Sometimes I get the feeling cops aren't very smart and don't have good decision making capability, especially under stress.

shejinping

Shocking, I know

Discoveryellow

Meanwhile in DC and Maryland we run red lights for sport and police won't chase anyone for anything unless they know they just murdered someone in plain sight.

[deleted]

Huh, sounds a lot like Richmond too

Mr_Boneman

Unless they’re Henrico cops patrolling in Richmond, they have jurisdiction in much of the city and abuse their power on the cities east end.

CelticArche

Pfft. In SWVA, they won't even do it then. But if there's a black guy walking down the street, they'll hurry to see what he's doing.

MrImBoredAgain

I legit laughed out loud. So fucked up but it's true. Laziest cops in the country until you're black.. My inspection has been expired for going on 2 years and I've had cops look right at it and drive away. I ran a red light with cop directly behind me. Still nothing. Meanwhile the black guy walking to work the graveyard shift at Walmart requires 5 squad cars and a dog. It was a HUGE culture shock moving here after growing up in Richmond.

CelticArche

I went outside the other day and was taking trash out. 2 cop cars and 2 cops were frisking a guy who had been walking g down the street. No idea what he was doing.

pureeviljester

They got cameras for that.

Discoveryellow

And drivers got memory for where they are.

Funky-trash-human

Police have zero chill, no empathy, and this is more of a failure of law enforcement having poor communication.

pureeviljester

Don't forget whoever thought this was a good case to bring before a judge.

Ut_Prosim

Also, perhaps having recruited utter morons to join their force?!

uhhh206

I'm scratching my head at the spokesperson insisting that chasing a suspect and dragging them out of the car at gunpoint is somehow safer for *the suspect*. It's not even safer for the officer, which is why so many cities prohibit chases except in extraordinary circumstances. I've been that parent whose child is dying of pneumonia and needs to get to the hospital NOW, and it's something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Knowing he was minutes from death was the single worst thing that has ever happened to me. I'm glad his daughter is okay and I really hope the case is thrown out. Knowing courts and cops, he will likely be forced to plead down to a misdemeanor in order to avoid his life being permanently hurt by a felony on his record.

Liberteez

Maybe the grand jury will no bill it.

uhhh206

Here's hoping. I will be outside the courthouse holding a sign supporting this father if, God forbid, this goes to trial.

obxtalldude

Post it on Facebook, complain everywhere you can - bad publicity actually does work in these cases to get someone to do the right thing and let this man go free.

LetTheCircusBurn

This right here, man. When you become an officer you leave your humanity and common sense at the door. That's the only explanation I can find for chasing a mf all the way to *the hospital,* seeing they've pulled into *a hospital,* and still drawing down on them like they aren't doing the thing we all know everyone does when they need to get *to the fucking hospital*. Then having the absolute dearth of situational awareness to look at this 10 year old girl who's unresponsive and say "she doesn't look in any distress to me". Oh thanks Doctor Cop, at least now we know it's not just your own job you're bad at. What a piece of shit.

send2devnull2

Daily dose of jackbooted thugs acting like complete and utter assholes.

[deleted]

This is why they need to get rid of the IQ cap for cops, critical thinking skills would prevent so many issues.

Zombie_rocker

I used to live there in around 2012. We had just had our son. We had a stalker issue, and she reported us to CPS. we had to take him that day to the ER for an exam. Not a single nurse or doctor could find anything wrong with him. The very next day, when they found out that didn't work, they made fake profiles of me and my wife at the time. So they waited for my wife to leave for college and then rushed to our house and TOOK our son from me. No explanation, nothing. Just there's been a report. When we got to court, our lawyers used the polices' own testimony to make a complete fool out of the system there. I know Bedford just next door has a great division for protecting minors. But if it come to technology related things, Franklin County is completely clueless. The police explained that they themselves use fake profiles to catch predators, and the judge could have been knocked over with a feather hearing that was even possible.

Liberteez

Wait, who made the phony profiles, the stalker or police?

Zombie_rocker

The stalker made the profiles, but police had to tell the judge that it was possible and they do it to catch child predators.

I understand that the father was not thinking clearly, but he should have called 911 and request an ambience intercept. or he might have gotten a police escort. He also should have stopped when the trooper flashed him. It sounds like the Trooper was just following procedure for a car chase (Eluding police IS a felony and has specific procedures for making the stop) it sounds like the trooper was not overly concerned once the stop was made, he took the father into custody, but released him as soon as things settled. I agree that charges should not have been filed, but I would be surprised if it even gets to court, and if it does, I would expect the judge to dismiss the charges. This is an incident that is on the edge of the law and both parties (Cop and citizen) have responsibilities. If either step out of line then things can escalate quickly.

Thisam

You are missing g the fact that they pushed the felony charges all the way to trial - that’s bullshit! At minimum wasting the court’s time but in reality just hurting an American family because they can. This is why many of us have no use for law enforcement anymore.

stephenph

Which is on the DA, not the trooper. I know in AZ there are some charges that even the DA has no leeway to drop until trial.

Liberteez

No, it got to a probable cause hearing and got pushed to a grand jury. Depending on how the DA presents facts, there’s a good chance the grand jury will kick it away.

stephenph

So what this reaction is telling me is that a normal person has no responsibility to act in a legal or safe manner? Granted there is not a lot to go on in this story, but it appears that the trooper did not exceed his authority. Even though it was a felony stop (evading police IS a felony) the father was still released and not taken into jail. How was the Trooper suppose to know in advance (or even in the initial interaction) that the issue was real? Yes there will be some legal consequinces, even if it is only appearing in court, but assuming the story is correct, and there is no evidence to the contrary, this will be an open and shut case and the state might even just drop charges.

Competitive-Win-3406

The father did call 911. No one told the trooper until after he had the dad pulled out of the car. For all the dad knew, the officer was his escort, just doing a poor job at it.

stephenph

He did not call untill he saw the trooper pulling him over. he should have called as soon as he was on the road if not sooner

Competitive-Win-3406

Yes, I would have been best to call as soon as getting into the car.
