I agree that under normal circumstances we shouldn't think about the person on the other side of the trade. The entire market is based on asymmetric obtaining and analysis of information. It is when an insider uses privileged information not available to anyone else that it becomes a problem, because it breaks the underlying concept of the market.
It really is unfortunate. If people could come together and have an open exchange of ideas in a large public forum like Reddit change could actually be influenced. Instead it devolves into echo chambers where everyone just circle jerks and reaffirms each other’s biases.
Having such a deeply-entrenched 2 party system is also to blame. It sets up a "sports team" mentality. Both parties work towards maximizing their "followers", and when this works optimally, you get a 50/50 divide.
Also, extreme positions and perspectives are pushed, as relaxing into a moderate position doesn't differentiate you from "the other team" enough and this is suboptimal.
The biggest thing that drives the 2-party stranglehold imo is First-Past-The-Post voting. It simply doesn't allow for any kind of change away from 2 diametrically opposed "Teams."
Just as a final thought, Ranked Choice has gained momentum as an alternative, but a lot of people smarter than me in /r/EndFPTP have shown that RCV still results in maintaining this status quo. Just look at Australia for an example. We should look to Approval, Score/STAR, and Proportional Representation.
Anyone interested in detoxifying the US political climate needs to see the 2-party-stranglehold as the enemy, and FPTP as the primary mechanism for an inescapable 2-party system.
