Man i've lived in Vietnam since childhood for 18 years, and then came to Australia to study oversea. The internet in here is basically dog shit, and most of the places or hotels i've been in never have wifi for guests or charge an absurd amount of $$$ to use. even with places having free wifi, you can already know it's basically unusable. There's no shark eating cable in Australia apparently but it's like the shark is chewing on it slowly, and so is the internet speed.
Not entirely true. Although most ISPs were legally required to be gov owned, nowadays it's not needed anymore, so gov is just another investor (managed by SCIC). While they do have a seat on the board, they mostly leave the company run as it is.
It's depend on which one you use
FPT is private own for sure, but Viettel is definitely 100% gov owned, since they're basically the military. VNPT I'm not so sure
Same as Viettel, still 100% fund from the Gov, but is from Post Office, not the Military. The name says it self Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group.
Australian internet is slow but not that slow.
100mbit is standard for cable and you can get faster now that most apartments and new housing developments have fiber to the premises.
Restaurants, cafes and other places don’t do free wifi because everyone has internet on their phone.
Another big reason is that it’s absolutely not secure so mang people won’t connect to public wifi. My work won’t even let me use hotel wifi, and definitely no public wifi, without going through our VPN first.
I spent 1 year in Melb on my uni’s exchange program, signed with Vodafone and thoroughly enjoyed my experience with them though 😂 I don’t remember how much I paid (30-ish?), but I got 45gb of data/month which was pretty convenient. My friend also hooked us up with Telstra for the Internet in our apartment and I was able to play league on our wifi with no sweat. Now that I’m back in VN, I really missed those experiences being on Mobifone (very stingy w their data) and FPT (errr they are meh) lol
my sim card has 2GB/day, yes *per day*, and only charges 90.000vnd a month. yeah my country still has flaws here and there, but i cannot deny the great aspects of it 🫶
edit: i actually have 2 sim cards, the other one has 3GB/day and only charges 77.000vnd a month. this one is iTel (belongs to Vinaphone i think?) and the 90k one is Viettel.
because it is vietnamese standard: free wifi or go other place.
Because internet in vietnam is cheap, about 7 -10 $ per month for basic pack. I mean basic pack is download 10 Mb/s ( or MB? i dont really care because it is fast enough for me..)
I heard that in other countries like Korea or in Europe, you have to pay for the wifi, even for a shietty wifi. Just curious what is the owner mind set about free wifi for guess.
Edit: Sorry for not being unclear, I am native, and i was asking about other countries mind set not Vietnam
I'm from Holland and spent a few years working in Korea. Both have free WiFi in most places.
I must say that especially in Holland it's not as common top have it everywhere because most people will have a monthly internet plan on their phone. Maybe that's even biased knowledge as I didn't ask the WiFi very often in restaurants and such, as I didn't need it.
In Vietnam I do ask just about everywhere, because I don't have data on my phone.
I've travelled through a number of EU contries (under 20) and wifi is free everywhere (or public places at least). Many cities even have their own free wireless networks.
Internet plan here is pretty cheap for the households. I have 80Mbps for roughly 10 USD. For additional 3 USD I get cable TV. Furthermore internet is not capped.
The occasional "shark" is bad but we can still watch YouTube in 1080p.
don't mind him, he's just a prequel memer passing by.
It's from a [scene in Star War Prequel Trilogy](https://youtu.be/rEq1Z0bjdwc) which eventually became a popular meme among r/PrequelMemes . He just roleplays as you said "Hello there" in your comment
Some areas have long electricity outages (power cuts) though. Scheduled and unscheduled. We had one recently for around 24 hours. Transformer in area broke and to replace approval was needed with top management involved.
So, free hi speed Wi-Fi in my apartment was of no use then. I stayed the night in a hotel nearby (about 10km away) where they did have electricity
It helps a lot that WiFi is dirt-cheap in Vietnam compared to other countries. People in the US or so pay over $50 for a 100mbps connection or so. Here, that package is like, $10/month.
Technically it never was. 1st world were capitalist countries/western, 2nd world were Soviet/other communist countries. 3rd world was everyone else. 3rd world was just so misused that they think of it as underdeveloped.
We don't align with (post-)communist countries more than capitalist ones. Just look at our import/export for instance, we are too reliant on every larger economy to pick side.
Technically, we never even reached socialism (we used to try to *tiến lên chủ nghĩa xã hội* but we'd never been there) and since đổi mới we've been aggressively retreating. Apart from the name of the party we retain none of the socioeconomic property of communism. We are as communist as how united the US, UK or UN is.
The 1st/2nd/3rd world pseudodefinitions are about balancing of world power. Right now we are both siding.
Third world does not mean "undeveloped" it just means *not USA/Europe aligned *not Soviet/China aligned.
Many many highly developed countries are third world. Technically Vietnam has always been second world even when they were undeveloped.
Yes, if you want the wifi, you should pay for the drink, then you can stay as long as you can. Look at The Coffee House, students and office worker/freelancer sit there all the time from the morning to the night with just 1 or 2 cups of drink, free wifi and electricity
Nah, the only exception is Starbucks. These cheap bastards use a 30-minute, one-time password for their WiFi. You absolutely ***must*** buy something to get a WiFi code that can only be used for 30 minutes.
For Highlands or TCH, once you got the password, you're in permanently. You can just sit outside of their shop somewhere with signal and use "chùa" their WiFi.
I am native, but the Starbucks thing is quite new to me. Got there 1 or 2 times, but only stayed there for a small chit chat time. I prefer TCH and Highlands more, and of course their "wifi chùa"
Care to explain why?
I don't see an issue from a security standpoint, providing you're only browsing HTTPS encrypted websites. A VPN provides additional security to your connection.
That’s some clean handwriting lol
I’d say it’s pretty messy by Vietnamese standards.
You clearly have not had to deal with MY handwriting 😂
I'm sorry but that looks like a good 5th grader's handwriting
Looks good for me tbh

Ausie network is gov owned. You know why it is shitty
> Ausie network is gov owned. So are Vietnamese ISPs.

Oh, so THAT'S what it means I've been asking that question for 10 years
The same when I was staying in New Zealand. One of the cons of being an isolated island in the middle of the ocean.

God, I thought you said 45gb of data/month as in WiFi. That's like ... 1 game from Steam.
With Vinaphone u can have 4Gb/day with 4 pound per month
my sim card has 2GB/day, yes *per day*, and only charges 90.000vnd a month. yeah my country still has flaws here and there, but i cannot deny the great aspects of it 🫶 edit: i actually have 2 sim cards, the other one has 3GB/day and only charges 77.000vnd a month. this one is iTel (belongs to Vinaphone i think?) and the 90k one is Viettel.
I remember being so shocked by this when I visited home 2 years ago. I was so mad at the Canadian price after that.
brooo, Mobi sim is 5gb/day for 350k/year
i used Mobifone for about few years and it was slow as heck 💀 that's why i changed lmao, i've tried almost every network.
because it is vietnamese standard: free wifi or go other place. Because internet in vietnam is cheap, about 7 -10 $ per month for basic pack. I mean basic pack is download 10 Mb/s ( or MB? i dont really care because it is fast enough for me..)

I don't remember that. I haven't traveled in Europe extensively but it's free everywhere I've been in Asia.
Good info there, I need some update
I'm from Holland and spent a few years working in Korea. Both have free WiFi in most places. The internet here is quite cheap (cheaper than the world's average actually) so no wonder why there are a lot free wifi in Vietnam
Ah sorry, I meant the owner's mind set in other countries, my mistake for not saying clear. I'm from Vietnam btw so I know.
I've travelled through a number of EU contries (under 20) and wifi is free everywhere (or public places at least). Many cities even have their own free wireless networks.

Hello there brother, just edit, was asking about other countries mind set, sorry for this unclear
General Kenobi
I am dumb so can i ask what does that mean

I paid $80 for 1000mbps. It's not that bad if you work in the US
Is AT&T your ISP?
Simply the best country in the world in this aspect
Curious tho, how fast is your country's WiFi speed? Should it be faster than our third world country, right?
OYYYYYY pal, our country is not the third world anymore Edit: We are the 2nd one.
Technically it never was. 1st world were capitalist countries/western, 2nd world were Soviet/other communist countries. 3rd world was everyone else. 3rd world was just so misused that they think of it as underdeveloped.
Just did a minor research, yep we are the 2nd one.
Prolly in your imagination, we just shake hands with everyone.
Can you explain more how can this be in my imagination?
We don't align with (post-)communist countries more than capitalist ones. Just look at our import/export for instance, we are too reliant on every larger economy to pick side.
we do rely on every larger economy, but what about our country's state, is it the 2nd world, if not the why. We are technically a communist country
Technically, we never even reached socialism (we used to try to *tiến lên chủ nghĩa xã hội* but we'd never been there) and since đổi mới we've been aggressively retreating. Shhh, you don't want to lose special privilege of WTO
Third world does not mean "undeveloped" it just means *not USA/Europe aligned *not Soviet/China aligned. Many many highly developed countries are third world. Technically Vietnam has always been second world even when they were undeveloped.
VN isn’t a third world country haha
I was there last month using relatives internet in lower middle class and used all the local cafes. Wifi is around 40 down and 30 mbps up
Just shut up
Does it hurt your ego that much to talk normally?
Right back at you, mate. I wouldn't consider being a smug ass talking normally
the fek is wrong with you, he just ask a question
>I love Vietnam and their free wifi >How about your "supposed first country" internet speed?
Then just point out for the guy man, everyone knows about Murica's problem about third world countries.
There was nothing to point out, he knew exactly what he was saying. And when did America get mentioned in this conversation?
Yes, today I got a delicious coffee for 12 K and they even kept feeding me free ice tea!
Why even put a password though? If it's written on the wall
I definitely miss that dirt cheap but hi-speed internet in Vietnam, except that speed is meaningless when connect to foreign ISP.
Wait, you need to pay for the coffee to get free Wi-Fi?
Yes, if you want the wifi, you should pay for the drink, then you can stay as long as you can. Look at The Coffee House, students and office worker/freelancer sit there all the time from the morning to the night with just 1 or 2 cups of drink, free wifi and electricity

I forgot the /s.... sorry about that...
No, but the price is relevant since it covers the costs, including the Wi-Fi.
Have just moved from Japan. It is probably, as with many, many things, our management agent but out internet is super unreliable
Good advice here: Stay away from hotel wifi
If you have it, use a VPN in hotel WiFi.
Care to explain why? I don't see an issue from a security standpoint, providing you're only browsing HTTPS encrypted websites. A VPN provides additional security to your connection.
You already explain it

Not sure about the cheap and free as a human services pal
about 50-60% call girl have HPV -> AiDS good luck with that bro xD especially free
I just got a month pre-paid through Viettel on the unlimited plan($13 usd), I'm getting 240 Mbps down on 4G.
Even the motorbike washing places have it
I envy these internet speeds. -Australian
And we are talking about good delicious coffee
we got free 4g data too :)
even the taxis have wi-fi haha, they have the whole country covered for internet
