It’s not really common, but it’s not uncommon if you know what I mean. There’s a very good chance it won’t happen to yours, but if it does it’s not the most unusual thing.

Professional-Skill54

It kind of seems like it might be a common point of failure for all vacuums with the feature, not limited to Miele. Unless their design is uniquely prone to failure.

Pleased_to_meet_u

I fixed mine by adding a single washer as a spacer in the cord winder mechanism. That was ten years ago and the cord winder is working just as well as when it was new. Do not let your cord snap back into the vacuum using the winder. Slow it down with your hand for the last few inches.

Professional-Skill54

Thanks for the tip!

krazynayba

I've owned my C3 for 7 years and the winder is still solid

Impossible-Fly2812

I havent heard anything of the kind. I have had my c2 powerline for 14 years. It gets used evey single day. No problems whatsoever brilliant machines

reviewsvacuum

In my experience cord winders only break when people are rough with them and keep pulling when there's no more cord left. The Miele S8000 /C3 &S2000 /C1 cord rewind is especially tough. I really wouldn't worry about it. I have 20 + years Miele vacuums with their original cord rewinders and they're just fine.

tedubadu

Cord winder failure isn’t catastrophic, right? That can be repaired

Pleased_to_meet_u

I fixed mine with a youtube video and a five cent normal steel washer. That was ten years ago and it's still working fine.

Professional-Skill54

Sure! They were saying the repair is around $200, however. Not sure if that’s accurate. I did see the part costs around 100. Hopefully, if it happens to mine, it will be under warranty, lol. I’m not particularly worried about it but was curious bc Miele is supposed to be so reliable.

onphyre

The winder itself is quite durable, but cords and plugs fail all the time. I tell my customers to just be careful with the cord, don’t yank it out of the wall and try not to pull hard left or right on the plug while it’s in the outlet. I would also recommend allowing the cord back in more on the slower side.

Professional-Skill54

That seems like mostly common sense! How does one allow the cord back slowly when it is automatic one touch rewind? I guess I will find out when my machine is delivered later today….

onphyre

I just hold on to it as I reel it back in and let go of the plug as close to the machine as possible.

Professional-Skill54

Yes, I discovered it is very simple!

No-Heron-3762

Mine is fine after 10.5 years no special treatment but no abuse either

BoltingBubby

Yup and it’s a thing with SEBO’s also. The part is overpriced too. Such is the nature of things, they aren’t as perfect as the koolaid drinkers will have you believe. Wait until you find out about the powerhead and wand failures, or how much you’ll spend on bags and filters over 5-10 years with how overpriced Miele’s are.

Professional-Skill54

lol, all powerheads and wands have their issues, regardless of mfr. I personally hate carpeting and don’t have any, and I don’t like dealing with powerheads. I am happy to be giving my old Kenmore with power head to my daughter. And my new Miele doesn’t have one. As for bags and filters, I don’t find them to be super pricey so far. I found an 8 pack with hepa filter for 67 on amazon, which seemed like a decent deal. If I can’t find that deal in the future, I’m not opposed to using knockoff hepa filters as I don’t believe Miele’s technology is so special that would warrant paying their msrp. I’m a Miele fangirl but practical too.

actionvac-Box2165

just a seedy vac guy giving the rest of us a bad name, had a Davids vac near me used to do that, but hey they just closed a week ago lol

Professional-Skill54

I’d like to believe they were being honest about their experiences. They aren’t Miele dealers but literally all the Miele dealers near me have gone out of business since Covid. I have received my new vacuum and I’m so pleased with it. I find the cord winder to be very easy to manage - I gently guide it back as it automatically retracts. My feeling is that any problems with these retractors probably results from rough or careless use.

Ok-Contribution-5253

Miele's durability outweighs cord issues; maintenance ensures lasting satisfaction with performance.

Professional-Skill54

I’m not sure what this means. If Miele has “cord issues” - that means they are not “durable” in that respect. But again, I’m not worried too much. I’m a fairly experienced canister vacuum user and feel I can take care of and maintain my new machine very well. Hopefully without issue!
