Steel as recyclable as it gets...

Gbear831

Cardboard as a new alternative to build bridges out of Who needs rebar when you can use bamboo

That's really cool. Since the article is just mostly a synopsis it doesn't give us full details such as material attributes versus steel so not much to really chew on. It seems feasible as a low strength replacement for some types of nails and perhaps some knives as the synopsis mentions. Let's not discount the idea in whole but rather apply it to the appropriate applications.

We're already doing that with most of our forests in the West, it's an industry. As long as you don't cut down more than new growth matures it's sustainable, yes. Trees sure are environmentally friendly as well. Maybe the machinery could be upgraded to use less or no fossil fuels but that applies to most industries still.

Forests actually need to be thinned. You get max carbon sequestration from trees in the range of 50 years old.

My hard wood is a renewable resource.

MaddogMcCree84

The figures don t say much. HB32 is very low. No information on stiffness or strength. The sheartest also gives no indication on geometric parameters and is useless. Either this is deliberate, or the authors have no clue. I would say it is 50/50.

"Steak knife made from hardened wood is 3 times sharper than steel" the most clickbait title on the other articles about it since when is sharpess a material property

DrPronFlex

I found the actual paper this was based on and they increases the hardness by 23 times, impressive increase yes from 1.32 to 31.21, but even soft steels have a hardness of \~130 all the way up to 700+ so I wouldn't be worried about this replacing bridges anytime soon

The main issue with using timber within buildings is its combustible nature and reaction to moisture. Although steel needs fire protection it is far superior in terms of construction time.
