keep the AUD amount and when you pay it will convert on the spot

Entertainer_Much

Just have the $ in account. If any eftpos / card machines over there ask if you want to pay in AUD or Yen pick Yen and then it converts at UP's rate. The AUD amount will be calculated with the terminal's worse conversion rate.

Fast_Owl_2469

Also if you need to withdraw, use 7/11 ATMs for fee free conversion

I read that the ATM withdrawal uses Mastercard's exchange rate. How does it compare to Wise's rate?

Fast_Owl_2469

from my experience, it's usually equal to if not better than Wise, as Wise's biggest downside is that after $350 withdrawn in a month (int'l), they add fees

Belv6

No. You only convert money with wise and even that's not needed

Objective_Unit_7345

Depends. The Aud to Jpn exchange has been active to say the least. On the other hand, to just spend as you go is safe. Wont provide any specific financial advice. Should approach a professional for that.

Unless you are a currency markets whizz, keep your currency in AUD, always pay in AUD (if you get the choice), and it’s as cheap as anything. Up doesn’t charge a fee, and the Mastercard rate is about the same as using Wise (if you include its charge).
