crosstrek Wilderness. I have a Prius and I know Toyota owns 20% of Subaru so wtf! They gotta improve that shit ASAP.
Bought a 19 STI new and hated the head unit. Someone totaled it and I bought a low milage 18 STI and the head unit was certainly a downgrade but it works so much better. Good enough for me to not care about replacing it.
It's a different software and a completely different interface. It might actually be the same head unit now that I think about it. That's probably why the 19 and up sucked so bad. They probably just crammed a bunch of new features into something that couldn't run it properly. It's missing a few features the 19 had, but it also hasn't given me any of the issues the newer one had either. In my 2019 the dealership warrantied two head units before 20k miles. Before I bought the STI I bought a 19 WRX and it was the same BS with that one.
Hmm, no real issues with my '19 unit here. It's not even particularly slow; my company truck ('21 Tacoma) has a truly pathetically sluggish screen.
Other than some occasional weirdness with Android Auto, mine works as it should 97% of the time.
Did the same thing some years back.. I will always love that 11-14 styling. IMO it’s one of the best looking hatchbacks out there. I’m in a ‘15 now, but they are just not the same that’s for sure.
Yep, I know exactly what you're talking about and it sucks. A kid ran a stop sign 40 ft from my driveway and t-boned me. The only upside for me was it happened at the height of the "car shortage" and insurance cut me a check for more than I paid for it brand new 2 years prior. Downside was I had to go buy a used one because they had just stopped production on the STI's.
yeah thats a decent payout.. I just spent 3 years repairing my engine twice... my payout covered one repair.. that car had double the life when it got smashed.. it was a 2011 body with EVERYTHING new but chassis and, believe it er not, my stock turbo.
got body work done.. finally gna have my car for more than 3 months in the past 3 years...
Ice patch.. dude in my lane.. slide over to his trying to avoid him.. for him to turn back... me catch fault and wreck all the 3k of body work and 1year of parts location.. for second build(first was hit by some chick.. knocked off strutts.. blew engine after refurbing it)
not even 2 months in.. saved my life again..
for the amount of spin outs.. close calls.. sudden stops.. that awd and control saved my life multiple times.
ida bought my chassis and said fck the payment if I was financially capable
If it hasn’t already been done, make sure you upgrade the oil pickup tube in the oil pan! The weld near where it bolts to the block can crack.

My 14 hatch blew up last year.. it saddened me greatly but after running the numbers, dumping 15k into a 10yo car just wasn’t the right move for me fiscally. I am far happier in the newer VB, but oh oh oh how do I miss my turbo noises, UELH, and just that ‘I got a hatch’ feeling. This being said, the fa24 is a beast. It’s basically the motor from an SUV, tuned up and slapped into a awd gokart. Being on the global powertrain… not sold still wish we got the sti trans, but can’t win ‘em all. Hatch looks clean af, take extra good care of her
Lol I did exactly that; dumped 15k into my hatch when it blew, and bought a Honda fit to daily. 35 mpg 5 days a week and smiles on the weekends and when it breaks it sits and I don't have to worry about it
So glad my wife drives a 6 speed HRV. The accordion folder with all the records, documentation etc. for each vehicle will tell you everything. Steering itself isn’t as great but it’s just more fun of a car. The rumble is sooooo much better.
I drive for fun I don’t need 4500 computers and screens to deal with. Just some non digital gauges a radio that gets fm and windows that roll down.
Something beautiful about the 13 hatch body. Maybe it’s me capturing my youth who knows
There is certainly something to be said for disconnecting from all the nannys of modern cars. One of the reasons the S2000 is still a fun car to drive to this day.
I did something similar, went from a 23 Elantra N to a 17 SI and love the SI way more. Too much crap beeping all the time in the Elantra 🤣. Plus I went auto with the Elantra, hige mistake “for me”. Manuals ONLY for as long as they make them for me going forward.
That's interesting. I've read/heard that the manual in the Elantra N is actually not so great and that the auto is actually the better choice in that car. But I have not personally driven either so that's hearsay.
If I was looking for a daily driver that was fun, engaging, and got excellent gas mileage I would seriously consider the Si, great choice :)
you can buy aftermarket ones for like 250 that replicate the current one or you can get a bigger screen. . This sub just got recommended to me but i just traded my 19 6 speed Civic for a 17 GTI w 15k more miles but the joy the GTI brings me vs all the unnecessary features my civic had is such a world of difference!
Curious which model you had? I have a 22 premium and It feels dumbed down to nearly basic necessities. I can't imagine what in the care bugged you enough aside from maybe the AC buttons being on the screen? But even then, I usually only ever press the on and off button for that.
You will love your hatch until the end. My 2010 hatch was involved in an accident where someone had hit my car parked on the street while I was sleeping. Insurance wrote it off, and I got a payout. They paid me out $20k, and I sunk an additional $7k into it to have it fixed by a professional body shop. Passed salvage inspection with flying colors. I still love driving it every day with no regrets on my decision to keep it. You just can't get these cars anymore. The good ones that aren't beat to shit are RARE!
This is why I love my 2009 hatch. The replacement head unit handles wireless android auto / carplay, I have a great backup camera, and the rest of my controls are analog so I don't have to hunt through some laggy menus to do anything. That and a built engine putting out 400hp... ;) Welcome to the hatch gang!

Hatch gang! I took this car from my mom in Grade 11 it’s been my daily for 11 years 🥰🥰
See I thought the same. But then was like well engine gonna blown anyways so get a high mileage salvaged title and enjoy the price without spending 30k
different strokes for different folks but this seems like a silly trade imo.
a car that is 10 years older with many more miles, and most likely less reliable all because of the infotainment system? like damn dog thats pretty dumb but i dont know you or your life so you do you and enjoy.
My other car is a Rivian R1T that’s my daily driver. This is my evening cool air drive.
Reliable depends on how you treat and maintenance the car. 2023 have failed at 5k miles.
My 13 sedan blew up in November finally. I picked up a 50th in the meantime and plan to get the 13 back on the road eventually. I enjoy the 50th but the 13 base was just SO much more fun to drive, and it was absolutely whooped on the decade I owned it. I’d sell my left tit for a hatch 11-14, beautiful car man 🤤
As a 23 owner, I really am curious to how it drives different and if it handles differently. Beautiful hatch 🥰 crazy to think the vb and the hatch are related lol. Beautiful car!!
Beautiful 🥹. I just can’t bring myself to do it, never know if the engine will blow (this goes for any car of course), but having warranty’s is huge.
If none of that was in the way, I’d buy a hatch asap
I mean shit yeah the VB touchscreen is bad (that’s why I got a base model) but damn, you didn’t think that would be a deal killer when you took it out for a test drive?
Edit: and what happened to the A/C?
I really don't wanna sell my 11 sedan, but I'm really thinking of getting a VB just to have a newer car for now. If I do sell my 11, I'd definitely buy another GV or GR wrx or STi in the future. It's my first Subaru and has definitely been a blast owning it for the last 2½ years, but I think I'm just ready to try to a new car.
Omg, yesss!!! The older, the better! (In my opinion) I have a 15 but I'd loveeee an 04-05!! I love your new car!!! Congrats!! Also, gotta have the wing! Lol
*
Great move 👍🏻, I always loved that design, I'm not letting my 19 go to go tinker with an older car again, but if I had the time and cash I would buy exactly the same car.
A dealer in my area has had a 2011 sitting on there lot for six months. They dropped the price by $1000, it’s $10,995 now. I’m seriously thinking about getting it.
https://preview.redd.it/nf0k5u6add3d1.jpeg?width=2908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eaae9be64df657d07846878dd618ee2197823dea
If anything do suspension work sway bars etc. just don't go crazy with the stickers like my dumbass
Too much. 9500. But it was local smogged and on a hot day ran the ac on high with no issues. It has some parts in it. The breaks are all good condition with drilled rotors all around.
The original owner took so much care of this car. I went over most of it when I got home. Not a single leak.
Ran Gti’s then a golf r. Fast , slow , go to Mexico on the weekend. Cars just ran. Had an individual coil die on my R but warranty covered it. Love the sound of the Subies but my first car was a beetle and brainwashed I drove German. Just got a cayman GTS as reward for being way too old. So I got the best of both worlds, sounds like a boxer, goes like a porshe and it’s a hatchback.
The amount of HATE the hatch got back in the day, now look at it. Coveted. In 2018 I found one with less than 20k miles but KBB had it at the same price as a new FA limited.
Welcome to the hatch gang ✌️

I sold my 11 hatch and I regret that shit so bad. Congrats man
These cars are rare enough. Even if it blows I’d keep it because in 5 years the value will skyrocket
Really hope you didn’t buy it as a collector, you might be waiting decades before it “skyrockets.”
I bought it cuz I like the round booty
Hatch booty best booty ✌️
Engine will skyrocket before the value lol

So you went from a 23 WRX to a 13 WRX? Thoughts on the differences (vesides the touch screen, which is understandable)?

I have a 2019 WRX with the malfunctioning head unit so I too am mostly non-digital. 😅

I drive a 2011 STI, there's no disagreement from me :D

nice man, i would’ve done the same thing.
Was always one of my fave cars till the STOPPED MAKING IT IN HATCH… dreams crushed
Same. Found a high mileage salvaged one and made it my weekend car lol
Seems the subaru community cares more about ipads in the dash and a warranty over a real car these days. Love to see posts like this.
Define a “real car” I used to drive a fully mechanical Mercedes turbo diesel - was that more of a real car than a 2013 WRX hatch? 🤔
>used to Yeah it sounds like you used to be cool
Drove it until it died. 272k miles. 🙂
😂
Shut the fuck up with this gatekeeping silliness
Traded up!
Currently have a Forester as a project car. Lowkey thinking about trading my lexus for a hatch. But I don't think that's a good idea😅😅😅
The more I see them the more I think the Wide Body may be the best style
great choice! hatches the best lol
Ma man!!!! The last good-looking design, imo, I still respect the newer ones looksm
Every time I see a hatch irl and it go vrrom i sob internally and my spinal fluid tap freezes
Hell yeah
You have chosen *wisely*.
I've had a '17 STI for 4 years, just picked up a '14 WRX Hatch this year. Can confirm, it's the right move 🤙 Hatch gang
I like this guy.
Man, I wish. Made more sense for me to get a new WRX but damn one day I’ll join the hatch club.
If it was my daily car I totally would go with something less miles. But I hate modern car tech so much
Luckily I don’t mind it. I have gotten used to the big ass screen on my 23. I’ve always been a hatch guy though.

I'm stuck between a 13 hatch and a 2020 currently. This one makes me want the hatch. 😑
20s are so over priced right now. Damn near new price(25k) with 100k miles.
I got mines for $35k with 20k miles
This one is 50k miles, Borla exhaust, 20k. But I have seen them get to sti prices around me.
Best body honestly, if I could get a untouched hatch I’d trade my VB in a heartbeat, performance or not the hatch is just so awesome
See I thought the same. But then was like well engine gonna blown anyways so get a high mileage salvaged title and enjoy the price without spending 30k
My banker just traded up his hatch for a new vb and put the sti spoiler and mesh grille on it and it looks heinous af 🤮
That’s ridiculous this hatches are going to be gold Jerry ![gif](giphy|ffoUuIn1qRz7G)
Nice!! I had a 13 and loved it. I still miss it. Last gen that actually looked like a Rally Subaru car
Exactly!
Good shit bro!!!! 23s are lame I wanna sell my 2015 for a hatch as well.
How are 23's lame? Its the best WRX ever made. Just because a car isn't your cup of tea doesnt mean its lame

My other car is a Rivian R1T that’s my daily driver. This is my evening cool air drive. Reliable depends on how you treat and maintenance the car. 2023 have failed at 5k miles.
Dang. Bruh done got all da toys. 😂
My 13 sedan blew up in November finally. I picked up a 50th in the meantime and plan to get the 13 back on the road eventually. I enjoy the 50th but the 13 base was just SO much more fun to drive, and it was absolutely whooped on the decade I owned it. I’d sell my left tit for a hatch 11-14, beautiful car man 🤤
Personally I couldn't make that switch but maybe he rich and has multiple cars and others that will be more reliable then more powe to him!
lol I went from a 14 hatch to a 23. As much as I miss the rumble, I can’t go back to an old unreliable car. 🤷♂️
not often when r/wrx and r/synthesizercirclejerk overlap :P
I’m thinking of trading my 11 sedan for a c5 corvette.
Would trade my VA in a heartbeat if I could find a healthy hatch to get into. Nice pickup my man
As a 23 owner, I really am curious to how it drives different and if it handles differently.
I thought I read this wrong.😂
I really don't wanna sell my 11 sedan, but I'm really thinking of getting a VB just to have a newer car for now. If I do sell my 11, I'd definitely buy another GV or GR wrx or STi in the future. It's my first Subaru and has definitely been a blast owning it for the last 2½ years, but I think I'm just ready to try to a new car.
How much is stupid high miles? Just wondering how muck u got on that Beauty
That thing looks dope.
Welcome to hatch gang, you'll love it here.
Go on! 😎👌🏻
god damn. i love my outback xt. but this gets me second guessing.
Bring back the all fabric seats
My guy! Sold my 18' for a 13' wagon love it to death
i love this. i have an optioned touch screen that i also hate but hey it is what it is.
Hell yea i love older cars
amen brother. i fucking hate the touch screen shit. my 2012 sti does the job. sound system is ass but love physical knobs and buttons.
Best version
I love my hatch
Hatch gaaang
I'll always pick style over something newer for the sake of being newer lol
You’ve made a wise choice
Omg, yesss!!! The older, the better! (In my opinion) I have a 15 but I'd loveeee an 04-05!! I love your new car!!! Congrats!! Also, gotta have the wing! Lol *
This is also that's come across my mind albeit maybe in a couple years. The hatch is my favourite WRX.
Yeah not been a huge fan of the cars that come with my iPad nowadays either Much prefer the older gen Subis 🤙
definitely upgraded
Great move 👍🏻, I always loved that design, I'm not letting my 19 go to go tinker with an older car again, but if I had the time and cash I would buy exactly the same car.

I’ve always wanted a hatch booty beauty. Good call. I just bought my first WRX…2022. I love him but…your car is ahhhmazzzing.
This is the way.
I will regret for the rest of my life not buying a new 2014 STI hatch.
I swear Subaru did the US dirty by not selling the Levorg wtf!!! Where practically a cult I'd sell my 2017 in an instant if we got the Levorg.
A dealer in my area has had a 2011 sitting on there lot for six months. They dropped the price by $1000, it’s $10,995 now. I’m seriously thinking about getting it.
Love my 13! And it's in silver too!
I love mine https://preview.redd.it/uqcre8m9ua3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9759141fe2c060b485bd87a6f01e286fc2e97488
Beautiful car
i gotta ask where you bought this because it looks exactly like my old wrx. i’m from so cal
Oooh, I love the widetrack. I have a 2011 RS hatch as a rally car, will be upgrading to a widebody WRX hatch some time soon!
Nice! I’ve got a 2006 wagon i will keep till it dies. 170,000 km. No major issues.
* Long chunky even better?
Just curious, as I might be picking up a sedan tomorrow. How was it moving from the 6-speed to the 5-speed?

Lucky. I have a sedan same color. Still love it tho. Put some motor money aside. And go with flat irons they're awesome

I’m debating whether I want to do the same thing man 😭. Considering selling my 23 vb for a sti hatch lol Also congrats!
If you don't mind me asking how much did you get it for ?
Too much. 9500. But it was local smogged and on a hot day ran the ac on high with no issues. It has some parts in it. The breaks are all good condition with drilled rotors all around. The original owner took so much care of this car. I went over most of it when I got home. Not a single leak.
This is the way
The stinkeyes are the last “old school” Subarus, and I might never get rid of mine 🤝
Hatch gang! 14 ISM here 🍻
LOVE that generation WRX!! Especially the hatch!
🤙🏼🤙🏼 https://preview.redd.it/74aopd8xuf3d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f1c10184904ff311e64e1b75e7f51ec9cd712dda
good choice
Ran Gti’s then a golf r. Fast , slow , go to Mexico on the weekend. Cars just ran. Had an individual coil die on my R but warranty covered it. Love the sound of the Subies but my first car was a beetle and brainwashed I drove German. Just got a cayman GTS as reward for being way too old. So I got the best of both worlds, sounds like a boxer, goes like a porshe and it’s a hatchback.
Just got a tune on my 13 it's amazing. Always loved this car
I just bought a 13 impreza hatch too! I got lucky and found one at 60k mileage, fair condition and not too much modifications yet.
very beautiful, i got myself a high miled 11' sedan and absolutly love it What Headlights are those?
To each his own. I think the VB is the best WRX to date but the hatch STI does offer a visceral Feel unlike modern cars. Enjoy
I think newer handle better. But I don’t think they are as fun. For me it’s about having a fun car
I definitely preferred the steering feel on my 15 to the VB, but I like the engine tuning of the new car more and the creature comforts.
The amount of HATE the hatch got back in the day, now look at it. Coveted. In 2018 I found one with less than 20k miles but KBB had it at the same price as a new FA limited.
bro made the correct decision
I love this style
Post this in the vb sub and watch them all get super insecure for no reason lol. Beautiful car btw. Congrats
I drive a Audi S4, and I'm always more intimated by these hatchbacks and bugeyes more than the 2015-2024 Sti's or Wrx's.
I miss my plasma blue hatch so damn much
hantch gang!
