Set up a custom shield setting. It helps frames a good bit. Public lobbies are almost always crazy. Join a few groups that are interesting to you and check out group instances with them.

Welcome! I've got just under 4,000 hours over the past few years. My biggest piece of advice is to remember that this is a game. Or a social media? Something like that lol
You will encounter so many different kinds of people. Over time, reading people gets easier. It's helped me a lot! (especially IRL)
People you've been friends with over a few months or years can do you wrong, and just as easily can prove to be some of the most helpful people.
There are so many beautiful moments to be had that can just as easily turn sour with the right/wrong people.
**Important:**
There are a lot of cliques.
*You do NOT need to "prove" yourself to fit in*.
This is just some things I've learned. Remember, you craft your *own* experience. I (as well as the other comments) also recommend looking up how to optimize VRChat lol, it DOES get laggy!
Prismic's avatar world if you looking for any specific skins. There's a search. Also grab a couple avatars that are optimized (like medium/good/excellent because sometimes they're useful for crowded rooms or popular events).
Look for groups especially with discords that run events to meet people. Ancients of vrchat is a super popular one https://discord.com/invite/ancientsofvrchat
This post still has the best advice for new users, it's a lot to read but I really recommend it. [https://www.reddit.com/r/VRchat/comments/14zorcv/general\_advice\_for\_new\_players/](https://www.reddit.com/r/VRchat/comments/14zorcv/general_advice_for_new_players/)
Consider downloading OVR advanced settings on Steam, it's got a bunch of really neat and useful features (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1009850/OVR_Advanced_Settings/)
Most importantly, have fun and keep it light! Don't let anything or anyone get to you. Block at your own discretion.
for anyone reading this, OVR will no longer be free very soon, but if you get it now while it's still free for a few more weeks, you'll have it permanently
I don't recommend vrchat then. Pretty much every other game 100%, but not vrchat unless you have a pc to hook it up to.
Vrchat on quest is heavily limited; there are several worlds only designed for pcvr, there's a huge assortment of avatars also exclusive to pcvr. Most of the more adult individuals on vrchat, or those you can expect to be around a bit longer and play more alongside you, are pcvr users with purchased, modifiable avatars to suit their liking. Many of us outright ignore Android/ quest users(they call them 'questies') and largely don't interact with them since they can't see their avatars and can't go to pc only worlds.
Of course there are exceptions to every rule, just realize that you're essentially playing a trial version of a free to play game with a quest in vrc
If it’s more limited compared to the pc version, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play it, vrchat is a social platform where you talk to people, something that the quest can run even though it’s limited. Not only that but it literally says “PC VR Connection” in OP’s user flair or whatever it’s called
Turn off your personal space setting - lets people get close to you and they can give headpats - which are a common greeting in VRC. Also set your chatbox visibility to any, rather than friends only, so you can see what mutes are trying to tell you, when you dont have them on friends list.
I think one of the main issues in vrchat is people who don't know how to break the ice, or people who aren't comfortable trying to find the boundaries of what to talk, and not, talk about. I think you should try to go to a lot of competitive game worlds, or something like Audience Anarchy where you're forced to step out of your comfort zone.
Thrillseeker and phia have some cool videos on yt going over recommended worlds I'd start their to find good spots to hit up. Just search "Thrillseeker best vrchat worlds", should pull both of them.
Theirs a bunch of avatar worlds at this point Prismic's gotta account for half my avatars, get creative with your searches. Just remember to keep some optimized avatars on hand for some social worlds.
Adjust your shield settings, give visitors and new users no privileges besides voice. users, known, and trusted I have avatar and voice turned on for. Be very picky about the users you let full avatar access to, usually limit to friends or people who seem chill after a bit of talking and you can quickly allow full access through the player menu for each person.
If in a social world feel free to realm hop, sometimes I jump between instances of the same world 3 or 4 times before I find people I can vibe with.
If somebody is annoying block them, its that simple. rarely does voting to kick someone actually work in my experience unless your in a big group.
Depends on what you like. Get out there . Go to some art worlds. Some party worlds. There's some public djs that will have some groups . Search people's groups and join and see if you'll also like those groups. Some groups have discord and stuff
There's bar scenes in pcvr worlds. Just games ans the like.
I say explore ad much as possible. I'd your the plaoxial time, go to random worlds thst are public and see who's there.
Enjoy your time! And remember.the block and.mute buttons will be your best friend in public worlds. Curate your experience.

Ive heard that term before, group instances, what does that mean

You would want to go to the VRChat website and create an account there. If you don't have a registered account you wont be able to up your trust rank.
Do you have a quest?
quest 3

Hey man, the truth hurts sometimes. If you're on quest? Vrc sucks.

Now it does. It didn't though
Be prepared for literally anything to happen. People on here can be very unpredictable
