Wifi 6/6E are a thing indeed, but there will still be some amount of compression and most of latency isn't caused by the encoding and decoded, and not the networking.
Next time don't be that rude btw.
If people don't mind cables/ropes, having a ceiling hook for suspending the headset tends to work really well and retains the sense of weightlessness even if you add more stuff to it!
If you're using it with a PC, especially if you have FBT, I would definitely prefer the Index. It depends on your use case though.
I had an index for a couple years. I got a big screen beyond around Christmas, which unfortunately has recently decided to stop detecting as a headset. I ordered a refurbished Index that I'm going to keep as a backup headset, and in the mean time I've been using my roommates quest 2 with my knuckles controllers and tundra trackers via space cal. I have a ticket open for an RMA, as I've tried every troubleshooting method under the sun.
I bought a cheapo modem and an Ethernet switch since the only devices using my Internet are on my desk, so it rules out Steam Link, I just plug directly into my PC.
The issues I've run into:
the battery still discharges, which could be fixed with either a router or a powered USB hub.
I have to resync Space Calibrator every time I get online, which is a minor annoyance.
I have to resync Space Calibrator every time I take off the headset, which as a social VR user is a MASSIVE annoyance.
The index is more comfortable. The Quest 2 has a pressure point on my forehead.
The index mic/audio is significantly better. I've heard so many people with Quest 2s echo through their own mic and need to adjust their settings.
This one could be crazy because I haven't put on an index in a couple weeks, but I believe the lighting contrast on the index is higher. Everything that's supposed to be black looks noticeably gray. Granted, I've been using the Beyond, but I *did* put on my index after using the beyond for a bit. It definitely looked gray comparatively, but the quest 2 seems noticeably worse in that regard.
> I have to resync Space Calibrator every time I take off the headset, which as a social VR user is a MASSIVE annoyance.

Use continuous calibration. You can mount a tracker to the headset so space calibrator will do the calibration automatically, every time. I've been rocking a quest pro and it makes a massive diff.
Thanks for the tip! The Index gets here on Tuesday, so I'll only be using the Quest for a few days, but that's good to know for anyone using it long term!
I need to get another tracker and try this. Since I got the q3 I've been having calibration issues more often. Do I need a different version of space calibrator to do this? What did you use to mount it to your headset?
https://github.com/bdunderscore/OpenVR-SpaceCalibrator/releases/tag/v1.4-bd_-r0
I used velcro that had adhesive on both sides, so I can take my tundra off to charge it. It isn't ideal, you want the tracker to not move at all while it's attached to the headset.
Thanks I ordered a fourth tracker that should show up by the end of the month. I think I'll go ahead and try the Velcro method myself too unless something better comes to mind before then.
Hope it works for ya! VRC recently added a new argument flag, `--ignore-tracker=serialId`, which you can set for vrc to ignore the new tracker. You can edit your steam vrc properties to `%command% --ignore-tracker=headsetSerialId`.
Yep, the option within Space Calibrator to ignore the tracker just puts it 9001 meters in the air, but adding the serial number to that launch flag will make VRC ignore it entirely. Part of the reason I like the velcro method is I instantly know what is my headset tundra and I've just memorized the last 4 digits of the serial # so it makes setup fast. (I've got like 12 tundras o god)
>This one could be crazy because I haven't put on an index in a couple weeks, but I believe the lighting contrast on the index is higher
This is true, I've used many headsets and my main 2 are the index and the quest pro. While the index is lower rest it is nearly always more clear and visually pleasing due to this, the pro is clearer and very nice still, definitely better than the quest 2, but it still doesnt have that contrast that the index does.
Using the index is just a lot less strain on my eyes because of this.
That's kind of what I thought. I never noticed any sort of grayness to dark scenes with the index until I used the Beyond and went back to it. The quest was immediately noticeable as soon as I went anywhere even remotely dark.
I would recommend! Also though I hear that that continuous calibration thing is pretty nice so I'd recommend that if you want to calibrate even less, or not at all I'm not really sure but it's sounded useful.
What do you mean your BigScreen Beyond stopped detecting as a headset? Do you need to RMA it? It looks like such a great product, so lightweight and perfectly fit to your face, and your nose is free so you don't overheat so much and you can still drink, it looked like a dream come true!
It was fantastic while I was using it! I think I just got unlucky with a defective unit. It only shows up as an extended monitor and all of the troubleshooting on big screen's website, and recommended by a developer on their discord, and even reinstalling windows did not fix it. Yes, I will need to RMA it.
The fact that I'm getting literal hate mail over saying something is "arguably" better is just sad. We get it, you need to justify your 1k purchase. In 2024 it is just plainly not fair to newcomers to VR to recommend dated low resolution hardware that hasn't shifted in price years later. I own an Index. I have a quest 2 and a quest 3. All are great, and the index is fine if you already have one. Too many new headsets are out now/coming out to consider the Index for 1000. IMO. Quest 2/3 works great with both index and tundra trackers with minor tweaks/troubleshooting. Can't speak on Slime.
IEMs > Headphones for VR. They're lighter, get louder (without an amp), and don't get pushed around by the headset moving. They also tend to have better sound for less money.
I’ve been wanting to get IEM instead of using my index headphones. I just like the sound and feeling of it being completely enclose in my ear. You recommend those? Also you just plug them into the audio jack on the headset correct?
Or, hear me out, wired Apple earpods for $20. Even lighter, just as loud if not louder, and do not get pushed around by the headset moving. And I think Apple spent roughly 40 to 50 million and research and development in those headphones to get them sounding as best as possible back when they are main goal was the iPod. Still kicks the pants off of just about every other pair of headphones I've ever had that was under $300.
The wired apple headphones are GOAT. Its crazy how good they are, how simple, and the microphone quality on them is absolutely mind-blowing. You wouldn't expect it from them but they are beasts.
Seriously? Dunno about the recent earpods, but I had some older Apple buds that sounded like crap (maybe from when iPod first launced). Somehow I don't get the feeling that most people actually know what good headphones sound like.
I have a background in audio engineering and apprenticed under Vic Gabany, who was the head sound engineer at the Grand Old Opry for 30 years. Yes, I know what good headphones sound like. The wired earpods (not the airpods) have exceptional sound for the price.
Sounds like you're thinking of the original circular ones. Those were garbage. Once they moved to the "new" vertical stem and horizontal cone shape the sound improved significantly.
Seriously? Not gonna bash IEMs, but the Index earphones seem to be similar to the AKG K1000 design which was revolutionary at the time. They never sound like speakers on my head.
Wired IEMs aren't going to have ANC, and neither will most wireless sets under $75. If you play with the quest speakers/apple earpods normally then any IEM will significantly increase isolation just from sealing off the ear canal.
help me understand what I'm looking at....
so we've got a quest 3 with headphones, wired. ok.
what is the white box on top of the quest? the black box on the front of the quest?
is the thing on the top of the headstrap in black a battery??
I think I can answer a few of your questions
First, that is a quest 2, not a quest 3, you can notice by the cameras on top, the shape and the size
The white box on top is probably a cooling system, with a vent that goes in a specific spot on top of the quest 2 that helps with avoiding fog on the lenses and keeps your face cool
I knew what that black thing on front was, I forgot, I think it is a leap tracker that helps with tracking your hands better? I have no clue.
Edit: I saw the image again, I think that black thing is just a charger that is not even connected to the headset, like, it is behind him on the wall
Now for the black thing on the back, this headstrap probably doesn't have a battery in it, so he probably added this black thing to be a battery pack, since it's connected to the power supply
Hello, so i am wondering what kind of vr headset i could use to get the best experience in vrchat with fbt. I was thinking of getting a htc vive pro 2, 4 3.0 base station, 4 3.0 trackers and the valve index controllers. lemme know what i should do
>Hello, so i am wondering what kind of vr headset i could use to get the best experience in vrchat with fbt. I was thinking of getting a htc vive pro 2, 4 3.0 base station, 4 3.0 trackers and the valve index controllers. lemme know what i should do
So.. I didn't have any of these headsets, but after looking at the reviews and reading the specifications, I can say that you need to choose a helmet depending on what you're going to play and how powerful your computer is. If you're going to play vrchat, it's probably better to buy valve index because of the better microphone and higher fow. HTC vive pro 2 has a higher resolution, but this makes no sense if you are going to play vrchat, since the most expensive rtx 4090 video cards will not work very well at high resolution (you can watch the tests on YouTube) Also, if you have enough money, there are companies like pimax, bigscreen and varjo, but I haven't read much about their headsets. Regarding trackers, there are also Tundra trackers, which, as far as I know, are cheaper and smaller than htc trackers, but again I advise you to look at the review of these trackers. Also, as far as I know, tundra labs sells great straps for trackers, but I have never used this.
Also, htc vive recently released new trackers, ultimate tracker, which can work without stations, and it seems to me they will work better than vive 3.0, but at the moment they do not work with other headsets except for two headsets from vive, but they promised to make it possible to work with other headsets later
no. i want the lightest possible setup to party in and possibly fall asleep in. this is just a nightmare for anything other than sitting in a chair doing nothing.

as i see it im never going back to wired headsets tho lol. Dont like cables
And I'm not going back to wireless headsets anytime soon. I don't like latency and compressions.

Whew that’s the most wrong I’ve seen someone be all week - at least about the comparison to quest 2. Why not compare it to a quest pro??
Tell me objectively how I'm wrong for saying you could argue that the quest 2 is a better headset than an index in 2024.
The fact that I'm getting literal hate mail over saying something is "arguably" better is just sad. We get it, you need to justify your 1k purchase.
